NTRODUCTION

The need for facilities for orphans in the developing world needs no introduction. Pakistan, being a developing country, suffers from the problems that most developing countries do and as such has above normal levels of orphans and illiteracy. Earthquake of October 8, 2005 left millions homeless in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Northern Areas of Pakistan. More than 76000 were dead and over 100000 among injured as a result of this earthquake; Based on the 1998 Population Census, there were approximately 10,000 full orphans before the earthquake. According to projections from the Camp Survey conducted by the Population Council, the earthquake has caused approximately 1,700 full orphans and close to 18,800 orphans by father and 22,000 orphans by mother. In these conditions the idea for the establishment of a well-equipped orphan care facility was originated and thus Miri Roshni Academy United in Excellence has been constructed at Rawalakot.

VISION
To provide equal opportunities and resources those are essential for the growth and development of the most vulnerable groups in post-earthquake society, the orphans. To provide a facility second to none for the upkeep of these needy children to make them into well rounded, educated and model citizens able to give back to society.

Concept MRA aims to provide all the opportunities essential for the emotional, psychological and physical growth of this under privileged segment of the society. The village will provide all the resources essential for the care, and growth of this marginalized segment that needs specific care. The component parts of MRA include: Mother: Mother is the key person in MRA after the children themselves. The mother is focal person of all the activities inside the homes. She is required to help understand the psychological conditions of all the children. She builds an affiliation with each child based on love, care and affection. She takes care of the children according to their needs. She makes the children comfortable at home and helps them adjust in a friendly atmosphere with others inside the home and eventually develops a relationship amongst them that will reflect sibling relationships. She is responsible for the running of home and serves these children as head of the home. She cooks, cleans and feeds the children. She also helps children in their daily homework and takes them out for a walk and for recreational activities. She helps children understand basic life skills and basic Islamic values. Family: The family represents the basic unit of the MRA. Each family consists of a mother and all the children living in single home. These children include boys and girls. These boys and girls lives together reflecting sibling relations with each other and call each other bhae (brother) and behan (sister). Home: Each child belongs to a home. He/she shares the premises with their kin. He/she has his/her own bed and space. He/she has his/her own writing table, chair, and wardrobe. This arrangement shall remain until they reach puberty at which alternative arrangements are made Youth Hostel. Miri Roshni Academy (MRA): 10 families living together form Miri Roshni Academy. Each family is a separate unit. The interaction between the families will help to develop a social relationship amongst the children. Occasionally, these families get together for planned social interaction. However it will be desirable that these families develop a natural mutual relationship reflecting a normal neighborhood and community. At present MRA has five homes where 50 children live with their foster mothers in a separate home. Youth Hostels: Boys coming of the age will be shifted to live separately from their mothers and sisters. They will live in youth hostels. The girls however remain in the same family home with the mother. She will be in the care of the mother as well as help her in caring for her younger brothers and sisters. A youth hostel will have to be constructed within next 8 years when most of the present children reach adolescence. Formal Education Facility: A well-established school for the formal education of boys and girls has been established with an English Medium Oxford Based Syllabus. Religious Education Facility: A Central mosque for religious education and worship will be established. The Imam masjid (religious teacher) will teach these children the basics of religion. At present children attend a local community mosque. Basic Health care: A dispensary will be established in the Village to provide basic health facilities. A volunteer doctor will visit the village on a weekly basis. A permanent Dispenser will remain present permanently. At present space is available for this facility, however, services are not started.

Career Counseling: The facility will guide the youth to choose their future occupation. Support from volunteer professionals would be sought for this. Future Support: The young who will choose vocational trainings will be facilitated to get required training at a Vocational Training Centre. It is hoped that such a facility will also form part of the village although out-sourcing is an option. While Human Appeal International and Al-Mustafa Trust Internationals Sponsorship Scheme may provide limited scholarships for students who wish to continue their education too.
