espite Folly Beach being trumped

by Isle of Palms in the annual
dirtiest beach on the Fifth of
July contest, the mid-summer calls to
curb drinking on the beach are sounding
stronger now than in previous years.
A group of supporters have formed on
Facebook, using the secret (hidden) group
name, B4aSaferFolly, and theyve gained
the support of the Surfrider Foundation.
Begun on July 15 by Facebook user
Laurie Hull, the groups de facto leader
online is Bubber Hutto of 920 East
Cooper Ave. He and other supporters
sent several letters to Folly Beach City
Council in July, citing what they see as
problems on the beach and calling for the
repeal of drinking rights on the beach as
the solution.
When you have an open bar on the
beach, it attracts every professional **hole
from three counties, says Hutto, who feels
the problem on Folly is worsened because
the other Charleston beach communities
ban drinking. Tere are people who
drink on the Isle of Palms, but if you
run around drinking and start screaming
(obscenities) in front of a bunch of kids,
somebodys going to fip open their cell
phone and tell on you. So everybody is a
bit more circumspect about what they do
when they drink on IOP and Sullivans
Island. Tey mind their manners.
After the now-infamous trashing of
Folly Beach on July 4, 2009, eforts to ban
drinking on the beach made headlines.
Te City said they wanted to try other
methods to control the problem, but
Hutto feels it hasnt worked. He hesitates
to comment on specifcs about the Citys
approach, instead waiting to allow council
time to reply to letters sent this month.
Among those, George Schneider of
1008 East Erie Ave. wrote, By continuing
to allow the consumption of alcohol
on our beach the city government
of Folly Beach is abdicating its most
basic responsibility to its residents.
Tis failure to protect the rights of the
residents of Folly Beach has resulted
in a diminished quality of life, the
nullifcation of some property rights,
a compromise of public safety and the
lowering of property values.
In his letter, Schneider claims that
he saw eight diferent males urinating
near his home on the Fourth of July,
and compares the Beach Patrol giving
cups to beach-goers who are breaking
the open container law to parking
meter readers handing out quarters.
Our residents must tolerate
trespassing, destruction of our private
property and endure the humiliating
experience of having our yards openly
used as toilets, writes Schneider. Te
increased frequency of these property
violations is going to result in more
and more confrontations between
homeowners and violators that will
inevitably escalate, and I feel that the
Folly City government will be morally
if not legally culpable.
On Facebook, Hutto even stated
that around his home at 10th block
east, Our neighborhood is simply not
safe on weekends anymore.
In his own letter to council and
City staf, Hutto writes, Even with
the police constantly on hand, we are
still relegated to staying on our properties
just to guard against vandalism, theft and
trespassing. Even leaving the beach for
big weekends to get away from it all is no
longer an option, unless you are willing
to leave your property at the mercy of
hundreds of drunken people, and return
to clean up and repair whatever they feel
they can use or destroy.
Council member D.J. Rich points out
that a few citizens typically speak out each
year after the Fourth of July weekend,
encouraging an end to Follys use a cup
rule that allows drinking on the beach.
I can understand both sides of it,
says Rich, who sees pros and cons to the
open-container law as both a resident and
business owner. Rich points out that with
the election next spring, supporters of a
ban could gather enough signatures to
put a referendum on the ballot, garnering
an accurate gauge of public opinion on
the issue.

Council unanimously approved the
consent agenda, including a bid for a
$23,976 two-year landscaping contract
towards Eddie Ellis Landscaping.
PERSONAL APPEARANCES
Jason Trotta of 1270 Horseshoe Bend,
Mt. Pleasant, and founder of local
charity, Try for the Kids, requested
permission to launch a 25-mile charitable
bike ride at 8 a.m. on Aug. 6 from the
Tides Hotel parking lot. Roughly 50
bikers will depart from the hotel and
cycle down Center Street, according to
Trotta. Trotta said the event will beneft
Charleston-based organization, Louies
Kids, founded in 2001 by Louis Yuhasz
in an efort to combat childhood obesity.
After traversing Center Street, bikers
will wind through various James Island
back roads and city streets until ending
at downtown restaurant, California
Dreaming. Before leaving the stand,
Trotta extended an invitation to Mayor
Goodwin to participate in the bike ride.
For the ride? You kidding me? joked
Mayor Goodwin. When I was 20 years
younger, maybe.
Council unanimously approved Trottas
request.
James Island residents Brooke and
Tomas Kortenhoeven, 226 Woodland
Shores Road petitioned for a waiver
to Ordinance 24-11 -- an ordinance
defning and restricting transient vendors
on Folly Beach -- and sought permission
to open a vendor stand at W. Erie Avenue
and Center Street, ofering food and
soft drinks from 9 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.
beginning July 27.
Tere are about 50 to 60 employees
of the hotel, condos, bars and eateries on
Folly that need something to eat when
they get of work -- theres nowhere
to get food after 2:30 a.m., said Mr.
Kortenhoeven. I believe that our
business on Center Street will help that
crowd spend more money on Folly Beach
at nighttime.
Due to late hours of operation,
the business will not interfere with
trafc, or infringe upon other local
businesses commerce, according to Mrs.
Kortenhoeven.
Mr. Kortenhoeven said more than
$3,500 in signifcant investments
were spent to prepare the business,
including mobile food unit costs and
South Carolina retail license fees. We
estimate that we spent between 165 to
175 man hours trying to put our business
together, said Mr. Kortenhoeven.
Mayor Goodwin questioned the
prospective owners compliance with
DHEC requirements and inquired about
a mandatory base of operations, equipped
with a commercial kitchen, separate
from the business owners residence. Mr.
Kortenhoeven said theyve requested
approval from DHEC to house their base
of operations in their residence, and are
awaiting approval.
Mr. Kortenhoeven also said the
business will occupy an existing vendor
space. Were not asking to add a space,
but were working with a friend whos
helping us, said Mr. Kortenhoeven.
Hes not using his space at night and
were going to use it. Mayor Goodwin
said city requirements suggest their
location is already maxed out on vendors
per lot, however.
Council unanimously opposed the
Kortenhoevens request.
ORDINANCES
(Require three readings for approval)
Tird Readings:
No. 22-11 (Approval of 2011-2012
budget for City of Folly Beach)
Te 2011-2012 budget currently refects
total revenue and expenditures equaling
roughly $5 million, with approximately
$400,500 in reserve funds. Despite near-
identical fgures, the budget does not
propose a tax increase.
Councilman Pennell Clamp expressed
concern for the budgets equal incoming
and outgoing funds. Were gradually
creeping up, spending more money,
more money, more money, said Clamp,
referring to the budgets expenditures. I
cant vote for this budget.
Mayor Goodwin emphasized the
budgets proportionate fgures, however.
Tis budget does not dip into the
reserves, its balanced and theres no
mill increase, said Mayor Goodwin, in
response to Clamps scrutiny.
Council approved budget, 5 to 2, and
adopts the 2011-2012 budget. Clamp and
Ellis opposed.

