Message from ICAA

Welcome from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA)

On behalf of the approximately 12,000 Chartered Accountants and CA students in Alberta, welcome to the 2010 CA Student Recruiting Handbook. Recognized worldwide, the Chartered Accountant (CA) designation represents financial expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership. As highly valued professionals, CAs are leaders in all segments of the Canadian marketplace. By choosing to pursue a career as a CA, you are on your way to joining a membership of professionals who are essential to the success of the countrys foremost organizations. In both thriving and uncertain economic times, the CA profession plays a significant role in business. Albertas CAs continue to distinguish themselves as skilled advisors, experienced strategic planners, and proven leaders. This is a standard that CAs have set and held throughout the years, and a standard you will be challenged to uphold when you earn your designation. Your contributions and advice as a Chartered Accountant will be integral to the success of any organization youre a part of. As the Alberta post-secondary landscape continues to change and grow, so has the ICAAs approach to CA career information. The ICAA has chosen to regionalize some of its key career information events to account for the new post-secondary institutions throughout Alberta that are offering programs that can lead students to becoming CAs. The ICAA has also moved to a more regional format for this publication. It is being offered electronically this year so it can be accessed widely by students at various post-secondary institutions across the province. Housed on the ICAAs website, the new electronic format also allows for live web links and the automatic updating of information. This CA Student Recruiting Handbook provides useful information to students interested in becoming a CA. It is a one-stop shop for information about CA Training Offices, CA recruitment, post-secondary organizations, and more. It is also important to note that 2010 marks a very special milestone for the Chartered Accountants of Alberta. Throughout the year, the ICAA is celebrating 100 years of dedication to protecting the public, providing accounting and business excellence, and adding value to Albertas communities. We are an organization with a past of excellence, a present of celebration, and a future of promise. I hope all of you enjoy this years CA Student Recruiting Handbook and I wish each of you the best of luck with your studies and in your pursuit of the CA designation. Sincerely,

CASB: Educating CA Students in Western Canada

CASB delivers the pre-qualification education for prospective CAs living in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. While students complete the program, they are also completing three years of practical experience. This combination of work experience and education helps students develop the professional qualities, skills and technical competence expected of todays Chartered Accountants. CASBs program comprises six learning modules, led by trained facilitators who are also practicing CAs. There are five eight-week modules to help students develop the technical and pervasive competencies required by CAs, and one module specifically to help students prepare for the UFE.

Modules 1 to 5
Modules 1 through 5 are primarily delivered online, with one three-day weekend face-to-face session, and a one-day evaluation for each module. The modules are a single case study, following the story of Vision Windows Limited (Vision), an organization that grows from a one-man operation to a company contemplating listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Each week, students read more of Visions story and complete tasks from the perspectives of different people who are involved with the company, such as assistant controller, external auditor, or an associate in public practicethe kinds of roles that CAs fill.

Online learning
CASB students communicate with each other and with their online facilitators via email, chat, and the discussion board. They learn by doing as they work through the five modules. Every week, they access a narrative that reveals more about Vision, along with notes for discussions, resources, and required tasks. The tasks may seem directive initially, though as students progress through the modules and become familiar with CASBs expectations, the tasks become less directive and the material more complex.

Face-to-face sessions
Over one weekend during each of the first five modules, students attend a three-day, face-toface session with a facilitator and other students in their module. Chartered Accountants need to be able to speak in group situations and lead discussions, so CASB uses these sessions to help students develop competence in this area. Participation, leadership, and courtesy are all evaluated requirements of these sessions.

Evaluation
At the conclusion of each module, students complete a one-day evaluation to assess whether they have understood what they learned and can apply both their knowledge and practical skills in challenging workplace scenarios.

Module 6
Module 6 is a two-week, face-to-face session held in late July, specifically designed to help students prepare for the UFE. As part of Module 6, students also get access to www.UFEPrep.com, which contains resources to help improve case writing abilities.

The Uniform Evaluation (UFE)

Once students have successfully completed the six CASB modules, they proceed to the UFE, a three-day, competency-based evaluation consisting of a five-hour comprehensive case simulation and several multi-subject simulations. The national UFE ensures all Canadian CAs meet the same high standards standards recognized nationally and internationally.

What CASB Students can Expect

CASB students: Are actively involved in their own learning and competency development; Learn through role-play, working on scenarios and issues theyll face at work; Look at business issues from different perspectives, and develop strong critical thinking and problem solving skills as a result; Learn, understand, and become ready for changing accounting and auditing standards; Understand that being a CASB-educated CA is about more than being an accountant: its about demonstrating excellence in all they do.

Admission
To enter the CASB program you need: 1. A university degree, or equivalent,

2. A 65% overall average in the CASB pre-requisite courses 3. Employment with an approved CA Training Office (CATO)

Prerequisites
Students will be accepted into the CASB program with a university degree or equivalent and a 65% average in the following 12 pre-requisites: General Business (three required) Assurance (one introductory course required) Finance (one introductory and one intermediate required) Information Systems and Technology (one intermediate course required; a second intermediate or advanced MIS course is highly recommended) Performance Measurement (two intermediate financial accounting, one intermediate managerial/cost accounting and one of accounting theory, advanced financial accounting, advanced financial statement analysis, advanced managerial/cost accounting or international accounting required) Taxation (one introductory course covering both personal and corporate required)

A full list of courses names and numbers can be found at www.becomea.ca.

CASB: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is required for me to enroll in the CA School of Business (CASB)?
A: To register for CASB, you must obtain an approved four-year, 120 credit undergraduate degree (the degree can be from any faculty) and complete 12 business and accounting prerequisite courses. A three-year term of practical experience at an approved CA Training Office (CATO) is an integral part of the program. You can start Module 1 without a position, but you will need to have secured one before starting Module 2. A list of approved CATOs is available at www.becomea.ca.

