Cultural Crafting
Honduras - Decorate mini crosses Egypt - Create a Pharaoh mask Russia - Create Faberg Eggs Laos - Ceramics

July 20, 27 and August 3, 10

All activities at the Senior Center, 9471 Dorothy Blvd., 10 a.m.-noon.

In preparation for Diversity Month this fall, we are holding volunteer crafting sessions.

On Dia de la Cruz (Day of the Cross), May 3, people of Honduras and other Latin American countries decorate a cross outside their homes or in public places to mark the start of the rainy season. Pharaohs were the political and religious leaders of the Egyptian people. Learn more about some of the most famous pharaohs while creating your mask. In Russia, the Easter celebration is very important to the Orthodox faith. Elaborately decorated eggs are exchanged as a symbol of renewed life and hope.

In Laos fragments of glazed and unglazed ceramic pieces have been unearthed and dated as early as the 15th century. Some villages in Laos still continue the art of ceramic production.

Volunteers are welcome to take home project samples!

Cara sWim Team

This recreational swim team, sponsored by the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, is an excellent opportunity to introduce ages 6-18 to the fun and excitement of competitive swimming. Our coaches will work to create a nurturing environment that focuses on good sportsmanship. Some time will be given to competitive stroke techniques, however, due to the nature of a swim team environment, individual attention will be limited. Participants need not have any competitive experience, BUT must be able to swim 25 yards/full length of the pool without stopping crawl stroke (freestyle). This year all swimmers 9 years and under will need to attend a team tryout in order to participate on the team. Tryouts will be held Tuesday, April 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday April 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Prior to registration May 5, the practice times will be Monday-Thursday, 6:30-8:45 a.m. Get Better Fridays will be held every Friday from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Individual placement within this time frame will take place after registration. More details will be given during the parent meeting held on Friday, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. In addition, we will have swimsuit and other accessories fittings and sales.
