A Leader in Metalworking Innovations

Innovation at ISCAR clearly begins with its technologically advanced research & development department. Approximately 10% of ISCARs total resources are dedicated to R&D. As a result, time and time again the company has developed and contributed to the metalworking industry many original products and cost saving processes to provide bottleneck solutions. ISCAR is constantly upgrading and implementing improvements in computerization, data flow, quality assurance and employee safety.

Global Support
In order to facilitate machine tool builders, ISCAR has organized product manager groups with dedicated tool designers and field engineers. ISCAR is known for its advanced solutions for the most demanding challenges in the machine tool builders industry. ISCAR offers technical support and several manufacturing facilities around the globe.

A Global Metalworking Company

In a world of different languages and different mentalities, it is important to have a fully equipped, knowledgeable local supplier to meet your needs. ISCAR knows this. We have subsidiary offices and agents located in 52 major industrial countries. In some of the larger countries, regional offices have been opened to bring ISCAR personnel and facilities as close as possible to customer production sites. Many of our subsidiaries have fully equipped training centers. These centers are dedicated to providing a local location where metalworking personnel can be trained in the latest techniques and products for metal removal.

ISCAR has global manufacturing facilities in each of the following countries: In Europe France Germany Italy Spain Switzerland Turkey Hungary Slovenia In the Americas Argentina Brazil United States In Asia South Korea China Israel

The Development Stages

Each new product begins as an idea in an engineers mind. The image is entered into a computer aided design/machining (CAD/CAM) program. A prototype is produced and goes through exhaustive analyses. Repeated refinements, analyses, and testing continue until the exact results are achieved. Only after such an extensive development and testing sequence can the new idea move from the prototype phase to development for manufacturing.

Metal Cutting Leadership

The increased popularity of composites in aerospace applications creates new challenges for shops that are used to cutting metal. One of these substances, carbon fiberreinforced plastic (CFRP), can be especially difficult to drill because instead of executing a clean cut, tools often push through the material. At ISCAR we realize that these materials are extremely abrasive and difficult to machine, as a result of the different physical properties of the materials used in the layers that make these composites hard, tough and strong. Due to the harsh cutting environment, tool life can be very short when machining CFRP composites. As the exact formula of what these composites are made from is not known, it can be difficult to design appropriate tools. Much of ISCARs R&D resources are spent to solve the problem of machining these complex materials. The machining of materials which are used for advanced types of aircraft demands new processes, as these difficult materials are lightweight, yet very strong. The tooling that shops commonly use for machining CFRP features long-lasting diamond PCD insert drills, vein PCD drills or brazed mandrel tools. When machining composites such as CFRP there is no chip to speak of. Instead, the material removal mechanism might be better described as shattering. The impact of the cutting edge fractures the hard carbon fibers, instead of shearing material away. This process causes the cutting edge considerable abrasion that can lead to rapid wear. In composite machining, as well as any cutting tool application, tool geometry drives cutting performance. However, in composites, tool material also becomes a driver of performance. Unless the edge material can withstand the abrasion well enough to hold its geometry and stay sharp, the tool can wear so rapidly that the geometry can change rapidly as well.

eliver inig y D of it abil t Pr

Guara ISCAR ntees Resul ts

In order to successfully machine CFRP ISCAR has developed , hard, sharp solid-carbide tools which are coated with hard, long-lasting diamond. The diamond coating used is commonly a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) coating. However, a diamond coating applied by the chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) process is the only coating that utilizes 100% real diamond crystals. A large advantage of CVD diamond coatings is that they reduce heat and friction created by the highly abrasive composite. Though the machining operations required for composite parts may be simple (sometimes only drilling and trimming), the fixtures designed to support these parts can be small feats of engineering themselves. Thus, the fixture for machining a composite part can be a considerable engineering investment. Clean cutting without fraying, delamination or otherwise separation of the layers, requires the part to be firmly secured against vibration.