Q: How long does it take to become a CA? A: Once youve started with a CATO, it generally takes three years to complete the required work experience to become a CA. While youre completing this work experience, you will also take the six modules that comprise the CASB educational program. You can take the modules continuouslyso youll be taking courses for approximately 18 monthsor spread the courses out to fit your schedule. Q: When do I have to get my transcripts in? A: Your transcripts will need to be sent directly to CASB Student and Support Services from the educational institutions you attended to complete the degree and prerequisite courses. You should request your transcripts from the institutions at the same time that you submit your student registration to CASB. All university prerequisites must be complete before you can begin Module 1. Q: When am I eligible to start Module 1? A: You are eligible to start Module 1 when you have earned a bachelors degree as well as all of the prerequisite courses. You dont need to be employed with a CATO to take Module 1, but you need an offer of employment before you start Module 2 and must be working before you start Module 3. Q: What are the university prerequisites? A: There are 12 prerequisites in general business, assurance, finance, IT, performance measurement, and taxation. The list of prerequisites for Alberta universities is available at www.becomea.ca. Q: Do all of the prerequisites have to be complete before I can start Module 1? A: Yes, you must complete all of the prerequisites prior to the start of Module 1. If you are finishing a prerequisite just before Module 1 starts, your registration in the module will be subject to CASB receiving the official transcript for this prerequisite. Q: Is there a GPA requirement for CASB? A: You need a 65% overall average in the 12 prerequisites. The GPA of your bachelors degree is not considered when you register.

Q: How does CASB work if I am a Co-op student? A: If you are in a CASB-recognized Co-op degree program, you will follow a sequence of work and study terms approved by your university, CASB, and your employer. This sequence is likely to be unique to each university, and depends upon when a student enters Co-op, the number of prerequisites completed at the time of entry, and the number of terms remaining until the degree is earned. Co-op students are eligible to begin taking CASB modules during their work terms provided that Intermediate Financial Accounting 1 and 2, and Tax (both personal and corporate) have been completed prior to the start of Module 1. Q: What is competency-based education? Competency-based education focuses on developing the skills and attributes (competencies) required to perform a specific task or job. The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants defines the competencies that students require to qualify as CAs and evaluates those competencies through the UFE. CASB students develop CA competencies by completing weekly modules tasks and by completing their experience in CATOs. Q: How much time will I spend on the modules? A: Modules 1 through 5 are structured as a single case study, with weekly readings revealing more of the story and the required tasks. You should expect to spend 12-to-15 hours each week completing the tasks. Over one weekend in each module, youll attend a three-day face-to-face session, where youll participate in discussions and activities. After eight weeks, youll complete a one-day evaluation. Q: What happens if I do not achieve competency in a module? A: If you dont achieve competency in a module, you are required to retake it in its entirety. All modules (except Module 6) are offered at least twice a year. Check the Schedule of Module Key Dates on the CASB website (www.casb.com) to determine the next available offering of any specific module. Q: How many times can I attempt a module? A: You will have three attempts to achieve competency in any module before being de-registered from the program. Q: How much flexibility do I have in determining when I take a particular module? A: Because competency development is a building process, all modules must be taken in sequence. You can determine when to schedule modules, subject to the consent of your employer. In planning your schedule, you should consider their offices busy season and your own important personal events. Q: What is the face-to-face interactive session? A: The face-to-face interactive sessions involve the development and evaluation of many of the pervasive qualities set out in the CA Competency Map and include activities such as presentations and group work. While at the

session, you will broaden and deepen your understanding of what you learned in the module using both individual and group exercises and discussion. Q: Where will the interactive workshops be held in Alberta? A: The face-to-face interactive sessions have been scheduled to be offered at least once a year for each module in Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge. We use student enrollments to determine the session locations, and because of the flexibility of the module schedule, we may not be able to offer a session in each location for every module offering. Q: What is the National Uniform Evaluation (UFE)? A: The UFE is the evaluation that all prospective CAs in Canada must successfully complete in order to earn the designation. It is a comprehensive, three-day, competency-based evaluation that challenges candidates to demonstrate they have the skills necessary to be a competent professional.

Thus, you are expected to adhere to the same high level of professionalism in the classroom as is expected in the workplace. Professionalism has its foundation in respect, honesty and personal responsibility. While it may seem that the following list states the obvious, experience has proven that it is best to provide a detailed outline of what will be expected of students in the program: Professionalism In class, be prepared and participate willingly and actively Use courteous, gender neutral language and language which is respectful of different cultures or religions Refrain from gossip and derogatory comments Keep information confidential when requested to do so when not sure, clarify Remember that you represent your alma mater and, if you are employed, your firm while you are here Respect Attend all classes and workshops In the unusual case where you are unable to attend class, let the professor know as soon as possible beforehand (by e-mail, phone or in person) Arrive a few minutes before class is scheduled to begin and stay until the end When you need to temporarily excuse yourself from class, leave and return as quietly as you can. If possible, do not leave class until break time. Bring your name cards to class until the professors get to know you by name Listen to presentations, comments and questions without unnecessary interruption

The way you dress has consequences and can impact the classroom environment. When we have speakers from the business world, business casual is the preferred dress code. Honesty

Refrain from any type of academic dishonesty If requested to work on an assignment individually and not in groups, do so Be truthful in all dealings with professors and colleagues Learning Responsibility

Complete the assigned readings and prepare for the cases, exercises etc, thoroughly Be aware that differences exist in volume, style and content of the literature in undergraduate texts and the reading and critical analysis of contemporary research literature Be aware that the normal 10 week long semester work load is concentrated into about 5 weeks in MPAcc, however the academic standards remain uncompromised Commit yourself, both physically and mentally, to a short period of extremely intensive and demanding academic activity Personal Responsibility

Acknowledge that you are ultimately personally responsible for your own successes and failures in this program If you are having difficulties, seek help from your professors or your director Accept responsibility for missed deadlines or unmet requirements Manage your time and your personal and academic progress

4. Interview Supplementary Reading: Successful Interviews

Pre-Interview Stage
Research the company You should always do your homework by researching the company. Good luck comes from solid preparation and identifying opportunities. Phone, visit or check the company's website for information/materials on the following: company philosophy, annual and monthly financial reports, current changes in management, corporate and organizational structure, and names of key people in management. Visit the Career Services office or public libraries for information related to the topic you are researching (CD - ROM, annual reports, publications, business information). Record information you can use in the interview. This shows evidence of initiative, enthusiasm, organization and research skills. Know your interviewers' names by making a pre-interview phone call or visiting the company. Talk to people who may know something about the company to gain inside knowledge. Review skills, strengths and common interview questions, Knowing what you have to offer is a valuable tool. Read and memorize your resume and cover letter to make sure you can recall your strengths and skills. Read the job description and advertisement and highlight the skills the employer wants. Anticipate the questions that could arise in the interview and prepare answers to them. Practice storytelling. Write down a relevant, professional story that best describes how you have practiced your skills in the past. Your story should answer the questions: "Tell us about a time when...", "How did you handle it?", "What was the outcome or result? Plan and practice how you will let the employer know that you have the skills, abilities and attitude required to meet their specific needs for this job. Practice answering questions from your list of "most commonly asked questions". You can video tape yourself or practice in front of a mirror. Make a list of some relevant questions to ask the interviewer.

