to ask - спрашивать, просить.
to ask about - спросить о ком-либо, чем-либо / to ask for
information about someone, something.
• He asked me about my relatives. Он спросил у меня о моих
родственниках.
• Не asked me about my future plans. Он спросил у меня о моих
планах на будущее.
to ask after/ to ask for - спрашивать о ком-то, расспрашивать,
осведомляться о здоровье или о том, чем кто-то занимается / to ask
for information about how they are and what they are doing.
• Sue was asking after you. I told her you were fine. Сью спраши
вала о тебе. Я сказал ей, что у тебя все в порядке.
• Не asked after my mother. He wanted to know how she was doing.
Он спросил о моей матери. Он хотел знать, как у нее дела.
to ask over/around - просить о помощи или об информации,
расспрашивать, задавать многим людям один и тот же вопрос / to
ask several people fo r help or information or ask many people the same
question.
• I asked around to see if anyone knew someone who could rent
me a room. Я интересовался, не знает ли кто-нибудь, у кого я
могу снять комнату.
• I asked around but nobody had seen my wallet. Я всех спраши
вал, но никто не видел моего кошелька.
to ask for - 1) заказывать, просить то, что вы хотите, требо
вать / to say that you want something.
• I asked for the chicken but you have brought me the beef. Я зака
зал цыпленка, но вы принесли мне говядину.
• I must remember to ask for a receipt so that I can get reimbursed.
Мне нужно обязательно попросить чек, чтобы потом полу
чить компенсацию.
2) напрашиваться, нарываться на неприятности, лезть на ро
жон / to do something which is likely to lead to trouble or problems.
• If you go to that part of town, you're asking for trouble. It’s very
dangerous there. Если вы будете гулять в этой части города, то
вы нарветесь на неприятности. Там очень опасно.
to ask for someone - 3) спрашивать о ком-то, чтобы с ним пого
ворить / to ask to speak to them, to ask after.
•H e asked for Carol but there is no one working here called Carol.

to ask for the moon - просить невозможного,
to ask somebody for a date - просить кого-либо о встрече (сви
дании).
to ask someone in- впустить или пригласить войти в дом, в ком
нату / to invite somebody into the room or your home.
• If someone comes to the door, don’t ask them т.Если к т о - т о по

• Sometimes the neighbours ask me in for a cup of tea. Иногда со

to ask someone out - пригласить кого-либо пойти куда-ни
будь (кафе, ресторан, кино) / to invite somebody to go somewhere
with you.
• We often invite our friends out for a drink in the pub. Мы часто
приглашаем своих друзей пойти в паб выпить что-нибудь.
to ask out - назначить свидание, пригласить куда-либо / to ask
fo ra date.
• Nancy seems to have a new boy-friend. Joe asked her out last

to ask someone over - пригласить кого-то зайти к себе домой /
to invite somebody to come and visit you in your home.
• I’ve asked Diane over for a cup of coffee. Я пригласил Диану

to be down - 1) находиться в состоянии депрессии, чувство
вать себя несчастным / to be unhappy or depressed.
• Until I found a new job, I was down for a long time. Пока я не
нашел новую работу, я находился в депрессивном состоянии
долгое время.
• Sue has been down since she turned 50. Сью чувствует себя
несчастной, с тех пор как ей исполнилось 50 лет.
2) упасть, антоним - подняться / t h e opposite o f Чо be и р \ to
have fallen or got smaller.
• The dollar is down one cent against the euro. Доллар упал на 1

to be down (with) - болеть какой-либо болезнью / to be ill with =
= to go down with.
• He is down with the flu. Он болеет гриппом.
to be for - быть за; антоним - быть против / to be in favour o f
opposite o f to be against - противоречить чему-либо, противосто
ять кому-либо.
• They are for the proposal to build a swimming pool. Они - за
предложение построить бассейн.
to be in - быть дома (to be at home).
• I tried to phone Donna last night but she wasn't in. Я пыталась
дозвониться Донне, но ее не было дома.
to be in for - ожидать чего-либо (не очень хорошего, например:
погоды) / to expect something bad.
• We are in for bad weather. У нас ожидается плохая погода.
to be off - 1) уходить или уезжать, отправляться / to leave or to
start on a journey.
• We're off to Florida on Tuesday. The flight leaves at ten o’clock.
Off we go! Мы уезжаем во Флориду во вторник. Самолет от
правляется в 10. Поехали!

