Donna's Day:
by Donna Erickson
by samantha weaver
It was noted psychiatrist and sleep researcher William C. Dement who made the following sage observation: Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives. For reasons that arent entirely clear in the record at hand, its illegal to wear a hat while dancing in Fargo, N.D. Despite the fact that the English language is very large in terms of the number of words available to those who can use them, it seems that much of our writing is made up of only a few words. In a study once conducted by lexicographer G.H. McKnight, it was found that approximately one-quarter of all the words in any given sample of writing in English is one of the following nine: and, be, have, it, of, the, to, will and you. Some species of squid can swim up to 35 mph. If youre an avid hiker, you might want to keep in mind that the most dangerous trail in America, according to Backpacker magazine, is located in Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The trail known as The Maze earned this distinction thanks to numerous dead-end canyons, few sources of water and temperatures that soar to over 100 degrees F. in summer. If youre like me, youre a turophile: a lover of cheese. When the eggs of the Darwin frog hatch and the tadpoles emerge, the babies are swallowed by a male frog. Theyre not victims of cannibalism, however; the father keeps the tadpoles in his vocal sac for two months. Once theyve matured and become tiny frogs, the young ones are coughed up and have to fend for themselves. Thought for the Day: Its not a good idea to put your wife into a novel; not your latest wife, anyway. Norman Mailer

outside of the bucket; the vibrations cause the wet sand to settle and harden. Repeat with more sand and water until the bucket is full and the sand feels very firm. 3. Tap the sides of the bucket again and gently lift it upward to reveal a large silolike sand shape. Now you have the basic building block for your castle, Mount Rushmore-esque sculpture or wacky design. When you get going, just let it expand with your imagination. The goal, according to Kirk, is that you dont want the sand shape to look like a five-gallon bucket any longer. source: www.sandguy.com. donna ericksons award-winning series donnas day is airing on public television nationwide. to find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com and link to the new donnas day facebook fan page. her latest book is donna ericksons fabulous funstuff for families.

FRUITY SPORTS DRINk Using natural fruit juices adds both natural sugars and vitamins to your sports drink. Adding sea salt instead of table salt adds an electrolyte source, as the minerals of the sea are very similar to the electrolyte composition in our blood. Sea salt contains 84 minerals, including sodium, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and helps to replenish the minerals you lose through perspiration. 1/2 can (3 ounces) frozen, unsweetened orange juice 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice 3/4 teaspoon sea salt 2 quarts water Using a large pitcher, mix all of the ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate and stir to recombine before serving. Makes 2 quarts. hOMEMADE POWDERED SPORTS DRINk 9 tablespoons organic or raw sugar 3/8 teaspoon sea salt 1 packet unsweetened powdered fruit-drink mix Mix together the sugar, salt and powdered fruit drink until well-combined. Place 1/3 of the mixture into each of three small resealable bags. To reconstitute, add the contents of 1 bag to a 20-ounce sports bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with water, close and shake to mix. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake to mix again. Alternately, add half the powdered drink to a 20-ounce bottle of water. Replace cap and shake to mix. Add the rest of the powdered drink, replace cap, and shake to mix. Makes 3 servings.

ter. Keep slices of watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and other such water-packed fruits in the refrigerator. They are excellent sources of water, sugar and electrolytes, and the perfect grab and go refresher on a hot summers day. Keep in mind that the thirst mechanism can become weak in senior citizens, so they may need to implement a way of assuring they drink enough water. Some people fill a pitcher with six or so cups of water in the morning and make sure that they drink the entire contents by the time they go to bed. At the other end of the life span are children, who often ignore thirst cues. It is important to assure they are drinking enough fluids, especially if theyre playing outdoors. A good gauge of hydration is the color of their urine. A dark-yellow color is an indicator they are not drinking enough fluids. Just remember that if the weather is hot and youre sweating, that precious fluid needs to be replaced. Next time you venture out into the heat, dont forget to pack a bottle full of this Fruity Sports Drink, or take along a package of the Homemade Powdered Sports Drink to add to your bottle of water!