Prepare references Your reference list should include: 2-5 people who can speak of your strengths and accomplishments; preferably professionals such as supervisors, managers, owners, volunteer coordinators, etc. Avoid personal references--They are often not seen as impartial. Always ask permission to use someone as a reference and keep him/her informed about your job search. It is important that they are prepared if a potential employer calls them!

Prepare positive attitude and professional appearance The way you carry yourself is important to a successful interview. Plan your time and route so that you know how to get to the address, where to park, exact floor, etc. and still be 15 minutes early. You will have only one chance to make a good first impression. Dressing professionally sets the tone and positively influences the interviewer.

The Interview Stage

Establish rapport The way you interact with the interviewer determines his or her assumptions about your ability to get along with others. Ensure you are comfortable and can establish a good presence. Generate the right chemistry as soon as possible; use a warm handshake; be appreciative and say Thank you for seeing me up front; make eye contact with everyone in the room quickly; use a humorous statement only if you can pull it off appropriately; smile. Make small talk to generate some compatibility; notice pictures in office, mention weather, office decor, helpfulness of secretary, etc. when you first meet the interviewer. Do not accept coffee or tea until very comfortable and relaxed.

Use positive body language Body language accounts for 70 per cent of communicating. Know yourself well and pay attention to what your body is saying. A firm, warm handshake with 2-3 pumps only. Smile and make eye contact, especially during the first handshake and when you are making a point. Accept a chair; sit once the interviewer also shows signs of sitting. Sit erect but relaxed in chair, move forward when making a strong point or listening attentively and showing interest.

Exchange relevant information You only have a limited time to relay some very important information in an interview. Make sure that everything you say has substance. Practice effective listening techniques such as paraphrasing, statements of affirmation, agreement, interest and clarification such as, "I understand", "I agree", "I think you are asking me...Is that correct?" Describe your experience by using the Situation Action Result (SAR) technique to tell your stories. Describe the problem or situation involved; what actions you took and what happened; what results did you get. Answer questions clearly and concisely. Never say you cannot do something, say you are a quick, willing learner. Identify the issues important to the hiring person/team. Take time to think about your answers; 5-10 seconds is acceptable. Show enthusiasm about areas that interest you. Maintain your integrity and professionalism at all times--do not talk negatively of previous employers. Negative words can get around easily.

Questions you could ask at the interview During an interview, asking questions is as important as answering them. Interviewers like to know that you have an interest in knowing more about the job or the company and that you have thought about what you have learned. Could you describe what a typical day would be like? Where do you see this company in five years? Are there chances for growth and promotion in the company? How would you describe the BEST candidate for this position? Who would I be reporting to? How many people will I be working with? How much autonomy do I have in the position? Does this job require a large amount of overtime? Does the company have allowances for training and development? What would you say would be my number 1 priority in this position? Can I clarify anything more for you about my skills, experience and education? Is there anything else that you would like to know about me?

Provide closure Your last impression can be as important as your first impression. Ask questions once the interviewer has indicated that it is your turn; prepare questions before. Repeat your strong skills and qualifications and let them know you are convinced that you would be able to do the job well. Ask for the job. Shake hands before you leave. Thank the interviewer(s) and smile regardless of how the interview went. Make arrangements for the next step. Ask if you should call.

Post-interview Stage
Interview follow-up It is always helpful to follow-up on interviews, especially if you want to continue to reinforce your employability and continue to leave an impression on the interviewer. Make notes about each interview to help remember for future meetings, phone calls, or second interviews. Phone to find out about the competition, and respond to any concerns or issues of the hiring team. Ask what you could have done better and plan a strategy to improve at least one thing the next time. Follow-up by sending a thank you letter to all of the people involved in the interview. Send it no later than 48 hours after the interview. Thank the interviewer and include something about the job that excited or interested you, and mention anything that you forgot or need to state more clearly.

5. Self Marketing & Networking Supplementary Reading: You are the Product Self Marketing & Networking Please Note: Career Services can assist you with information needed to present to employers such as: information brochures, program content, work experience process information, etc. Please contact your Work Experience Coordinator to obtain these materials as needed. It is important to research your options before you make a decision on your job search. This may take some time and effort on your part; however, it is better to make a well-researched and informed decision. Consider the following analogy. A company is about to launch a new product or service or enter a new market. Few successful companies would do this without extensive research about the marketplace into which they are about to venture. In this case, you are the product entering the marketplace. You'll need to conduct market research, and develop a self marketing plan. Some questions to consider: As the product, what are the unique features and benefits that you have to offer? Where is the specific market for my skills and experience? (Experience can include work, education and life experience) Who are the prospective employers? Who needs my skills? What are the needs of the employer? How do I best promote my skills / expertise?

Networking Networking is simply the art of making contacts and building relationships. "Networking" is a two-way exchange. Here are some ways to network: Talk to people in the CA profession/industry segment that you are targeting. Learn about the problems and challenges of that area and what employers are looking for. Attend Information sessions and industry events. There are many free (or low cost) events related to the industry locally, provincially and nationally. Show genuine interest in others. Get noticed! Phone, write or e-mail friends, relatives, acquaintances, colleagues and associates and ask them for suggested contacts. Let everyone know what you are looking for! This is the time to pull out those business cards and use them! Join professional associations in your industry. Many have student membership rates. Volunteer to help organize events. Watch and listen for news regarding new projects, programs, initiatives or industry change (television, newspaper, magazines, internet, e-newsletters, etc.). Make a point of being in the right place at the right time. Understand what the 2010/2010 economy trends will be like and engage a professional in a conversation on this topic! Be organized - prepare for all your meetings, rehearse your questions, make notes, and follow up on all new leads. Keep a journal or daily planner and record your contacts.