Quality Standard
ISCAR has been certified by the prestigious Standards Institution, as being in full compliance with quality standards AS 9100, ISO 9001:2000, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001. Incoming batches of carbide powders are carefully analyzed to ensure that the raw materials do not deviate from set standards. ISCARs engineers work closely with advanced aerospace industries in order to understand their new demands for efficient machining of lightweight composites. In addition, completed products are inspected before shipping, to ensure delivery of the finest quality goods. Quality control facilities include the metallurgical laboratory, raw metal testing, an online testing procedure and a machining center for tool performance testing and final product inspection. Only the finest products are packaged for entry into ISCARs inventory.

Their unique ground geometry provides excellent surface finish and long tool life, while machining at high material removal rates. Solid Carbide endmills Can be used for up to 2xD full slot machining of alloy and stainless steel, titanium and exotic materials.

BALLPLUS is a multifunction system comprised of various shank options and 6 milling head types. Each shank has the ability to carry any one of the milling head types. Clamping and indexing of the milling heads is very simple. It can be done while the tool remains clamped on the machine - therefore no setup time is necessary after indexing. A unique pocket design enables a very firm insert clamping, edge position accuracy and no insert pullout problems. BALLPLUS is an ideal system for reducing tool inventory. It is an attractive option for the die and mold industry and for any industry which uses many different endmills for its production applications.

This new ball nose endmill performs semi-finishing and finishing applications at high feed rates. Its unique design provides a fully-effective cutter with two cutting edges, even for small depths of cut. The new BCR D.. inserts can withstand the strong forces resulting from high feed. They are produced with a protrusion on the bottom that mounts into a matching slot in the pocket. The ability to maintain the high precision of the cutting edge location results from this very firm clamping that relieves most of the stresses normally exerted on the clamping screw.

A variety of milling head configurations ball nose, square shoulder, chamfering and slitting cutter are known as MULtI-MASter. This system features ISCARs unique threaded carbide heads for superior performance, short indexing time (the tool remains clamped in the machine) and improved economy. Each cutting head has an advanced pressed shape with sharp ground cutting edges. MULtI-MASter combines steel shanks with indexable carbide milling heads for long life and repeatability in high speed machining.

The SUMoMILL tools T290... feature high durability and outstanding tool life due to the tangential orientation of the inserts in their pockets and higher tooth density. The T290 tools can run at higher table feeds, producing excellent surface finish and no mismatch.

HELI T490 uses tangentially clamped inserts with four right-hand helical cutting edges. The T490 milling inserts are available in 8, 13 and 16 mm cutting edge lengths. The T490 LN... inserts, due to their small sizes and tangential orientation in the pocket, enable tool design with larger core diameters than tools with regular, radially oriented inserts. The most advanced insert design and production tecnology result in a soft and clean cut due to insert helical cutting edges and positive rake angles.

MILLShreD is a family of milling cutters that can carry either round inserts with a serrated cutting edge or regular round inserts. When very deep cavities are machined, chip evacuation (even with air blow) is very problematic due to chip shape, weight and size. In deep cavities there is a tendency for long chips to become trapped and then they are prone to be re-cut. When using MILLShreD, small chips are produced, which have fewer tendencies to be re-cut. The insert has four indexing orientation options. The serrations on the inserts cutting edge were designed so they overlap, providing a fully-effective cutter configuration.

The HTP ...-R side plunger carries size 10, 16 tangentially clamped inserts on the frontal face of the tools. The new inserts are double-sided with 4 cutting edges. They were designed with a positive rake face for reduced cutting forces and excellent chip flow. The tools have coolant holes and they feature high durability. They are used mainly for plunging but can be used also for face milling up to 3 mm DOC, producing an outstanding surface finish.

A variety of milling head configurations - ball nose, square shoulder, chamfering and slitting cutter - are known as MULtI-MASter. This new system features ISCARs unique threaded carbide heads for superior performance, short indexing time (the tool remains clamped in the machine) and improved economy. Each cutting head has an advanced shape with sharp ground cutting edges.

