Donna's Day:

Creative Family Fun

by Donna Erickson

by samantha weaver
It was noted psychiatrist and sleep researcher William C. Dement who made the following sage observation: Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives. For reasons that arent entirely clear in the record at hand, its illegal to wear a hat while dancing in Fargo, N.D. Despite the fact that the English language is very large in terms of the number of words available to those who can use them, it seems that much of our writing is made up of only a few words. In a study once conducted by lexicographer G.H. McKnight, it was found that approximately one-quarter of all the words in any given sample of writing in English is one of the following nine: and, be, have, it, of, the, to, will and you. Some species of squid can swim up to 35 mph. If youre an avid hiker, you might want to keep in mind that the most dangerous trail in America, according to Backpacker magazine, is located in Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The trail known as The Maze earned this distinction thanks to numerous dead-end canyons, few sources of water and temperatures that soar to over 100 degrees F. in summer. If youre like me, youre a turophile: a lover of cheese. When the eggs of the Darwin frog hatch and the tadpoles emerge, the babies are swallowed by a male frog. Theyre not victims of cannibalism, however; the father keeps the tadpoles in his vocal sac for two months. Once theyve matured and become tiny frogs, the young ones are coughed up and have to fend for themselves. Thought for the Day: Its not a good idea to put your wife into a novel; not your latest wife, anyway. Norman Mailer

Sand-Castle Making Is Fun for All Ages

Life IS a beach for sandguy and grandfather Kirk Rademaker. As an internationally acclaimed sand sculptor, he is known for his innovative designs created with sand and water on exotic beaches of the world. In 1997, he quit his career in carpentry, traded in his construction boots for bare feet, and began a fulltime career enjoying the enchantment of sand, surf and art. A beach filled with people is an equalizer in a society that divides people, he says. When beachgoers of all ages and stations of life spontaneously join together to create a sandcastle, no one cares about your title, name, rank or lack thereof. On vacation in Santa Cruz, Calif., I experienced the freedom he talks about as I poked around in wet sand to my hearts content, sharing the moment with the newfound friends around me. I discovered that castle-making isnt just for kids with pint-size pails and scoops. All ages can reawaken their inner artist and experience joy. As Kirk guided a seaside crowd of eager onlookers and myself through the basics of sandcastle and sand sculpting, he demonstrated his basic and doable techniques for getting started. (For step-by-step photos, see the Sandguy Kirk Rademaker Sand Sculptures photo album at my DONNAS DAY Facebook fan page.) When you head to a sandy beach at a lake or the ocean, bring along the following along items, then let nature provide the rest.

outside of the bucket; the vibrations cause the wet sand to settle and harden. Repeat with more sand and water until the bucket is full and the sand feels very firm. 3. Tap the sides of the bucket again and gently lift it upward to reveal a large silolike sand shape. Now you have the basic building block for your castle, Mount Rushmore-esque sculpture or wacky design. When you get going, just let it expand with your imagination. The goal, according to Kirk, is that you dont want the sand shape to look like a five-gallon bucket any longer. source: www.sandguy.com. donna ericksons award-winning series donnas day is airing on public television nationwide. to find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com and link to the new donnas day facebook fan page. her latest book is donna ericksons fabulous funstuff for families.

3 five-gallon plastic buckets (available at hardware and building supply stores). Remove the base of one bucket so it looks like a wide tube. Shovel for sand and water mixture. Your favorite sand-sculpting tools, such as a small trowel, butter knives, spoons and scoops.

heres the fun:

1. Fill one of the buckets with sea or lake water and bring it to the construction site. 2. Set the bucket with base removed firmly into the sand upside down. Fill it about two-thirds full with sand, then add water to the top. Vigorously mix with your hands. Tap the

The Kitchen Diva

by Angela Shelf Medearis Cool Drinks for Hot Days
Baby, its hot outside! The recent heat wave has increased the need to replenish your body and avoid heat exhaustion. Sweating is the bodys way of naturally cooling itself. Keep in mind that your body is actually losing fluids as you sweat, so it is important to replace them. Water makes up about 60 percent of your bodys weight and is an important part of many body processes. Besides helping to regulate body temperature, water is present in every cell in the body and helps protect some body tissues. Water also helps to transport nutrients and aides with the elimination of bodily waste. By the time you become thirsty, you may have already lost 2 percent of your body fluids. Mild dehydration is when you have lost 2 percent to 5 percent of your body fluids. Symptoms of mild dehydration include thirst, dry mouth and throat, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, weakness or a lack of energy, and reduced quantity of urine. When there is a fluid loss of more than 5 percent, the body has severe reactions that include pale skin; bluish fingertips and lips; rapid, shallow breathing; weak, irregular pulse; and confusion or disorientation. It can result in shock, seizures, coma and death. A person who burns about 2,000 calories should get about 8 to 12 cups of fluid per day. (Most women burn less than 2,000 calories, while men working outside would burn more.) That might sound like a lot to drink, but it doesnt all have to come from drinking water. Many of the foods we eat contain a high percentage of water, and that counts as a portion of the 8 to 12 cups of needed fluid. Hydrating foods such as celery, cucumber, lettuce and summer squash are 90 percent to 95 percent water. Grapefruit, strawberries, broccoli and tomato are 90 percent to 94 percent water, and milk, yogurt, egg whites, fruit juices, apples and carrots are 80 percent to 89 percent wa-

