by JoAnn Derson Glassware will sparkle if you add a capful of bleach to the rinse water when handwashing dishes. When you take your pet to the sitter, measure out each meal into a plastic zipper-top bag. This way, the sitter doesnt have to remember how much to feed at each mealtime. Place individual fabric softener sheets into sneakers to keep them fresh between wearings. Baking savory bread? Try substituting vegetable broth for the water in your recipe. It adds a deeper element of flavor to the bread. Just use lowsodium broth, so you dont add too much salt to your bread. To bring out the natural sweetness of corn on the cob, try sprinkling a little bit of sugar in the pot after the water has come to a boil. You can remove berry stains from your fingers with lemon juice. Got berry juice on your tablecloth? Pour a generous amount of milk on the spot, let it soak for 15 minutes or more. Then soak in cold water with soap for an hour or more. Wash, rinse and dry. Soak raisins in cold water before chopping so that they wont stick to your knife. Use lined-up celery ribs to create a base for your roast. This way, the juices move around more and the roast never sticks to the pan. Keep a spray bottle of fullstrength white vinegar by your laundry area. Use it to spray the underarms of shirts that have deodorant stains on them.

By Mike Dooley When I go out on a design consultation I am often told I dont want gravel everywhere and I dont want grass. My response is, Then you want mulch? The answer is usually NO. I dont want mulch because it will blow away. Some of that is true, but gravel and grass have their own problems. If youve traveled to other parts of the country, youve noticed that the Southwest is alone in its negative attitude toward bark mulches. In the rest of the U.S., mulch is heralded as the answer to improve the soil, prevent weeds, hold in moisture and give the landscape a pleasant, organic look. After 30 years of installing mulches, here are my conclusions. Large bark nuggets will not blow away, but they look very coarse. (Theyre ugly.) Free city mulch is free but its extra ugly. Small bark nuggets look nice, but they can blow away. Shredded bark, especially cedar, will stay in place. The stringy nature of shredded mulch keeps it from blowing. It looks better than gravel, has lower maintenance than grass

and improves soil moisture. Finally, a word on heat retention. I laid a thermometer on my porch in the shade and the temperature was 84 degrees. Then I placed the thermometer on an area of mulch and the temperature was 98 degrees. Finally I put the thermometer on gravel and it couldnt give an accurate reading because it maxed out the thermometer at 125 degrees! Happy Gardening! By Samantha Mazzotta Small areas of stained or damaged carpet can be repaired yourself, without too much trouble. If you have some leftover scraps or sections from when the carpet was installed, you can replace that stained section with the exact same type of carpet, which usually creates the best match (as long as the rest of the carpet isnt too old, stained or faded, in which case you may want to consider replacing the entire carpet). If you dont have extra scraps, never fear take an unstained scrap of the carpet to a carpet specialty store to find the closest match. You may also need to replace the padding underneath the section, especially if the stain is a pet urine stain. If the stain is less than three inches in diameter, consider getting a carpet patch kit that includes a circular cutter. This will allow you to cut out the stain and then cut a patch that is exactly the same size and shape. If the stain is bigger, use a box cutter to trim the stained section plus an inch or two beyond the stain. A metal or wood ruler will help you make a straight cut. Cut away the padding in the section as well.

Take the padding and carpet section to the carpet store to match both the color and type of carpet, as well as the correct type and thickness of the padding. Back at home, measure and trim the new padding and carpet to fit the cut-out section as closely as possible. Tack the padding in place with either a bit of carpet glue and/or staples. Double-check the fit of the new patch, then spread carpet glue over the bottom of the patch, as well as a light bead under the edges of the carpet surrounding the hole. Carefully press the carpet patch into place. Making sure no glue is on your fingers, rough up the carpet pile to hide the edges of the patch. Allow the glue to dry for about half a day, then vacuum.

A nationwide survey of more than 5,000 veterinary hospitals was recently completed by the American Heartworm Society (AHS) to gauge the incidence of heartworm disease in the United States. The sad news: the survey documented heartworm in almost every county and parish in the country. If youre a pet owner, here are facts you should know about heartworm disease: 1. Blame the mosquito. Pets dont infect each other, they require a go-between: the mosquito. More than 20 species of mosquitoes are known to spread heartworm. And while mosquito repellents are a good idea, they dont take the place of monthly heartworm preventives. 2. Your pet cant escape the threat of heartworm disease. Heartworm incidence has been documented in all 50 states. Thats why the American Heartworm Society guidelines recommend that all U.S. pets be given heartworm preventive on a monthly basis, and dogs be tested annually for heartworm. 3. Cats get heartworm disease, too. Dogs are more susceptible than cats, but cats can become seriously ill from just a few worms. 4. Prevention beats the cure any day. Dogs with heartworm disease can and should be treated, but the cost is significant; treating a dog can cost more than $1,000 and dogs need careful monitoring and cage confinement for a month or more. Meanwhile, there is no effective medication for treating cats with heartworm disease. Only a veterinarian can ensure your pet is getting optimal protection from heartworm. By Tom Bruno Have you ever taken a Sunday and paid a visit to any of our local builders to look at the model homes, even if you were not in the market? If you have, did you say, Wow, this is nice, when you walked in? (Assuming the home was a decorated model.) If you did, think of that experience when it is your turn to sell. Suppose the builder took all the dcor down, and all you saw was plain walls and carpet, and the usual light and plumbing fixtures? Itd look pretty basic. So, when you decide to sell, and you want your home to POP above all the other homes in your area, Id suggest you get a stager. If you still live in the home, a staging expert can help you de-clutter and use what you have to help the home show better. If your home is vacant, stagers may even provide you with furnishings and decorator items to use. Consider this. If your home for sale is vacant, would you rather sell within 30 to 60 days by spending some money to make it look good, or would you rather keep making payments for months, while it doesnt sell? I have had sellers tell me that they are not about to remove anything, and that is their prerogative to show their home as it is. But, the question remains. Do you want prospective buyers to look at your home, or your stuff? Buyers may not even come by if the pictures on the Internet/MLS look cluttered. Remember, they need to visualize their belongings in your house. It is up to you. But, I can tell you from experience what my buyers say after we leave cluttered houses. Its not pretty. By Tony Rizzo Weve received mail from devoted All My Children fans who dont know how theyll manage without the long-running soap. Cheer up! Word is that the wonderful Carol Burnett, a devoted AMC fan herself who appeared as Verla Grubbs in 83, 95 and 2005, will be in several episodes in September. In 83, Carol made the TV m o v i e Between F r i e n d s Carol Burnett with Elizabeth Taylor, and they arranged their shooting schedule around their favorite soaps (Carols was AMC; Lizs was General Hospital), and they watched them together. Liz appeared in GH leading up to and including the marriage of Luke and Laura, which was the highest-rated show in daytime TV history. Debbie Reynolds recent auction at the Paley Center for Media grossed a record $26 million, and she is now preparing for round two of the three-part auction extravaganza. The new exhibit will feature costumes, posters and props from Gone With the Wind, Showboat, The Yearling and John Hustons Moulin Rouge, as well as costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Doris Day as centerpieces. The Paley Center had so many visitors come to see the opening round of the auction that officials put most of the items for the second auction on display on July 23 for the early-2012 auction, adding items as they go along so people will come back again and again. Word is that the first auction greatly exceeded Debbies expectations.

