Novel Contest - this is a club and district contest: Competitors (paid up members) read the first 3 minutes of their chosen 5 minute story which they must have written themselves. The Novel can be Adventure, Romance, Historical, Thriller, etc, during which time the plot, the period and the principal characters should be established. The audience votes for the story of which they want most to hear the ending. Impromptu Speech Contest this is purely a club contest. Competitors each have 10 minutes to prepare a five minute speech on a previously unknown topic. The audience votes for the best performance. Remember that only fully paid up members may enter competitions. Trophies to be held for one year and returned in time for them to be presented to the new winner by the previous winner. Topics Contest. This is a club and district contest: Competitors (paid up members) all do a 3 minute impromptu speech to the same topic Speech Contest. This a club, area and district contest. Competitors (paid up members) deliver a speech of 6-8 minutes duration. Evaluation Contest. This a club, area and district contest. Competitors (paid up members) have 4 minutes to deliver an evaluation. Topic/Mini-Debate: Presenters from the audience have a topic for which they have to give both sides of the issue (2 minutes just like a normal topic but shorter), after which the presenter chairs a debate on the topic (6 minutes) ensuring that all in the audience participate if they want to (the presenter should not intervene with his/her own views during this time, and then the presenter sums up the debate, again, without introducing any fresh information at this time, but must simply sum up the views given during the debate. Times = 2 + 6 + 1 = 9 minutes. The General Evaluator should evaluate the chairman, evaluators, topics chair and contestants, but NOT the speeches, unless an evaluator has missed something, such as offering constructive advice. The General Evaluator should judge whether the mini-debate presenter summed up both sides, brought in other members, summed up well and gave a balanced conclusion, and whether the debate, and indeed the whole night, went well overall.
