When it comes to reliability in security systems, our transformers provide the key

How we are working for you to maintain our leadership in the security transformer market
A critical factor in that leadership has been our ability to understand the needs of the market and keep up with technology. As a result, installers of all kinds of security systems know that they find exactly the correct ATC- FROST transformer to meet their needs. If they have any doubts, we will help them make the right choice. We can only do that by having a thorough knowledge of security applications.

Advanced technology Of course, knowledge of the application requirements is only part of the answer. The rest comes in our product development that has the primary goal of staying ahead technologically. For example, you will see on these pages many transformers designed specifically for security applications. Note in particular our new series of transformers combined with fusing and convenient terminations all mounted in a cabinet. This product has been designated FCS Series Camera Power Supply (See next page).

Specialized Software All of our transformers for security use are the product of modern design systems based on specialized computer software. In other words, many aspects of the transformers you see here are exclusive to ATC- FROST and not available anywhere else. We manufacture our transformers in two manufacturing plants that employ the latest production and testing equipment to produce superior products that meet ISO standards. So you know the security systems you install using our transformers will themselves be secure because of the high reliability we build into them.

Go with the leader and be secure. Install ATC-FROST transformers.

Class 2
Selection Guide
Two Categories to Choose From:
Fully Certified Class 2 Transformers A Fully Certified Class 2 transformer is designed for permanent, wired-in, field applications where the extra reliability of professional wiring practices and electrical box mounting is required or desired. Fully certified models have 1/2 conduit nipple or 4 plate mounting. ATC-FROST series to review are FTC, FTD and FTK. Plug-in Class 2 Transformers Plug-in versions of Class 2 transformers are often requested because the need for a qualified technician to install this type of transformer is not required. Both Direct Plug-in and Cord Connected Plug-in models need additional certification due to their portable nature. ATC-FROST models are all subsequently certified to C22.2 No. 223-M91 and the Direct Plug-in models are also CSA (NRTL/C) certified to UL1310. ATC-FROST series to review are FPS and FTA. Doing their Job As mentioned under Where and why are Class 2 Transformers Required?, a Class 2 transformer is DESIGNED TO FAIL in the event of an overload or short circuit. Typical fault conditions which could produce a transformer failure include, but are not limited to, the following: improper voltage section; too many devices powered by one transformer; a pinched or stapled wire; a wiring mistake; or a faulty connected device. ATC-FROST is unable to warranty a Burnt-out Class 2 transformer that has obviously done its job by protecting a fault condition. A failed Class 2 transformer can be recognized by one of two methods and should not be returned for replacement or credit. Most models will show open on the primary leads or plug-in blades with a simple ohmmeter check A limited number of models marked Fused Secondary Do Not Short will show open on the secondary terminals with an ohmmeter check.

What is a Class 2 Transformer?

In practical terms, this type of transformer has protection designed in to limit its output current to a maximum of 8 amps at one minute under all loading conditions including a short circuit. The maximum secondary voltage may not exceed 30 VRMS when the primary is connected to its rated input values. To meet approval, a Class 2 transformer may not show any evidence of a fire or shock hazard, even as it fails to operate.

Energy Limiting and Non-energy Limiting

An Energy-Limiting Class 2 transformer has enough winding impedance to limit its output current. Typically poor voltage regulation is to be expected because of this high impedance but is not normally a concern. An energy-limiting transformer may or may not also be provided with an overtemperature device to limit its maximum temperature. A Non-energy Limiting Class 2 transformer does not have enough winding impedance to limit the output current and is equipped with a fuse or other overcurrent device. Typically better voltage regulation is to be expected as the winding impedance can be similar to a conventional power transformer.

Where and Why are Class 2 Transformers Required?

A Class 2 transformer is considered to be a safety device and indeed is a requirement in the Electrical Code for supplying power to a Class 2 circuit. These circuits typically consist of lightweight, unprotected bell wiring, and devices which often have exposed or easily accessible terminals. Because of the risk of mechanical damage or overloading, the transformer protecting the Class 2 circuit is designed to fail in a safe manner and guard against fire and shock risk. Typical installations which employ Class 2 wiring methods include: Security Systems Humidifiers Central Vacuum Systems P.O.P. Displays Door Chimes Intercoms Thermostats Vending Machines Garage Door Openers Fire Alarm Sensors Remote Controls Lighting Controls