Message from Accounting Chair

THE ACCOUNTING PROFESSION By Karim Jamal, FCA and CA Distinguished Professor Chair, Department of Accounting and MIS 2010 It is my great pleasure to welcome you and extend greetings and best wishes from the Department of Accounting and MIS. The AMIS department is growing (Management Science has now joined us), and next year we are proposing to introduce an accounting honors program. After a long and dedicated effort to master accounting, finding the most appropriate career placement is a very important task. In life you succeed by finding out what you are good at, and then pursuing that. You also need to understand your weaknesses and neutralize them, so they do not hold you back. Each of you has to slowly find your niche in the world, and while accounting affords many different technical career opportunities (auditing, tax, valuation, forensics), you also have to look for an inter-personal fit. You have to be comfortable with the people you work with, respect them and look forward to going to work every day. The CA Student Recruiting Handbook is an extremely useful tool for students to understand some of the opportunities available and to get to know the CA firms who are potential employers. The CA profession offers many opportunities and the recent GAAP proliferation (IFRS, and the new made in Canada PE GAAP) will keep accountants busy for the next few years. These new GAAP regimes should be seen as an opportunity to make accounting more relevant and useful to different segments of society. Career success requires technical competence, integrity and professionalism in all aspects of your conduct. Try and learn as much as you can about the different firms and opportunities that the CA profession provides. Focus on both technical aspects and the inter-personal environment that each opportunity provides. Look for employers who are progressive and entrepreneurial in their thinking, and who understand the tremendous value that a fresh young person can bring to an organization. Best wishes to all students. I hope you have a rewarding and fulfilling career.

Interview Preparation
I. Background information Interviewing is a stressful process but careful preparation can help minimize your stress and help you to present your best self. First it is important to understand the real objective of interviewing. This is not a one sided process with you as the interviewee being grilled by the interviewers. The interview is actually a dialog and an exchange of information between you and the employer. This is as much about you determining if this company and job opportunity is right for you as it is about the company determining if you are a good fit for their needs. Remember that the employer has to sell you on the position as much as you have to sell yourself to the employer. Recruiters will be assessing two aspects of you as a candidate in making a good recruiting decision. The first is an examination of the skills, knowledge and abilities that you possess and how they match up to the requirements of the job. Your resume is the primary vehicle used to convey this information; the purpose of the interview is to add to the initial picture presented by it. Some of the questions presented by the interviewer concentrate on this issue; reviewing your education, qualifications and experience. Other questions are designed to probe deeper, examining what you would do if presented with a specific situation or what your actions were in a given situation as the past is thought to be a good predictor of the future. The second factor is deciding how you will fit into the organization. Your activities, interests and personality are examined in relation to the position and the organizational characteristics. Both factors are important for a good match between the firm and the individual. Most firms take into account both elements in structuring their interviews. There are also three main types of interview techniques that you should be aware of. The first type is based on traditional questions about your education, qualifications, and experience. The second type is behavioural in nature; your behaviour in actual situations is important to the interviewer. The third is the type of interview where you are asked to solve a theoretical problem, to find out about your problem-solving processes. Altogether, these questions give the interviewer an idea about both your qualifications and your potential fit into the organization. Interviewers may frame their questions concentrating on one technique, or a combination of interview techniques. Regardless of the format used, preparing in advance will assist you in providing meaningful responses and presenting your best self. The following summaries will give you some sense of how the three main types of interview techniques function. Traditional interview questions are some of the common questions that are used by interviewers. Knowing your personal information and the facts you have presented in your

application materials is VERY important when being interviewed in this manner. As well this is your chance to include and expand on information you were not able to convey in your resume and cover letter. Have specific examples in mind in addition to what you highlighted in your cover letter. Include information for areas such as academic and extracurricular achievements, past work and volunteer experience and group work. When providing specific examples use SAR (situation, action, result), to demostrate your value. Be ready to think on your feet and answer questions about your materials. Refer to our Interview Preparation Handbook for some sample questions to help you prepare and give you a sense of what areas they may question you on. The behavioural interview, referred to as a Behaviour Description Interview (BDI) is by far the most common interview technique used by employers. BDI questions are job-related behaviour questions developed from a detailed job analysis of the position, examining what effective and ineffective workers do in a given situation. Further probing by the interviewer helps to bring out exactly what you did in the situation and the results of your actions. The intention here is to use past behaviour as a predictor of future behaviour so choose your responses carefully. Having an idea of what information the interviewer is trying to get from you and how you should approach these questions will help you to present a clear and concise picture of what you have done and what you would do now given a specific situation. Again, refer our Interview Preparation Handbook for sample BDI questions to help you prepare and have examples at the ready. The problem solving interview can take several forms but the most common is the case interview. A case interview is an interview that includes a problem or analysis that you solve or complete within an allotted period of time. It will more than likely not be related to your area of expertise, and you will have very little relevant information given to you to solve the case. This may sound impossible, but remember one important point: the employer is not seeking a particular right answer; they want to see your problem-solving processes. Be sure to keep calm, and try to break the problem down into a manageable size. Use pen and paper to keep track of your path of logic. Be creative, be logical, and above all, be ready to defend your answer! II. Process - what to do at various steps in the interview process A. Before One of the keys to success in an interview is preparation. You should go into an interview with a thorough understanding of the job that you have applied for. Review the specific job posting and your application materials. Be sure you are clear not only on what the job posting indicates they are looking for but also what skills and experience you highlighted in your cover letter to get this interview. In addition to knowing about the position you are being interviewed for, you should have at least a basic understanding of the organization you are meeting with. This can include knowing what business they are in, who their clients are, what they produce, ownership structure, who their competitors are, recent events that may have made the news (i.e.