FRUITY SPORTS DRINk Using natural fruit juices adds both natural sugars and vitamins to your sports drink. Adding sea salt instead of table salt adds an electrolyte source, as the minerals of the sea are very similar to the electrolyte composition in our blood. Sea salt contains 84 minerals, including sodium, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and helps to replenish the minerals you lose through perspiration. 1/2 can (3 ounces) frozen, unsweetened orange juice 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice 3/4 teaspoon sea salt 2 quarts water Using a large pitcher, mix all of the ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate and stir to recombine before serving. Makes 2 quarts. hOMEMADE POWDERED SPORTS DRINk 9 tablespoons organic or raw sugar 3/8 teaspoon sea salt 1 packet unsweetened powdered fruit-drink mix Mix together the sugar, salt and powdered fruit drink until well-combined. Place 1/3 of the mixture into each of three small resealable bags. To reconstitute, add the contents of 1 bag to a 20-ounce sports bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with water, close and shake to mix. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake to mix again. Alternately, add half the powdered drink to a 20-ounce bottle of water. Replace cap and shake to mix. Add the rest of the powdered drink, replace cap, and shake to mix. Makes 3 servings.

ter. Keep slices of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and other such water-packed fruits in the refrigerator. They are excellent sources of water, sugar and electrolytes, and the perfect grab and go refresher on a hot summers day. Keep in mind that the thirst mechanism can become weak in senior citizens, so they may need to implement a way of assuring they drink enough water. Some people fill a pitcher with six or so cups of water in the morning and make sure that they drink the entire contents by the time they go to bed. At the other end of the life span are children, who often ignore thirst cues. It is important to assure they are drinking enough fluids, especially if theyre playing outdoors. A good gauge of hydration is the color of their urine. A dark-yellow color is an indicator they are not drinking enough fluids. Just remember that if the weather is hot and youre sweating, that precious fluid needs to be replaced. Next time you venture out into the heat, dont forget to pack a bottle full of this Fruity Sports Drink, or take along a package of the Homemade Powdered Sports Drink to add to your bottle of water!

chalk portrait signed by Princess Eugenia E. de Kactwra, dated Aug. 10, 1966, New Orleans. We have it stored in a safety deposit box and would like to know more about the artist, since I have some people wanting to purchase the picture Charles, Port Orange, Fla. A: This answer is a little involved, so stay with me. During the 1960s, I was a flower child and lived in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Jackson Square was a perfect gathering place for dozens of interesting characters, including Janie the Duck Girl (who was followed by a pet duck everywhere she went), Heavenly Hilda (an overthe-hill street singer I always suspected was a man), Billy Blotto (a two-fisted drinker always in an alcoholic stupor) and last but not least the Polish Princess, a bird-like woman who could be found most afternoons on the Square doing chalk portraits for tourists. I suspect the picture you have is by this artist and might not be as valuable as you think. To find out for certain, I suggest you contact the Art Dealers Association of America, 575 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10022. Donna Carlson is the groups director, and she might be able to recommend a member who can help you. This wont necessarily be a free service, but I think it is always a good idea to get a professional opinion when in doubt about a collectible. My big question is, whatever happened to Janie the Duck Girl? Q: I have a small childs ring that I think probably came from a cereal box. It is plastic, silver in color, and has a design that features an image of the boxer, Gene Tunney. Does it have any value? Roger, Peoria, Ill.

SOUTH DAKOTA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH NEWS RELEASE:

Know Your Pets Safe Area

DEAR READERS: I recently received a report from the University of Missouri about a dog named Sugar, a Cocker Spaniel who was badly injured in the tornado that ravaged Joplin, Mo. When her owners grabbed her and ran for the safety of their basement shelter, Sugar, sensing the increased fear of her owners, became panicky and bolted back upstairs to her own safe area, a spot under one of the beds. With the tornado almost atop their house, the owners could not leave the shelter to retrieve her. Sugar survived the tornado, although she was badly injured and had lost use of her hind legs. Veterinarians at the University of Missouri performed emergency surgery to correct the injury to her spine. After many days of physical rehabilitation and therapy, Sugar is recovering with her owners. In addition to this encouraging story of recovery, what caught my interest was that Sugars owners knew exactly where she preferred to hide when something scary was happening. This doesnt seem like much, but knowing your pets favorite hiding places can be a lifesaving advantage in an emergency. With Sugar, unfortunately, this was not the case, as she was found several blocks away. There was nothing more her owners could do without putting themselves in mortal danger (something else that is important to keep in mind in an emergency). But in a less extreme emergency, when theres time to gather the family and pets, or when your pet is having a health emergency, youll be able to find your pet faster, or direct emergency personnel to where your pet normally hides, if you know where that hiding place is.
Send your question or comment to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.

