A.) Introduction
Hi, Im Frederick Victor Paredes Aana, a Fine Arts graduate of Far Eastern University, Philippines. This book features my suggested modifications for the Baybayin script if Baybayin should be revived. Most of the basic characters were patterned on the Baybayin Lopez Font while the character for "ra" was taken from the Bikol Mintz Font. This book features my Modified Baybayin Font Styles - each font style has a downloadable True Type Font version. This book includes my suggested abbreviations in Baybayin for words that Filipinos often abbreviate.

1.) What is Baybayin?

Baybayin was the written language used by early Filipinos during the pre-Hispanic occupation. It had 3 vowels and 14 consonants. To view the transliteration chart, click here. Baybayin was a syllabic writing system, which means that each consonant had an inherent a sound while other vowel sounds were represented by vowel markers (for details, see Filipino Script Symbols Chart). Another name for Baybayin is Alibata. Baybayin later fell into disuse years after the arrival of the Spaniards and when the Roman alphabet was introduced. For more information about the extinction of Baybayin script, see http://www.mts.net/~pmorrow/bayeng1.htm#lost

2.) New Basic Characters

Unlike the traditional Baybayin which only had 17 basic characters, my Modified Baybayin has 26 basic characters. Thats because I created additional consonants to make my Modified Baybayin more complete.

3.) Modified Vowel Markers

There are markers for other vowel sounds:

I modified the vowel markers for consonants with an inherent i, e, u and o sound. The inherent a sound is muted by a cross-shaped marker. (To view the complete Transliteration Chart, click here.) Examples:

4.) The word mga

The word mga (pronounced as ma-nga) is spelled the way it is pronounced.

5.) New Punctuations

6.) Numerals

7.) Mathematical Symbols

8.) Others

7 Below is a sample text in my Modified Baybayin script (using the Guhit Baybayin Font). It is the Tagalog translation of Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Notice that I always use the symbol to separate words:

- Transliteration:

Ang lahat ng tao'y isinilang na malaya at pantay-pantay sa karangalan at mga karapatan. Sila'y pinagkalooban ng katwiran at budhi at dapat magpalagayan ang isa't isa sa diwa ng pagkakapatiran. - Translation: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. (Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