mergers, name changes, expansion of product lines, layoffs, management changes, innovations, etc.) and the financial position of the organization. You can't bluff your way through this part of the process in the hope that you can study up for the second interview; you probably won't get the chance. Take the opportunity beforehand to practice answering interview questions. You should get used to answering questions smoothly, with little hesitation. Know your personal information, and be ready to think on your feet. For a selection of exercises to help you prepare, refer to the sample questions in the Interview Preparation Handbook which is available in our office and online. Remember, these sample questions will cover many questions that a firm might ask you, but they are still only sample questions. Dont memorize an answer to each question! Another key to success is the presentation. First impressions are lasting. It takes less work to create a good first impression than to try to turn around a bad one. You should consider: What to wear. Conservative attire - try to get an idea of what is acceptable office wear for that particular firm. Keep in mind that what is acceptable varies from firm to firm (i.e. a blue suit and white shirt environment versus a more casual atmosphere). What to take. You should take a copy of your cover letter and resume, the job description and two copies of your references (one for you and one for the interviewer). If they requested transcripts as part of the application process, you should have these on hand as well. You should also include something to make a few brief notes on. Give yourself time. A little nervousness helps, and employers will expect it. You'll probably be less nervous if you take the time to adequately prepare for the interview. Make sure you arrive earlier than necessary to give yourself time to compose your thoughts. Get the name of the interviewer, and try to relax. B. During : Handling Questions Be specific and give examples. Move from vague answers to concrete answers by giving examples of the qualities and skills you possess. Answer questions by stating the Situation the role you were in, Action what you did, and Results what you achieved. Take time to think about your answer. It's not often that the interviewer will throw you a trick question, but it's better to pause for a second and consider your answer. Try taking a deep breath before speaking to give yourself time to consider your answer. If you have any doubts, ask for clarification about what the interviewer is trying to get at. Know yourself. Take some time to reflect on your goals and aspirations; your short-term and long-term plans. A favourite question is "Where do you see yourself in five years?" You should be able to show that you have given some thought to this type of question. Selfawareness also includes acknowledging the fact that you have weaknesses, but you are taking positive steps to address them.

Emphasize your goals and strong points. Sometimes the resume doesn't adequately elaborate on the skills you possess. Now is the time to reiterate these points and how they apply to the position. Dont apologize for your shortcomings stay focussed on your strengths and suitability for this position. Keep your answers short. Make sure to answer the question fully, but do not talk just to fill silence. The interviewer will prompt you if they need more information. However, dont be afraid to ask if you need more information or wish to clarify your answers. Ask your own questions. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the organization, such as future prospects for the firm, what a typical day is like, etc. Ensure you are having them answer your questions about their organization. This is your chance to see if they are a good fit for you. One thing to keep in mind is that these questions should be relevant ones - questions for the sake of asking questions waste your time and the interviewers time. Be honest and be yourself. C. After After the interview, you should take some time out to review what happened - the questions asked and your answers, etc. It's best if you can sit down and make some notes afterwards. If you get a second interview it will help to jog your memory as to what you talked about, your initial reactions to the interview and the interviewer, questions you may have thought about after leaving the first interview, etc. If you don't get a second interview you can use this information to highlight areas that you can concentrate on for the next time. IV. Services we offer that can help One of the keys to developing good interview skills is practice. Business Career Services offers a Mock interview program in September and January to all current students in the School of Business. This is your chance to build confidence and practice your interview skills through a mock interview with a real recruiter. Our partners in the business community support this program by giving you realistic feedback and advice. Interviews are recorded, immediate feedback is provided, and the recording is available for you to review at home. Watch for notices in our newsletter and on the bulletin board for dates and times available. Our website has a section on Job Search Tools which includes links to sites with tips and suggestions for success in the interview. In our office, we offer a selection of information from organizations that conduct on-campus recruiting campaigns. The Winspear Library also has extensive information on organizations that recruit business students. Included in every job posted on our website you will find a link to the organizations website. In most cases a companys website is the very best and most current resource. However, using any or all of these resources to research before you apply and interview will prepare you and make you competitive.

V. Conclusion The interview is a two way street. Both you and the interviewer are "on show," and both of you have evaluations to make. The interviewer has taken time to prepare for the interview; to ensure you make the most of this opportunity you have to prepare as well.

Message from the Accounting Area Chair, Haskayne School of Business

To accounting students looking for positions with public accounting firms: I am writing to wish you good luck in your efforts towards beginning a career in public accounting. The precarious scales on which you all balance your already numerous responsibilities will, in the coming weeks, have the substantial weight of recruiting season added upon it. But I want you to remember that you are graduating from one of the premier schools of business in Canada. The Haskayne School of Business (HSB) is known for its commitment to high quality teaching, research, and community service. HSB graduates are therefore held in high regard. It is understandable that you may experience some anxiety as you embark on your career in professional accounting. However, your nerves should be tempered and your confidence bolstered by the knowledge that your concentration in accounting at the HSB has provided you with the necessary expertise for such a career. At the HSB, you have demonstrated the ability to successfully handle long assignments, difficult and sometimes ambiguous exams, and cases that simulate real situations. That ability to withstand pressure, I am confident, will help you in any environment. You should also know that your prospective employers are our partners in your education. They know our products, for they helped us shape them. According to data from the HSB Career Centre, even though in 2009 employment market for Haskayne graduates was not as favorable as in 2007, 96% of our accounting graduates who were contacted were employed within six months after their graduation. All of the major CA firms hired multiple students for positions in the last year, and I do not expect any less from them this year. Remember that you have something they need a zest for learning, knowledge of accounting, and growing business acumen. I have two final pieces of advice for you: first, be yourself. In your information sessions and interviews, relax and act like the young professional you are. Second, remember where it was that prepared you and gave you the opportunity to succeed. After signing that offer letter, remember to look back and help your HSB and ASA to become even stronger organizations. Good luck. MESSAGE FROM THE CAREER RESOURCES CENTRE

The Career Resources Centre is excited to bring to you the University of Lethbridge CA Student Recruiting Handbook. The handbook is a guide to the intense Fall recruitment of new grads, co-op and summer students interested in articling in Accounting firms. Each year in September and October, Accounting firms will submit postings for articling positions, screen applicants, interview and make offers for jobs that will begin in the next year. Imagine the feeling of securing a full time New Grad position or a Summer and Coop job by December! The challenge of Fall CA recruitment is that it begins almost immediately when you return to campus. st The postings are up on September 1 with deadlines only a few weeks later on the 23rd. You will need to have your resumes and cover letters ready to go, order transcripts and start preparing to meet employers. th The new Regional Meet the Approved Office event will take place on-campus, September 13 quickly followed by information sessions conducted by individual firms. These events are significant opportunities to interact with firm representatives. And all the while youre taking classes, completing assignments and exams. The pressure can be overwhelming!! ~ CA ARTICLING OCR PROCESS ~ STEPS FOR SUCCESS!

