Heritage Days has far sur-
passed the expectations of the
crew at the Agricultural Society
this year. This was the frst year
Darcy Ledene has been the gen-
eral manager of the society, and
even he was impressed with how
much better everything went.
The weekend went unreal,
better than ever expected. It blew
away my expectations, my team
of volunteers, my staff, they out-
did themselves to say the least,
said Ledene.
We were very, very happy. Ev-
eryone involved put on an awe-
some show and its something to
be very, very proud of.
He said the great weather def-
nitely would have been a contrib-
uting factor to the success of the
annual show, but past that, it is
tough to put his fnger on. Heri-
tage Days was so successful this
year that the show sold out on
Saturday.
All the rush seating sold out,
all the grandstand sold out by
three in the afternoon. Thats
a phenomenal day for us, and
were just happy with the sup-
port that the community and
everyone brought to the event,
said Ledene.
He said there are a few things
they will tweak a little for next
years rodeo, but nothing major.
Ledene said the midway did even
better than expected and are in-
terested in returning. Everyone
on the Encana stage had a great
time, and the hospitality that the
volunteers provided was fabu-
lous.
Ledene also wanted to express
his thanks and appreciation to all
of the different people, organiza-
tions and fans that helped make
Heritage Days what it was.
Without fans, without contes-
tants, without sponsor, without
volunteers its not an event what-
soever, said Ledene.

The Town recently began operating the newly constructed wastewater
treatment plant. The new plant a state of the art facility, with a higher
capacity that will accommodate growth in the town for years to come,
and has signifcantly improved the quality of the waste water discharged
to the Bow River. The Town was obligated to meet a higher environmen-
tal standard, imposed by the Alberta government. As a result of the new
plant, bio solids are extracted from the system and require disposal.
The disposal of the bio solids has become a challenging and a costly
effort; currently in the $6,000.00 per week range. The Town is currently
looking at alternatives to reduce the cost of the disposal.
Additionally, the budget for the 2011 sewer program is $4,875,000.00,
which covers the cost of operating the plant.

The Town constructed a waterline from Calgary to supply high quality
water to the community, which was completed in 2010. A substantial
portion of this project was funded through a provincial grant, however,
the Town was responsible to fund approximately 13% of the total cost of
the $53,000,000 project. In addition, the cost of the water was increased
by the supplier, (the City of Calgary), at the beginning of the 2011 year.
The Town is required to repair and replace obsolete and aging water
distribution infrastructure, and additionally, to provide new
infrastructure to accommodate the growth of the town.

strange Laws
In Alabama, it is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while driving a vehicle!
(I would think that would be illegal everywhere)!
In London, it is illegal to fag down a taxi if you have the plague.
(Not sure why youd be out and about fagging down taxis. but ok)!
In Florida, an unmarried woman who parachutes on a Sunday is liable to be jailed.
(Perhaps parachuting Monday Saturday is the way to go,
if you dont want to get married)!
A backpack; Look for
something durable, water-resistant,
easy to open and close, and
comfortable (dont saddle your
kindergartner with a backpack
designed to lug high school history
books, for instance). A backpack
adorned with faddish characters
wont age as well as a generic
pack in your childs favorite color.
A safety reminder: Dont label your
childs name on his backpack,
where every stranger can see it,
but do be sure to include a nametag
of some kind inside.
A lunchbox or bag; Make sure
its water-resistant, easy to open
and close, and roomy enough to
ft a drink, a sandwich, and small
containers for fruit and other
snacks. For kids this age, skip
thermoses that require pouring,
instead use fip-top water bottles or
juice boxes.
Lunch supplies; Stock up on
individual serving sizes of healthy
lunch foods and snacks, such as
unsweetened apple sauce, mini
boxes of raisins, string cheese,
and 100 percent juice boxes. And
dont forget to have on hand plenty
of sandwich bags, small plastic
containers, and aluminum foil.
Cubby items; If your childs
kindergarten has a daily quiet
time, fnd out whether you need
to provide a mat, and let your child
pick out a small blanket or sleeping
bag and pillow. If the school
allows items from home, pack your
childs comfort object (provided its
portable) to help calm his frst-day
jitters, and a change of clothes for
those inevitable muddy days on the
playground.
A new outft; New clothes make
going to school an event. Dont
forget to check last years rain
boots and coat for ft, and buy new
ones if you need to.
Project supplies Though its
a little early for homework, your
child may be asked to do a few
projects during the year (with
your assistance, of course), and
hell almost certainly want to
practice his new cutting, gluing,
and coloring skills at home. So be
sure to stock up on pencils, paper,
scissors, and other school supply
essentials.

