Newspaper Art icle Cit at ion: Marvin Harris. "WHY MEN DOMINATE WOMEN :Startling new evidence of female infanticide, the nature of prehistoric warfare and early fears of overpopulation and depleted resources offers fresh clues to male supremacisim. SEXISM. " New York Times (1923-Current file) 13 Nov. 1977,ProQuest Historical Newspapers The New York Times (1851 - 2007), ProQuest. Web. 18 Jul. 2011. Newspaper Art icle Annot at ion: Marvin Harris, a writer for the New York Times, writes to readers of the newspaper. This article centers around what sexism is, why it exists and ponders when and how it may have come about. His main statement about the origins of sexism is that the sexist roles of man and woman were instilled in us from the time when we were in bands of hunter gatherer societies. He states that because during that time in human life men needed to be brawny and warrior-like in order to got o war with other bands, and they were rewarded with sex for doing so. It created this relationship between the sexes. This was really helpful in understanding our knowledge or opinion of sexism and what it really stands for. Its one thing to look at what sexism is but what people think sexism is equally if not more important. General Int erest Art icle Cit at ion: Vandergeld, Elaine. "Are Working-Class Men More Sexist?." Off Our Backs 35.1/2 (2005): 39-40. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 30 July 2011. General Int erest Art icle Annot at ion: Elaine Vandergeld, a writer for Off Our Backs magazine (feminist magazine), writes Are Working-Class Men More Sexist for readers who are probably feminists. This article centers around the idea of whether or not sexism is more a part of the working class or the higher class of people. She makes valid points about both but what I really took from this article was more dealing with how class affects sexism as a whole. Readers are given examples of how the higher class used sexism as an excuse to try to stunt procreation

rate of the lower class because they stated that lower class women were more sexually lascivious. So while this piece was maybe not as centered around my topic it still branches out to demonstrate different ways sexism affects different aspects or levels of society. Scholarly Art icle Cit at ion: Goldberg, Steven. "Is Patriarchy Inevitable?." National Review 48.21 (1996): 32-36. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 19 July 2011. Scholarly Art icle Annot at ion: Steven Goldberg, former President of the Sociology Department of the City College of New York and widely known for his theory of patriarchy, writes to an audience of sociologists in this scholarly paper. The paper focuses on what causes sexism. Goldberg states that although there are many different cultures in the world each distinct from the others, they all share some common features. One of these is the fact that men, no matter what the position (doctor, political leader, etc.) may be, are always occupying positions which in each respective society are higher than that of a position that women commonly occupy. Goldberg states that this is because men are more prone to seek higher positions than women are. This was interesting to take into consideration when look at other explanations for sexism.