Check off the following OCR Steps for Success and you will be better prepared to understand and coordinate YOUR OCR PROCESS! Be informed, stay organized, and put your best self forward!

Step 1. LEARN ABOUT THE ON CAMPUS RECRUITMENT (OCR) PROCESS

If you are in Lethbridge, we recommend you attend an Accounting Recruitment Workshop in September through the CES office. Check the CES Calendar of Events on our website for scheduled times and locations. We are hoping to visit both the Calgary and Edmonton campuses in September but if you are unable to attend a workshop in person, the next best way to find out what OCR is all about, is to view the OCR Orientation Video, and read about OCR on the CES website: http://www.uleth.ca/ross/ces/students_ocr.html

Step 2. REGISTER FOR OCR WITH CAREER & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES (CES)
Sign-up formally by coming into the CES office to include yourself in the Accounting Recruitment Binder located at the CES desk. The CES office is located in Room B-610.

If you are on the Calgary or Edmonton Campuses, or a grad unable to sign-up in person, please E-MAIL the following information to CES and we will send an email confirmation of your registration: Include Accounting Recruitment in the subject line of your email First & Last Name + Middle Initial University of Lethbridge ID# Program Major & Campus location Year of Program &/or Graduation This information will be used only in the event that we must contact you regarding OCR and interviews, or to inform you of opportunities. Email: ces.students@uleth.ca or ces.graduates@uleth.ca

Step 3. VIEW JOB POSTINGS FOR ARTICLING POSITIONS - STARTING SEPT 1, 2010
To view the most up-to-date OCR postings. go to the CES Online Job Board which is possible through a partnership with WorkopolisCampus.com .

Register on workopolisCampus.com by clicking on pick your school & register here. Complete the online registration form and provide the U of L campus ACCESS code Select yes to receiving emails and information from workopolisCampus or CES, so that valuable job search & employment information can be forwarded to you on a regular basis. This will give you access to the U of L portion of the workopolisCampus site where CES posts all the positions received in the office (e.g. part-time, full-time, summer, volunteer and international).

You will know you are in the right place if you see the U of L LOGO in the top left corner of the page. If the logo disappears you are no longer on the right site. You can search the jobs in many ways to select a set of postings, however, be careful not to use too many criteria or your search will have minimal results. When searching be sure to use the advanced search button BELOW the campus bulletin board after you sign in. Search by individual keyword: OCR for all OCR positions including non-accounting positions Posted by University of Lethbridge includes all positions posted by our office Search by Category: Accounting for all Accounting positions including those not part of OCR

CAREFULLY read and follow all instructions found on the job posting regarding application processes, as companies have different requirements and procedures. You might be asked to apply directly to them online, while others may ask you to direct applications to the U of L CES Office in hard copy.

Step 4. ATTEND A CA MEET THE APPROVED OFFICES EVENT

This year the Institute of Chartered Accountants will be coordinating three regional events to be open to students from all institutions. These events will replace the meet the firm nights presented at specific schools in the past. The Alberta events will take place as follows: Meet the CA Training Office Events (See events section for locations and times) September 10: Edmonton Meet the CA Training Office September 13: Lethbridge Meet the CA Training Office September 17: Calgary Meet the CA Training Office

Meet representatives from several CA firms in a trade show format . Anyone who is pursuing a CA designation is welcome, including summer and Co-op applicants. Contact CES or consult the CES Website for further details: www.uleth.ca/ross/ces/recruitment.html Be ready to impress! Discuss your strengths, skills & questions with recruiters!

Step 5. SIGN UP & ATTEND EMPLOYER INFORMATION SESSIONS

Individual Accounting firms conduct information sessions on campus in September to meet students & promote their organizations. Most sessions take place on the Lethbridge campus, however, firms are also seeking to raise their profile on the Calgary and Edmonton campuses (Included in this handbook is a current list of events to-date). Fewer individual sessions this year are a result of the regional events. Employer events organized through CES will be posted on our website, on the UofL Notice Board, bulletin boards, in our column in the Meliorist newspaper, and in the CES office (B-610). Please sign up for sessions by E-mail or in person (Rm B-610).

AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO EDMONTON STUDENTS RE: Employer Info Sessions

The U of A Business Career Services (BCS) office invites U of L students to attend information sessions at the U of A. Regularly check the BCS Calendar of Events for current events: http://www.business.ualberta.ca/career-services/calendar/events.htm In all your dealings with Business Career Services (BCS) ensure you consistently self-identify as being from the U of L both to employers and to BCS office staff. See specific procedures below. Please follow the RSVP instructions on the BCS calendar of events and be sure to consistently self-identify as being from the U of L both to the employers and to our office staff. Make sure you also clearly identify yourself in any emails to BCS when RSVPing or making inquiries. If nametags are provided at any of the events, please note U of L below your name. Please be aware that when attending events at the U of A you are a guest of BCS. As a representative of the University of Lethbridge and for your benefit, a professional and respectful approach to the office, staff and employers will make a positive and lasting impression of you as a candidate. Business Career Services: 2-21 Business Building University of Alberta; 780.492.2166 (tel)

Step 6.

ORDER TRANSCRIPTS & BE PREPARED WHEN FIRMS REQUEST THEM

Most firms request a copy of your transcripts as part of your application. To order a copy of your transcripts, fill out a U of L Transcript Request Form and drop it off or fax it to the Registrars Office. You can order official transcripts that are sent directly to the employer or an unofficial transcript printed on special blue paper with the seal and signature of the Registrar. Employers will accept good, clean quality photocopies of these for your hard copy applications.