• Denis isn’t in his office. He's off now. Дениса нет в офисе. Он

• Don’t eat that yoghurt, I think it’s off. It’s been in the fridge for

• Yesterday electricity was off, and water was off, too. Вчера было

to be shown on TV, at the cinema, theatre etc.
• That documentary is on TV tonight but I don’t know which
channel it is on. Тот документальный фильм сегодня вечером
показывают по телевидению, но я не знаю, по какому каналу.
2) проходить где-то, иметь место / to take place.
• Let’s go shopping on Saturday. The sales are on at the moment.
Давайте пойдем за покупками в субботу. Сейчас там распро

• I think he must be deaf, the TV was on very loud. Я думаю, что
он, должно быть, глухой, телевизор работает очень громко.
• When I arrived, the lights were on but nobody was at home. Ког

to be out - 1) отсутствовать, антоним - присутствовать, нахо
диться дома / is the opposite o f to be in, not to be at home or to be
absent.
• I’m sorry but Jack's out. Can I take a message? Я сожалею, но

2) выйти из моды /to be unfashionable.
• Long skirts are out this season. Длинные юбки в этом сезоне не
в моде.
3) прекратить гореть, потухнуть / to have stopped burning (of
light/fire).
• The fire is out - that’s why it’s cold here. Камин потух - вот
почему здесь холодно.

работу и т.д. / to have ended a relationship/ job etc.
• I am through with John; he is so selfish. Я больше не общаюсь с
Джоном, он такой эгоист.
to be up - 1) повышаться (о ценах), расти / to have risen, to get
higher.
• Prices are up more than ten per cent. Цены повысились больше,
чем на 10 процентов.
2) происходить.
• W hat's up? Что случилось?
3) закончиться (о времени) / to end (about time).
• Your time is up, hand in your papers, please. Ваше время истек
ло, сдавайте работы, пожалуйста.
to be up to - 1) быть в состоянии что-либо сделать (to be ca
pable of).
• Let’s take the train. I don’t think I am up to driving so far. Давай
поедем поездом. Я думаю, что не смогу вести машину так да
леко.
2) замышлять что-то (недоброе, неправильное) / to feel like
doing something (something -wrong).
• The children must be up to something - they are very quiet.
Должно быть, дети что-то замышляют - они так притихли.
3) зависеть от кого-либо.
• It's up to us to us to help those in need. Помощь тем, кто нуж
дается, зависит от нас.
to be with - поддерживать кого-либо, быть на чьей-то сторо
не / to be on the same side with someone.
• I’m afraid I am not quite with you. Боюсь, я не совсем на вашей
стороне.

• A tree was blocking the road. It had been blown down in the
storm. Дерево лежало поперек дороги. Оно было повалено на
землю штормом.
to blow off - сорвать, перевернуть, уносить ветром / means that
the winds removes something from a position on something. i
• I was trying to pick up my hat that had been blown off injthe
wind. Я пытался подобрать свою шляпу, сорванную ветром
(которая была сорвана ветром).
to blow out - гасить, тушить, задувать (пламя, огонь, костер) /
to extinguish a fire or flame.
• I couldn't light the campfire. The wind kept blowing it out. Я не
мог зажечь костер. Ветер все время его задувал.
to blow out one's brain - пустить пулю в лоб.
to blow over - 1) проходить, миновать, заканчиваться (о дис
куссии, неприятностях, кризисе, грозе) / means that an argument or
some trouble has come to an end.
• I thought that the argument would quickly blow over but it
didn’t. Я подумал, что дискуссия скоро закончится, но она
продолжалась.
• All that has blown over now. We’ve forgotten about it. Все про
шло. Мы уже все забыли.
2) переворачивать, опрокидывать.
to blow up - 1) взрывать(ся), взлетать на воздух / to destroy
something by an explosion.
• The vehicle was blown up when it drove over a landmine. Маши
на взорвалась, наехав на мину.
2) терять самообладание, выходить из себя, сердиться / to lose
one’s temper, to become very angry.
• My parents blew up when they found me smoking. Мои родители
были очень рассержены, когда обнаружили меня курящим.
3) надувать (шары, шины), раздувать / to put air into something.
• That tire looks flat. I must go to blow it up. Шина выглядит
спущенной. Нужно ее надуть.
• I spent the afternoon blowing up balloons for the party. Вторую
половину дня я провел надувая шарики к вечеринке.
4) раздувать, преувеличивать (скандал, историю) / to exagerate.
• The papers blew the news up. Газеты раздули эту новость до
невероятных размеров.

• My grandparents brought me up after my parents died. Дедушка

tion a subject, start talking about a subject.
• My mother walks out of the room when my father brings up

to carry over - отложить, перенести на другое время, дату / to
take something that you earn or are given in one year or period o f time
into the next one carry-over.
• You are not allowed to carry over holiday entitlement from one
year into the next. Вам нельзя переносить отпуск с одного года

to carry out - проводить (эксперименты), выполнять / to con
duct an experiment.
• The investigators have been carrying out tests on the pieces of
plane recovered after the accident. Исследователи проводили

• A strange man came up to me and asked me for a wallet. Стран

to come up with найти (ответ, решение), обдумать (идею,
план) / to think of,to imagine a solution or idea.
• Who do you think came up with the idea of the bicycle? Кто, вы

to fall apart -1 ) разваливаться, рассыпаться, сломаться / to
break into pieces because it is badly made.

швам.
2) разваливаться (о группе, команде) / to stop working properly
or efficiently.
• The group fell apart when two or three members left and no one

to fall back on something - прибегнуть к чему-либо, к чьей-либо
