University of Colorado Boulder Office of Orientation 143 UCB Boulder, Colorado 80309-0143

Congratulations! We are excited that you are joining both the student body at this world-class institution and the vibrant community of Boulder. Please be sure you print BOTH your confirmation page from the website indicating your reserved orientation dates AND any information from this document you wish to bring to campus, including the parking permit. Be sure to read carefully through this packet. Included are orientation check-in details, a preparation checklist, a parking permit and instructions for using it, maps of campus, and important campus phone numbers. You will need all of these things to prepare for orientation, advising, registration, and your first taste of campus life. A limited parent/guest program is offered for those joining transfer students. Getting Around
Because you must be on time for orientation, please allow plenty of time to walk from your car to orientation check-in. Construction Alert! A major construction project on Broadway will make access to campus from Broadway extremely slow, particularly from the north. We highly recommend that you avoid the Broadway/Euclid Avenue

(also known as 16th Street) intersection when you make your travel plans to campus. The orientation check-in location has moved for summer 2011 due to the Broadway/ Euclid underpass project. Our orientation maps direct you to use the east entrances to campus, which should be relatively easier to navigate. Anyone who needs assistance with these directions is encouraged to contact our office well in advance of their visit.

Preparing for Orientation

Check-In Information
Residence Hall Check-In (for students who submitted a residence hall application and received a housing assignment)
Residence halls will allow transfer students attending the August orientation to move in on August 15. While the halls open at 10:00 a.m., students are in mandatory orientation meetings at this time. We encourage you to check in at the front desk of your assigned hall during lunchtime or after orientation is completed for the day.

Student Orientation Check-In

Orientation check-in will be from 7:00 to 7:55 a.m. on the south plaza of the Visual Arts Complex (VAC). Your first meeting begins promptly at 8:00 a.m in the University Memorial Centers Glenn Miller Ballroom. (The UMC is adjacent to the VAC.)

Orientation Start and End Times

Students
Orientation begins at 8:00 a.m. Please plan ahead. There is a significant walk from the free orientation parking lots (in the Kittredge area) to the orientation check-in. It is likely that you will finish with orientation by 5:00 p.m. However, some students may need to return to campus the next day for additional academic advising and registration assistance. Please plan to have some flexibility in your schedule to allow for this if necessary. It is required that you attend all of the orientation programming in order to successfully complete your fall registration. Please make your travel arrangements accordingly.

Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities or Temporary Injuries during Orientation

You may request disability accommodations for orientation (interpreting services, disability parking, accessible seating, etc.) by contacting the Office of Orientation at least two weeks before orientation begins. Call 303-492-4431. It is important that students requiring sign language interpretation contact us well in advance of their orientation so sign language interpreters can be arranged. Orientation guests who are visually impaired may request a variety of accommodations including Braille translation of materials and navigation assistance. Because there are significant distances between buildings used during orientation, we suggest that students using

manual wheelchairs and students who have temporary injuries or mobility impairments contact us in advance of orientation so accommodations may be arranged. For detailed information about Disability Services, visit www.colorado.edu/disabilityservices.

Altitude Notes
You may not immediately sense a difference when you arrive in Boulder, but when traveling from near sea level, you will have gained more than one mile in elevation. You may experience a slight feeling of breathlessness because of the reduced amount of oxygen at this altitude (5,400 feet). To adjust smoothly to the change in altitude, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and rest often, especially if you feel out of breath or develop a headache.

Preparation Checklist
Required
Complete your placement tests. If you have not yet completed your placement tests, you must do so as soon as possible to ensure proper course placement and to make the most of your advising meetings during orientation. Familiarize yourself with advising materials. Review the academic information for your college and major and bring a tentative list of courses for your semester with you. Begin your planning at academic advising. Familiarize yourself with registration materials Familiarize yourself with the online course listings and the University of Colorado Boulder Catalog, and go to the Guest Course Search to get started on searching for courses and planning your schedule. Keep in mind that spaces in courses are reserved for incoming students, so you cant always tell ahead of time if a course is going to be available. Buff OneCards (CU student ID) All students must apply for a student ID card by submitting a photo online at www.BuffOneCard.com or when applying with Housing & Dining Services. Please apply and submit an electronic photo no later than July 22, 2011. Your card will be processed during the summer and you will pick it up at your residence hall when you move in or at the Buff OneCard office in the Center for Community, room N180, if you are living off campus. A governmentissued photo ID like a drivers license is required to pick up your student ID card. The Buff OneCard will be used during your entire career at CU-Boulder. The card is required as official verification of eligibility for many student privileges including access to residence halls, dining and laundry in the halls, the Student Recreation Center, all campus libraries, Wardenburg Health Center, athletic events, and riding the RTD buses for free. For more information go to www.BuffOneCard.com or call 303-492-0355. Remember your IdentiKey. You needed to activate your identikey in order to make your orientation reservation. Students must memorize and keep this information secure as they will need it for class reservations. If you have forgotten it, please visit cuidm.colorado.edu to reset your account prior to orientation. Print the parking permit included in this Planning Guide. You will need to bring your parking permit with you to campus and place it on your dashboard to avoid a parking ticket.
