TECHNICAL SUMMARY SHEET Greens n Things (VL438) Indications Greens n Things has the following benefits: Provides antioxidant

t protection May protect against carcinogens and pollution Offers organic fruits, vegetables and greens Greens Background and Application Greens n Things contains a variety of green foods which typically refer to wheatgrass, barley grass, and oat grass and microalgae such as spirulina. Nutrient-rich grasses, vegetables and fruits offer multiple health benefits. Grasses, plants and algae contain chlorophyll, a natural plant pigment. Mechanism of Action Chlorophyll is a cyclic tetrapyrolle and possesses a similar structure to hemoglobin, myoglobin and cytochromes, except that the metal ion in chlorophyll is magnesium, where in heme it is iron.1 It has been proposed that chlorophyll exerts chemoprotective effects possibly due to its antioxidant activity. Antioxidant Protection Chlorophyll, fruits and vegetables provide a source of antioxidants. It is widely accepted that antioxidants inhibit oxidation and therefore prevent damage to cell membranes, including lipid peroxidation of LDL cholesterol. It is also well known that a diet containing a variety of fruits and vegetables promotes overall health through its contribution of micronutrients, fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Chronic oxidative damage to cells has been associated with the development of degenerative diseases. Caused by free radicals (from pollution, stress, smoke, pesticides and UV radiation), oxidation also occurs as a by-product of normal cellular metabolism. Once a free radical absorbs an electron from a paired electron, the new molecule becomes highly reactive since it now contains an unpaired electron. A chain reaction of oxidation then ensues. To handle this, the human body compensates by effectively using antioxidants. ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is a measure of how much a particular substance has the ability to absorb a free radical. Essentially, it reveals

the power individual foods have in quenching radical oxygen species (ROS) that destroy cell membranes. Studies in rats showed those who consumed high ORAC foods were protected better than controls against lung capillary damage, loss of memory and learning ability, and brain nerve cell damage.2 Two human studies3,4 showed that consuming high ORAC foods or more fruits & vegetables lead to 13-25% increase in antioxidant power in the blood. Protection Against Carcinogens Chlorophyll may possess antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic activities due to the complex formed between a mutagen and carcinogen and chlorophyll.1 Research has shown inhibition of mutagens (cigarette smoke, coal dust and diesel emission), and 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced nuclear damage in cells lining rats large intestine.1 The addition of a variety of multiple fruits and vegetable powders and their ORAC value contributes to the overall antioxidant and phytonutrient content of this product. Organic Foods While more research is needed, it is generally accepted that organic produce and grains contain less pesticides and other potentially harmful chemicals compared to non-organic counter parts. Some studies show organic produce may confer more nutrients.5 In addition, supporting organic farming may assist the environment in part by offering sustainable farming practices. Our Product Greens n Things provides 4483 mg of organic green foods (including organic wheatgrass, organic barley grass, organic oat grass, organic flaxseed and organic spirulina), 4485 mg of organic fruit and vegetable blend (including organic apple, organic strawberry, organic cherry, organic blueberry, organic raspberry, organic beet, organic kale, organic carrot, organic spinach, and organic tomatoes).