First Readings:
No. 13-11 (An amendment creating a
Utility Advisory Board)
Councilman Charlie McCarty said
this amendment is tailored to the citys
unique sewer and water situation,
and proposes a Utilities Advisory Board
(UAB) comprised of experts to increase
efciency and efectiveness in handling
utility issues.
Te UAB is not seeking autonomy,
and will address money, engineering and
planning issues accordingly at council
meetings, according to McCarty.
Tere really is no necessity for
monthly meetings -- things happen in
cycles with our utilities, said McCarty,
referring to utility contracts. Hopefully
the revitalization of the Utilities Advisory
Board will leave us as council in much
better position, well in-advance of our
normal budgetary and contractual
obligations, said McCarty.
Council unanimously passed vote.
No. 25-11 (Shifting discretionary
responsibility from Public Safety
Director to Code Enforcement Ofcer in
determining unsanitary and hazardous
properties throughout Folly Beach)
Mike Rashard, 203 E. Huron Avenue
resident, said he feels entrusting a city
ofcial with enforcing property standards
infringes on residents privacy. Its giving
very autocratic powers to one man [Code
Enforcement Ofcer], said Rashard.
Te Magna Carta says a mans property
is his castle, so you dont go in there and
mess with it.
Mayor Goodwin said council is merely
re-designating responsibilities to a Code
Enforcement Ofcer. Te ordinance
has been in place for years and years
and years, and the guy that had the
total power at that point in time was
the Chief of the Public Safety ofce,
said Mayor Goodwin. All were doing
is trying to move it of his [Public Safety
Chief ] shoulders and give it to the Code
Enforcement group, which is usually
where it is in every other city.
Rich said he shares Rashards concerns
towards the citys decision to continue
assigning vast responsibilities to a single
city ofcial. He [Code Enforcement
Ofcer] really could go up to any and
everybody that he doesnt like and say
I dont like what youve done here; you
need to fx this -- theres no appeal
process, said Rich. Instead of just
changing it over to a Code Enforcement
Ofcer, I think the whole Ordinance
needs more work. To give one person that
much power -- regardless of who it is --
its just asking for trouble.
Councilman Eddie Ellis echoed Richs
concerns toward the citys non-existent
appeals process, and said nothing is
preventing unwarranted disputes from
arising between neighbors.
I dont think youre going to cut out
anybody ratting on their neighbor,
responded Mayor Goodwin.
Councilman Paul Hume said
he agrees with the citys decision to shift
responsibilities. It certainly makes more
sense to have the people who are code
To the Folly Current,
Summertime is here, trafc is heavy
and the beach is crowded. Even so, this is
Folly and it is the fnest place in the world
to live; so every day as we dress, let us
put our patience on and count ourselves
fortunate.
Te City has made some progress
moving the trafc somewhat faster
by having a Public Safety control the
trafc light. Another step which has
helped, especially Sunday churchgoers,
is having trafc directed by an ofcer at
the intersection of East and West Indian
and Center Street where two churches
are located with a third one located down
West Indian.
Charleston County initiated a single-
stream recycling residential program
in January of this year. Tis is a Pilot
program to increase the recycling rate in
Charleston County. Residents in select
neighborhoods throughout the County
were selected for the program. Folly Beach
is also being considered as an extension
community; however, there has been no
scheduled beginning date at this time.
Te neighborhoods which have already
been chosen to participate received blue
roll-carts for all their recyclables as will
Folly when it is added as an extension
community.
Instead of being sorted into separate
bins, paper and commingled materials will
go all in one cart for those participating
in the program. Just to show how well
recycling works and the many things that
can be accomplished with the bi-products
of recycling, the special roll-carts used
in the program were manufactured from
plastic milk jugs recycled in Charleston
County. Collections personnel will use
special automated trucks equipped with
mechanical arms to lift and empty the
roll-carts at the curb. Since the driver does
not have to exit the vehicle and repeatedly
lift heavy bins, the process is faster,
more cost-efcient, and safer. Te pilot
program is slated to last about six months
and when completed the data received
from this program will be reviewed and
recommendations for future systems will
be developed.
Council has been busy these last few
months with work sessions and review
of the FY11-12 Budget and some needed
legislation. At the last regular meeting
of City Council, the following ordinances
passed frst reading; 1) an ordinance
adopting the FY11-12 Budget this
budget has no mil rate increase and is a
19.25% decrease over FY10-11 Budget; 2)
an ordinance prohibiting small or large
kegs on the beach and reiterating the fact
that cans are not allowed on the beach
except in coolers, and must remain in
coolers at all times except can be removed
briefy for the purpose of pouring the
contents in a paper or plastic cup and 3)
an ordinance terminating the February
2010 Agreement with Charleston County
regarding the early transfer of Follys
dispatchers to Charleston County. Tis
ordinance should have our dispatchers
back on Folly by October 1, 2011.
I want to thank all our citizens who
were such a big help over the 4th of July in
helping us keep our beach clean and free
of litter. It takes all of us coming together
to protect and preserve our resources. I
also want to thank Public Safety for their
help as this is not an easy job but they,
however, stepped up to the challenge and
made all of us proud.
As the beach season continues, we are
asking you to please be watchful of our
walkovers and let the city know of any
repairs needed or foliage which needs
to be cleared. Our 46 walkovers are tied
to our renourishment funds. Under the
beachfront management plan, we are
responsible for keeping our walkovers
repaired and free so the public can access
the beach and to the extent possible, keep
all parking spaces in the right of way free
of encroachments. Tank you for any
assistance you can give us in this matter.