SD Department of Health Recognizes World Breastfeeding Week

PIERRE, S.D. From August 1st through August 7th, South Dakota will join the rest of the nation and more than 120 countries around the globe in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week. The annual event commemorates the Innocenti Declaration made by WHO and UNICEF policy-makers in August 1990 to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. This years theme established by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy is: TALK TO ME! BREASTFEEDING A 3D EXPERIENCE. The focus is on the importance of connection between mother and baby (2-dimensions) as well as the third dimension of support from the health care provider, friend, family member, or citizen. The most recent CDC data indicates that 76.9% of mothers initiate breastfeeding in South Dakota. And while these numbers are fairly encouraging, the percentages of women who continue breastfeeding at 6 and 12 months, as well as rates of exclusive breastfeeding, remain low and stagnant. What these numbers tell us is that most mothers want to breastfeed but continue to face multiple barriers and do not receive the support that they need to be successful. Communication at every level is essential to provide this needed support. The South Dakota Department of Health Women, Infants, and Childrens (WIC) program recognizes this years theme as an important opportunity to encourage the sharing of knowledge and experience across generations, genders, sectors, and cultures to provide a wide network of support for breastfeeding mothers. We live in a world where individuals and global communities connect across small and great distances, with new lines of communication being created daily. We need to take advantage of every available information channel to broaden our horizons and spread important breastfeeding messages beyond our immediate time and place. In acknowledgement of the importance of breastfeeding as a public health issue, Governor Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed August 1-7 World Breastfeeding Week in South Dakota. if you would like to learn more about breastfeeding, contact the Clay County Community health services office at 677-6767. the south dakota department of health also offers educational materials on breastfeeding on its web site, www.bestfeeding.org.

Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Grilled Pineapple

When choosing a pineapple, pick one that is slightly soft with a deep, sweet fragrance. Pineapples are harvested ripe and will not get any sweeter with time. 1/4 cup hoisin sauce 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon grated fresh peeled ginger 1 teaspoon Asian sesame oil 1 whole (1 1/4 pounds) pork tenderloin 1/2 medium pineapple, untrimmed 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. In small bowl, combine hoisin, honey, ginger and oil. 2. Place pork on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook pork 18 to 20 minutes, turning occasionally. 3. With serrated knife, cut pineapple half into 4 wedges. Rub cut sides of pineapple with brown sugar. 4. blood pressure also drops the flow of blood to the brain That can trigger seizures. The explanation for this is a surge in the bodys stress chemicals that affect heart function. Damage to the heart muscle isnt permanent. The heart returns to good health in a matter of weeks. You didnt mention any prior stress. Do you recollect any? On the plus side, your heart arteries are in good shape, and you ought not to suffer a recurrence. The booklet on congestive heart failure does not address broken-heart syndrome specifically, but it does detail a more common condition, its treatment and its prognosis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipients printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have weak kidneys due to type 1 diabetes. My doctor has me eating three fruits a day and four vegetables. He limited my meat to 6 ounces daily. Does this limitation of meat benefit my kidneys? E.L. ANSWER: Many times, when the kidneys arent working up to par (weak kidneys), doctors put their patients on a reduced-protein diet. It slows the decline of kidney function. Thats why your doctor limited your meat (protein) intake. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is distilled water bad for drinking? Can you chew too much gum? My husband chews about four pieces every day. P.M. ANSWER: Distilling water involves boiling water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components

You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways. If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much. Broken Heart Not Just Figure of Speech