ISCARs SoLIDMILL family of solid carbide endmills is for machining aluminum. The endmills are 3 flute, 45 helix, medium length and they are able to perform shouldering, slotting and drilling applications. These SoLIDMILL endmills feature very sharp cutting edges and an excellent surface finish, which are essential for cutting aluminum and for avoiding built-up edge. The 45 helix with the spacious chip gullets are large for very high stock removal, leaving an excellent surface finish.

GoLDALU tools have an improved pocket design and are TiN coated. This coating provides high surface hardness, which improves wear resistance and durability, prevents aluminum from adhering to the cutter and gives the tool an impressive appearance.

hM90 APCr 2206... hM90 APCr 1605...

heLIALU inserts have sharp helical cutting edges, polished rakes and a wide range of different corner radii. They are mounted on GoLDALU tools that are balanced for very high RPM machining. APCr r=0.2 to 6.4 mm Extremely high metal removal rates.

Whether standard or specially tailored, ISCARs tools are the best choice to produce special parts for the die and mold industry. These include turning and boring tools, drills and reamers, and various slot and face milling cutters.

TA N G E N T I A L L I N E

The heLItUrN holder with its tangentially clamped insert and unique helical shaped cutting edges enable the use of very large depths of cut and high feeds. The double-sided insert, with its narrow curved rake face, is clamped into the toolholder on a corresponding seat using a conical head screw. This design protects the toolholder from overload and insert damage.

SCAR,Where Innovation Never Stops!

A compact tool design for Swiss-type automatics and CNC lathes, providing reduced setup time and easy indexing without having to remove the toolholder from the machine. Clamping and releasing the insert can be accomplished from either side of the toolholder. The inserts are equipped with chip deflectors that were specially designed for machining small parts.

ISCAR features a variety of ISO standard inserts, with small shank sizes. Also available are many standard geometry inserts with precision ground cutting edges and small radii for manufacturing small and thin parts. Toolholders with a unique clamping device for solving the main problems related to insert clamping and replacement on Swiss-type machines.

The PENTACUT insert has 5 cutting edges, useful for multifunction applications including grooving, parting, recessing and chamfering. This cost-effective insert is designed to perform shallow grooving operations and parting of small solid bars up to 12.5 mm in diameter. Each cutting edge on the pentagonal shaped insert is equipped with a unique J-type positive chipformer that provides excellent chip control in grooving, parting and recessing (light side turning) applications. The insert is clamped by a side torx screw, which can be tightened or released from either side of the holder. This enables insert indexing (rotation) without having to remove the holder from the machine turret. PENTACUT tools can be mounted on any type of lathe.

Wind Turbine Components

Major Components Modern wind turbines employ four major component assemblies - the rotor, nacelle, tower, and balance of system. The rotor includes blades which are used to harness wind energy and convert it into mechanical energy and a hub to support the blades. In addition, most wind turbines have a pitch mechanism to rotate and change the angle of the blades, based on the wind speed and the desired rotating speed. The nacelle is the structure that contains, encloses and supports the components that convert mechanical energy into elecricity. These components include generators, gearboxes and control electronics. The tower supports the rotor and nacelle and raises them to a height where higher wind speeds maximize energy extraction. Modern utility-scale wind turbine towers are typically up to ~160 meters (~525) high, with blades that measure up to ~130 meters (~426) in diameter and rotor and nacelle assemblies weighing several hundred tons. Additional balance-of-station components at ground height are required to gather, control and transmit power to the grid interconnection. The diagram below provides a schematic view of a wind turbine and its major components. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

The majority of turbine designs feature a gearbox, although some manufacturers produce direct drive designs, which do not require one. The gearbox employs a planetary gear system to convert the low-speed high-torque rotation of the rotor into high-speed rotation at low torque for input to the generator. The gearbox drives a high speed shaft leading to the generator, typically at 1,500 revolutions per minute.

The vast majority of commercial wind turbines use tubular steel towers. In some circumstances lattice towers are used for smaller capacity turbines. Tower heights depend on rotor diameter and the wind speed conditions of the site. Tower heights range from 50 meters for a 1 MW turbine to as high as 125 meters and more for very large turbines. The flange comprises a large scale of rolled steel which connects the towers conical links.
