BHEL goes multi-modal to cut down logistics cost

With demands on its plant estimated to exceed 8.5 lakh tonnes of steel this year, BHEL's Tiruchi unit, which produces boilers for thermal power plants, has come up with a plan to go multi-modal, to bring down logistics costs and time. Basically, it intends to make a much larger use of rail and sea. For starters, BHEL has hired a big yard at Sakthinagar, Uttar Pradesh, to which it will send most of the boiler equipment meant for customers in that region. The advantage is that a 40-rake train will take 3,500 tonnes of material from Tiruchi to Sakthinagar, non-stop, in about six days.

The manufacturing PMI number, however, is indicating a rather sharp deceleration. The index has declined from 58 in April to 53.6 in July. It was at 55.3 in June. The new orders sub-index, which is an indicator of future output, has eased from 63.9 in April to 54.5 in July. Funding squeeze pushes India Inc into PE's arms

Private equity investment in India is accelerating, as rising borrowing costs and dormant public markets in Asia's third-largest economy push companies to cut deals with buyout firms in return for much-needed cash injections. Unlike developed markets, India offers few buyout opportunities and the bulk of the money are employed as growth capital, with average deals in the range of $25-$100 million. But more deals are emerging now as India's entrepreneurs slowly lower their valuation expectations and dip into a large pool of capital held by private equity.