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Last December, my husband called the paramedics when I did not respond to him. They rushed me to the hospital when I began convulsing. I have no recollection of any of this. When I woke one week later, I was in the ICU. I was told that I had broken-heart syndrome. I also was told it has to do with blood pressure. Can you confirm that there is such a thing? A. ANSWER: Broken-heart syndrome is for real. Its a recent addition to the catalog of illnesses. Japanese doctors first described it, and called it Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a heart illness that affects the heart muscle, not the heart arteries or heart valves. The classical case is one where a person develops severe chest discomfort preceded by physical or emotional stress. The emotional stress could be the unexpected death of a loved one. An EKG shows a pattern that replicates the pattern of a heart attack. The hearts function is greatly compromised. It doesnt pump blood like it should, and that can lower blood pressure. Seizures are not included in the list of symptoms. However, a drop in

or volunteer corn in the soybean fields. We chopped them out. By hand. Everybody did back then. It was hot, sticky work, even in the early morning before the dew dried up. Wading waist-high through the scratchy leaves was bad enough. Hacking away at a stubborn stand of milkweed was another. They werent as tough as cockleburrs, though. At least milkweed didnt bite back! The best part about walking beans was going back to Grandmas house for lunch. She always had Fizzies for us kids. And I think it was more fun to make them than quench our thirst with them. Just plop the tablets into Grandmas colored tin glasses and voila! Pink, purple or orange effervescence exploded before our very eyes! Kool-aid didnt stand a chance! The flavors of summer also included finger-staining, tongue-bluing mulberries, fresh off the tree. Sugar-snap peas right out of the garden were a great snack, too. As long as I didnt have to pick and shuck enough for supper! And when I discovered how sweet and crunchy infant field corn was, that was a true revelation! Whod have thunk that you could eat the cob, too! Summer. Cicadas singing. Mourning doves cooing. Humidity so heavy it hangs in the air like a curtain. Distant thunder of an impending storm. Walking barefoot. Catching fireflies. Running through the sprinkler. Summer.

Jurassic Park 4 is going to made. But so far, no movie. Will it ever happen? Paul G., Miami A: All signs point to yes. Producer/director Steven Spielberg told a crowd of enthusiastic sci-fi fans at last months San Diego Comic-Con fan convention that there will be another Jurassic Park, and it might be only two to three years away. Steven said that he has a story and a screenwriter ready to go for the fourth movie of the dinosaur-clone series, and Steven himself will serve as producer. Q: I really love MTVs new teen comedy, Awkward. The actor who plays Matty looks really familiar. Can you tell me what else I might have seen him in recently? -- Cara D., via e-mail A: Beau Mirchoff, 21, plays Matty, the nice-guy jock with a heart and it appears he also has a thing for our heroine, Jenna. You might remember Beau from Heartland, or from his turn as Drea de Matteos son on Desperate Housewives. Of his year on DH, Beau told me: I learned so much from all the people on that set. They are pros, and they know what theyre doing. I learned a lot from Jeffrey Nordling, who played my father, and Drea de Matteo, who was my mother. I had a big crush on Drea. I hope it didnt read on camera. That would have been creepy. Playing a teen on Awkward has Beau remembering his own awkward time in high school: Everything seems like such a dire situation. Like its the last time youll be able to do something. Or its the end of the world if you cant go out with that girl. But its really not, and its so insignificant looking back. But youre growing up and youre figuring things out. Q: I was so sad to hear about the passing of singer Amy Winehouse. Do authorities know what caused her death? Grant D., via e-mail A: Toxicology reports will probably take weeks to get back, so it might be a while before we know what killed the troubled songstress, who was only 27 when she passed away on July 23. Amy had publicly battled addiction, but police say there were no signs of drug or paraphernalia in her home at the time of her death.

YO U D ON' T SAY

Charles J. Brady once said The real measure of a days heat is the length of a sleeping cat. Wally, my cat, is really long in these dog days of summer. But he doesnt know how lucky he is surrounded by the fresh breeze of air conditioning. I grew up without that cooling luxury. It was hot, to be sure, but I didnt know any different, so I got along just fine. I fell asleep to the whirring of a big old box fan stuck in the window to suck in any cool night air that might be around after sunset. But if humidity was all that it stirred up, the fan went on the dresser with the window shut tight. I spent a lot more time outside back then than I do now. It was probably just as hot in the house as it was under the shade of the giant cottonwood tree that held my tire swing, so I swung a lot. To cool off I just dangled my feet in the stock tank on the edge of the cattle yard. The slimy green moss on the bottom gooshed between my toes, which was kind of fun. If you like that sort of thing. When Mom and Dad gave me a horse for my 13th birthday, I rode to Mission Hill to cool off in the artesian pond there. Cindy grazed on shore while I took a dip (not the skinny kind) in the clear, chilly water. But that was only during the early summer weeks. The water took on a rusty hue and seemed to thicken up as the season progressed. Thats when wed go to the Memorial Park pool in Yankton. I dont remember the swimming so much as I do enjoying the sticky sweetness of cinnamon Jolly Rancher Fire Stix candy and banana flavored taffy from the concession stand. Each for only a nickel. But cooling off wasnt always the priority back then. Mowing was. Thats what summer meant at the farm. And we had a big yard. Mom did it the majority of the time, but Jan and I were called into service, too. (Dad was lucky he had books to write!) That was the only tractor I learned how to drive an International Harvester Farmall Cub bright red with a belly mower attached. I may have whined a bit when it was my turn to man the mower, but it really was kind of fun. Power steering would have been a nice touch, though! Walking beans was not fun. We never sprayed the weeds