Mischief to downtown businesses
On July 28, at approximately 2:45 a.m.,
Strathmore RCMP were dispatched to a res-
idence on Park Lane Place. The residence
had suffered a broken window when a rock
was thrown from Park Lane Drive. Later
that morning, between the hours of 4:00
a.m. and 4:30 a.m., Strathmore RCMP were
dispatched to Downtown Strathmore where
multiple businesses were also vandalized
in a similar fashion. The businesses on 2nd
Avenue were also vandalized by rocks be-
ing thrown through windows. The vandalism
started with the Strathmore Court building
and continued east down 2nd Avenue. Mul-
tiple fst-sized rocks were used; some of the
windows were broken and others cracked.
Strathmore RCMP are looking from assis-
tance from anyone that may have seen any-
thing suspicious in the area.
If person(s) have any information regard-
ing this or similar occurrences please con-
tact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-
800-222-8477) or the Strathmore RCMP at

drug trafficking
On July 1, at approximately 10:30 p.m.,
Strathmore RCMP and Wheatland EMS re-
sponded to a residence in Strathmore after
receiving a complaint of an unconscious
male suffering from a possible drug over-
dose. A 19-year-old male was removed
from the residence and transported to the
Foothills Hospital by STARs Air Ambulance
for treatment and was released the follow-
ing day.
After a several week investigation, the
Strathmore RCMP charged Christopher
Prowse (20) of Strathmore with traffcking
a controlled substance, namely Psilocybin
(Magic Mushrooms). The RCMP allege the
19-year-old male consumed a large quan-
tity of the Psilocybin, sold to him by Prowse
prior to going into medical distress. Prowse
is scheduled to appear in Strathmore Pro-
vincial Court in September 2011.
scooter theft
Sometime between 6 p.m. on July 27 and
3 p.m. on July 28, a blue electric scooter
was stolen from the alley behind 2nd Av-
enue in Strathmore. The scooter is owned
by an elderly citizen who suffers from health
problems and it is his only mode of trans-
portation. The Strathmore RCMP are looking
for assistance from the public in locating
this scooter or for any information regarding
this theft.
The scooter is described as missing the
right armrest, has a black wire basket and
has duct tape on the footrest portion.
If you have any information regarding
this, please contact the Strathmore RCMP at
403-934-3968 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-
222-TIPS.

The plights of human traf-
fcking and exploitation are not
just an international problem,
which is something the Hope
Community Covenant Church
is hoping to shed light on with
their conference Justice Tapes-
try.
There will be a number of vi-
sual works and performances
throughout the conference by
various artists, which runs from
Aug. 27 - 28. The events sub-
title is, Shedding Light on the
Atrocities of Human Traffck-
ing and Exploitation Seek-
ing Gods Heart and Our Re-
sponse.
The conference is designed
to bring together southern Al-
bertans who are concerned for
justice, and to empower them
to both stand against injustice,
and care for the victims.
Mark Wollenberg with the
International Justice Mission
Canada (IJM) will deliver the
keynote address.
Today, most of us live with-
out the knowledge that there
are approximately 27 million
slaves in the world. Most peo-
ple do not know that there are
more slaves in the world today
than the 1800s, when slaves
were ripped out of Africa in the
trans-Atlantic slave trade, said
Wollenberg in a press release.
These are people who are
forced to work in cocoa and
coffee plantations, brick kilns
and rice mills, or in brothels
and they have no option to
leave. They are literally owned
by someone else who sees
them as a source of revenue for
themselves. After drug dealing,
human traffcking is tied with
the illegal arms industry as the
second largest illegal enterprise
in the world today.
Wollenberg continued on to
say there are people today who
need an advocate, someone to
raise their voice on behalf of
those who are voiceless.
In February Andrew Koomans
play, She has a Name was
shown at the EPCOR Centre in
Calgary, delivering a haunting
tale of prostitute called Num-
ber 18, a 15-year-old girl forced
to work in a brothel in Bang-
kok. The performance gripped
the hearts of those who had a
chance to see it, and brought
to light many of the real day-
to-day struggles these young
girls face, and the challenges to
those trying to rescue them.
I attended the conference
on traffcking that Raise Their
Voice organized in Red Deer as
a follow-up to She Has A Name
with several friends from my
hometown of Strathmore. It was
such a meaningful event that we
decided we needed to inform
and challenge our community
to stand up against slavery of
all kinds by hosting a similar
conference in Strathmore, said
Stephen Waldschmidt, director
of She has a Name.
Other presenters at the con-
ference will include Kooman,
Waldschmidt, Amie Gosselin
of Hager International, an af-
tercare and reintegration or-
ganization for victims of sex
traffcking and representatives
from Edmontons Centre to End
All Sexual Exploitation, Advo-
cacy for Victims of Abuse, Op-
portunity International, Ten
Thousand Villages, and several
local artists.
The conference will run from
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug.27 at
Hope Church, and there will
be a fnal gathering at 10 a.m.
on Aug. 28. Registration fees
are $35 for those who register
before Aug. 10, $40 by Aug. 24
or $45 at the door. For more

