1. (a) Indicate the influence of operating temperature on rolling bearing materials

(b) A journal bearing with a diameter of 200 mm and length 150 mm carries a load
of 20 kN, when the journal speed is 150 rpm. The diametral clearance ratio
is 0.0015. If possible, the bearing is to operate at 35o C ambient temperature
without external cooling with a maximum oil temperature of 90o C. If external
cooling is required, it is to be as little as possible to minimize the required oil
flow rate and heat exchanger size.
i. Will the bearing operate without external cooling?
ii. If the bearing operates with external cooling, determine the operating oil
temperature.
iii. If the bearing operates with external cooling, determine the amount of oil
in kg/min required to carry away the excess heat generated over heat dis-
sipated, when the oil temperature rises from 85o C to 90o C, when passing
through the bearing.

2. (a) What is equivalent static load. [2]


(b) The radial reaction on a bearing is 9000 N. It also carries a thrust of 5000
N. The speed of the shaft is 1000 rpm. The outer ring stationary. Expected
average life of bearing is about 25,000 hours. The load on the bearing is
smooth, the service is 8 hours/day. Select, [14]
i. Suitable roller bearing
ii. What is the rated 90% life of selected bearing?
iii. Compute the probability of the selected bearing surviving 25,000 hours

3. Design a mild steel connecting rod with an I -section for a single cylinder spark
ignition engine from the following data: [16]
Diameter of the piston = 0.104m
Weight of the reciprocating parts =18.2 N
Length of the connecting rod from the center = 0.314m
Stroke length = 0.14 mt
Speed of the engine =1500 rpm
Maximum explosion pressure = 2.28 Mpa.
Assume that maximum thrust takes place at T.D. C during the explosion stroke.

4. What are the stresses to which an over hanging shaft is subjected to? How would
you proceed to design such a crank shaft. [16]

5. (a) What are the factors to be considered for design of springs subjects to fatigue
loading? [6]
(b) A helical torsion spring of mean diameter 60 mm is made of a round wire of 6
mm diameter. If a torque of 6 N-m is applied on the spring, find the bending
stress induced and the angular deflection of the spring in degrees. The spring
index is 10 and modulus of elasticity for the spring material is 200 kN/mm2 .
The number of effective turns may be taken as 5. [10]

6. (a) Design a cast iron pulley of 630mm diameter to transmit 10kW at a speed
of 500 r.p.m. The center plane of the pulley overhangs the nearer bearing by
300mm. The belt ends are parallel and horizontal and the belt tension ratio
is 2:1. [8]
(b) Design a belt pulley to transmit 10kW at 180 r.p.m. The velocity of the belt
is not to exceed 500 meter / minute and the maximum tension is not to exceed
15 N/mm width. The tension on the slack side is one half that on the tight
side. Calculate all the dimensions of the pulley. Sketch neatly the sectional
elevation and end view showing all leading dimensions. [8]

7. Design the full depth 20o teeth of a pair of cast iron spur gears to transmit inter-
mittently 7.5 kW at 625 rev/min of the pinion. The velocity ratio should be about
3.5. The pinion is to have not less than 22 teeth. Find the module, face width and
diameters of the gears. Strength alone considered. Check for dynamic load. [16]

8. (a) Discuss the important points to be taken into account while selecting a proper
material for various elements of machine tools. [6]
(b) Discuss the various types of power threads. Discuss their relative advantages
and disadvantages. [10]

1. (a) Specify the types of lubricant with examples.


(b) A 50 mm diameter journal bearing rotates at 1500 rpm. L/D=1, radial clear-
ance 0.05mm, minimum film thickness = 0.02 mm. Calculate the maximum
radial load that the journal bearing can carry and still operate under hydro-
dynamic condition. For this load calculate power load in friction and the oil
temperature assuming the Hg and Hd. Absolute viscosity = 20 × 10−3 PaS
(1 centipoise = 10−3 PaS). Specific gravity of oil 0.88, specific heat of oil 2.1
kJ/kg o C [4+12]

Design stress for the material used = 80N/sq.mm
Design bearing stress=10N/sq.mn
Design stress for bolts=35N/sq.mm
Design a suitable connecting rod and check for stresses due to inertia.

4. What are the stresses to which an over hanging shaft is subjected to? How would
you proceed to design such a crank shaft. [16]

5. (a) Discuss the phenomenon of surge in spring, and how do you eliminate surge
in spring? [8]
(b) With the aid of a diagram explain the modified soderberg line method for
various stresses in a spring. [8]

6. (a) Derive an expression for the length of open flat belt. [4]

(b) Design a cast iron pulley transmitting 20 kW at 300 r.p.m. The diameter of
pulley is 550 mm and has four straight arms of elliptical cross-section in which
the major axis is twice the minor axis. [12]

7. (a) Explain the methods of improving the wear strength of a gear drive. [2]
(b) A compressor running 300 rpm is driven by a 15kW, 1200 rpm motor through
a 20o full depth involute gears. The centre distance is 375 mm. Choosing
suitable materials for the pinion and the gear, design the drive. Assume
medium shock conditions. [14]