Fixing a Slamming Door

Q: My front door swings open and shut way too quickly. This means when my son pushes the door open, it bangs against the doorstop on the wall so hard Im afraid it will crack the drywall behind it. And when he swings it shut, it slams. How can I fix this (besides teaching my son to be more conscientious about how he enters the house)? Ellen D., Philadelphia A: There are a couple of things you can try. To slow down the swinging, remove the pin from the top hinge of the door. Your son can be your helper by holding the door in place while you stand on a safe stepladder to take out the pin. Wrap the pin in clear tape just one thin layer. Reinsert into the top hinge, and test the door. If this doesnt slow down the swing, wrap one more layer around the pin. This should create enough friction to stop the superfast, free swing. You may need to reapply tape after several months, however. If the door banging shut is too loud, try using foam weather stripping to cushion the frame. Adhesive-backed foam stripping is available at home improvement stores in different widths. Try the thinnest width available. Pre-test the stripping before gluing it down. With the paper backing still on, unroll the strip along the inside of the door frame where the door closes against it. Put a little clear tape at the top and bottom to hold it, and test the door. Does it shut easily, or do you have difficulty getting it to latch with the strip in place? If its difficult, and you have the thinnest weather stripping available, try placing a small half-inch long piece at the top and bottom of the door frame and test the door again. This small amount of stripping should muffle the noise somewhat. HOME TIP: Does your door stick or lightly scrape the floor when you open it? Tape a piece of sandpaper to the

Last month I asked you to mark your calendar for October 23 so that you would be sure not to miss Gordy Pratts appearance at the Museum. This month, put a bigger mark on that date. A performance by Gordy Pratt is really very special. We have had so many great musicians perform at the Museum and it always amazes me that we dont pack the house John and Susan McNeill have played at our banquets, fundraisers, and just to entertain for several years. Bruce Grays group, The Good People, have performed for us several times. I know museums are often thought of as stuffy places and folks wonder why anyone would bother to care if a museum is there or not. Vermillion and South Dakota are extremely fortunate that the Friends of the W. H. Over Museum care and care deeply about the very existence of the Over. The W. H. Over Museum is named for an individual who was quite ordinary and worked hard to establish a great museum. I think that he did establish a museum that reflects our South Dakota people and values. In this building you can see the states history, folklore, ethnic heritage and wonderful, wonderful items which make us the unique state that we are today. One can see names that adorn buildings on the campus or who are prominent in our state and towns history. We have everything from the crudest tools imaginable to the most beautiful household items to be seen. We have historic items that hold special places in our towns history, such as the bell that is displayed in the foyer. Our one-room school replica fascinates our young visitors. There is a bell in that display that they can ring. Our museum honors those who have gone before by displaying items used in the pioneers daily lives. The Over Museum is a special place; we are supported by donations and lots of volunteer help. You are invited to join us by becoming a member of the Friends of the W. H. Over Museum. As usual, I invite you to come on over to the Over coffee is on, gift shop is open, and wed love to have you visit us at our I mean YOUR museum! See you, too, at the rest area for pancakes.

her in her ongoing campaign to win back her familys throne. But even armed with three powerful dragons and a host of warriors, the young rebel queen is having trouble holding on to the lands shes already conquered, as foes emerge from all sides, and even within her ranks. Back in Westeros, Nights Watch commander Jon Snow does his best to strengthen the mighty barrier Wall against the foul magic forces that threaten it from the far north. Surprising faces from the past reappear, and everywhere men fight, words betray and allegiances change with the ever-icier winds as the long winter grows ever nearer. Much of this installment takes place in previously unseen corners of the continent across the sea, whose ancient civilizations differ intriguingly from the medieval European ambience of Westeros, giving Martin a chance to draw his universe ever larger and more complex. The density of the world-building and the intricacy of the interwoven plots have drawn comparisons to Tolkien, but Martins world is a grittier sort of place, raw and earthy, often brutal and cruel, but with a fierce devotion to its own realism. This may be a fantasy realm, but here good and evil is never black and white.