Dear Editor,
I am a resident of Folly Beach and a
regular customer of the Kangaroo gas
station on Center Street on Folly Beach.
I recently had a disturbing encounter at
the convenience store. It was not due to the
employee but the abuse she was receiving.
Tere were at least 30 customers in line with
one employee manning the register. As I
took my place in line, I heard exasperating
calls of stupid b*tch and dumb*ss
aimed at the sole employee doing the best
she could. I admired the patience she
showed in these circumstances. I turned
to one of the protesters and pointed out
that she was alone (with another register
closed). He agreed.
It came to me that this is a close
encounter to whats happening in
America. Kangaroo is a multi-million
dollar corporation throughout the SE.
Corporations, as a rule, do not take
into account the role they have in small
communities. Profts rule. It is not a local
company, and it shows.
I can understand Kangaroos policy
of cutting back on employees during the
fall or winter when the crowds are gone,
but in June and July when the population
explodes to thousands of tourists, it is
irresponsible to get by on one employee
running the register.
By the way, this was not a one-time
encounter. Most of us know this happens
over and over. Once in June, I counted 35
people in line.
As a microcosm of America (the Edge of
America), we should support with our dollars
what we believe in. We do have options. I
have no afliation with Berts Market, but
when I shop there, I enjoy the service. I
have never seen a line as long as ten or twelve
people. When there is a backup, someone is
called up to help with the customers. Berts

Dear Editor,
Folly people often say, We dont
want to be like Myrtle Beach. Like it or
not, we have some similarities. We are
both fnancially dependent on tourists
and both have a small community of
year round residents. We both want to
attract tourists, but one community ofers
beachside family oriented amusement
parks and games, and one has a few good
restaurants and bars with food. Myrtle
Beach certainly has its share of bars and
restaurants, but at least they have worked
to create a safe, fun vacation environment
for the whole family. Tey also do not
allow alcohol on the beach. I so miss the
Folly Beach of the 50s and 60s complete
with carnival rides, and games. Why have
we abandoned that and worked so hard
not to look like Myrtle Beach? Many,
myself included, hated the look of the
Treasure Island store. I think, somehow
we lost our way in being concerned more
about the look of Folly Beach (whatever
the heck that is) versus the livability. What
we have now is, an attractive town, where
it is too dangerous to walk at night, few
tourist attractions besides the beach, and
very few, family friendly, non-smoking
restaurants. I think its time to rethink
our community and focus on keeping
Folly more family friendly for residents
and tourists. Now its time to be more
like Myrtle Beach in attitude to secure
the safety of our community and tourists.
Folly is one of and maybe the only town in
SC that still allows alcohol on the beach
and there are no benefts to the city, just
huge costs to the town and residents. As
much as I hate it, Im sad to say, I think its
time to consider banning alcohol on the
beach or introducing some restrictions.

Supreme Court Decision Rules Baptism
A Form Of Waterboarding Torture
WASHINGTON, DC--- Te United
States Supreme Court, in the middle of its
July meetings to rule on the most recent set
of cases, decided yesterday that baptism is
a form of waterboarding torture, and from
this point on will be illegal and punishable
by law. Waterboarding, defned as torture
where one forces another under water until
they agree to comply with their demands
and ideals, has been a controversial hot-
button topic in recent years, drawing
criticism for its inhumane nature.
Americans took heat for their use of
it in Guantanamo Bay. Justice Antonin
Scalia spoke from the bench, stating that
although baptism the Christian rite
of passage in which one is submersed or
anointed in water and welcomed into the
church isnt necessarily used to extract
information from a person, it is still used
at times to force a set of ideals on a person
against their will. For this reason, he
said, it is only fair to treat it in the same
fashion.
Folly Residents To Be Awarded
One Fulligan Annually
FOLLY BEACH, SC--- Folly Beach
Mayor Tim Goodwin announced this
morning that all registered residents of the
island will receive one (1) Folly Mulligan,
or Fulligan, at the beginning of each
calendar year. Te Fulligan will allow
Folly citizens a screw-up of sorts. For
example, lets say someone gets too drunk
and has to be carried home, cursing out
everyone along the way. He/she could use
their Fulligan and all judgement would be
reserved. Itd be like nothing happened.
Or lets say you walk out of the bar, run
into a step and face-plant on the sidewalk,
scarring the face for weeks. Use your
Fulligan and it all goes away. He further
explained that the Fulligan can only be
used once and citizens are not allowed to
stockpile them if others dont feel the need
to use them.
Locals Decide Missing Man
Not Actually Missing If
No One Really Misses Him
FOLLY BEACH, SC--- A poll conducted
over the 4
th
of July weekend of area Folly
Beach citizens showed that a stunning 82%
say a missing man is not a missing man
if nobody actually misses him. Started as
a study to see what locals felt about area
simpleton, Alex Hunter, setting sail to
hunt down Bin Laden over a month and
a half ago, the poll results seem to have
called into question what it means to really
be missing. City Council announced all
milk carton and telephone pole ads using
Mr. Hunters likeness inquiring of his
whereabouts to be removed immediately.
Even those few close to Hunter seem to
corroborate the studies fndings. When
asked via email correspondence whether or
not he thinks Alex should be considered a
missing man, Andrew Krazny, longtime
friend and roommate of Mr. Hunter,
replied with the following: Alex left?

