WE had a great afternoon recently at the St Peters CE Primary School summer fair which celebrated the schools 50th year. It was good to see how the school had evolved over the years and there were some old pictures which brought back memories for many of the visitors. You can read more in this months edition. Theres also news of a new book published by the former owner of Linghams, police update, an anniversary for the Heswall Centre, West Wirral Rotary 10K run and much more, including an entertainment guide for the month. Emma starts Glee-style choir HESWALL actress Emma Nowell has launched her own Glee-style pop choir. Emma, who presents the Hi-5 show, has started Gleek Club which will meet weekly at Heswall British Legion. The sessions will also feature vocal training for the adult and youth choirs. Extra patrols on Whitfield Common POLICE in Heswall have put extra patrols out on Whitfield Common in an effort to break up groups of youths in the area. In partnership with Merseyside Fire & Rescue, they have engaged with the young people to get them involved in diversionary activities. From the Merseyside Police website: Nigel Chapman, aged 51, from Milner Road, Heswall was given a 12 month community sentence, ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, fined 85 costs and disqualified from driving for 4 years, after being convicted of drink driving. Police target youths POLICE have tackled anti-social behaviour on Pensby Road between Ashlea Road and Fishers Lane by carrying out extra patrols.

Celebrations for Heswall Centre THE Heswall Centre for Adults with Learning and Physical Disabilities celebrated the 40th anniversary of its opening recently with a celebratory strawberry cream tea. Since 1971, the centre, on Telegraph Road, has become part of the local community and has supported and hosted various activities including: coffee mornings, quiz nights, and the Orion Clubs weekly social evenings. It is also known for its part in Scarecrow Festivals, Wirral Ranger Service events and activities, and for supporting charities including McMillan Nurses and Children In Need. Heswall St Peters CE Primary Schools 50th anniversary summer fair took place recently, giving guests the chance to look around the school and see what has changed since 1961. Head teacher Chris Penn and former head teacher Brian Morris look at old photographs from the 1980s. Brian was head from 1980 to 1997. Constable Derek Murphy with Police Cadet Laura Evans and Police Community Support Officer Alistair Grey, warning motorists to be wary about leaving valuables on show following a spate of thefts in the Heswall area recently.

Ronald Tarbuck, who attended the school in the 1930s and his wife Pat reminisce after seeing their sons on an old picture. Ronald, who is 85, attended the old St Peters School, which was bombed and destroyed in the Second World War. Two of their three children Shaun and Graeme went to the new school in the 1960s and 70s. Ronald also showed a picture of himself with a sports day trophy from the 1930s

On the run for a good cause

FOR the third consecutive year, the Rotary Club of West Wirral organised a 10 kilometre competitive run at Leasowe Common in aid of St Johns Hospice on the Wirral. The overall winner for the third year was Lee Jones of Deeside Athletic Club with a course record of 35 minutes and 18 seconds. A full list of the results is posted at www.westwirralrotary.org The success of this event, as on previous years, was primarily due to the fine organisational skills of John Courtney from West Wirral Rotary Club aided by other members of his club and by ladies from the West Wirral Inner Wheel Club. Thanks are due to Bob Brimage and his colleagues from Wallasey Athletic Club who provided the skill and specialised equipment for holding the event.
