Windows: Thediscwillrunautomaticallyandyouwillseethreelaunchbuttons.ToinstallCapture, clickontheCapturelaunchbutton. Capturewillthenbeinstalledonyourcomputer. YouhavetheoptionofalsoinstallingtheCapturedemosessionbyclickingonthedemo sessionlaunchbutton.Wheninstalled,thedemosessionwillbeplacedinthe Documents/Capturefolder.

Inaudioproduction,theeditingprocesscanbeparticularlyunforgiving.Smallinaccuracieswhensplitting,moving, orperformingotheractionsonrecordedaudiocanleadtounwantedresults. Assimpleasitmayseem,theactoflisteningwhileeditingisoftenoverlooked.Forinstance,whensizingtheedges ofavocalparttoremoveunwantedsoundsbetweenwords,itistemptingtomaketheeditsbasedonthevisual representationofthewaveform.Whilethismayworksometimes,itisamuchbetterideatolistenasyousizethe eventstobesureyouarenotremovinganycriticalpartofthevocals. Mixingisthepartoftheproductionprocesswhereallrecordedtracksare combinedtomono,stereo,ormultichannelsurround.(Capturedoesnotsupport surround.)Thegoalistobalancerelativevolume,frequency,anddynamic contentinordertoachieveadesiredcohesivesound. Inthefollowingchapter,aspectsofmixingaudiorecordedinCapturewithyour StudioLivemixerwillbediscussed.
Mixing with Capture and StudioLive
NomixingisdoneinCapturedirectly.Instead,theindividualoutputsofeachaudiotrackinCapturearehardwired totheFireWirereturnsforeachcorrespondinginputchannelontheStudioLivemixer.Thus,withtheFireWire returnsengagedforeachinputchannelonyourStudioLivemixer,theoutputofyourmultitrackSessionisrouted totheStudioLivemixer,whereitcanbemixedjustlikeanyotheraudioinputs.
Creating a Mix
TheprocessofcreatingamixwithCaptureandtheStudioLivemixerisquitesimple.Youplaybackyourrecorded tracksthroughtheStudioLiveandrecordthemainoutputoftheStudioLivetotheMainAudioTrackinCapture. Theprocessworksasfollows: BesureRecordArmisdisabledforallinputAudioTracksinCapture,andtheFireWirereturnsforallinput channelsontheStudioLivemixerareengaged. SelecttheMaininputandenableRecordArmontheMainTrackinCapture. BringtheplaybackcursorpositiontothebeginningoftheSessionbyclickingtheBacktoBeginningbutton intheTransport. Overdubbing
Inastudiorecordingsession,asopposedtorecordinglive,youmightwishtorecordononlyafewtracks,orona singletrackatatime,andthenrecordmorelater.Thisprocessofaddingtoyourrecordedtrackslateriscalled overdubbing.UsingCaptureandtheStudioLivemixer,youcanplayrecordedaudioonanytracksthroughthe StudioLivemixerandsimultaneouslyrecordnewaudiototracksinCapture. Todothis,itisagoodideatofirstestablishagoodmixtolistentowhilerecording.Justaswhencreatingmonitor mixesforaliveperformancewiththeStudioLivemixer,youcancreateanumberofmixestolistentoasrequired. Forinstance,youmightcreateastereomixoftheplaybackfromCaptureonAuxes1and2foraguitaristwhois abouttooverdubaleadguitarpart.Toaccomplishthis,dothefollowing: ForallinputchannelsontheStudioLivemixeronwhichyouwishtoplaytracksfromCapture,engagethe FireWirereturnbypressingeachchannelsFireWireInputSelectswitch(nearthetopofthechannelstrip) sothatitilluminates.ThiswillroutetheoutputofthetracksinCapturetotheirrespectiveinputchannels ontheStudioLivemixer. StartplaybackinCapture.TheoutputfromeachtrackinCapturewillplaythroughtheirrespectiveinput channelsontheStudioLivemixer(CaptureTrack1onStudioLiveChannel1,etc.). Atthispoint,linkAux1and2ontheStudioLivemixerandcreateamixforthelinkedAux1/2byadjusting thelevelforeachinputchannelthathasplaybackcomingfromCapture.Thisisastereoauxmix,soyou canalsoaccessthepanforeachinputchannelinthemixbypressingtheMix/PanbuttonforAux2.(For detailsonhowtosetauxmixes,seeSection2.7oftheStudioLivemanual.) NowyoucanplugtheguitarorguitarampmicintoaninputchannelontheStudioLivemixerandsetthe inputlevelasyounormallywould.ThenaddtheguitarinputchanneltotheAux1/2mixthattheguitarist willlistentosohecanhearhimself. IfyourecordenabletheAudioTrackthatcorrespondstotheguitarinputchannelinCapture,youshould seethattrackslevelmetershowingliveinputinthemeterbridge.

Punching
Recordingcanbeactivatedatanytime,evenduringnormalplayback.Amongotherpossibilities,thisenablesyou torecordoverpartsofexistingAudioEventsonthefly,whichisusuallycalledpunching.TopunchinonanyAudio Tracks,thefirststepistorecordenablethetracks.Thenstartplaybackneartheareawhereyouwishtorecord. Whenthelocationinwhichyouwishtostartrecordingisreached,youcanquicklyenablerecordingbypressing[R] onthekeyboard.AnewAudioEventwillbeginrecordingfromthatpointontherecordenabledtracks.Whenyou reachthelocationwhereyouwishtostoprecording,punchoutbypressing[R]onthekeyboardagain. AcontinuationoftheexamplefromtheOverdubbingsectionabovewouldlookasfollows: Theguitaristmissedafewkeynoteswhilerecordinghiskillerleadpart.Youtellhimtoplaythesamepart againasbefore,butwiththecorrectednotes,whileyourecordanothertake. Theguitarstrackisstillrecordenabled.DontaddtheguitartrackfromCapturetotheauxmixyou createdbefore;theguitaristneedstohearhisliveplayingonhisguitarsStudioLiveinputchannel,notthe recordedtrack. Thistimearound,youwillpunchintherightnotesbystartingrecordingintheTransportjustbeforeeach badnote,andstoppingrecordingjustaftereachbadnote.Playbackwillcontinuetorolltheentiretimeso theguitaristwillheareverythingnormally.
