Smart Travelling Around the World: Tips for Avoiding Mishaps

Everyone knows that travelling around the world is an inspiring experience
broadening a human mind but the road does not tell the traveler what lies ahead
because there are many hazards threatening to ruin your journey or trip. Smart
travelers will always take the time to assess and reduce all the risks. Fortunately,
there are key tips on how to avoid mishaps and misfortunes to stay safe and secure.
So, if you want to be a smart traveler, read on!

Sort Your Paperwork Properly

First of all, you should sort any relevant papers before you even pack your
suitcases and backpacks. Preparation for your trip or journey involves checking
that your foreign passport is valid. If you are going to travel for the first time, get
in touch with the tourist agents to arrange and ensure the right visa documents.
Make copies of all your travel tickets and keep them in waterproof bags, and
ensure to retain all the necessary insurance papers that you need in the case of
accidents during your trip or journey.

Always Have a Plan in Advance

All experienced travelers say that planning key points of your travel in advance is
necessary for your safety and the security of the nearest and dearest. So, you
should arrange trustworthy transport and find comfortable but necessarily
expensive accommodation to avoid facing the danger when getting to your
destination. Both women and men should keep in mind that ordering reliable taxi
service online is safer than hitchhiking a random car on an unknown road in an
unknown place. Thus, take your time to choose which places and sights you're
going to visit, and share your ideas with a family member or friends who can track
your movements.

Socialize Carefully
Good planning ensures safe socializing, so do not put your life and security at risk,
especially when heading for a bar or nightclub where there is the risk of temptation
to indulge in hard drinks and cocktails or even drugs. It is a really good idea to
have someone responsible who has a cool head but a warm heart among your
friends. If you are traveling alone, it is best not to visit the above-mentioned
locations as you can easily fall victim to an awkward situation. Always observe the
bartender in hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, and other public places pouring your
beverage directly from the bottle they use for other customers. When you are on
the dancefloor, avoid leaving your beverage unattended because this will make it
impossible for anyone to slip something in without you noticing. Get acquainted
with new people in crowded locations and never get in a car with anyone you've
just met for the first time.

When you travel abroad, you should know local customs, traditions, and basic
phrases in a local language. If you know local language and traditions, it will make
you closer to the folk and can help you avoid some dangers and awkward
situations.

The countries you visit, the customs you find

All smart and experienced travellers know and follow customs and traditions
around the world. Like language, cultural traditions identify countries’ and nations’
heritages. Thus, when travelling around the world, you should not consider that
what is found to be sensible and polite in your country can be perceived similarly
in another. Not to be considered impolite or rude when you’re visiting another
country, read the list of some unique cultural traditions and customs around the
world.
1.     Choose the flowers you will present to Russian friends
When you are in Russia, be careful of the flowers you give to women colleagues
and friends. Avoid giving yellow flowers as they represent a split-up of a
relationship, betrayal or deceit. Red carnations are usually given to veterans who
survived the war and put on the graves of those who have left this earth. Think
twice when you choose a bouquet for your Russian friends or colleagues.
2.     Gift-giving for Chinese friends
Despite globalization, the cultural traditions of the Chinese have not been erased
because their cultural customs were developed for millennia and handed down
from generation to generation. You should remember that the vast majority of the
Chinese are superstitious and avoid giving white flowers to your Chinese friends
because they symbolize ghosts and death. However, in many European countries,
white flowers are associated with innocence and purity and they are given to young
girls at weddings. You should also avoid flowers with thorny stems.
Other things that are not acceptable as gifts for the Chinese include:
 Clock or watch. Its name in Chinese is associated with a funeral procession
because it means that time is running out, or life and relationships can come to an
end.
 Handkerchief. In Chinese, it sounds similarly to a farewell greeting.
 Umbrella. Presenting your Chinese friend with an umbrella is thought to be a
subtle hint of ending a relationship.
 Presents that come in sets of four. The number 4 is connected with death.
 Straw sandals, shoes. It also means that you want to go your separate ways.
 Green hat. It means that the wife is unfaithful.
3.     Don’t ask for salt when having dinner in Egypt
In many European countries, it is acceptable to ask for salt to add to your food.
However, if you are having dinner with friends in Egypt, avoid asking for salt. It
will be perceived as an insult to the host, as Egyptians may think that you are not
satisfied with the taste of the meal you are eating now.
4.     A question of being punctual
The attitude to time perception differs in various countries. In Venezuela, it is
acceptable to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes late for a dinner party or meeting.
Being early for the Venezuelans denotes that the person is either eager or
greedy. Americans are stricter if it comes to punctuality, just like the Germans,
South Koreans, and the Japanese. It’s astonishing how being five minutes late
(which can actually extend to 60 minutes) in Malaysia is found to be suitable,
and you do not have to apologize, too. It is not necessary to on time in Morocco –
you are allowed to be late for an hour or an entire day! At the same time, Mexicans
and Greeks will not worry you if you arrive 30 minutes after the appointed time.
5.     Study etiquette in Norway and other Scandinavian countries
In some cultures, it is appropriate to eat food with your hands. But it is not true for
Scandinavian countries, as you are often required to brush up on how to eat with a
knife and fork. In these countries, even sandwiches are eaten using a fork and a
knife.
6.    Taboo to sharp objects
The cultural traditions of the Netherlands and China are very different. But in one
aspect, they are very similar and connected with receiving gifts that are pointed
and sharp, such as scissors and knives. It is a bad idea to give pointed and sharp
objects to your friends in the Netherlands and in China. For the Dutch, scissors and
knives are believed to be unlucky gifts, while for the Chinese they mean you want
to cut ties with them and drift apart.
7.     Losing a tooth in Greece
In many countries, children are told to keep their baby teeth under their pillows and
the Tooth Fairy will exchange money for their teeth. But Greek children are
advised to toss their teeth onto the roofs of their homes because it is believed to get
a healthy tooth as well as good luck to their families.
8.     Saying Cheers but Not Clinking Glasses in Hungary
Meanwhile, in many European countries people usually say “cheers” to each other
and clink their glasses during different events including birthdays, weddings, New
Year parties, entertainments, this tradition is not followed in Hungary. There is a
historic explanation for this: in the nineteenth century, the Hungarian troops were
severely defeated during their war with Austria, and the Hungarian soldiers
witnessed Austrian generals celebrating the victory by drinking beer and clinking
their glasses. Hungarians swore not to clink their glasses when having a drink for
150 years. This oath ended in 1999, but the Hungarians went on following this
custom.
9.     Never go Dutch in Turkey
Nowadays, in many European cultures, due to feminization, it is acceptable to split
the bill in the café or restaurant, but this is not appropriate when you are in Turkey.
Insisting on splitting the bill is considered to be mannerless when you are having
lunch or dinner with your Turkish friends or partners in Istanbul, Izmir, Marmaris.
It is better for you to reciprocate by inviting your friends to a follow-up meal some
days later. So, in this way you can treat them in another beautiful Turkish spot in
return.
10.      No red ink for writing in South Korea
Colours can be a very important point for some cultures. It is true not only about
colours of bouquets, but also for inks used for writing. For example, for many
European people, it does not matter what ink color you use to write their names
with, if their names are spelled correctly but for South Koreans you can use any
colour except red, as for them red ink symbolizes death.
11.     A symbol of successful business in Finland
For many people, going to the sauna is an intimate ritual and is always considered
both a healthy way to relieve stress or relax and socialize. The Finns think the
same way, but if your business customer or counterpart from Helsinki or
Lahti invites you to the sauna after your meeting, do not be alarmed. This just
means that your business meeting was successful and productive.
