1.a) From the following data of 125 students determine the modal
weight:

2.a) Define moment generating function. Find the moment generating


function of the random variable x having the probability density
function
f(x) = x for 0 ≤ x < 1

b) Explain the need of sampling and various methods of sampling.

3.a) The height and body weights of ten males are given below.
Calculate the coefficient of correlation.

4. What is time series. Discuss the importance of time series analysis.


For the following data calculate 5 yearly and 7-yearly moving
averages.

5.a) A test of the fidelity and selectivity of 190 radio receivers produced
the following data.

Use 0.01 level of significance to test whether there is a relationship


between fidelity and selectivity.

b) Two samples of 6 and 7 items have the following values for a


variable.

Do the sample variances differ significantly?


(Given F0.05 (5, 6) = 4.95 )

6.a) In tossing 3 coins at a time, find the probability of getting:


i) atmost one head
ii) atleast one head
iii) exactly 2 heads.
b) In a bolt factory machines A, B, C manufacture 25%, 35%, 40%
respectively out of the total of their output 5, 4, 2 percents are
effective bolts. A bolt is drawn at random and is found to be
defective. What are the probabilities that it was manufactured by
machines A, B and C?

7.a) A manufacturer of cotter pins knows that 5% of his product were


defective. If he sells cotter pins in boxes of 100 and guarantees that
not more than 10 pins will be defective, what is the probability that a
box will fail to meet the guaranteed quality.
b) The average seasonal rainfall in a place is 16 inches with standard
Deviation of 4 inches. What is the probability that in a year the
rainfall in that place will be between 20 and 24 inches?
c) The heights of 10 males of a given locality are found to be 70, 67,
62, 68, 61, 68, 70, 64, 64, 66 inches. Is it reasonable to believe that
the average height is greater than 64 inches?

Given that the critical value of ‘t’ for 9 degrees of freedom at 5% level
of significance for right tailed test is 1.833.

8.a) Find the mean, variance of the following density function:

b) Find the characteristic function of a random variable x defined as:

=1 for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1
