OVERVIEW In so far as using this portfolio to create an ad hoc internship for reasons similar to my own for doing so I have no objection to doing so but in so far as using this portfolio to perform scheduled maintenance or otherwise please do not, this writing is purely an account of my actions during my internship and should be used as a reference guide to those of you looking to improve the value of an ad hoc internship by building on the experiences of oneself and others. To follow clearly the technical detail in this writing please be sure only quotations are made from the information referenced from technical publications and not my own personal opinions. To establish a time line pertaining to the work done during my internship, I shall include the formal dates and times of my work and holidays included in my time at StandardAero in the overview. Start Date: 27/10/08 End date: 27/04/09 No. of hours per week: 40 Start-finish time: 6.45am to 3.45pm with two half hour breaks daily. I shall also establish my location to provide continuity Standard Aero, B.V. Tilburg, 5004 JD Netherlands.

MY FIRST DAY Signing my contract was obviously the first order of the new day that had just started so after meeting my manager/mentor Erwin van Straten and his assistant Philip, we headed straight for the H.R office where the agreement could be accomplished .In the office we met with the head of that particular department, a lady called Hanneke Terburg and we got the deal done. Details of my contract (which was in Dutch) stated my pay (this covered my rent and my living expense was covered by my Irish social welfare department) that amounted to 400euros per month. It detailed the dates to and from start to finish. It detailed security policies at StandardAero and also insisted I complete my course at IT Carlow. The times and dates as well as various holiday directives pertaining to my stay in Holland were also entailed as this had been my first time in the country and I was to tour it. This contract was kept in the department office on zero hour meaning I could return to this company should a new position open up and also so that the propriety of the companies employment strategy/work done remain confidential. Immediately after I was given three StandardAero t-shirts, two bearing the old logo and one bearing the new, three StandardAero Sweaters all bearing the new logo, a StandardAero mug, book, and pen. I was also admonished with my access/clockin/shop order completion card and directed how to use it at both the clock-in/access points to the building and also at the shop order register. After this work began. After meeting some work mates, men with names like Fabian Buskins, Peter Mertz, Inneke Van Tilburg, Stefan De Laat, Ferance Van Shoofs, first names like Harry Johan and Manolo and indeed a names sake and quite possibly a relative from county Laois, Ireland Edward Lawlor. I set about doing my job interim. For this I would like to state that I have been working since I was 13 years old and attention from detail comes from the experiences Ive had working e.g under a house in upstate New York insulating with a t-shirt wrapped around my face. The plant was designed in a caress ant U-shape with engine intake at top right and and engine accessories top left, centering the letter were disassembly w.r.t R.G.B (reduction gear box), w.r.t overhaul, w.r.t central engineering, w.r.t stores, w.r.t painting, w.r.t house maintenance, w.r.t PT6/Gem 42k overhaul, w.r.t service engineering and finally as already mentioned accessories on an elevated landing clear of floor space was Sales and house maintenance stores and to the far left off the main shop floor were the management offices(near the main door).the offices where I signed my contract was to the back of the shop away from intake. After establishing myself a starting point I began.

SETTING GOALS AND SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES TO ADHERE TO MY AD HOC INTERNSHIP My main goal of my internship was to set and develop an interim relationship with my mentor as was accomplished by communicating to him I needed him during the first process of my plan from there it was well established as case and point and my efforts didnt flaw during the course of my interim due to this. Interim goals apart from this were to collect as much information regarding the interim process about the companies interim policies and interim processes to establish a point a and take the company to point B. Specific learning outcomes in the interim can be availed of and documented in the progress of doing this. Cultural, technical and interpersonal and interim communications data was collected and processed accordingly. The company plant at Tilburg employed 200+ people so this was by no means an easy feat. Plenty of bed rest and a positive attitude were going to be required. I needed my co-workers to assume I was biting off more than I could chew to appear to succeed and I did that capably. In actuality my goals could be listed as; 1.Take any idle projects and get them finished 2.Portray mistakes visible within the company clearly and concisely as needing to be remedied 3.Put forward ideas in the same manner regarding new techniques and interpersonal issues 4.Pleasantly accept the fact that others were also going to do this in the same manner and get on with it. 5.Make every effort to document the work done in a particularily good portfolio and log book. As could the specific learning outcomes in the interim; 1.Management information systems 2.Physical skills 3.Health and safety 4.Work practice, ethics and communication 5.International work placement provided education SETTING UP RECOURSES IN THE FORM OF ACCESS POINTS TO AQUIRE THE RIGHT INFORMATION BASED ON MY DAY-TO DAY ENDEAVOURS TO ACHIEVE THESE SPECIFIC GOALS AND OUTCOMES In the interim position it can be very difficult to gain full access to all that going on around as quite often people like to see between the lines but are unable to do so because of a specific job title or job function adhering to them and often some people would like to do these and stop others from doing so when absolutely necessary, in this case the role of my mentor was important as was the role of his assistant and service engineering as with my co-workers I needed to establish that I was qualified for the task at hand to the customer and this is where I found my first niche, service engineering had customer representatives for sales whos work was largely based on in informing customers of new service bulletins issue by aviation regulation authorities such as EASA and the FAA. The way to do this was through inquiries. Shop order inquiry The shop order inquiry program provides the ability to inquiry on shop order data by task control number or directly by shop order. The summary tab is displayed when you search by TCN. The summary tab contains general information about the TCN. The summary tab displays a list of shop orders for the TCN in a grid format.