Whoopi Goldberg is set to reprise her role

T
hanks to ample amounts of
bait teeming in our waters,
fshing has been great so far
this summer. Te feeding switch
has defnitely been turned on. With
the summer seasonal species now all
present, there are no shortage of fsh
to target or ways to fsh for them. In
general, fshing has been best in the
morning with its cooler temperatures.
Redfsh, in particular, have been
making short work of any well-placed
bait. Make sure to bring your cast net
along and catch some menhaden or
fnger mullet. Weve been having the
most success around docks or other
structures while fshing live baits on
a Carolina rig. Make sure to use a
heavy-enough weight to hold the bait
stationary, otherwise your rig will tumble
along the bottom until it snags.
Trout have really reemerged over the
last few weeks. Its great to see that the
trout stock was not hurt too badly by our
cold winter. Anglers should stick with one
of the tried and true methods for catching
trout: the popping cork. A live shrimp
or mud minnow is a hard treat to refuse
when it comes foating by right in a trouts
strike zone. Make sure to lift your cork
high and hard enough so it makes that
clacking sound.
Anglers targeting founder have been
reporting good numbers. Try fshing
fnger mullet along the bottom around
structures. Move the bait slowly and
when you think you have a bite wait a
few seconds (if you can) before setting
the hook. Weve been picking up quite a
few founder with mud minnows under a
popping cork as well.
All of our seasonal species can be
caught using the tactics listed above. My
favorite summer-time fsh is the ladyfsh.
Tese dynamic fsh will smack shrimp
under a popping cork and make your drag
zing. Teir acrobatic jumps and hard runs
make these fsh so entertaining. Look for
them in some of the same spots that you
fnd trout.
Fly fshing has also been quite good.
While we have been seeing the most
numbers of redfsh when on the fats at low
tide, they have been eating the best while
in the grass. Te copperhead fy, a local
favorite, has been producing consistently.
Make sure that your fies have a good
weed guard so you dont get hung up all
the time.
See you on the water!

W
ouldnt it be nice to begin
a summer movie recap
overwhelmed, in the midst of
the best movie summer ever? Id love to
say that this year is at least better than last,
but unfortunately, not much has changed.
Nevertheless, there is some interesting fare
in those cool, dark theaters. Just like the
summer of 2010, there is a wide variety of
blockbuster feature flms and small indie
ficks that run the spectrum from Iron
Man 2 and Inception to Get Low and Te
Kids Are All Right. And like last year,
there is something for everyone. Blame it
on our taste or laziness in Hollywood, but
not much stands apart from the rest. Still,
there have been some surprises.
Fortunately, the summer is not over
yet. As the heat increases in August, many
will be seeking refuge in our cool homes
or the air-conditioned theaters. With this
in mind, here is a handy guide to whats
hot and whats not. Ive pegged some great
ideas for rentals. Last, Im highlighting
some buzz-worthy flms soon to premier
in theaters right here.
Super 8
Super 8, directed by J.J. Abrams and
produced by Steven Spielberg, is a fun ride
for the pre-teen audience, but for my price
of admission, lacks the heart to make it
this generations E.T.
Te nostalgia is thick as the flm opens
in the summer of 1979, in a small Ohio
town. A group of friends work together
creating a super 8 movie, but soon become
witnesses to a disastrous train crash.
Unbeknownst to the group of friends, the
camera keeps rolling. Te group suspects
that this train wreck was no accident.
Over the next few days, strange things
begin to happen in the small towndogs
and people disappear at an alarming pace,
and objects fying through the air like
dangerous projectiles. Soon the small
town is overfowing with military police,
causing even more angst for the terrifed
residents.
Focusing on this tight-knit group
of friends, their interactions and their
chemistry, theres an underlying sense that
this flm never reaches its true potential. I
wanted to get up and go watch Goonies or
Stand by Me, movies that had it all plot,
great characters, camaraderie,
and warmth. Tey deserve their
rankings as timeless classics! Yes,
this flm is very reminiscent of
Spielbergs earlier works, but at
every turn, it falls just a bit short.
Te magic fades quickly, leaving
us with an uninspired vision of
what someone or something used
to be. What truly put the nail
in the cofn for me was all the
build-up and hypethe hype
was its downfall! Disappointment.
My favorite part of Super 8 was the
end, when the audience gets to see the
super 8 zombie movie the kids had been
working on earlier, before all the trauma
of the train wreck and catastrophes. Te
Case, as it was called, plays out over the
closing credits and is so funny and so
well done, that it out performs its multi-
million-dollar predecessor.
TranSformerS: Dark of The moon
Transformers: Dark of the Moon has
again fallen prey to Michael Bays inability
to tell a cohesive story, but all hail his
CGI/3-D eye! Tis flm is nothing
but a visceral experience. As
an audience member, it is
really difcult to look for
anything more.
Consider this run down of
the stellar plot-- Shia LaBeouf
returns as Sam Witwicky, bringing
nothing new to the table. Optimus and
Megatron are at it again. We meet a
new Autobot named Sentinel (voiced by
Leonard Nimoy). Tere is a super secret
government project which is run by
the bossy Frances McDormand. Were
introduced to a new super-sexy leading
lady who is a set of lips and legs with no
acting ability, Rosie Huntington-Whitley
(exactly how Bay likes his leading ladies).
A huge bot battle ensues which turns
downtown Chicago into rubble and Sam
Witwicky is somehow in command of the
U.S. military and its fght to save the world
against bot domination. Whew, now that
was easy, but somehow this flm goes on
for two and a half hours! Go fgure!
Again, we are faced with the hype that
outpaced the actual product, and again
Spielberg is in the producer role. Are we
seeing a trend this summer? I think so! We
are not going to see movies to experience
them as a complete story, but to say we
saw it. Where is plot development? Where
is emotion and meaning?
Yes, T3 is visually super cool. Te world
Bay creates is as well-defned as the
vision in Avatar, but when did
we as audience members
make the decision that
visuals, graphics, and
ear-numbing sound are
all that matters in flm? No
battle scene or super cool graphics
could stave the boredom I felt less