Lets talk about parapet repairs. Many companies are using a fiberglass mesh with a new color coat. This method doesnt last much more than five years. Typically within two to three years, this type of rebuild will begin to have problems with de-laminating. The next method used is a stucco netting 20-gauge wire (chicken wire) with a new base coat. Better than the fiberglass mesh system, however, this system is likely what you already have. Adding more wire with a new base doesnt fix the problem. Also, some companies are using synthetic stucco without the waterproof membrane applied prior to it. When moisture sits on your parapets, it seeps through the synthetic stucco and lodges in your existing color coat. Therefore, blistering and peeling occur, taking the existing color coats and base coats with it, usually within two to five years. The method I use is 1/8" thick diamond coned metal lath, to hold the new base coat, which is approximately 3/8" to 1/2" thick, creating a new moisture barrier. The new base coat stops the moisture. The color coat lasts longer because it bonds best to a base coat on flat surfaces better than color to color. We rebuild all parapets, take care of all deteriorated areas, then re-color coat the entire home. Our parapet rebuilding system has a minimum of 95 percent success rate over an 11- to 14-year period. in front of you with the shells on the bottom. Set an 8- to 10-inch piece of driftwood, a small branch or a dowel across the top. Tie the loose ends of the lines around the driftwood and knot, making sure that when the shells dangle, they will touch each other when a gentle breeze blows. Or, intersperse several more shells on the length of fishing line or twine. Knot each one evenly in place and end with the final shell dangling. Remove from the shell to reveal the beautiful natural pattern. Add more paint to the shell for more prints. Or, paint additional shells in various sizes using contrasting colors to make a pleasing design.

By Jon Knudsen I hope Jemez Springs is high on your list of must-see places this year. Despite the tremendous acreage lost to fires in these mountains, Jemez Springs, as well as Jemez Pueblo, escaped fire damage. However, economic damage continues. The Monument consists of the remains of Guisewa, an ancestral village of the present day Jemez Pueblo which is located in Walatowa, 12 miles south. 50s and 60s. I suspect that the watch you have is one of Debrots designs. I also think it is what was marketed as a Cocktail Watch, which featured a kaleidoscope dial. That particular dial featured five different patterns, namely flower, sun, arrows, star and wheel. The Cocktail was launched in 1953 and soon became one of the most popular designs marketed by the Ernest Borel company. As with most collections, the value of a vintage watch depends on three major factors: rarity, condition and desirability. I contacted several dealers who specialize in vintage watches, and they seem to agree that your watch would retail in the $150 to $350 range. Q: I have a set of four 78rpm records of General Douglas MacArthurs Farewell Address to Congress in April 1951. Would these be considered collectible? By Curtis Smith Many New Mexico gardeners are reporting troubles with their tomatoes, chiles, cucumbers and melons this year. The problems range from small fruit to no fruit on the plants. There are many factors that may be contributing to the problems, but the most likely culprits are the high temperatures, low moisture and soil mineral problems. For tomatoes and chiles, the primary problem seems to be a combined effect of the factors mentioned above. Low water, coupled with high heat and, often, high mineral salt content has caused stunted plants and reduced fruit size. The cold weather slowed tomato plant development, and then the heat prevented proper development of the size of the fruit. Fruit size development results from water filling the cells that form the fruit. Heat and drought prevent adequate water from reaching the fruit, even when the plants are well irrigated. Protection from drying winds and some shade during the heat of the day can help retain water in the plants and allow better fruit development. Salts in the soil, water and amendments added to improve the soil compound the problem. Many people having problems mention adding manure or compost to the garden. In the presence of adequate rainfall, this is good. However, when water is inadequate to leach mineral salts

Cucumbers and melons first produce staminate (male) flowers that only produce pollen. The female (pistillate) flowers are produced later. High temperatures and low moisture conditions can delay the formation of the female flowers. The heat will also interfere with proper pollination of tomatoes and other vegetables, so even though they flower, the flowers will fall away due to failure of the pollen to function properly, or due to the fact that the heat killed the pollen.