A: Cereal premiums have always been popular with collectors. Since the brand was known for promoting sports figures, your ring might have come from a box of Wheaties. After checking with several experts, we came to the conclusion that your ring is likely worth in the $15 to $25 range depending, of course, on condition.

chalk portrait signed by Princess Eugenia E. de Kactwra, dated Aug. 10, 1966, New Orleans. We have it stored in a safety deposit box and would like to know more about the artist, since I have some people wanting to purchase the picture Charles, Port Orange, Fla. A: This answer is a little involved, so stay with me. During the 1960s, I was a flower child and lived in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Jackson Square was a perfect gathering place for dozens of interesting characters, including Janie the Duck Girl (who was followed by a pet duck everywhere she went), Heavenly Hilda (an overthe-hill street singer I always suspected was a man), Billy Blotto (a two-fisted drinker always in an alcoholic stupor) and last but not least the Polish Princess, a bird-like woman who could be found most afternoons on the Square doing chalk portraits for tourists. I suspect the picture you have is by this artist and might not be as valuable as you think. To find out for certain, I suggest you contact the Art Dealers Association of America, 575 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10022. Donna Carlson is the groups director, and she might be able to recommend a member who can help you. This wont necessarily be a free service, but I think it is always a good idea to get a professional opinion when in doubt about a collectible. My big question is, whatever happened to Janie the Duck Girl? Q: I have a small childs ring that I think probably came from a cereal box. It is plastic, silver in color, and has a design that features an image of the boxer, Gene Tunney. Does it have any value? Roger, Peoria, Ill.

blood pressure also drops the flow of blood to the brain That can trigger seizures. The explanation for this is a surge in the bodys stress chemicals that affect heart function. Damage to the heart muscle isnt permanent. The heart returns to good health in a matter of weeks. You didnt mention any prior stress. Do you recollect any? On the plus side, your heart arteries are in good shape, and you ought not to suffer a recurrence. The booklet on congestive heart failure does not address broken-heart syndrome specifically, but it does detail a more common condition, its treatment and its prognosis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipients printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have weak kidneys due to type 1 diabetes. My doctor has me eating three fruits a day and four vegetables. He limited my meat to 6 ounces daily. Does this limitation of meat benefit my kidneys? E.L. ANSWER: Many times, when the kidneys arent working up to par (weak kidneys), doctors put their patients on a reduced-protein diet. It slows the decline of kidney function. Thats why your doctor limited your meat (protein) intake. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is distilled water bad for drinking? Can you chew too much gum? My husband chews about four pieces every day. P.M. ANSWER: Distilling water involves boiling water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components

You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways. If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much. or volunteer corn in the soybean fields. We chopped them out. By hand. Everybody did back then. It was hot, sticky work, even in the early morning before the dew dried up. Wading waist-high through the scratchy leaves was bad enough. Hacking away at a stubborn stand of milkweed was another. They werent as tough as cockleburrs, though. At least milkweed didnt bite back! The best part about walking beans was going back to Grandmas house for lunch. She always had Fizzies for us kids. And I think it was more fun to make them than quench our thirst with them. Just plop the tablets into Grandmas colored tin glasses and voila! Pink, purple or orange effervescence exploded before our very eyes! Kool-aid didnt stand a chance! The flavors of summer also included finger-staining, tongue-bluing mulberries, fresh off the tree. Sugar-snap peas right out of the garden were a great snack, too. As long as I didnt have to pick and shuck enough for supper! And when I discovered how sweet and crunchy infant field corn was, that was a true revelation! Whod have thunk that you could eat the cob, too! Summer. Cicadas singing. Mourning doves cooing. Humidity so heavy it hangs in the air like a curtain. Distant thunder of an impending storm. Walking barefoot. Catching fireflies. Running through the sprinkler. Summer.