Dont leave request forms to the last minute! Order them early. For more information, check out: http://www.uleth.ca/ross/transcript.html Need Transcripts Immediately? You can print or attach an electronic copy of your unofficial transcript off The Bridge & indicate to the employer that you will forward them an official copy if needed. For online applications some employers will also accept self-reported grades, followed up with official documentation.

Step 7.

DEVELOP A STRONG RESUME & COVER LETTER FOR YOUR APPLICATIONS

Target the skills and experience relevant to the jobs you seek. Need Help? - Sign up for a resume/cover letter and interview workshop at the CES office &/or view the schedule of workshops available on the CES website: www.uleth.ca/ross/ces Not on the Lethbridge campus? We can arrange to help you over E-mail or by phone. In addition to your resume, cover letter, and transcripts, some firms may also request a CACEE form which can be downloaded through the CACEE website @ www.cacee.com or can be picked up at the CES office.

Step 8.

SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATIONS BY THE DEADLINE: THURSDAY SEPT 23/2010.

The deadline for all applications to be submitted to CA firms is Thursday, September 23, 2010. If you are required to submit applications to CES we will accept them until 12 NOON, September 23rd in order to courier them out for next day delivery to firms. Remember, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure that all requested information and documents are submitted to the employer by the application deadline, in the proper format, and to the specified location/office. So, carefully follow the specific instructions provided on each job posting. In your application please indicate your CURRENT LOCATION so employers are aware when they are scheduling interviews.

When instructed to submit applications to the CES office, please staple all materials in the top left corner (no folders or envelopes) and drop them off to our office which is open from M-F, 9 am noon and 1 4pm. If after hours, submit materials to the drop box located to the right side of the entrance doors. If you are not on the Lethbridge campus, we will accept applications by fax, mail, courier or email. If youre wondering about the best method, contact CES immediately. Deadlines still apply and it is your responsibility to ensure your information is received in a timely fashion.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO EDMONTON STUDENTS RE: Applications

Submit your applications through CES whenever possible, however, if Edmonton employers direct you to apply through the U of A, Business Career Services (BCS) will accept your applications through their office. BCS requests you follow their application procedures. In all your dealings with Business Career Services (BCS) ensure you consistently self-identify as being from the U of L both to employers and to BCS office staff Find following the U of A BCS processes for submitting applications: If the employer wants applications gathered in our BCS office, there are drop-off boxes and a checklist at our front counter to help students ensure their materials get to the right firm. Or ask our front counter staff we are glad to help. When submitting applications to the BCS office please staple all materials and submit to the drop-off box indicated on the posting. Do not submit materials in envelopes or folders! The drop-off boxes are located across from the elevators on the second floor of the Business building and inside the Business Career Services office (BUS 2-21).

STEP 9.

BE READY FOR THE JOB INTERVIEWS IF YOU ARE SHORTLISTED BY FIRMS

Applications collected by CES will be forwarded to the employer for pre-screening. If you are shortlisted you will be contacted either by the employer or by CES. If CES is setting the interview schedule we will email you to schedule a time. Please note that we will use your uleth email address so dont forget to check it during this timeframe. If you are not in Lethbridge we will do what we can to make arrangements with the employer to have you interviewed in Calgary or Edmonton. Interviews for OCR will begin on October 4. If you have been selected for an interview, respond quickly and request a time that works around your schedule. It is your responsibility to check your email and telephone answering machines often, as employers may attempt to contact you these ways to arrange interviews. Ensure your messages are professional and check them often. Be sure to record the date, time, and location of the interview, and arrive EARLY.

Be prepared to communicate your strengths to employers with confidence. Sign up to attend a CES Interview Workshop or contact us if you need help preparing. For statistical purposes, the CES office/staff would be grateful if you would keep us informed of your interviews and offers that are made.

DECLINING OR WITHDRAWING FROM INTERVIEWS Withdrawing from or declining interviews should only be done under extenuating circumstances and as early as possible. This will allow time to adjust schedules and perhaps even provide other applicants an opportunity to interview. If you must cancel an interview, contact CES as soon as possible and we will notify the employer.

STEP 10.

BE READY FOR OFFERS --- IMPORTANT INFORMATION !!

All CA firms taking part in OCR have agreed to adhere to the CA accounting recruitment calendar that establishes specific timeframes for Fall recruitment (see dates below). Job offers will not be extended until after first and second round interviews are complete so you should have ample time to interview with firms who have shortlisted you. It is to your advantage to meet with all interested firms to ensure you are fully aware of your opportunities and can freely choose the firm that is the best fit for youyour values, lifestyle and work goals.

September 1 September 23 October 4 October 21

All job postings go live on post-secondary websites CA application deadline/job closing deadline First interviews commence CA offer date (co-op, permanent, summer) 8:00am MDT IMPORTANT! NO offers are to be issued by the firms prior to this date and time. The Offer Date ensures students have the chance to consider all of their options without the pressure of premature offers. During Fall recruitment if you receive an offer before this date, please inform CES

October 25

CA acceptance date Students must respond to ALL outstanding offers by this date and time From October 25 forward Employers are free to make offers on their own schedule as some articling positions may not have been filled. Candidates who have not yet received an offer should notify CES as firms still seeking applicants may contact the office.
th

SECOND ROUND:

GET INTO THE JOB SEARCH ROUTINE . Effective job search requires time and commitment! Try to work it into your daily schedule to stay on top of postings and deadlines. Ultimately, you are responsible for your search and your ability to stay organized will be key to your success. Take control of your work search, be proactive and get the competitive edge!! OCR postings are only a small number of the opportunities that exist. We encourage you to be proactive by extending your job search far beyond those employers who come to campus. During the Fall CA recruitment window from September to November, CA firms conducting off campus recruiting are still bound by the dates set out in the accounting recruitment calendar. Review the list of CA Firm Profiles as well as the list of Approved training offices found in this handbook to identify firms with potential positions.