News From The

W.H. Over Museum

On August 4th, 5th, and 6th, the Vermillion Lions Club will be hosting the annual pancake breakfast benefit for the Museum at the I-29 rest area east of Vermillion. The Lions have been hosting this event for the past 5 years. Every year, the beginning of the Sturgis Bike Rally is heralded by this fun event. I hope that each of you can find your way out to the rest area at least once during this three-day event. The price of this wonderful breakfast is a free-will donation but we hope everyone who attends, will be as generous with their donation as the Lions are with their pancakes and time. The Friends of the W. H. Over Museum are very pleased to have this yearly event sponsored by the Lions and we are also delighted that they have chosen the Museum as their meeting place. This past month has found the Museum home to the annual Frogman Print display by Lloyd Menard. Each year, a new crop of printmakers display their creations and celebrate a successful project by having a festive dinner at the Museum. Lots of folks visit the display. We have also hosted many tours. We were excited to be part of the mystery tour sponsored by one of the Banks in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Visitors from Japan travelled the most miles to come see our museum. We are getting ready to sponsor our annual fall rummage sale and if you have anything that you would like to donate, except mattresses and clothing, please bring it on out or -call 677-5228 and well arrange to pick it up. In conjunction with the rummage, well have a bake sale. [If you havent already heard, we have THE best bake sales in the state! - seriously] Thanks to our president, Larry Bradley, and our rummage sale maven, Maureen Goddard, we are professional collectors and even surprise ourselves at the amount and diversity of our sale items. The price is right, too. If you have driven past the Museum, and hopefully, you have stopped in for a visit, you have no doubt noticed the immaculately kept grounds surrounding our building. This is thanks to Sam Begay, our janitor, groundskeeper, flag raiser, snow shoveler, light bulb replacer, etc, etc. A few years ago, the city provided funds for us to purchase our own lawn equipment and storage building to keep in which to keep it. Sam is the caretaker for all of that, the grounds, and the building and we are grateful, daily, for the great job that he does. The gorgeous birdbath, which offers entertainment daily, was donated by Friends member Berwyn Svoboda in memory of Mildred. The carefully tended flower pots and plants on the buildings patio are thanks to June Sherman, our 90-year-old tornado. Some of the plants were purchased by the funds garnered from our ongoing used book sale great choices at $1.00 for paper backs and $2.00 for hard covers. Our selection includes everything from classics, mysteries to the latest selections from Debbie Macomber and Nicholas Sparks.

You can whiten chopping boards with lemon juice. Just use the cut side of a lemon to scrub the board, let it sit for up to 10 minutes, and rinse clean. If youre stuffing pillows or a childs toy with foam-rubber chips, rub a bit of fabric softener over your hands first. The tiny pieces wont get stuck to your hands with static, and it will smell nice to boot! Heres a fun activity for the kids: Let them paint cookies. They can even paint the dough before its been cooked, and then see how the design spreads and settles. Scammers at the Door

The young guy at my door said the infamous words: The offer is only good for today. And he wanted payment in cash. That put me on alert. He was selling driveway resurfacing. Said he had enough asphalt left to do only one job, and hed give me a good deal. I told him no. There are some rules of thumb in this experience, when it comes to home maintenance: 1. Beware those who come to the door offering services. Take their card, yes, and ask for a price if youre interested, but dont agree to any work either verbally or in writing. 2. If the work is something youre truly interested in having done, do it a different way. Start by getting references from friends. Ask whether theyre happy with the job that was done, and whether any issues were taken care of promptly. Get legitimate bids from people you call, not those who show up at the door. 3. Call the local Better Business Bureau to check on any complaints. 4. If your job involves skilled labor, just as with electrical or plumbing, ask for a copy of the license and verify it with the state agency. 5. Ask for a copy of the insurance certificate and verify it with the company. 6. Dont sign a contract you dont understand. Have a trusted adviser go over it with you. Refuse to be rushed. 7. Beware giving a large down payment. If a supplier will be involved, call them and ask for a reference. 8. Certain types of work require a permit. Verify with your local authorities. Not all those who come to your door are scammers, but the odds are increased for any type of business relationship that you dont initiate yourself.

Scans Now Reveal Blast Brain Damage

Its estimated that there have been 320,000 brain injuries caused by blasts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of them, according to a study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, were diagnosed as mild or concussive because nothing physical could be seen on imaging scans. Its now possible for the effects of concussion to be seen on brain scans. The study done at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a U.S. military hospital in Germany, used a different type of Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan that can see damage to the brain down at the axon level (where nerve impulses are transmitted). All researchers did was to upgrade the MRI to Diffusion Tensor Imaging and use analysis software. Sixty-three military personnel who had been in blasts with an additional injury (being hit with something in the explosion) were scanned. Their initial diagnosis had been mild, uncomplicated brain injury due to loss of consciousness, amnesia or being dazed. They were tested along with two dozen others who had been in blasts and had injuries but who had no sign of brain injury. Those suffering from the effects of explosions often have the mental and emotional components, with no proof of physical damage. The DTI scans showed marked abnormalities, while the standard scans didnt show a thing. Six months to a year afterward, a follow-up showed persistent abnormalities in 47 patients. The conclusion was that TBI can involve axonal injury, which is akin to severe whiplash, wherein the brain is rattled around in the skull -- and it can now, in many cases, be seen. While this advance doesnt allow for a specific diagnosis or prediction of future brain health, it is a big step forward as the tests can now be run on standard MRI machines.

