FIELD UPDATE-JULY 2011

Cote dIvoire
Distributed 1,500 prenatal kits and 500 delivery kits this past month to health centers. Distributed medicines to clinics and hospitals in the emergency IDP project site where so far 3,000 IDPs have received treatment. In addition, MAPCI set up a medical team coordinated by a doctor to assist patients and coordinate activities.

Kenya
A baseline survey was conducted in the new Burangi Total Health Village in the Malindi district. The objectives of the survey were to assess household water and sanitation practices, the disease burden, and the economic situation (the ability of the people to pay for health services). Farmer groups in the Kagwa Total Health Village are encouraging and learning best practices from one another, and they are in the process of opening bank accounts through which they will learn about budgeting, saving, debt management, record keeping, and starting a business.

Indonesia
269 people received basic medical treatment through the Tello Mobile Clinic, including 37 children under 5 who have been immunized. The TMC team also facilitated health education, and handed out posters and stickers with key nutrition and TB prevention information.

Ghana
MAP is now a founding member of the National Steering Committee on Prevention of Disability (POD) in Buruli Ulcer serving as an advocate for more widespread information and prevention activities. Worked with community members to establish 3 Village Savings and Loans associations in Tumiamayenko to help community members mobilize funds for farming and other livelihood activities. So far, 40 women and 37 men have mobilized the equivalent of $265. Participated and Supported Project Okurase (founded by a Map fellow) to undertake a village Health and evangelism Outreach Programme. Community members were screened for various disease conditions with treatments given. About 1,350 people were treated for various ailments. 3 people gave their lives to the lord newly from the one on one sharing of the gospel and many recommitted their lives to Jesus.

Honduras
Five communities including the Nueva Armenia THV received support in caring for malnourished children. Undernourished children under five will receive supplemental nutritional bars and will be monitored and weighed regularly by health promoters to track improvements.

Bolivia
Health Promoters organized workshops on waste disposal, nutrition, education, intensive organic gardening, and other topics this past month with a total attendance of 143 people. Three communities have committed to participation in a two-year Chagas project in their communities. They will receive training on prevention and treatment and will join together in an effort against the NTD.

Ecuador
Health Promoters attended over 750 people in their communities, spreading health knowledge and promoting healthy behaviors. MAP provided training for health promoters who manage community pharmacies on handling generic medicines and helped with deworming of children. Health promoters are also aiding families with undernourished and sick children to cultivate their gardens for a healthier diet. In the Valle del Toachi community, people continue to collect and fill bottles to be used for building the health house.

Uganda
In the Abala Total Health Village 188 households have cleared land for a garden of at least an acre each (with a total of 282 acres cleared). The community met and decided that their most pressing need is for sunflower seeds, so procurement is in process and families will receive and plant the seeds soon. In the Kacheri Total Health Village, families planted sorghum, ground nuts, and neem trees in response to the communitys need for greater livelihood security.
