Mugen Ryu Classes Are Available at NOX Martial Arts Clubs.

Shimada Sensei is well versed in the many skills that make up the Samurai cache of martial arts. These include expert knowledge of such weapons as the Naginata, Eku, Yari, and of course the Katana (sword). Unarmed combat strategies like ju-jitsu and ninjitsu complete the Samurai Bugei (military arts). As if mastering these are not enough, Samurai Shimada holds several black belts in various Karate styles. These include Meibukan Gojyu-Ryu, International Karate GojuRyu Association, and Kyokushin Karate. He also has extended his traditional weaponry knowledge to include the Motobu-Ryu system of Kobudo from Okinawa like nunchaku, kama, sai, and bo. He brings his culmination of knowledge and experiences to his family system called Mugen-Ryu, the Way of Infinity. As the succession of Mugen-Ryus leadership passes through the generations, Shimada Shihan finds himself holding the torch today as the 18th in line. You can meet and train with him in Markham, Ontario at the NOX Dojo. Ryukyu Kobudo (Motobu Ryu): Friday Nights 6:00 - 7:15pm ($300/12 classes) Ryukyu or Okinawa ai it is known today, is the homeland of Karate and Kobudo. Motobu Ryu is a system of ancient Okinawan weaponry dating back to the time when Shuri royalty reigned ober the island. Traditional Okinawan weaponry are actually farming implements adapted for self-defense. Practitioners learn to use Sai, Tonfa, Kama, and Bo in the traditional manner. Shimada Sensei holds a 4th degree black belt in Motobu Ryu and is currently working towards his 5th on his next visit to Okinawa. Diligent practitioners may become certified in Okinawa, Japan. Jujitsu/Judo: Friday Nights 7:15 - 8:30pm ($175/12 classes) Judo and its predecessor Jujitsu are considered gentle arts. They include methods of throwing and submission and is the foundation of today's mixed martial arts. An expert in both arts, Shimada Sensei combines them in a practical and enjoyable class. This introductory program is meant to be both educational and good exercise. Participants will learn how to fall safely, throw effectively, and how to apply submissions. SAMURAI SUNDAY Family Kickboxing: Sundays 10:00 - 11:00am ($180/12 classes) Interactive and fun, family kickboxing is a great way for families to learn kickboxing safely and work out together. Participants burn calories, learn evasive footwork, and create explosive power. Learn how shadowbox, use focus mitts, and how to spar at home safely as a family. Family Kenjitsu: Sundays 11:00 - 12:00am ($180/12 classes) Kenjitsu (Bokto): Sundays 12:00 - 1:15pm ($300/12 classes), Iaito: Saturday 1:00 2:15pm Kenjitsu is the art of mastering the Samurai arsenal of weapons that primarily consist of sword expertise but also includes the use of spear (yari) and glaive (naginata). In mastering the sword (Katana), one will practice wielding a wooden sword (bokto) and practice the art of drawing a real sword (iaito) - practised on Saturdays. Practice pace is exacting and precise making a perfect avenue for the mature and sophisticated warrior. Advanced practitioners are eligible for testing at the Isshinkan Dojo in Saitama, Japan. Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy Art): Sundays 2:00 - 4:00pm ($180/12 classes) "The brush and sword are in accord." This old Japanese proverb indicates how important Japanese calligraphy is to the Samurai. Known for its aesthetic beauty, Shodo art has become popular in western cultures. Shimada Sensei holds a master degree in 2 schools of Shodo. Not only is his technically beautiful, his ability to teach this precise art is top class. With enough practice, students can qualify for certification under the Nanryu Shodo School in Japan. Conversational Japanese: Sundays 4:00 - 5:15pm ($100/12 classes) Hello, good morning. Nice to meet you. Where is a good sushi restaurant? Impress your friends and relatives when you converse in easy Japanese. Conversational Japanese with Shimada Sensei not only opens up a new door into the Japanese culture, his knowledge of Samurai history is a FREE bonus for the avid martial artist to learn and communicate effectively.