than an hour into this fick.
At the end of the day, you are forced to
shell out $12 to see this lackluster flm because
what is selling has to be seen on the biggest
screen possible with the best digital audio.
T3 will do nothing for you on the small
screen. Tis is not a flm you can pick-up at
Redbox and enjoy on a hot afternoon in your
cool living room. Yes, you can marvel at its
grotesque enormity, but I am sorry to say, no
CGI/3-D/IMAX experience can make up
for a meaningless plot.
Larry Crowne
In a state where educations importance
isnt always at the forefront, Tom Hanks
reminds us of what a good class can do
for ones soul. Directed, co-written and
produced by Americas male sweetheart,
Tom Hanks creates something simple for
us in Larry Crowne.
Yes, I am fully aware that I fell pray to
Hollywoods marketing angle, releasing
this light and fufy flm the same week as
Transformers: Dark of the Moon. We all
know the studio-marketing folks will do
anything to squeeze every ounce of attention
and every dollar out of
our collective wallets
or purses. Just as
long as youre aware
of what these master
manipulators are doing
during the summer
time, I say, get your big
purse out, cram it full of cheap homemade
goodies, and enjoy everything that
Hollywood has to ofer!
Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is a pleasant,
kind everyday man working at a big box
store. Employee of the month nine times
running, Crowne is shocked when he is
suddenly fred due to his lack of education.
Like many today undereducated, middle
aged, falling behind on the mortgage and
unclear about how to start over Crowne
heads to his local college. Tere he creates
strong relationships with a cast of lively
misfts, but more importantly, develops
a crush on his public speaking teacher,
Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), who is
passionate about her daily margaritas and
not much else.
Yes, this flm is like watching YouTube
videos of babies and puppies; you smile
ear to ear from start to fnish, but isnt that
why we go see flms? To be whisked away
to a time and place where things are more
simple, clear and yes, cutesy! It is gently
to the point of blandness, but its never
unconvincing. Tere is a simple truth
that speaks throughout this flm, and I
found it refreshing and all too cogent. Te
importance of education and the need for
human connections shouldnt be lost on
any of us.
Tom Hanks and
Julia Roberts are
timeless as actors; two
veterans who truly
enjoy one another as
people, and it is that
chemistry that makes
this flm so much fun to watch. In a
world of CGI overkill, Larry Crowne is
a refreshingly simple tale that reminds
us that it is never too late to learn, to
change and to grow.
winnie the Pooh
Walt Disney Animation Studios
returns to the Hundred Acre Wood
with Winnie the Pooh, and it feels
like we never left! Featuring the
timeless magic, humor and whimsy
of the originals we all grew up watching,
listening to or reading to others, this new
movie is nostalgic and quite a fun romp.
Te flm reunites us with our favorite
silly bear, Pooh, and his friends Tigger,
Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo and
my all time favorite, Eeyore. Listening
to our favorite narrator, we turn the frst
page and are quickly whisked away to
the beautiful English countryside of the
Hundred Acre Wood. Pooh is just waking
up and already on the hunt for, what you
might ask? Honey to be exact! And just
like the Pooh we all remember and love,
he sets aside his own needs to help a friend
in need -- Eeyore has lost his tail.
Bringing the whole gang together to
help with this simple task, it soon turns
into a diferent type of mystery that has
Piglet shaking in his pink-stitched fuf. Not
surprisingly, Owl misconstrues a note from
Christopher Robin and soon sends the gang
on an adventurous, wild goose chase.
Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall,
who co-directed this flm, stay true to the
heart and art of our favorite watercolor
Pooh and does not allow todays ideas of
animation to ruin the
timeless, classic look and
feel of the originals. Tey prove
that flmmakers of today are still skilled
enough to treat children and childhood
with the utmost respect and poise.
Another simple tale that does what
others couldnt this summer; it had barely
any build-up and has outshined any hype
that surrounded it.
Winnie the Pooh is a fabulous flm
that will remind adults that Pooh never
left our hearts. Tis flm simply and
poignantly introduces Pooh to a whole
new generation! (Be sure to stay through
the character-ridden creditsthe real
ending comes directly after!)