Times Reporter
Strathmore resident Judi Wilson has been an in-
tegral part of rodeo for years and a member of the
Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame board since 2005.
Her brother had been on the board of directors
and she had sat in on a few meetings over the
years. One day her brother called wanting her to
get on the board. At the time she was busy and just
kind of put it off until she received calls from other
members saying they would like her to run. In 2005
she did and was elected to the board. Wilson has
been a proud member of it ever since.
Every year we induct prominent names, people
that deserve to be remembered for their contribu-
tions to rodeo in the builder category, for the tal-
ents in the arena and thats a contestant category
and for the animals that make a name, whether
theyre dogging horses, roping horses, bareback
horses, bronc horses, bulls, said Wilson.
Every year there are seven names inducted into
the Hall of Fame, one animal and then six either
builders or contestants. One of the biggest things
the board has been working on is trying to fnd
a home in whick to display the commemorative
items. If its a contestant inducted the board will
be given chaps, or spurs or pictures, things that are
unique to their time in rodeo. They are displayed
in secured cases. That goal of fnding a home has
come to fruition when space became available in
Ponoka.
The board has been close to having a building
half a dozen times, but its never worked out be-
fore. Wilson said everything is almost ready, though
it will still be a year before the building opens. The
building offers close to 10,000 square feet of space,
and by being in Ponoka, Wilson said its in the cen-
tre of rodeo and ranching country and is the centre
of Alberta.
Wilson looks after the presentations for the rec-
ognition ceremonies for each and every inductee, a
total of 10 at all of the different rodeos.
In between all of that, she does interviews on the
inductees and on their travelling partners from the
past, creating a picture story on them to present on
DVD for the presentations in the fall.
At this Strathmore Heritage Days we did Donny
Jo (Johansen) on the Saturday, but then on Sunday
very near and dear to my heart was the Keith Sch-
neider Memorial, and so I did that one as well and
that went to Ray Stewart, said Wilson.
Thats an award that was designed by the rodeo
committee to honour those that have contributed to
what happens in this rodeo event. Keith was phe-
nomenal throughout all of his tenure as a mayor
and even after that.
Wilson said Schneider continued his support
even after his time as mayor, and would brag all
over the world about Heritage Days. Wilson said
Schneiders wife and daughters would be a part of
Heritage Days forever.
Blake Schlosser, one of the pick up guys, decid-
ed this was his last rodeo, so Wilson, on short no-
tice, contacted his family, got them to the grounds
in time to be a part of the ceremony recognizing
Schlossers time with the rodeo. Schlosser was sur-
prised and honoured to see his family there, who
mean the world to him. His family is part of the
reason why he is moving out of his role with the
rodeo. Schlosser said he has had his turn and now
it is time to go down the rodeo trail with his kids
and give them the opportunities that he had. Wil-
son said when Schlosser turned around and saw
his family it became an emotional moment for him.
Thats my reward, thats where I get my satisfac-
tion. I absolutely love putting our cowboys on that
pedestal that they so deserve. Thats why I do it,
said Wilson.
Its the history of rodeo and the guys, if it wasnt
for the Rodeo Hall of Fame theres going to be
people that fall through the cracks that nobodys
ever heard of. Its so important to remember where
all these young guys today started out from. It just
keeps evolving and evolving. We have to stay con-
nected to our past if were ever going to honour
our future, and thats what I love to do.
She said Donny Johansen was a prime example,
when he was shaking and choked full of emotion,
she realized then how important it is to someone
who has had successful career in rodeo to know
that they wont be forgotten about when they f-
nally leave the circuit.
Theres no greater satisfaction in the world then
seeing someone get emotional like that and know
how much it means to them. Thats why I do it,
thats the only reason why I do it,
She said if she didnt have the support of her
husband Bill she wouldnt be able to be a part of
it. Wilson said the other day someone told her she
should get an award for all her work and time, and
she told them that if someone ever thought about
it they should really give it to Bill. She does it be-
cause she is passionate about it, and he does it to
support her.

Shari Filipionek (r) was named the winner of the
Strathmores Got Talent competition July 27 at the
Strathmore Civic Centre, while Kirstyn Johnson was
second. Judi Wilson, organizer of the event, said it
was an incredible evening, everything ran smoothly
and the talent was amazing, as was the audience.
Filipionek wont be able to enter again next year as
she won frst place, but Wilson said she told Johnson
to make sure she comes back again next year.

