Insert Markers While Recording

Itishighlyrecommendedthatmarkersbeinsertedduringtherecordingofaliveperformance,asthemarkerswill maketherestoftheproductionprocessmucheasier.Eachoftheexamplesthatfollowbeginswiththesame scenario: YouaremixingandrecordingaliveshowusingtheStudioLivemixerandCapture.Youstartrecordingbeforethe startoftheactualperformance,andyouwillnotstoprecordinguntiltheendoftheperformance.Duringthe performance,youinsertamarkerduringthebreakbetweeneachsongofthetensongset.Attheendoftheset, youstoprecordingandsavetheSession.Youarethenreadytoshutdownyoursystem.(Remembertoshutdown inthepropersequence:firstturnthemasterleveldownontheStudioLivemixer,thenturnoffpowerampsand speakers,shutdownthecomputer,andpowerdowntheStudioLive,inthatorder.) 3.2 Studio Recording

Thestudiorecordingprocessoftenappearsverydifferentfromtheliverecordingprocess.However,the StudioLivemixerandCaptureareequallyathomeinthestudioandinconcert.Thefollowingdescribesaspectsof thestudiorecordingworkflowusingtheStudioLivemixerandCapture.

Overdubbing
Inastudiorecordingsession,asopposedtorecordinglive,youmightwishtorecordononlyafewtracks,orona singletrackatatime,andthenrecordmorelater.Thisprocessofaddingtoyourrecordedtrackslateriscalled overdubbing.UsingCaptureandtheStudioLivemixer,youcanplayrecordedaudioonanytracksthroughthe StudioLivemixerandsimultaneouslyrecordnewaudiototracksinCapture. Todothis,itisagoodideatofirstestablishagoodmixtolistentowhilerecording.Justaswhencreatingmonitor mixesforaliveperformancewiththeStudioLivemixer,youcancreateanumberofmixestolistentoasrequired. Forinstance,youmightcreateastereomixoftheplaybackfromCaptureonAuxes1and2foraguitaristwhois abouttooverdubaleadguitarpart.Toaccomplishthis,dothefollowing: ForallinputchannelsontheStudioLivemixeronwhichyouwishtoplaytracksfromCapture,engagethe FireWirereturnbypressingeachchannelsFireWireInputSelectswitch(nearthetopofthechannelstrip) sothatitilluminates.ThiswillroutetheoutputofthetracksinCapturetotheirrespectiveinputchannels ontheStudioLivemixer. StartplaybackinCapture.TheoutputfromeachtrackinCapturewillplaythroughtheirrespectiveinput channelsontheStudioLivemixer(CaptureTrack1onStudioLiveChannel1,etc.). Atthispoint,linkAux1and2ontheStudioLivemixerandcreateamixforthelinkedAux1/2byadjusting thelevelforeachinputchannelthathasplaybackcomingfromCapture.Thisisastereoauxmix,soyou canalsoaccessthepanforeachinputchannelinthemixbypressingtheMix/PanbuttonforAux2.(For detailsonhowtosetauxmixes,seeSection2.7oftheStudioLivemanual.) NowyoucanplugtheguitarorguitarampmicintoaninputchannelontheStudioLivemixerandsetthe inputlevelasyounormallywould.ThenaddtheguitarinputchanneltotheAux1/2mixthattheguitarist willlistentosohecanhearhimself. IfyourecordenabletheAudioTrackthatcorrespondstotheguitarinputchannelinCapture,youshould seethattrackslevelmetershowingliveinputinthemeterbridge.

WiththeAux1/2mixsetsothattheguitaristcanhearhisliveguitarplayingandthetracksfromCapture,youare readytorecordtheleadguitar.YoucanpositiontheplaybackcursortoanypointintheTimelinesothatrecording startsthereorjuststartrecordingfromthebeginningoftheSession.Onceyouhavetheleadguitarpartrecorded, youmightfindafewthingsyouwouldliketocorrectinthepart.Thisiswherepunching,asdescribedinthenext section,comesinhandy.