grade. Tis flm tries too hard to be funny,
and while it has potential, it never gets
genuine laughs.
Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz) is a morally
bankrupt teacher whose dream is to fnd
someone rich to take care of her. Oh, how
I wished that the humor would wrap her
like it did in Teres Something About
Mary, but it doesnt. In Bad Teacher, Diaz
will let nothing stand in the way. I would
love to say there is more to this flm, but
due to the shallow plot and a sloppily
written screenplay, there is not much left
for the talented cast to hold onto. Te
schools staf is populated with a colorful
range of characterssome actually quite
funny. But their roles seem to be to fll
in the gaps between shots of Diaz being
high, drunk or almost naked.
Tere is redeeming value to this sad
attempt at comedy. Tere are two shining
lights in this flm Jason Segal and John
Michael Higgins (Best in Show). Segal is
the gym teacher and the only seemingly
normal teacher at the school. When he is
on screen defecting Elizabeths putdowns
with a quiet ease, he gives you the illusion
you are watching a much better flm then
you really are. Higgins plays the schools
principal, Wally Snur. Tis veteran actor
is a joy to watch and nothing less than
perfect in his role.
I see where Kasdan was trying to go
with this flm, taking a traditional fgure
of the kind, well-intentioned school
teacher and turning her into a drunken
mess who fnds redemption, but it just
doesnt work. Kasdan should have gone
back and re-watched Terry Zwigofs Bad
Santa (2003) to see how this idea is pulled
of properly.
As it stands, Bad Teacher would have
worked better as a three-minute skit on
SNL not a feature flm. Too bad all the
way aroundthe movie might have had
legs, but they never went walking. Its a
case of heat exhaustion.
HORRIBLE BOSSES
Ever fantasize about murdering your
boss? Tis fantasy becomes reality for
three hassled employees in this summers
semi-dark comedy, Horrible Bosses.
Unfortunately, director Seth Gordon
didnt edit as well as he could have. Te
flm feels more congested then funny.
Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason
Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day) all have
one glaring problem in their seemingly
normal lives: their intolerable bosses,
(Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer
Aniston). Quitting is not an option, so
after a night of drinking, these three
friends hop into their car, ask their On
Star representative for directions to the
worst bar in town and begin their search
for a hit man. Like many of their plans
throughout this flm, the search for a hit
man doesnt quite work out. But they do
stumble upon some advice from a hustling
ex-con (Jamie Foxx) whose name--and
the story of how he received it--could be
a movie in and of itself. Tey now think
they have a plan that is foolproof--rid
themselves of their employers. Tings
start to unravel at a frenzied pace.
I found two major issues with this
flm that held it back from what could
have been cult classic status. First, the
congested feeling that the flm had due to
the lack of editing. Seth Gordon packed
this flm so full of jokes, one-liners and
semi-obscure pop culture references that
it felt like you were sufocating. As you
began to laugh and enjoy, the movie blew
past you into a new scene.
Second, the fact that Gordon didnt go
as dark and disturbing as he could have
was a let down. Te audience is inundated
with scenes of death, sexual abuse, drug
abuse and a barrage of vulgar dialogue
that would put any sailor to shame, but
was served up as cozy comedy rather than
anything more signifcant.
Of course, the performances are
what save the day due to the exceptional
casting. You can never go wrong with
Jason Bateman and Kevin Spacey, but a
cast alone does not a cult flm make.
HARRY POTTER AND THE
DEATHLY HOLLOWS, PART II
In the 10 years since we began our
journey with Harry, Hermione and Ron
the spell has never been broken, and I
can gladly say that Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hollows Part II brings an
emotional and brilliant ending to this
decade-long adventure. I and Muggles
alike are sad to see such a wonderful story
come to an end.
In the epic fnale, the battle between
good and evil escalates to an all-out war.
No one is safe, and everyone must choose
a side; sacrifces will be made and lives will
be lost, but it is Harry Potter who may
be asked to make the ultimate sacrifce.
Questions are answered and lives are
altered forever as Potter pushes himself
closer to the climactic showdown with
Lord Voldemort, where it will all come to
an end.
Every time a flm in this series is
released, we are all reminded that the cast
is phenomenalacross the board. From
the three best friends, Daniel Radclife,
Emma Watson and Rupert Grint to
the brilliant Ralph Fiennes (Dark Lord
Voldemort) to the unyielding severity of
Alan Rickman (Severus Snape) the cast is
so right, so tight and so in tune with the
plot. Te entire cast deserves a standing
ovation for portraying each character with
utter brilliance and respect. What a truly
beautiful cast to watch grow and change
over the years. It has been a wonderful
journey.
But, like anything, it has its faws. I was
truly content throughout the entire flm,
and as I watched the three friends join
hands and look out towards the future, I
felt complete and glad to see the flm fade
to black. About to remove my 3-D glasses,
I noticed the words start to form and it
read 19 years later. I began to worry.
**Spoiler alert, stop
reading if you dont
want to know the
end.**
Everyone is
married with his or
her own children,
and they are busy
getting their children
ready to board the
train to Hogwarts.
Te problem is
that it was not
executed well. I
started to hear
some twitters of
laughter in the
theatre. Te
actors barely
aged. Teir
baggy adult
clothes and
some extra
crows feet around the eyes seemed to be
it. It was awkward and poorly executed.
Personally, I have decided to ignore
that portion of the flm because the rest of
it was a magical, dazzling journey that I
loved watching and growing with over the
years. Harry Potter and his epic adventure
will go down in history, and like the fnal
words of the book, All was well.
BUZZ WORTHY
Te Help, directed by Tate Taylor,
starring Emma Stone and Viola Davis.
Tis is a beautiful and tough story based
in Mississippi during the 1960s. An
unlikely friendship blossoms around
a secret writing project which pushes
societal rules and puts these courageous
ladies in jeopardy. Te buzz around this
flm is electric and needs to be on your
must see list!
Te Guard, directed by John Michael
McDonagh, starring Don Cheadle
and Brendan Gleeson. Tis mystery-
suspense-comedy follows an eccentric
Irish policeman with a challenging
personality who is teamed up with a
tense FBI agent and their investigation
into an international drug-smuggling
ring. Tis flm has tons of positive chatter
around it and after viewing the trailer it
has skyrocketed to my must see list right
beside Te Help! Critics agree that it is
superbly directed and sharply written.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes, directed by
Rupert Wyatt, starring a reliable cast from
James Franco to Frieda Pinto, seems like it
might have potential. With Tim Burtons
failed attempt at this idea already, I am a
bit wary, but the previews make it appear
to have promise.
Attack the Block, directed by Joe
Cornish. Tis flm is from the producers
of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Attack the Block follows a gang of rough
inner-city kids who set out on a journey to
defend their South London neighborhood
from an alien invasion. Te critics and
the online chatter are charged, but the
outcome is unknown.
RELEASES ON DVD
Hesher, directed by Spencer Susser,
stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Tis flm had
limited release, and just like Kaiser Soze,
it disappeared from theatrical release.
Gordon-Levitt is one of my all-time favorite
actors, and this role seems nothing short of
amazing! Hesher is into loud music, porn
and burning things to the ground, and he
brings his interesting anarchist take to a
family in need. Tis family will be shaken
to their core, but in a way that will open
their eyes to so much more. Will this flm
speak to everyone? No!