The Tomorrow Project will be bring-
ing its mobile centre to Strathmore Au-
gust 8 to 11, allowing local residents a
chance to join the long-term research
study into the causes of cancer.
The reason is, were trying to under-
stand what causes cancer and so we
start with people who havent had can-
cer and we follow them through time,
said Dr. Elizabeth McGregor. McGregor
is an epidemiologist and a population
health researcher and is with Alberta
Health Services Cancer Care.
She said its called a cohort study and
they look at healthy people who have
never had cancer, have them fll out a
questionnaire, have body measurements
taken and give samples of blood and
urine. McGregor said they take all the
information and follow the people for
number of years because it is likely that
some of those people will eventually
develop a cancer. Researchers will then
compare those people to the ones who
didnt, and it will help them understand
who is more likely to develop a cancer.
The challenge for us is we have to
enroll a large number of people and
follow them for a long time, said Mc-
Gregor.
She said they might send a survey
to the participants every three to four
years, to see whats new and how things
are going. It is up to the participant if
they would like to complete the survey
or not.
So we are trying to enroll people
from across the province, we want to
enroll as many people from as diverse
a setting and from as many walks of life
as possible. So the goal for Alberta is
50,000. Were fortunate 13,000 have al-
ready enrolled so were looking for an-
other 37,000, said McGregor.
There are fxed study centres in Cal-
gary and Edmonton; however the mo-
bile centre goes to different parts of
the province, allowing easier access for
people to enroll.
Participants are needed for both the
study and to volunteer to be community
and project ambassadors, spreading the
word to friends and family in neigh-
bouring communities.
Though the centre will only be in
Strathmore a few days, people interest-
ed in taking part can go to the centre
in Calgary or call 1-877-919-9292 and
request to have a package sent out to
them with a questionnaire.
The mobile study centre will be at the
Strathmore Legion, #10, 230 2 Ave. Ap-
pointments are necessary and will take
about an hour.
Figures show almost half of all Alber-
tans will develop cancer in their lifetime
and one in four will die from the dis-
ease. In Alberta Health Services Calgary
zone, which includes Strathmore, about
7,800 people developed cancer in 2009,
the latest year for which full records are
available, and 1,840 died from the dis-
ease.
For information and to join the study,
visit www.in4tomorrow.ca and com-
plete the online form, or call toll-free
1-877-919-9292. Spaces are limited and
will be booked on a frst-in, frst-served
basis. Those wishing to participate are
encouraged to book appointments in
advance.

Back in 2007, Justin Carlson accept-
ed a dare and ran with the bulls at the
Strathmore Heritage Days Stampede.
Fast forward to 2011, and Carlsons
newfound obsession paid off when
he won the $1,000 top prize after Sat-
urday nights Running With the Bulls
event in front of the Agro Grandstand.
The frst time I did it was a bet,
which was four years ago, said Carl-
son, 23, of Strathmore. Then I loved
it so much Ive been back ever since.
Carlson almost didnt take part in
this years event at the urging of his
wife Amber, who recently gave birth
to the couples frst son Trevor.
She wasnt going to let me this year
because my son was just born, Carl-
son explained. Hes only three weeks
old, so she was like, No!. I managed
to talk her into it and thank God I
did.
Carlson gained the approval of the
sell-out crowd when he ran right in
front of one the bulls before taking a
couple horns to his chest and stom-
ach.
My stomachs a little sore, but Ill
live, said Carlson, who added his wife
deserved the prize money for support-
ing him. Well, shes got 1,000 bucks.
Jeff Thomsons wife Jessica also
wasnt too ecstatic that he ran with
the bulls for the second straight year.
Ive been looking forward to this
all year, said Thomson. Shes not too
thrilled, but she said that if it makes
me happy, she supports me.
Thomson, who stood out among
the other runners due to the Super-
man cape he was wearing, narrowly
avoided taking a horn to the backside
at one point during the event.
He gouged me in the arm, gouged
me in the leg. I got a couple licks in
this year, said the 40-year-old Calgar-
ian, who plans to take part again next
year.
Sunday nights edition of Running
With the Bulls attracted another feld
of 80 competitors including fve who
drove all the way from Niagra Falls,
Ont. The friends had car trouble on
the way out and had to pay $1,000 to
fx the transmission.
Perhaps it was only ftting that one
of the visiting thrill seekers named
James took home the top prize to help
pay for the repairs.

Last Sunday marked a new phase in Philip
Penrods faith as he was ordained a minister
in a service at Lord of All Lutheran Church
in Strathmore, where he attended with his
family from the time he was 9 months old.
Penrod responded to the call of God and
the church by taking his ordination vows in
front of a church full of family and friends.
Bishop Ron Mayan, of the Synod of Alberta
and the Territories of the Evangelical Lu-
theran Church in Canada presided over the
service, which included his commission-
ing the congregation to uphold Penrod in
prayer.
Many Lutheran clergy friends from Semi-
nary took part in the service including
one of his professors, Rev. Dr. Jann Boyd
from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in
Saskatoon, who spoke. Penrods wife and
daughter also participated in the service,
presenting him with his frst stole - the long
band of cloth Lutheran pastors wear as part
of their vestments, symbolizing their offce
of ordained ministry.
Penrods journey to Sundays service be-
gan years earlier with his choice of what to
do after high school. After some prodding
and encouragement from his father Lyle,
Penrod pursued his post secondary edu-
cation at Augustana University in Camrose
(also his fathers alma mater). When asked
about what path he was pursuing Penrod
humorously responded that truly he ma-
jored in indecision. He received an under-
graduate degree in Physical Education and
Theatre while he was taking an Educational
track to become a teacher.
While attending Augustana, Penrod be-
came actively involved in Campus Ministry
where the seed was planted by long-time
mentor and Campus Chaplin Lyle McKen-
zie. It was McKenzie who suggested that he
should possibly consider Seminary. Penrod
says he owes a debt of gratitude to McKen-
zie for a majority of the spiritual leadership
and call to the life of a vocation in ministry.
Penrods frst parish will be Our Savior Lu-
theran Church in Edmonton. Penrod said he
looks forward to the challenge of preaching
and studying in a faith based community.
He is captivated by an approach to out-
reach and witness and is intrigued by justice
work in an urban setting.