that motion pictures just dont have time like novels do. The story has quite a few twists and turns as the tides change for the protagonist, yet the film still takes the necessary time to get every drop out of the astounding scenery and the smoldering performances of Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. Thats What I Am (PG) This coming-of-age dramedy set in mid-60s America tackles issues of tolerance, determination and principles. The story follows the trials of Andy, a fairly typical 12-year-old boy, as he sets his sights on his first crush. When wise, compassionate eighth-grade teacher, Mr. Simon (Ed Harris) pairs Andy with the class reject a lanky, awkward redhaired boy called Big-G, lessons are learned all around. Its a touching family movie that is nothing short of a full-on surprise from World Wrestling Entertainment Productions. You may recognize a wrestler trying on a dramatic role, and holding it up well enough. But Harris does the real heavy lifting, as he puts even-handed wisdom in a suplex and breaks a chair over the head of adolescent issues. DOG OF THE WEEK Priest (R) In an alternate world where mankind has been at war with vampires since the beginning, the Priests are an elite vamp-killing order established by the church. Well, theyre not vampires so much as slimy, eyeless, computer-animated reptiles that dont do well in sunlight. For a movie that has no problem playing fast and loose with rules for vampires and priests, it sure doesnt take any chances trying to be original in any other way. The characters, the dialogue, the plotline, and especially the setting are all straight-faced, unapologetic, 100 percent recycled material.

But this is one time when its wiser to be wary of where your heart takes you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) With all (or most) of those pesky problems behind you, take time for your family and friends. Travel aspects are favored, with long-distance journeys high on the list. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have started to question the wisdom of being open with someone you hoped you could trust. But be assured you wont be disappointed. Youll soon hear good news. PICKS OF THE WEEK Jane Eyre (PG-13) A young woman in Victorian England, plain in appearance, leaves a troubled past behind and finds herself in the employ of a charming and complicated man. Its another in a long series of adaptations of Charlotte Brontes novel, and this one stands out among the rest. The pace of the film is handled with care, but keeps in mind

receiving unit that lacks a deep threat. Greg Camarillo and Percy Harvin are both most effective in the slot, while Devin Aromashodu and Juaquin Iglesias are largely unproven in the NFL. All I can say is Randy Moss Take 3! If Sidney stays, then they are set at the WR position with the field-spreading Rice opening things up for Harvin across the middle. Rice would be on a better quarterbacked team in Minnesota than Seattle, who just subjected themselves to something Viking fans unaffectionately know as T-Jack. It makes sense to re-sign Sidney, but the ownership has to keep in mind the pending extensions for Adrian Peterson and Chad Greenway, who are arguably both more valuable. IS ThERE ANYONE LEFT ON ThE D-LINE? Other than Jared Allen, not really. Its going to be a tough task sustaining the run-stopping dominance of the Brad Childress era. Ray (or should I call him Sugar Ray) Edwards is gone from Minnesota and seems to be pursuing his boxing career more than an NFL future. Pat Williams may or may not retire, but has no intention of returning to the Vikings. Kevin Williams is facing a possible substance-abuse suspension for the age-old StarCaps incident, which would ban him from playing until Week 5. Tackle Jimmy Kennedy was released last Tuesday to conserve cap-space, and the presumed replacement for Ray Edwards Everson Griffen spent the offseason getting busted by the LAPD. The Vikings will have to mix and match positions just to field a starting defensive line, especially if Williams is suspended. Its inevitable that at least one rookie will start, barring a free-agent acquisition. Im mentally preparing myself for opposing teams to average 5 yards per carry and 200 yards per game on the ground. Can Mike Singletary put on a helmet and play? Thats why they hired him, right? IS ThIS ThE LAST SEASON IN ThE METRODOME? I think the answer to that question is unequivocally yes. The bigger question is, Where will they be playing next year? The options are the Gophers TCF Bank Stadium or Stadium X in City X. The Dome is literally falling apart and has no place in todays profit-obsessed NFL. With Minnesotas government unable to figure out their own problems, a new stadium bill has been put on the back-burner until further notice. The in-state options for a new building are a nuclear power plant in Arden Hills or a demolish and rebuild project on the Metrodome site. Similar to a player whose contract is expiring, you want to amend this issue before the lease runs out and the Vikings, in essence, become a free agent. If this fiasco is drawn into the offseason, then Minnesota will be wined and dined by multiple cities that would pay top dollar for a franchise. The clock is ticking on Minnesotas government to iron out a deal because the public pressure is going to mount more and more with every passing month. Personally, Ill need a new deal by Christmas to have any sanity going into 2012. hOW WILL ThE VIkINGS DO ThIS SEASON? My prediction: 7 to 10 wins. I think they will compete for a wild-card spot in the final two weeks of the season and win some big games in a tough NFC North. There are too many holes for them to accomplish a deep playoff run, but I guarantee one thing: it will be better than last year.