Rio, directed by Carlos Saldanha,
starring a barrage of actors, is an
animated flm I cannot believe I missed!
From the makers of Ice Age comes Rio.

adventurous journey to Rio de Janeiro to

Arthur, directed by Jason Winer and
starring Russell Brand, is a fresh take on
Dudley Moores 1981 flm of the same
name. It did not fare well with the critics,
but we are not all analytical Nazis. So
this would be a great $1 DVD to pick
up and enjoy in the comfort of your air
conditioned home with a couple of close
friends. Sometimes its nice not to take
things so seriously and just sit back, be
silly and have a good laugh.
Rango, directed by Gore Verbinski,
starring the lovely Johnny Depp, is a movie
I have already reviewed, but I wanted to
remind everyone that if you missed it in
the theatres, to catch it on DVD. Rango
is a smart, lightheartedly creative burst of
stunning animated entertainment about a
sheltered household
pet thrust into an unknown world--
another excellent flm for the entire family
to enjoy.
Limitless, directed by Neil Burger,
starring Bradley Cooper, is a mystery-
suspense, sci-f thriller that received
decent reviews and could make for an
adventurous evening for the right viewer.
Although the script was a bit sketchy,
Burger directs with plenty of visual fair.

Summer Love
Well, summer movies tend to be like
summer romancesvapid, without
substance, and often are in Shakespeares
words, much ado about nothing. Tis
summer tends to not be bucking that
trend. Te box ofce has been soothed

Although previous eforts to
ban drinking have faded away, the
support of the Surfrider Foundation
gives this group added credence.
Charleston Surfrider Chapter Chair
Marty Morganellos primary issue is
with littering, a problem that he sees
stemming from people getting drunk
and then not really caring about the
ramifcations of what they do.
Once people go out there and get
drunk, they lose all respect for the
beach and for the residents of the island,
and it just snowballs from there, says
Morganello. Its obvious that the other
beaches around here that dont allow
drinking dont have the problems that
we have on Folly.
Morganello also voices concern about
the Beach Management Patrol giving
out cups on the beach, questioning that
the practice exacerbates the problem.
He recalls a group he spotted on a recent
Saturday, taking turkey baster shots at
noon.
Nothing good is ever going to come
of that, says Morganello. Folly Beach
used to be referenced as the laid back,
surfer, hippie community. Its anything
but that now. Its just party central every
weekend on the beach.
Adam Webb, organizer of the
Charleston Bocce League that meets on
Folly each Tuesday, feels that the issues
are respect and litter, and that banning
drinking isnt a cure-all.
When it comes to people urinating
outside, that might come down to a
need for more public facilities, says
Webb, who says his club regularly cleans
the beach around where they play. He
says hes seen a families dump their
coolers on the beach, leaving sandwich
bags and food wrappers in a pile with
their melting ice. I cant tell you how
many times weve found empty water
bottles on the beach. I dont think its a
fair correlation, that ending drinking is
going to end the litter problem.
On the B4aSaferFolly Facebook page,
Hutto has strategized with supporters
about how to accomplish their goals,
including maintaining the page as a
secret group so that only members can
read posts or even know the group exists
(Te Folly Current was invited to join).
Some people are actually wary of
being identifed as being part of a group
who is working to ban alcohol, because
they fear they will be targeted in some
way, either by the beer business interests,
or by the very rowdy day visitors we will
be forcing to go drink elsewhere, wrote
Hutto on the page.
Hutto worries on the B4aSaferFolly
page that if the decision goes to the
public, and not to council, that the
results could be unfavorable to their
cause.
Given that chance, he writes, if we
put it to a popular vote, and it loses, then
I think it will determine the future of
the island for possibly the next decade,
and the situation in the neighborhood
will worsen even more.