When the dust settled after fve days of racing, Kelly Suther-
land drove his Strathmore Station and Travel Lodge outft off
the number one barrel to the 2011, and his third, World Pro-
fessional Chuckwagon Association Dodge Pro Tour Champi-
onship, taking home a buckle and a new Dodge truck.
Monday nights race saw Sutherland face off in the sudden
death fnal heat against brother Kirk, Grant Proft and Troy
Dorchester, who rounded out the top four drivers on the
Dodge Pro tour in front of a capacity crowd.
The fnal was fast and tight but Sutherland held on to win
with a time of 1:13.70, which ended up being the second
fastest time of the day.
He won the Strathmore Heritage Days Stampede the day
before, with a four day aggregate time of 4:58.30, edging out
Kirk Sutherland for the top spot, and his fourth Strathmore
title, another record. Reo King and Chase Vigen were his
outriders for both races.
This win leaves him tied with Grant Proft for the top spot
in the WPCA world standings with 879 points.
Sutherland is on something of a roll, having won the Po-
noka Stampede and the Calgary Stampede earlier this year.
He kicked off training this year in Grand Prairie and said
that his horses were healthy and sound for the season
even if it was a bit of a slower start than expected. By the
time Sutherland got to Ponoka, his horses were ready and
pumped to run where he picked up $40,000 and a truck.
The Calgary Stampede started slowly for him but half-
way through the 10 day show Lady Luck smiled and (Suther-
land) won another Rangeland Derby which was his record-
breaking 12th win in Calgary.
Yet even with all these wins he said the best thing for him
this season was that his wife Debbie was healthy enough to
be at his side for both Calgary and Strathmores chuck races.
Starting his career in 1969, in his 42 years as a chuck-
wagon driver Sutherland has won 17 vehicles. Jokingly, wife
Debbie said, (He) never ceases to amaze meand grand-
kids are now starting to acquire the trucks he keeps win-
ning.
Grant Proft has held the number one in the WPCA world
standings for most of the season by himself, before Suther-
land joined him in a tie for frst place. This is the frst time
Proft has remained in top spot for this long.
Last year, thanks to a winning streak that included wins
in Strathmore, Drumheller and Edmonton, he jumped from
30th to third by the end of the season and continued his
strong performances in the 2011 season. He said its just a
matter of how the horses run on any given track and staying
clean throughout the season.
He was quick to point out where the credit is really due,
humbly saying, Chuckwagons are like curling, the skip gets
all the credit but the front end does all the work.
Proft, proud of his crew, family and thankful for his long-
standing friendship with Don and Sheila Adams, his spon-
sors from Ja-Co Welding and Associates says that his is the
easiest job, I just get to drive the team.
Dorchester said that he had a good strong year and was
pleased with eighth after Grand Prairie. I have had the op-
portunity to run a lot of different, steady and good horses.
Tonight I am using a different team and giving the horses
(that he) most used a night off to prepare them for Bonny-
ville, he said.
Next year marks Dorchesters 20th year in chuckwagons
and he believes things will stay strong and just hopes for
clean hard runs.
Good luck and safe penalty free runs for all the chuckwag-
on drivers and teams as they head off to their fnal four tour
stops, starting in Bonnyville on Thursday and then Dawson
Creek, Rocky Mountain House and fnally Drumheller at the
end of August.