Jurassic Park 4 is going to made. But so far, no movie. Will it ever happen? Paul G., Miami A: All signs point to yes. Producer/director Steven Spielberg told a crowd of enthusiastic sci-fi fans at last months San Diego Comic-Con fan convention that there will be another Jurassic Park, and it might be only two to three years away. Steven said that he has a story and a screenwriter ready to go for the fourth movie of the dinosaur-clone series, and Steven himself will serve as producer. Q: I really love MTVs new teen comedy, Awkward. The actor who plays Matty looks really familiar. Can you tell me what else I might have seen him in recently? -- Cara D., via e-mail A: Beau Mirchoff, 21, plays Matty, the nice-guy jock with a heart and it appears he also has a thing for our heroine, Jenna. You might remember Beau from Heartland, or from his turn as Drea de Matteos son on Desperate Housewives. Of his year on DH, Beau told me: I learned so much from all the people on that set. They are pros, and they know what theyre doing. I learned a lot from Jeffrey Nordling, who played my father, and Drea de Matteo, who was my mother. I had a big crush on Drea. I hope it didnt read on camera. That would have been creepy. Playing a teen on Awkward has Beau remembering his own awkward time in high school: Everything seems like such a dire situation. Like its the last time youll be able to do something. Or its the end of the world if you cant go out with that girl. But its really not, and its so insignificant looking back. But youre growing up and youre figuring things out. Q: I was so sad to hear about the passing of singer Amy Winehouse. Do authorities know what caused her death? Grant D., via e-mail A: Toxicology reports will probably take weeks to get back, so it might be a while before we know what killed the troubled songstress, who was only 27 when she passed away on July 23. Amy had publicly battled addiction, but police say there were no signs of drug or paraphernalia in her home at the time of her death.
YO U D ON' T SAY

Charles J. Brady once said The real measure of a days heat is the length of a sleeping cat. Wally, my cat, is really long in these dog days of summer. But he doesnt know how lucky he is surrounded by the fresh breeze of air conditioning. I grew up without that cooling luxury. It was hot, to be sure, but I didnt know any different, so I got along just fine. I fell asleep to the whirring of a big old box fan stuck in the window to suck in any cool night air that might be around after sunset. But if humidity was all that it stirred up, the fan went on the dresser with the window shut tight. I spent a lot more time outside back then than I do now. It was probably just as hot in the house as it was under the shade of the giant cottonwood tree that held my tire swing, so I swung a lot. To cool off I just dangled my feet in the stock tank on the edge of the cattle yard. The slimy green moss on the bottom gooshed between my toes, which was kind of fun. If you like that sort of thing. When Mom and Dad gave me a horse for my 13th birthday, I rode to Mission Hill to cool off in the artesian pond there. Cindy grazed on shore while I took a dip (not the skinny kind) in the clear, chilly water. But that was only during the early summer weeks. The water took on a rusty hue and seemed to thicken up as the season progressed. Thats when wed go to the Memorial Park pool in Yankton. I dont remember the swimming so much as I do enjoying the sticky sweetness of cinnamon Jolly Rancher Fire Stix candy and banana flavored taffy from the concession stand. Each for only a nickel. But cooling off wasnt always the priority back then. Mowing was. Thats what summer meant at the farm. And we had a big yard. Mom did it the majority of the time, but Jan and I were called into service, too. (Dad was lucky he had books to write!) That was the only tractor I learned how to drive an International Harvester Farmall Cub bright red with a belly mower attached. I may have whined a bit when it was my turn to man the mower, but it really was kind of fun. Power steering would have been a nice touch, though! Walking beans was not fun. We never sprayed the weeds

Last month I asked you to mark your calendar for October 23 so that you would be sure not to miss Gordy Pratts appearance at the Museum. This month, put a bigger mark on that date. A performance by Gordy Pratt is really very special. We have had so many great musicians perform at the Museum and it always amazes me that we dont pack the house John and Susan McNeill have played at our banquets, fundraisers, and just to entertain for several years. Bruce Grays group, The Good People, have performed for us several times. I know museums are often thought of as stuffy places and folks wonder why anyone would bother to care if a museum is there or not. Vermillion and South Dakota are extremely fortunate that the Friends of the W. H. Over Museum care and care deeply about the very existence of the Over. The W. H. Over Museum is named for an individual who was quite ordinary and worked hard to establish a great museum. I think that he did establish a museum that reflects our South Dakota people and values. In this building you can see the states history, folklore, ethnic heritage and wonderful, wonderful items which make us the unique state that we are today. One can see names that adorn buildings on the campus or who are prominent in our state and towns history. We have everything from the crudest tools imaginable to the most beautiful household items to be seen. We have historic items that hold special places in our towns history, such as the bell that is displayed in the foyer. Our one-room school replica fascinates our young visitors. There is a bell in that display that they can ring. Our museum honors those who have gone before by displaying items used in the pioneers daily lives. The Over Museum is a special place; we are supported by donations and lots of volunteer help. You are invited to join us by becoming a member of the Friends of the W. H. Over Museum. As usual, I invite you to come on over to the Over coffee is on, gift shop is open, and wed love to have you visit us at our I mean YOUR museum! See you, too, at the rest area for pancakes.