Watch CES Jobs On-Line regularly Check out all the postings as some employers simply post their positions. Do a keyword search for OCR to target those participating in on campus recruitment. PREPARING FOR INTERVIEWS

Preparing ahead of time will help you be ready to describe how you have the technical, transferable skills and personal skills the employer is seeking. Research the company, know yourself (your skills and experience), use real work, life or school examples as PROOF, and if possible, bring samples of your work to further demonstrate the real world quality and evidence of your performance.

The main purpose of a job interview is:

for the EMPLOYER 1) A way to gain and confirm more direct information and understanding of applicants. This assists in determining each persons fit with the organization, its values, and its employees, as well as their ability to perform required duties and maintain the work integrity required for the position. 2) It is a chance for them to tell and sell you on their company and entice you to work for them if an offer is made. for the APPLICANT 1) A way to market their skills, abilities, experience and fit with the organization in a direct, in-person manner. 2) A way to gather valuable information about the company and position to help make decisions if offered a position.

A job interview is a BUSINESS MEETING where both you and the employer are considering making a mutually beneficial deal. It is a 2-way opportunity - YOU have skills to offer & THEY need someone to fill a need that exists in their team, their organization and their success. BE that person! BE prepared! BE ready for their questions and KNOW your information!

Consider yourself to be a knowledgeable CONSULTANT or RESOURCE PERSON who is meeting at a companys request to describe what you have to offer & how you can assist/fit with their company!

YOU EMPLOYER have the skills/qualities/ experience the employer needs, the desire to work for their company, & must be able to communicate this well

PROOF has a job opening, hopes you can meet their needs & wants to market the benefits of working for their organization

EXAMPLES

Treat each JOB INTERVIEW as an OPPORTUNITY to: learn something about yourself, the interview process, the world, etc. learn something about the company, the position, the work atmosphere, the location. improve your interview confidence and skills by gaining first-hand experience in the process.

INTERVIEWS ARE BEST PREPARED FOR BY 1 GATHERING INFORMATION: o

Review your skills, experience, abilities, knowledge, training/education, inspirations and goals to help you understand yourself and to be more able to speak naturally about your ability to perform in the position and fit with their company. Research the companys website, talk with people who have worked for them or who know about them, review the position, and understand their corporate projects, organizational structure, and values to help you evaluate your level of interest in the position/company. Anticipate questions and prepare strong responses using examples of your own experience in similar situations, utilizing required skill sets, working on similar tasks, and succeeding in challenging situations. Consider practicing your interview skills out loud, with a friend, with career advisor, or on videotape to observe responses, body language and voice tone. (see CES Interview Skills Workshop for help in preparing and be ready for Behavioral Description Questions)

2 KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT in the INTERVIEW PROCESS:

Phase 1) Establishing rapport and making a good first impression during the introduction phase: Smile, be confident, be up, offer a firm handshake, establish eye contact, and dont be afraid to make small talk. Use deep calming breaths and positive self-talk during the interview to remind yourself that you are prepared, confident and relaxed!

Phase 2) Exchanging of information when the employer asks the applicant a variety of questions, each with a deliberate purpose, that will assist in their decision making/hiring process. These include: Questions about your background, previous experience, education, strengths, weaknesses, work habits, commitment to the job, and skills sets that make you qualified for the position. Questions that reveal insight into your personality, interests, activities, values, long term goals, volunteer/community involvement, interest in the organization, etc, that might indicate an apparent fit with the staff team and organization in general. Questions about your ability to perform specific duties required in the position: knowledge of & experience in technical areas, how you cope with supervision, expectations of the organization, etc. Questions that reveal what you would do in a hypothetical situations (situational questions) Questions that reveal how you have handled past situations of a similar nature (behavioral descriptive questions).

Phase 3) The closing transition of the interview is when the employer has finished their questioning and invites you to ask any questions you may have. You should ALWAYS have good questions ready to ask the employer as this shows positive personal initiative and intelligence, a noticeable interest in the position/company, and it is expected. Ask questions about aspects you have a sincere interest in, as these will be more natural to remember and will show your confidence. Typical questions may include: if training is provided; what if any performance measures/reviews are in place; how the company views professional development; where does the company see growth in the future.

3 PRESENTING YOURSELF in STRONG & POSITIVE WAYS: o

Dress professionally and towards the conservative side. Look great! Plan the night before. Business suits and professional attire are appropriate for interviews with accounting firms. Avoid strong perfumes and deodorants (you never know when someone will have an allergy); jangling jewelry, facial piercings and anything that will distract the interviewer from your answers.

Be organized and know what to bring to the interview. Good advice is to bring a simple folder with: One or several copies of your resume, cover letter, application form (if any), transcripts, any reference letters you would like to offer, paper & pen to write notes if needed, study sheets to review, and several copies of your references, if they were not included in your resume.

Samples of your work that demonstrate to interviewers your strengths and past skill successes. These can be integrated into relevant responses to questions or can be left with interviewers for a period of time. This technique is called a career or skills portfolio and if prepared for and used well, it can make a positive impression on employers. (See the CES office to attend a Portfolio Workshop and/or get further information) Arrive early and know the location of your interview. Consider checking out the office/room number, bus routes, parking, and travel time in advance to ensure a stress free experience on the day of the interview. Interact positively with the receptionist as their impression is often sought.

After the interview, take time to write down your impressions of the experience, the questions/responses given, and areas/questions to prepare for in a second interview or in other interview meetings. Consider sending a thank you email or hand-written card to each member of the interview panel as is a very impressive job search strategy that may set you apart from other interviewed candidates. This is comprised of 2 or 3 short sentences thanking them for their time and mentioning your interest in the company and fit with the position.

INTERVIEW RESPONSES TIPS FOR SUCCESS!

Focus on your strengths and give concrete examples of skills and successes in your past. Know yourself, your skills, the company, the job description, and your goals. Be sincere, be positive and be yourself! Make answers brief and clear, usually 1-2 minutes maximum. This is helped by preparing in advance for relevant interview questions and rehearsing responses for easier recall under pressure. Avoid rambling and vague responses. Focus on your strengths and ask for clarification if needed. Take your time in answering questions. Pacing your interview responses and speaking slowly can add to the impact and clarity of your responses. It is acceptable to take a moment to think out your response and even take a small pause in between thoughts as needed.