The Childrens Wish Foundation is
hosting its frst, and hopefully annual,
Movie Under the Stars night Aug. 9.
The Strathmore and District Agricul-
tural Society have donated the grounds
and the movie will take place at the
Grandstand. The doors will open at
7:30 p.m., with the show beginning at
9 p.m.
This is our frst year trying out this
new event. There has never been an
outdoor movie event like this in Strath-
more before, so we think it will be
popular with the community. We hope
that this will become an annual event
in the years to come, said Leanne Pi-
neal, a committee member helping put
it together.
The idea of outdoor cinemas has
become popular in the recent years,
with many communities putting on
these type of events as fundraisers for
local charities and organizations, said
Kendra Armstrong, another committee
member.
The Company we are using is
called, FreshAirCinema and are based
out of Western Canada. They bring a
giant, two storey infatable screen to
the site and set it up under the stars.
Its a new, fresh idea that we hope will
be a fun family event, and a great way
to come together as a community to
raise money for such a worthy cause.
All of the funds raised from this
event, the annual Jelly Bean Dance,
silent auction, and Wishmakers Walk
for Wishes go towards granting the
wishes of children with life threaten-
ing illnesses.
This year we are working extra hard
to help grant the wish of a local Strath-
more child. She is just 3 years old,
and has a Wilms Tumour. Her wish
is to have a trailer for her family. Our
hope is that we can come together as a
community and help make this simple
wish come true, said Armstrong.
The average cost of a Wish is
$10,000, and there are many children
who are waiting to have wishes grant-
ed. The more money raised for the
Childrens Wish Foundation means the
more wishes they can help make come
true.
The event is open to all families.
Children 12 and under must be accom-
panied by an adult. Its free to get in,
though donations will be appreciated,
and there will be snacks and drinks
available for sale with all proceeds go-
ing to the Childrens Wish Foundation.
There are many benefts to sponsor-
ing this event, including recognition,
media acknowledgements, and sig-
nage at the event. To discuss oppor-
tunities for involvement and benefts
of sponsorship, please contact Christie
Anderson at (403) 934-8155.

Though the day began with drizzle
and a temperature of only three de-
grees above zero, the sun came out
for the 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at the
fourth Annual Strathmore Montessori
Societys Charity Golf Tournament.
A fantastic afternoon of 18 holes of
golf were enjoyed by all at the beau-
tiful Speargrass Golf Course near
Carseland.
As the afternoon drew to a close,
golfers enjoyed a delicious prime rib
dinner and were entertained by a
great musical performance by vocals
by Lindsay Goebel and Mike Smith on
the guitar. When the scorecards were
tabulated, congratulations went out to
the frst place team of Michelle Bean,
Rhonda Trimm, Brian Trimm and
Lee-Ann Lenox.
Since 2005, the Strathmore Montes-
sori Society has been actively fundrais-
ing to provide the specialized Montes-
sori learning materials and teacher
training integral for our Montessori
classrooms at Wheatland Elementary
School in Strathmore.
These items are not funded via the
school budget, so the public Montes-
sori program relies on monies raised
through charitable events facilitated
and organized by parent volunteers.
We are again very grateful to those
who supported our 2011 charity golf
tournament through donations of cash
and/or prizes, acting as hole sponsors
or participating as golfers.

Dusty LaValley (top right) claimed the bareback championship with an 85.5
ride on the last day of the Strathmore Heritage Day Stampede Rodeo. It was
a fantastic fve days of rodeo action, featuring some of the best cowboys
and cowgirls from Canada and the United States.

