1. Why an MBA?? There are a number of reasons.

My engineering degree has helped me sharpen my logical thinking and problem solving skills. I do not have much of a clue about business and the kind of things Ill learn about in an MBA: finance, marketing, sales, operations, strategy all this will gear me up for the corporate world; give me a broader view of how business actually works. In addition, I will be able to develop business savvy and skills of analysis. It is something that Ive learnt during my discussions with my brother-in-law. He is an MBA, and the major advantage he says the MBA gave him was that it enabled him to look at the big picture. He learnt to think strategically- looking at a problem and its different dimensions and then thinking out a solution. Another major reason Im keen on an MBA is the change it would bring in me as a person. An MBA is quite stressful; there are hectic schedules, theres a huge workload! And if I get through all this, I will be ready for anything when I start working. I know a few people who are MBAs and I am certainly in awe of them, thats because of their confident manner, the ease with which they put forth their ideas. That is something that attracts me. Why an MBA?? 1. Value addition. Knowledge- mktg, finance, operations, man-mgmt. Skills- analysis, communication, confident manner. To obtain a broader view of all the business functions such as marketing, sales, operations and finance. 2. Develop Technical Expertise and Business Savvy Quickly Can you advance to a managerial position or launch your own business without the benefit of an MBA degree? Yes. There is much to be learned from on-the-job training, and employers certainly value work experience. But an MBA program will put you on the fast-track to career advancement by offering you the chance to develop a wide range of general business knowledge and a broad base of technical skill -- and in a relatively short period of time, as opposed to the years-long trial-and-error process that tends to characterize knowledge and skill gleaned from on-the-job learning. 3. Networking is another key benefit. Business school teaching styles encourage teamwork, and over the course of an MBA program, you'll develop important relationships that can serve you well throughout your business career. And no matter the school, you can often get plugged into a network of alumni working at a wide range of companies. This is useful for mentoring, job searches, and professional contacts. 4. Many IT professionals do not understand finance or have management skills. Yes it can be learned on the job, but an MBA greatly accelerates the process. 5. Change in outlook, change in personality, big-picture thinking 6. It will place me in a company willing to invest in me, groom me so that 10 yrs down the line I can make important decisions for them. 7. Looking at only the money factor would be a blinkered attitude I believe.

2. Why an MBA now? Why not take some work experience?

I acknowledge that there is much to be learned from on-the-job training, but an MBA will greatly accelerate the process of learning- in a relatively short period of time, it will help me develop a wide range of general business knowledge and technical skills. It will place me in a top company willing to invest in me, groom me so that a few years down the line I can make important decisions for them. I will start dealing with the business aspect directly, as opposed to the more technical role Id be assigned in my current job. 3. Why management? Management is a critical function for every organization. As a manger, Id have to make important decisions which would affect the course the company takes. I will have a say in matters. Id be in a position of great responsibility and I think Id love to take up the responsibility and the challenges that come with it. 4. What makes a good manager? Being happy with your actions, not compromising on integrity, and being able to bring out the best in yourself, or make yourself better than you were that is success. 6. A failure: I was a part of a 6-member team which constructed a wireless robot (car) to take part in F1 racing competition held at V.J.T.I.s annual technical festival. The initial work consisted of soldering the transmitter/receiver components onto the PCB after which we moved onto the mechanical part of the robot. This included design of the robot chassis, fitting of the motors and attaching wheels on the motor shaft. My job was to solder the components and then decide the length at which the slots for the motors had to be cut on the robot base. Since all robots had their transmitters and receivers in the same frequency range the motion of our robot got affected. Apart from that, the alignment of our wheels had been disturbed which caused one wheel to get stuck while the other three rotated. As a result, our robot did not qualify for the finals. Although we were disappointed, the experience of working together as a team helped us understand each other better. Although we were disappointed, the experience of working together as a team helped us understand each other better. This experience taught me the importance of planning for any work. Redoing the entire circuitry also brought out the importance of patience and perseverance.

I have not felt out of place when I am in lectures, when I was the treasurer, when learning German, took up badminton. Im persistent. If I do take up something, I make sure I dont give up midway. A case in point is the time I worked with my group for a microcontroller based project for the electronics workshop. As we were testing the circuit just before submitting it, we found that it wasnt working. We tried all kinds of things. Changed the power supply, removed the IC, put it back in. but nothing worked. We were getting tense as the submission time was nearingwe had to demonstrate a working circuit. But I did not panic. I stuck to the debugging. I found out that one of the pins was loose. I carefully put it firmly in the socket using a piece of wire. And it started working! Team-skills: Enthusia, Pratibimb and EESA. 9. Weaknesses: Im a bit clumsy. I tend to keep things lying around, But Im working on it. Now I keep things where I can find them. I have assigned drawers for different things. Another development area for me is the time when I switch off. I need my 7 hours of sleep. And it does get difficult to manage things when theres a big workload. But I have found that taking short naps is useful, say when Im traveling or during lunch-time. And now I cope much better. 10. Who is your idol? My father. Hes a quality control engineer. He retired 5 years back. Hes an idol to me because of his grit and never-say-die attitude. There was a time in the nineties when there was a strike in his company. He went 10 months without a salary. He had to pay off the

loan on our new house. But he braved the bad times without ever letting it hurt us. His focus was to get me and my sister educated. Even now that he has retired, he wouldnt sit back and relax. He handles the administration of a housing societyhe likes to keep himself occupied. And all this after he suffered a heart attack last year. He just keeps going! And he keeps me going too! 11. Tell me about yourself. I was born and brought up here in Mumbai. I am currently in the 4th year of my B.Tech electronics programme at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute. I have enjoyed my time here. The best thing about VJTI is that theres more to it than academics. I have had the chance to participate in numerous extracurricular activities. Pratibimb: While working as the treasurer of our cultural fest, I had to keep track of the sponsors checks.I was responsible for withdrawing money assigned for the festival and distributing it to the organizers. In this case, I had to meet deadlines, because work would stop if money was not available on time. For that, I had to get advance requisitions approved from faculty, explaining the requirements and then get submit them in the Accounts section. This process would usually take up 2 days. And I had to manage all this while still attending lectures. It so happened that once or twice, money was needed urgently, and we could not wait for long. Otherwise, the entire work would have to be stalled. Hence, I got a special letter from the Director of our college and got the money in a day. Enthusia: I was the department head for electronics in the sports festival. As department head, I was responsible for the performance of the entire electronics contingent. I had to call selections, pick teamsmake sure I was fair and then co-ordinate with the event heads and the GS.
