POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS: WEDNESDAY 26TH NOVEMBER 2008

Interactive Workshop A: 08:30- 11:30

Improve planning and operation for your HP/HT wells by using dynamic tools
This hands-on workshop will explore in detail the benefits that you can get from applying advanced dynamic tools in both the design and operational follow-up of challenging HP/HT wells. In this interactive session, you will examine key methods to improve the planning and operations for even your most challenging HP/HT wells. Through presentations and group exercises you will have a chance to discuss key HP/HT operational challenges with your peers and explore how dynamic tools can save you time and money when carrying out your HP/HT operations. In particular, you will: Explore the modeling of Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) and Equivalent Static Density (ESD) and the impact of changes in operational conditions Identify effects such as surge, swab and gelling Examine thermal effects in the well and the impact on your operations Understand why finding the kick tolerance is an important part of the well design Explore the benefits of kick tolerance modeling Meet your expert workshop facilitator: Anne Sofie H. Flateb, Manager, DRILLBENCH CONSULTANCY SERVICES, SPT GROUP Anne Sofie Flateb holds a masters degree in chemical engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. She is Manager for Drillbench consultancy services in SPT Group, performing studies in dynamic modeling within flow assurance, dynamic well control and dynamic hydraulics and temperature effects.

Interactive Workshop B: 11:45- 14:45

Calculate and compare the true cost of high-density completion and workover brines in HP/HT well constructions
The true cost of a high-density completion and workover brine is more than just its purchase or rental price. Fluid handling, transport, waste disposal and HSE risk all add to the final bill paid by you. In order to make an informed brine purchasing decision the HSE risk posed by the brines must be systematically quantified and included in the overall cost equation. This interactive session will present a methodology for comparing the overall cost and HSE risk of HP/HT completion brines. The methodology allows you to compare brines with different pricing models (e.g. direct purchase versus rental) and calculate the overall cost associated with using the fluid. Supported by BrineWise, an easy to use Excel tool, the method is systematic and comprehensive yet fast and easy to use. BrineWise allows you to visualise the impact that using high-density brine has across the board on the economics of a HP/HT well construction project. With no simulations and no statistics, the tool gives a clear and unbiased overview of the true costs of using high-density brine systems. Input and calculations cover the following areas: Includes 1. The cost of brines with different pricing models 2. Brine transport risk and costs working lunch 3. The cost of using the brines including: a. Sub-optimal rig time, such as flow-back time for well testing b. Waste volumes and disposal costs, including contaminated produced water c. Handover to production and clean up d. Normal operations-related HSE costs 4. The cost of HSE risk potential and potential for incident-related legal costs and liabilities Understand how the ability of BrineWise to calculate and present all brine-related costs makes it a powerful tool for supporting informed brine-purchasing decisions. In the workshop you can try the BrineWise tool and even use your own input data to discover the true cost of using heavy completion and workover brines. Meet your expert workshop facilitator: Ylva Gilbert, BSc (Biochem), MSc (Resource management) is the HSSE Business Director of GAIA CONSULTING OY. Previously base in the UK as a consultant to the North O&G sector with a focus on chemicals, Gilbert joined Gaia in 2004. Recent work includes developing the National Strategy for Transport of Dangerous Goods (Finland), evaluating the national approach to Safety Assessment Reports under the Seveso Directive as well as several practical and pragmatic tools to the oilfield and chemical industry. With a background in both science and management, Gilbert combines in depth substance knowledge with a broad experience in working with the drilling community to meet both complex regulatory demands and find practical, cost efficient solutions to chemical management.

Interactive Workshop C: 15:00- 18:00

Develop sustainable HP/HT well integrity for the future in your HP/HT projects
Senior Scientist Preben Randhol and Research Director Inge Manfred Carlsen from SINTEF Petroleum Research will guide you through this interactive workshop using case study examples. During the in-depth discussion session, you will have the opportunity to exchange your experience and share your ideas: Explore the status of sustainable well integrity and lessons learned Understand the major issues and challenges with HP/HT well integrity Get to grips with prediction and monitoring issues Carry out effective well integrity management Gain insight into which remediation possibilities exist Determine possible well design improvements for future wells Meet your expert workshop facilitators: Preben Randhol, Senior Scientist, SINTEF PETROLEUM RESEARCH Dr. Preben has 12 years of experience conducting international R&D projects for the petroleum industry.