her in her ongoing campaign to win back her familys throne. But even armed with three powerful dragons and a host of warriors, the young rebel queen is having trouble holding on to the lands shes already conquered, as foes emerge from all sides, and even within her ranks. Back in Westeros, Nights Watch commander Jon Snow does his best to strengthen the mighty barrier Wall against the foul magic forces that threaten it from the far north. Surprising faces from the past reappear, and everywhere men fight, words betray and allegiances change with the ever-icier winds as the long winter grows ever nearer. Much of this installment takes place in previously unseen corners of the continent across the sea, whose ancient civilizations differ intriguingly from the medieval European ambience of Westeros, giving Martin a chance to draw his universe ever larger and more complex. The density of the world-building and the intricacy of the interwoven plots have drawn comparisons to Tolkien, but Martins world is a grittier sort of place, raw and earthy, often brutal and cruel, but with a fierce devotion to its own realism. This may be a fantasy realm, but here good and evil is never black and white.

that motion pictures just dont have time like novels do. The story has quite a few twists and turns as the tides change for the protagonist, yet the film still takes the necessary time to get every drop out of the astounding scenery and the smoldering performances of Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. Thats What I Am (PG) This coming-of-age dramedy set in mid-60s America tackles issues of tolerance, determination and principles. The story follows the trials of Andy, a fairly typical 12-year-old boy, as he sets his sights on his first crush. When wise, compassionate eighth-grade teacher, Mr. Simon (Ed Harris) pairs Andy with the class reject a lanky, awkward redhaired boy called Big-G, lessons are learned all around. Its a touching family movie that is nothing short of a full-on surprise from World Wrestling Entertainment Productions. You may recognize a wrestler trying on a dramatic role, and holding it up well enough. But Harris does the real heavy lifting, as he puts even-handed wisdom in a suplex and breaks a chair over the head of adolescent issues. DOG OF THE WEEK Priest (R) In an alternate world where mankind has been at war with vampires since the beginning, the Priests are an elite vamp-killing order established by the church. Well, theyre not vampires so much as slimy, eyeless, computer-animated reptiles that dont do well in sunlight. For a movie that has no problem playing fast and loose with rules for vampires and priests, it sure doesnt take any chances trying to be original in any other way. The characters, the dialogue, the plotline, and especially the setting are all straight-faced, unapologetic, 100 percent recycled material.

