OBJECTIVE: To review the topic taught in Hydraulic Machinery and to verify that the students have an understanding in the theories and principles in those lessons. Hydraulic Machinery Long Quiz ME 417, ME-4 Instructions: Write your name at the top of every page, including this page. Answer the questions/problems in the space provided. A blank page is provided at the end of the exam if you need additional workspace. Calculators are allowed provided it is your own. This exam is closed book /notes and has a total 50 points. 1. The ratio of the weight of a given substance to the weight of an equal volume of a substance chosen as standard? 2. It is common to use the density of water at standard condition as 1000 kg/m3, what is the density of standard fluid at 40C in pounds per cu.ft?

3. A measure of a fluids resistance to angular deformation. 4. Property of the surface of a liquid in which the surface portion of liquid be attracted to another surface.

5. The tendency of a substance to adhere to a different molecules or substance. 6. The tendency of a substance to stick to themselves as opposed to other substances.

7. The point of any object from which the force of gravity appears to act. 8. Type of flow of fluid having Re of 1800.

9. Type of flow of fluid having Re of 4200. 10. Type of flow of fluid having Re of 3000.

11. The height to which column of fluid must rise to contain the same amount of energy as contained in one unit weight of fluid under the conditions being considered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------HYDRAULIC MACHINERY JULY 2011 ME 417, ME-4

13. In pumping installation, a valve that either allows or prohibits the flow of hydraulic fluid. 14. A hydraulic control valve that allows fluid to flow in one direction only. 15. Any opening, hole or vent used to measure the fluid flow rates from pipes discharging to the atmosphere.

PROBLEM SOLVING: INSTRUCTION: Solve the following problem below, use the worksheet page provided for the solution. (5 points each) 16. Calculate the pressure created by ocean water ( = 1.025 g/cm3), at a depth of 15.0 km. 17. A tennis ball has a density of 0.084 g/cm3 and a diameter of 3.8 cm. What force is required to submerge the ball in water?

18. If water flowed through a pipe with a diameter of 14.4 mm at 6.23 m/s, how fast (in m/s) would it flow through a pipe with a diameter of 22.4 mm? 19. Determine the flow of fluid for air having a density of 1.20 kg/m3 and an absolute viscosity of 1.79 x 10-5 Pa-s flows through a 30.48 cm diameter pipe at the rate of 1800 kg/hr.

20. The liquid inside the pipe is to be determined to where the liquid flows. What is the pressure change between A and B for flow based on the manometer reading shown?

21. A pump draws liquid from reservoir A and lifts it to reservoir B. The loss of head from A to point 1 is 3(hv) in the 15.24 cm pipe and loss of head from point 2 to B is 20(hv) in the 101.6 mm pipe. The pump discharge rate is 2400 li/min. Determine the water power of the pump if pump efficiency is 78%. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------HYDRAULIC MACHINERY JULY 2011 ME 417, ME-4

22. A pipe 500,000 mm long slope down, 1/100, tapers from 500 mm diameter at point A to 200 mm diameter at point B. The pipe carries fuel oil at 150 li/sec (SG = 0.80). If the pressure gauge at the lower ends reads 50 kPa, determine the velocity of fluid at point A and B if losses are negligible.