Dusty LaValley saved his best
for last in the bareback competi-
tion at the 2011 Strathmore Her-
itage Days Stampede.
As the last of 41 competitors
over fve days of action from
July 28 to Aug. 1, LaValley had
nothing to lose, and he im-
pressed the judges with a spec-
tacular ride on Centennial.
Ive been on that horse a cou-
ple times before, said LaValley,
who hails from Bezanson, Alta.
I knew what to expect and he
did his job. It felt good. Ive real-
ly been waiting for a good horse
here lately. The last couple,
three weeks have been a little
bit slow for me. I just had to be
patient waiting for a good horse
to have a good chance.
Judges awarded LaValley
an 85.5 ride, which was good
enough for top spot and a
cheque for $5,922.
This is such a good rodeo,
LaValley said. It pays so good.
Its one of the best ones in Can-
ada. I love being here. Its awe-
some.
To come out and have a good
horse and a good ride and win,
it just couldnt get any better.
Bobby Mote of Culver, Ore-
gon, placed second with a ride
of 84.5, while Steven Dent of
Mullen, New England fnished
third at 84.25.
Rodeo and chuckwagon chair-
man Pascal Del Guercio de-
clared the fve-day event a suc-
cess.
It was excellent, Del Guercio
said. We had world champions
here, we had Canadian champi-
ons here. The stock was incredi-
ble every performance. This was
as good as it gets.
Last year, Jesse Torkelson of
Warburg, Alta., fnished tied for
frst with two other competitors
in bull riding. This year, Torkel-
son rode Bananas for 87 points
on Sunday, and the score held
up to earn him the frst place
prize of $6,542.40 and a shiny
new belt buckle from the event
sponsored by the Strathmore
Times.
Tyler Willis of Wheatland,
Wyoming, fnished in second
spot with a score of 86.5, while
Tanner Byrne of Prince Albert,
Sask., wound up in third at 85.
In ladies barrel racing, Sherry
Cervi of Marana, Arizona, set
the pace with a time of 17.23
seconds to fnish frst and earn
$7275 in prize money. Trula
Churchills time of 17.40 was
good enough for second, while
Joleen Seitz of Savana, B.C. fn-
ished third in 17.49.
Rowdy Hays of Rocky Moun-
tain House, Alta., set a blister-
ing pace in steer wrestling with
a time of 3.4 seconds during
Saturdays performance and
it held up to earn him the top
prize of $7,144. Trevor Knowles
of Mt. Vernon, Oregon, record-
ed a great time of 3.5 but had
to settle for second spot, while
Stan Branco of Chowchilla, Cali-
fornia, fnished third just .2 sec-
onds behind Hays.
In tie-down roping, Cory Sol-
omon of Prairie View, Texas,
fnished frst with a time of 7.3
seconds to win $5,804.50. Tyson
Durfey of Colbert, Washington,
and Logan Hofer of Magrath,
Alta., fnished tied for second at
7.7.
In the team roping competi-
tion, Matt Fawcett of Stettler,
Alta., and Brett Buss of Ponoka,
Alta., took home $2,812.95 each
in prize money by fnishing
frst with a time of 5.5 seconds.
Three teams fnished tied for
second at 5.8.
Wade Sundell of Boxholm,
Iowa, won the saddle bronc
competition and the top prize
of $6,260.40 with a ride of 85.5
points. Ponokas Luke Butter-
feld and Taos Muncy of Corona,
New Mexico, fnished tied for
second at 82.25.
This is a tough rodeo, Mun-
cy said. There are a bunch of
good horses, so if you can place
here its pretty good. This is the
frst time Ive ever been and its
an awesome rodeo.
Its fun. Theyve got a lot of
excitement. I like watching the
novice bronc riding, the bare-
back riding and the cow riding.
They dont do that down south.
Its pretty cool those kids get to
ride. They kind of fre you up.
Tyler Wilson of Meadow Lake,
Sask., won the novice saddle
bronc event with a ride of 76.5
points. Cole Jamieson of Innis-
fail, Alta., fnished atop the nov-
ice bareback standings with a
ride of 77, while Rocky Moun-
tain Houses Cylas Bigchild won
the boys steer riding competi-
tion with a two-ride total of 149.
I just tried my best, said Big-
child, who proudly showed off
his shiny new belt buckle. This
was the frst pro rodeo I won.
Its a good feeling. Its one of the
biggest rodeos for steer riding.
Tyrel Ward won Saturdays
miniature bull riding event,
while Casey Scout placed sec-
ond. Ward and Scout were the
lone competitors with qualifed
rides.
In the fnal rodeo event of the
Stampede on Heritage Day, the
trio of Brodie Stumpf, Jeremy
Haut and Casey Fink of Calgary
won the Wild Horse Race.
For Stumpf, it was his frst
win in Strathmore in his fourth
straight year competing at the
Heritage Days Stampede.
I love it, Stumpf said. Ill
keep doing it for a long time.

The Strathmore Reds AA bantam team just fnished playing
in the Tier 2 provincials this past weekend in Calgary. They
went into provincials with six wins and 12 losses, but the
team started at zero again when they started provincials.
We did a lot better than I thought we would do. I thought
Bantam Reds compete in provincials
we (were) playing over our heads. I
didnt expect us to do that well, said
coach Jim Crooks.
I thought the boys played quite well
for the weekend. They put it together
for a couple of games. We couldnt get
our hitting going in the last game and
that kind of cost us, but other than that
it was a good weekend.
The weekend began with a win 17-0
against North Peace. The second game
was against Fort Saskatchewan. Crooks
said they were tied 7-7 in the bottom of
the seventh when one of the kids got
a walk off home run. On Sunday they
played in semi-fnal and lost 14-3.
The season has also been an up-and-
down kind of year.
We had a real terrible start, a real
good middle and a terrible ending,
said Crooks.
He said the way that the team was
tiered is what brought on the up and
down season. Crooks said at frst the
team was tiered too high, then too low,
and then higher then he would have
liked.

The Reds peewee baseball team hosted the provincial Tier
2 championships July 29 - 31. They lost the frst game of the
weekend, but won the rest of the games, fnishing off as the
champions.
They were ecstatic. Our bats were really, really strong.
We were really tight the frst game so we ended up losing
the frst game. Then the games after that, we kind of came
up with a bit of an exercise to keep the boys loose and they
came with their bats. We really swung the bat well the rest of
the weekend, said coach Daren Kennett.
Then on the semi-fnal game, we beat Bonnyville who we
hadnt beat all year. We beat them 15-1. We got to the fnal
game and our bats were good and our defense was awful. We
ended up winning 24-23.
It was three and half-hour game, and Kennett said the win
wasnt pretty, but they were happy with the win.
Oh, theres everything to work on. I think you just got to
keep working on all your baseball skills. I dont think you
can ever say you get there for sure, (theres) lots of stuff to
work on, hw said.