Dollars and Sense

At long last the Deal or No Deal greed-fest between players and owners is complete.
The NFLPA ratified the leagues new collective bargaining agreement last Monday, meaning that its time to schedule our fantasy drafts, order DirecTVs football package, and totally wipe from our memories the last 4 months of revenue splitting, antitrust lawsuits, and recertification. So where does all this legal drama leave the Vikings with just 2 weeks until their first pre-season game? Here are 5 talkers heading into Year 1 under Coach Leslie Frazier: WhY McNABB? The Vikings turned some heads by trading for 35-year old QB Donovan McNabb last week, bringing him over from Washington for a couple of 6th round picks. McNabb wasnt exactly on the Vikes radar entering the offseason, but after seeing Alex Smith re-sign with San Francisco, Kellen Clemens fill Donovans spot in Washington, and Tyler Thigpen sign long-term with Buffalo, the lead spokesperson for Chunky Soup became pretty appealing. Heres my hang-up with McNabb: Im not sure hes going to be the mentor the Vikings want him to be. The reason the Vikings couldnt land a 20-something year-old vet was because any potential signee knew that Christian Ponder is the quarterback of the near future. McNabbs 2010 was so bad that the Vikings got him for pennies on the dollar, but will that humble McNabb or fuel him? Will he be willing to take a drastic pay-cut and groom his immediate replacement, or will he be determined to regain the form that got him to Super Bowl XXXIX? This may be an attempt by owner Zygi Wilf to avoid rebuilding completely. A McNabb-led team will always be considered a contender, so why not make the crossover year between Favre and Ponder a little more competitive? All I can say is, I hope Donovan gets along better with Leslie Frazier than he did with Mike Shanahan. WILL SIDNEY RICE RETURN? Currently meaning 6 days before you are reading this the Vikes and Seahawks are in a bidding war for the standout wide-receiver. Unfortunately, the bar was raised Wednesday when the Jets signed Santonio Holmes to a lucrative 5-year, $50 million deal, meaning Rice will probably demand no less than $40-45 million. With the Vikings over the salary cap, and Rices old offensive coordinator now in Seattle, it doesnt look too promising for seeing Sidney in purple. If Rice decides to leave the snow in Minny and get rained on in Seattle, the Vikings will have big shoes to fill. After the expected release of Bernard Berrian, the Vikings will have a

Cheaper Ways to Watch Movies at Home

For millions of families, the cost of movie night at home just went up. Netflix, the popular DVD rental company, unexpectedly raised its rates by as much as 60 percent last month. No longer can you get movies and all the streaming you want for one low price. Now the movies and the streaming have separate costs, and to get both the DVDs delivered to your door and streaming will cost more. There are other ways to watch inexpensive movies, however, if you know where to look. If you dont already have a means of streaming movies, check into the Roku [www.roku.com], a nifty little streaming box. It comes in three levels: $60, $80 and $100. Price is determined by high-definition level (720p or 1080p), but all come with built-in wireless. Be sure to hunt around the settings to see all thats offered with Roku more than 300 channels with music, movies and shows. Many of the services, such as Crackle, are free. Hulu Plus and Amazon offer inexpensive access to movies. Pandora, the movie channel, is free. Youll find EPIX movies and ondemand sports. Additionally, with Roku youll have access (some free) to some international movies and television shows. And yes, you can access Netflix if you have the streaming option. If you only want to stream to your computer or mobile phone, check Zediva [www.Zediva.com] for $1.99 new movie rentals. And heres a bonus: You dont have to pay with a credit card on its site. You can pay with PayPal if you prefer. Bigger bonus: If you pay for a package of 10 movies, the cost drops to a dollar apiece. However, due to the way Zediva has set up its relationship with the movie studios, only a certain number of copies of a given movie are available at any one time. Read the FAQ to be sure you understand the limits. If youre a parent and going to be in the market for a new DVD player soon, consider getting one of the inexpensive combo DVD and VCR players. You can save money on the kids movies by shopping yard sales, where you can find hundreds of older VHS movies for a fraction of the cost of the DVD version. (Youll also be less upset when the kids unwind a movie tape than you would be if they scratch a new DVD.) david uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. write to him in care of King features weekly service, P.o. box 536475, orlando, fL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.