receiving unit that lacks a deep threat. Greg Camarillo and Percy Harvin are both most effective in the slot, while Devin Aromashodu and Juaquin Iglesias are largely unproven in the NFL. All I can say is Randy Moss Take 3! If Sidney stays, then they are set at the WR position with the field-spreading Rice opening things up for Harvin across the middle. Rice would be on a better quarterbacked team in Minnesota than Seattle, who just subjected themselves to something Viking fans unaffectionately know as T-Jack. It makes sense to re-sign Sidney, but the ownership has to keep in mind the pending extensions for Adrian Peterson and Chad Greenway, who are arguably both more valuable. IS ThERE ANYONE LEFT ON ThE D-LINE? Other than Jared Allen, not really. Its going to be a tough task sustaining the run-stopping dominance of the Brad Childress era. Ray (or should I call him Sugar Ray) Edwards is gone from Minnesota and seems to be pursuing his boxing career more than an NFL future. Pat Williams may or may not retire, but has no intention of returning to the Vikings. Kevin Williams is facing a possible substance-abuse suspension for the age-old StarCaps incident, which would ban him from playing until Week 5. Tackle Jimmy Kennedy was released last Tuesday to conserve cap-space, and the presumed replacement for Ray Edwards Everson Griffen spent the offseason getting busted by the LAPD. The Vikings will have to mix and match positions just to field a starting defensive line, especially if Williams is suspended. Its inevitable that at least one rookie will start, barring a free-agent acquisition. Im mentally preparing myself for opposing teams to average 5 yards per carry and 200 yards per game on the ground. Can Mike Singletary put on a helmet and play? Thats why they hired him, right? IS ThIS ThE LAST SEASON IN ThE METRODOME? I think the answer to that question is unequivocally yes. The bigger question is, Where will they be playing next year? The options are the Gophers TCF Bank Stadium or Stadium X in City X. The Dome is literally falling apart and has no place in todays profit-obsessed NFL. With Minnesotas government unable to figure out their own problems, a new stadium bill has been put on the back-burner until further notice. The in-state options for a new building are a nuclear power plant in Arden Hills or a demolish and rebuild project on the Metrodome site. Similar to a player whose contract is expiring, you want to amend this issue before the lease runs out and the Vikings, in essence, become a free agent. If this fiasco is drawn into the offseason, then Minnesota will be wined and dined by multiple cities that would pay top dollar for a franchise. The clock is ticking on Minnesotas government to iron out a deal because the public pressure is going to mount more and more with every passing month. Personally, Ill need a new deal by Christmas to have any sanity going into 2012. hOW WILL ThE VIkINGS DO ThIS SEASON? My prediction: 7 to 10 wins. I think they will compete for a wild-card spot in the final two weeks of the season and win some big games in a tough NFC North. There are too many holes for them to accomplish a deep playoff run, but I guarantee one thing: it will be better than last year.

At long last the Deal or No Deal greed-fest between players and owners is complete.
The NFLPA ratified the leagues new collective bargaining agreement last Monday, meaning that its time to schedule our fantasy drafts, order DirecTVs football package, and totally wipe from our memories the last 4 months of revenue splitting, antitrust lawsuits, and recertification. So where does all this legal drama leave the Vikings with just 2 weeks until their first pre-season game? Here are 5 talkers heading into Year 1 under Coach Leslie Frazier: WhY McNABB? The Vikings turned some heads by trading for 35-year old QB Donovan McNabb last week, bringing him over from Washington for a couple of 6th round picks. McNabb wasnt exactly on the Vikes radar entering the offseason, but after seeing Alex Smith re-sign with San Francisco, Kellen Clemens fill Donovans spot in Washington, and Tyler Thigpen sign long-term with Buffalo, the lead spokesperson for Chunky Soup became pretty appealing. Heres my hang-up with McNabb: Im not sure hes going to be the mentor the Vikings want him to be. The reason the Vikings couldnt land a 20-something year-old vet was because any potential signee knew that Christian Ponder is the quarterback of the near future. McNabbs 2010 was so bad that the Vikings got him for pennies on the dollar, but will that humble McNabb or fuel him? Will he be willing to take a drastic pay-cut and groom his immediate replacement, or will he be determined to regain the form that got him to Super Bowl XXXIX? This may be an attempt by owner Zygi Wilf to avoid rebuilding completely. A McNabb-led team will always be considered a contender, so why not make the crossover year between Favre and Ponder a little more competitive? All I can say is, I hope Donovan gets along better with Leslie Frazier than he did with Mike Shanahan. WILL SIDNEY RICE RETURN? Currently meaning 6 days before you are reading this the Vikes and Seahawks are in a bidding war for the standout wide-receiver. Unfortunately, the bar was raised Wednesday when the Jets signed Santonio Holmes to a lucrative 5-year, $50 million deal, meaning Rice will probably demand no less than $40-45 million. With the Vikings over the salary cap, and Rices old offensive coordinator now in Seattle, it doesnt look too promising for seeing Sidney in purple. If Rice decides to leave the snow in Minny and get rained on in Seattle, the Vikings will have big shoes to fill. After the expected release of Bernard Berrian, the Vikings will have a