On July 16 and 17 the U12 Spurs soccer team
took part in the Inter-cities in Edmonton. The
Spurs faced tough competition, in undesirable
weather and playing conditions, but still came out
with a silver medal. The boys won the frst game
on the Saturday 6-2.
The frst half was tight but our superior attack-
ing play came into play in the second half. The
boys played well in hot conditions and a diffcult
feld with the grass too long to play the ball well
on the ground, said coach Simon Pritchard.
The second game on the Saturday was against
the other Calgary team, with whom, Pritchard
said, they had looked forward to a rematch.
The game was again tight in the frst half. The
long grass and hot conditions sapped the strength
of the team as we had a small bench. We were
losing 3-1, but it could have easily have been 3-3.
The second half we succumbed to the bet-
ter team, eventually losing 7-1, an unfair score
line considering the way the game went, said
Pritchard.
The fnal game kicked off on Sunday at noon
against Duggan from Edmonton. It was the silver
medal game, and the two teams were sitting at 0-0
at half time.
In the second half we played the better football,
but went down a goal. We then scored and chased
the winner, we could get the goal despite having
all the possession and dominating the game. The
game fnished 1-1, so to penalties, said Pritchard.
Both teams took fve penalties each these were
tied at 3-3. It went to sudden death rounds.
The Spurs managed to score in the third round,
and Duggan missed their shot making the Spurs

cities, which took place in mid July.

the Silver medalists.
I would like to mention my appreciation to all the play-
ers & parents this season, a lot of them put their own plans
on hold to attend the Inter-cities, some unfortunately had
to miss it due to commitments they could not cancel, said
Pritchard.
This was the end of the season for the boys, who were
happy to be bringing home a silver medal.
Kennett said at the beginning of the season he went home
and told his wife he hoped they would win a couple of
games this year and was pretty sure they would be Tier 4.
He said the kids worked really hard and ended up winning
Tier 2, which was a real achievement.
We had a great group of parents and our parents all
pitched in and helped and we had a lot of positive comments
on our hosting, so hats off to our parents they did an excel-
lent job, said Kennett.
That always makes it nice when you hear those kind of
comments. I think the big thing for the team is hard work
and dedication paid off and they can say that they are the
provincial champions.
The peewee Reds baseball team came out on top this weekend, after win-
ning the provincial championship.

Long-time UFA Bisons
manager Neil Glionna has
appropriately been nominat-
ed in the annual Small Town
Heroes 2011, hosted by the
United Farmers of Alberta.
The contest honours spe-
cial people whose heroic ef-
forts have made a real differ-
ence to their community.
Normally I just stay be-
hind the scenes, but its
nice to be recognized, said
Glionna, a member of the
Bisons family for 16 seasons.
The love of it (brings me
back year after year). The
day you dont love doing it,
you stop doing it, right? That
is probably the code for all
volunteers.
Glionna frst joined the Bi-
sons by helping out in the
penalty box during home
games, before being re-
cruited by the teams then-
manager Larry Duthie, who
brought on Glionna as an
assistant manager. When
Duthie stepped aside half
a dozen years ago, Glionna
became the Bisons general
manager.
And now, despite being on
the ice seven months of the
year, Glionna says, the job
has become a year-round
gig.
With me, when the sea-
son is over, you close it and
you start (the next season)
over, said Glionna, who vol-
unteers at least 30 hours a
week with the club, on top
of his regular job. You have
to (plan and look ahead to
next year) because if you
wait until the season to get
everything done, its chaos.
The more you can be ahead
of the game, the better.
As volunteers, its not a
full-time job you have your
(real) full-time job and your
family to take care of.
According to the UFA
website, the backbone of
rural communities and small
towns across Alberta is its
people. In these communi-
ties, there are certain indi-
viduals that do all the right
things to make their town a
better place to live. And, they
do it without any thought
for themselves. They are our
small town heroes.
UFA will select two small
town heroes, and each will
receive a concert by Paul
Brandt and $2,500 to go to-
wards their community ef-
forts. Eight runners-up will
each receive $1,000 for their
community.
Voting is now open on the
UFA website right now. Go
to www.ufa.com and follow
the Small Town Heroes link
to cast your vote.
Here is Glionnas profle
featured on the contests
website.
Neil is a tireless volun-
teer who is the Manager of
the UFA Bisons Midget AAA
hockey team. Neil has been
involved with the team for
15 years in various capaci-
ties. He started volunteer-
ing as an off-ice offcial,
running the clock in the
penalty box. He then took
over the managers role of
the team. The hours that it
takes to run a AAA midget
hockey team are astound-
ing. On average, during the
season, Neil will put in a
30 hours week dealing with
team business, making sure
that the coaches and players
have everything they need
to make them successful.
During the off season, the
work doesnt end. It requires
hours of work setting up the
camp for the next season,
getting staff and volunteers
in place, etc. Neil does all
this work tirelessly without
ever a complaint. He does
it for the love of the game
and the community and fans
of the team. Without volun-
teers like Neil, a team like
this would not exist and cer-
tainly not have the success it
has had.
Making a difference in the community