8. (a) Why are square threads preferable to V threads for power transmission? Ex-
plain. [4]
(b) The lead screw of a lathe has square threads of 24 mm outside diameter and
5 mm pitch. In order to drive the tool carriage, the screw exerts an axial
pressure of 2.5 kN. Find the efficiency of the screw and the power required to
drive the screw, if it is to rotate at 30 rpm. Neglect bearing friction. Assume
coefficient of friction of screw threads as 0.12. [12]

1. (a) What do you understand by boundary lubrication in journal bearings? [4]


(b) The following data refer to a journal bearing
Diameter of the journal = 100 mm
Length of the journal = 175 mm
Load = 28 kN
Speed = 250 rpm
C/D = 0.001
Determine the coefficient of friction and heat generated. [12]

2. (a) What is meant by square bearing? [2]


(b) Select a suitable spherical roller bearing from SKF series 222C to support a
radial load of 4 kN and an axial load of 2 kN. Minimum life required is 10,000
hours at 1000 rpm. For the selected bearing find. [14]
i. The expected life under the given loads
ii. The equivalent load that can be supported with a probability of survival
of 95% with 10,000 hours

5. (a) Classify various types of springs with sketches and give their applications. [8]
(b) A helical spring is made from a wire of 6 mm diameter and has outside diameter
of 75 mm. If the permissible shear stress is 350 Mpa and modulus of rigidity
84kN/mm2 , find the axial load which the spring can carry and the deflection
per active turn. [8]

6. An open belt connects two flat pulleys. The pulley diameters are 300 mm and 450
mm and the corresponding angles of lap are 160o and 210o . The smaller pulley
runs at 200 r.p.m. The coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25.
It is found that the belt is on the point of slipping when 3 kW is transmitted. To
increase the power transmitted two alternatives are suggested, namely [16]

(a) increasing the initial tension by 10%, and


(b) increasing the coefficient of friction by 10% by the application of a suitable
dressing to the belt. Which of these two methods would be more effective?
Find the percentage increase in power possible in each case and also design
the system.

7. It is desired to determine the proportions of a spur gear drive to transmit 8kW from
a shaft rotating at 1200rpm to a low speed shaft, with a reduction of 3:1. Assume
that the teeth are 20o full depth involute, with 24 teeth on pinion. The pinion is
to be of 40C8 Steel and gear of 30C8 steel. Assume that the starting torque is 130
percent of rated torque. [16]

8. (a) Enumerate the differences between differential screw, ball screw and compound
screw. [6]
(b) Explain step by step procedure to design a lathe machine bed. [10]

1. (a) Explain factors to be considered when selecting bearings?


(b) Design a full journal bearing for the following specifications.
Radial load =30 kN
Journal diameter = 120 mm
Speed of the journal = 500 rpm
Minimum oil film thickness = 0.025 mm [4+12]

2. (a) A roller bearing is selected to withstand a radial load of 40 kN and life of


1200 hrs at 600 rpm. What load rating would you look for in searching from
manufacturers catalogue if it specifies loud at speed 500 rpm and life 3000 hrs
[8]
(b) Select a suitable rolling bearing for a 55 mm diameter shaft. The bearing
should be capable of withstanding 3 kN radial and 1.5 kN axial load at 750
rpm. The bearing is to have a desired rated life of 2000 hrs at a reliability of
94% . There is a light shock load and inner ring rotates. [8]

3. (a) Why I-section is selected for high-speed I.C engines? [4]


(b) A double acting steam engine has the following specifications
Cylinder bore =500 mm
Piston stroke=750 mm
Maximum pressure on piston=175 N/sq.cm
Connecting rod length= 1400 mm
Select the suitable material and design the connecting rod. [12]

5. (a) Derive an expression for maximum shear stress induced in the helical spring
of circular wire. [6]
(b) Find the maximum shear stress induced in a helical spring of the following
specifications, if it has to absorb 1000 N-m of energy. Mean diameter of
spring is 100 mm; Diameter of steel wire, used for making the spring is 20
mm; Number of coils is 30; Modulus of rigidity of steel is 85 kN/mm2 . [10]

6. Design a flat belt drive to transmit 110kW at a belt speed of 25m / s between
two pulleys of diameters 250mm and 400mm having a pulley center distance of
1 metre. The allowable belt stress is 8.5 kg/m2 . Given that the coefficient of
friction between the belt and pulleys is 0.3, determine the minimum required belt

width. What would be the necessary installation force between the pulley bearings
and what will be the force between the pulley bearings when the full power is
transmitted? [16]

7. (a) State and explain the necessity of Barth’s equation in design of spur gear [4]
(b) Design a pair of 20o full depth spur gears to transmit 15kW at 1400 rpm
to another shaft rotating at 720 rpm. Design the gear drive and check for
dynamic load. [12]

8. A power elevating screw of 64 mm diameter has a single start square thread of 6


mm pitch and is engaged with a non-rotating bronze nut on which rests a load of
200 kN. The screw is supported by a thrust collar bearing. The pitch diameter of
the screw is 60 mm, the coefficient of static friction between the screw and the nut is
0.18 and the same value may be assumed between the collar and the bronze thrust
washer. Determine the length of nut, number of threads, and size of collar integral
with screw, diameter of bronze thrust washer and efficiency of screw. Assume the
following allowable stresses: [16]
Shear stress in steel = 45 N/mm2
Shear stress in bronze = 25 N/mm2
Bearing pressure on bronze washer = 15 N/mm2