L
iving in South Carolina for the past
ten years, I have found myself in
some pretty incredulous dialogues
and debates. Incredulous because,
anywhere outside of South Carolina
(and the rest of the Deep South for that
matter), there may not be cause for such
discussions.
For instance, ask anyone from west of
El Paso and north of the Mason/Dixie
line and a great majority will tell you;
No. NASCAR is not a sport. Cars going
around in circles really fast contributing
to the slow death of our ozone layer isnt a
sport. Its a travesty!
Ask any elementary school student
from Seattle, Washington to Madawaska,
Maine and theyll tell you; Of course the
Civil War ended. And yes. Te Confederate
side lost. Elvis is in fact more dead than
the dinosaur, grits are not an actual food
group and really; theres no e in biscuits
and gravy!
But lately, Ive found myself amazed
and stupefed by yet another popular belief
that could only pass for truth here in a state
that has no problem slashing its education
budget almost in half but sees nothing
wrong with reserving millions of tax
dollars just in case the state has to foot the
bill to keep a second tier golf tournament
that it hosts going for another year.
Te issue came up the other night as
a couple of friends and I were sitting on
the deck of a Folly Beach rental house.
As most conversations do in the south, it
started with a yell.
OOO! Gross! GROSS! Teres a
cockroach! A cockroach! my friend
panicked, leaping to her feet, and pointing
to a nearby railing.
Tats not a cock-roach. Tats a
Palmetto Bug. our other friend
piped in.
A what?! our
visiting friend from
Indiana inquired.
A Palmetto Bug.
our friend, a Charleston
native, replied.
Our Hoosier friend looked over to me,
puzzled. Its a cockroach. I said, rolling
my eyes and shaking my head.
No, its not. the Charleston native
attempted to correct, and so ensued a
friendly disagreement on whether or not a
Palmetto Bug is actually a cockroach.
She began to plead her case by
informing me that Palmetto Bugs were
found only in South Carolina and werent
considered roaches because they could
actually fy. I retorted by informing my
dear misinformed friend that I myself
had seen the very same type of roach
everywhere from the Great State of Texas
to the swamplands better known as
Florida, and that not only could they fy,
but could also carry a few passengers and
have a better on-time-arrival rating than
most major airlines. She then proceeded
to defend them by saying that they were
harmless.
As I wiped the beer of the lap of my
Indiana friend, who had just uncontrollably
spat it out upon hearing such a far-fetched
statement, I reminded them both of the
over 32 infectious diseases (including
E.Coli) roaches, such as her
beloved Palmetto Bug,
have been known
to transport. Not
to mention the
few instances
where roaches,
especially the
b i g g e r type, have been
known to nibble on humans while we
sleep, when in areas where there exists a
larger population of roaches than there is
food available for them to eat.
Okay. Now youre just making stuf
up! she said, sucking her teeth at me.
No. Im not. I said. Google it
if you must. Or just ask any friendly,
neighborhood exterminator like I did. I
encouraged her. Hes just making that
up. she said turning to our other friend,
blowing me of.
Look, I said. just because you give
it a charming little name, doesnt mean
its not a gruesome, infectious-disease-
carrying roach. Te Palmetto Bug, as
adorable as that may sound, is nothing
more than an over-sized American
cockroach. A cockroach! A bug? A bug
is a bubbly little rounded automobile
created by the people over at Volkswagen.
I know. Ive seen them. My friend Arica
has one. Almost as cute and adorable as
she is, but thats not the point. Te point
is, Bugsy Malone wasnt a cartoon rabbit.
Baby Face Nelson really wasnt a baby. And
the Palmetto Bug? Tats right Virginia
its a freakin cockroach. Period.
With my Charleston friend fnally
conceding like General Lee at Appomattox,
she folded her arms, glaring over at me.
Joel, why do you hate South Carolina
so much? Again, I had to correct her.
Are you nuts? I love South Carolina!
Tere are two things I love doing more
than anything else in this world; Laughing
and making myself look smarter than I
really am and no where else in this great,
green, globe of ours do I get more of
an opportunity at doing both than right
here in this kooky, ack-bassward state.
And, in great abundance, I might add!
Youre such a dumb-ass. she said,
sipping on her mojito.
Tat may very well be true... I
admitted but the Palmetto Bug? Its a
roach. I mumbled under my breath,
grinning, just before being slapped on the
back of my head by the open palm of her
one non-mojito holding hand.
My, my, my. How I do love me these
Southern Women folk.

n July 18, Te Seashore Farmers Lodge Museum and Cultural Center at
Sol Legare held its annual commemoration of the 54th Massachusetts
siege on Fort Wagner, the infamous battle portrayed in the 1989 flm,
Glory. Te 54th Massachusetts Companies I and B were present, along with the
women of the 54th - all were dressed in historically accurate attire and shared
stories from the past.
Folly Beach Mayor, Tim Goodwin was present for the ceremonies, as well as
many community members and infuential people, including Michael Allen of the
NPS and Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor and Queen Quet, Chieftess of the
Gullah Geechee nation.
After a series of historical skits and dramatic soliloquies detailing their fnal
moments, the troops marched down Old Sol Legare Road and boarded a boat to
continue the 148th anniversary ceremony on Morris Island, all that is left of what
was once mighty Fort Wagner.
Te 54th Massachusetts Co I, headed by Joseph McGill, is already preparing for the
sesquicentennial of the infuential battle to be held in 2013. For more information or
how to become involved, contact the museum by emailing Corie Hipp at sollegare@

Good words
One of these nights I will fnd a frefy and swallow it whole, maybe then you
can see my soul. A true pure luminescent glow, anyone can come to this free
show.
At this high point, during times of many, I open my eyes, and like a net, I
cast them over the river. Along with all my worries. Righteous views in sets of
twos.
Glorious emotions. Friends in the threshold sit around a bonfre. Spirits talk
about thinking unknowingly, just some form of truth. Late, lazy poetic words
crash on the paper like Folly waves.
Content and Confused.
I dont know. I dont worry. Just take me to the place of good rains and sprouting
seeds. Somewhere in this upcommin world, where people share the same energy.
Sometimes the magnetic felds connect them - my method of choice.
Other times its up to the individual to go on a self-exploration journey.
Ill take you into this path where plants grow and skies shatter. Raindrops left
behind solely for a good cause. Im trying to pass poetry and music of to my
friends like its a joint. I dunno, I guess now I must discover something chronic,
like this sun falling under a purple cloud.

IntroduCtIon to the outsIde
A door opened with one wave of the arm. Walking into a land where you become
king of the fddler crabs playing their fddles. Right next to those raccoons on
the bank wearing coonskin hats, sittin on stumps, eating my lunch. Animals
are Cannibals. Look at those dirty pigs playing football, and those cows sittin
on hay stacks drinking chocolate milk, laughing and cheering with their glass
bottles. Lets go to the chicken coop where mother hen comes up wearing an
apron and holding a frying pan. She asks us how we want our eggs cooked.

T
he Whimbrel is one
of the largest ranging
shorebirds in the
world.
Winters are spent along the
coasts of North America and
South America while summers
are spent in the Arctic.
Whimbrels have very distinct
long, down-curved bills used
to probe deep in the sand for
invertebrates. In many regions,
the primary winter food of the
Whimbrel eat crab, the
curve of the bill matching the
shape of fddler crab burrows.
Te bird reaches into the crabs
burrow, extracts, washes,
and sometimes breaks of the
claws and legs before fnally
swallowing it. Tey are also
known to eat insects, berries
and fowers during the summer
breeding season.
Currently, the greatest
threat to the species is loss of
coastal wetland habitat and
environmental contamination.
Tis Whimbrel was spotted
in the marsh across from the
Sandcastle Restaurant - looks
like he had a change of heart
and decided to spend the
summer in the Lowcountry.
