Objective
The newly introduced High Definition Projection Televisions, P9 Series, accommodate the 480i, 480p, and the 1080i Digital TV formats. They also function as complete NTSC TV receivers. Some of the models contain a digital tuner that allows the reception of digital TV broadcast as well as digital cable television, eliminating the use of a Set Top Box. Furthermore the digital tuner incorporates the OpenCable technology that interfaces between the cable service provider and the customer for subscription purposes. The High End models contain a PhotoViewerTM that allows the viewing of digital pictures taken with a digital camera. The information provided in this document is designed to assist the technician in determining the defective component or board while performing repair. The troubleshooting flowcharts, signal path diagrams and connector information should provide enough detail so that the technician can accurately determine which component or board is required to repair the product.

New Features
Digital tuner Built in Set Top Box The built in Set Top Box is designed to receive NTSC and ATSC television broadcast. The ATSC reception includes High Definition TV (HDTV) and Standard Definition TV (SDTV). Each consists of many formats. The well-known NTSC system is not included among the DTV formats. DTV is based on a new set of standards developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC). All formats used in digital TV exhibit a highly improved picture quality in conjunction with five channels of CD quality audio and one low frequency effects (LFE) channel. This new digital tuner also provides the NTSC video output for the main picture. It is a hybrid tuner that processes NTSC and ATSC terrestrial broadcast for reproduction on the TV screen. DTV transmission started in the fall of 1998. A total transition to DTV is to be completed by 2007. ATSC (Advanced Television System Committee) is the organization that governs digital television terrestrial broadcasting. The television broadcast is in digital form requiring the use of a digital TV tuner. OpenCable - Cable digital is a concerted effort by North American cable operators to: Provide next-generation digital cable-ready devices; Encourage supplier competition; Create a common platform for advanced interactive cable services; and Create a retail hardware platform. One of the OpenCable project's goals has been to standardize the cable network interface, which will help to enable a retail market for competitively priced digital cable products (e.g., integrated DTVs, set-top boxes). As part of this effort, the OpenCable specifications define an interface to a removable CableCARD module that separates the cable operator's proprietary conditional access system from the retail digital cable device (a "host"), thereby enabling portability of the host to other cable networks. The OpenCable project has developed two key sets of specifications: one for hardware components, and one for software components. The hardware specifications allow a digital cable product that is sold at retail to provide portability. It includes specifications for a host device, a copy protection system including security and user authentication, and a CableCARD module/host interface. This means that if a consumer purchases a set-top box or an integrated DTV in New York and then relocates to Los Angeles, that set-topbox or integrated DTV will be operational with the new regional cable provider's equipment.

The software component of the OpenCable project is called the OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP) specification. OCAP provides an open interface between the manufacturer's operating system and the various applications that will run within the host. This open interface will accelerate application development and deployment of new interactive television (iTV) services. Currently, developers of iTV applications and services must rewrite their programming for each proprietary host platform upon which the applications and services will run. OCAP addresses this challenge by providing a standard set of application programming interfaces (APIs), so that any application may be deployed across the full range of OpenCable host devices. Retail manufacturers who build OpenCable devices may be assured that their devices will run any applications that run on comparable set-top boxes leased by cable operators directly to their customers. These applications may include: Electronic program guides (EPGs); Impulse pay-per-view (IPPV); Video-on-demand (VOD); Interactive sports, game shows; Web access features such as e-mail, chat, instant messaging; Interactive games and services such as shopping (television commerce, or "TCommerce"), home banking, and personal video recorders (PVR). Clear Digital Picture - The unit incorporates a cable-ready tuner that allows cable subscribers to receive crisp digital TV signals without the need of a set-top box. It would also tune in over-the-air broadcasts for the handful of consumers who use rooftop antennas. Multiple Programs in 6MHz band - the allocated bandwidth for DTV transmission is at 6MHz. SD (Standard Definition) broadcast occupies much less space in the 6MHz bandwidth allocated for DTV broadcast. This results in the broadcast of up to six different programs per channel making terrestrial TV transmission more competitive than cable. High Definition Program - High definition programming such as 720p and, 1080i occupies much of the 6MHz bandwidth allocated for DTV transmission. This results in the broadcast of only one program per transmission. Although extensive compression techniques are used to reduce the content of the program, the high resolution and high frequency components of the high definition signal does not allow the broadcast of additional programs.

Figure 5

Invoking The Diagnostic Screen

The diagnostic screen is invoked via a sequence of keystrokes. It may vary on different models. A typical sequence would be following these steps rapidly: 1) Press MENU and VOLUP together 2) Press MENU and CHANUP together

11

Diagnostic Sections
There are four diagnostic sections on the screen: 1) FDC STATUS 2) SYSTEM 3) FAT STATUS 4) VIDEO / CHANNEL STATUS Each section will be described later in this document. The following portion outlines the sequence of events to observe when a CableCARD is in use.

CableCARD Insertion Checklist

1) After a CabIeCARD has been inserted, invoke the HOST diagnostic screen on the Panasonic host. The following items cover the status i nformation needed to o btain a c hannel map. 2) Under the SYSTEM section, verify that the POD Status is Present. 3) To the right of the Pod status indication, confirm that the value of x is zero. 4) Under the FDC Status section, verify that Lock Status is locked. The frequency should match that of the QPSK modulator of the cable system in use. 5) Under the FDC Status section, verify that Packets indicates a number greater than zero. Dep ending on the Cable System, the packet c ount may take seve ral minu tes before it begins to u pdate. It s hould continue to in crease per iodically during normal operation. 6) Under the FDC Status section, check the status of the tour data tables. a. VCM b. MMS c. DCM d. CDS Each of these acronyms represents a table specified in the OpenCable specification. Initially, a dash (-) is displayed to the right of each table. This indicates that the table has not yet been received. Once the table is received, the dash will be replaced by OK. When all four tables are received, the Map status will indicate Available. At this time, it should be possible to exit the HOST diagnostic screen, and select cable channels. Further information about the map can be obtained from the letters shown below: T = Total channels in the map D = number of channels that are NOT defined F = Number of channels with undefined frequency M = Number of channels with non-FAT Modulation Mode.

12

In a typical cable system, the value of T may be over 300, whereas values of D, F, and M are smaller, typically ranging from 0 to 50. These numbers will vary depending on the cable system configuration. Verify that the value for T is larger the values for D, F, and M. Exit the HOST diagnostic screen, and select a digital cable channel. 7) Invoke the HOST diagnostic screen on the Panasonic Host again. The next items in this checklist cover the things that are needed to get digital services. 8) Under the FAT Status section, verify that: a. The Mode is correct. (64QAM or 256 QAM) b. The Frequency is correct. c. The Lock Status indicates Locked 9) Under the Video / Channel Status section, verify that: a. The PCR Status indicates Locked. b. The PCR, Video, and Audio PIDs are numeric values. If the PID values are N/A, it indicates that PIDs have not been set. 10) Under the System section, note the value of Authorization status. This value comes from the CabIeCARD, and may vary depending on the CabIeCARD manufacturer. Typically, a value of 0x01 means the CableCARD is "able to decrypt", and a value other than that means "not able to decrypt". Some CableCARDs may indicate a value other than 0x01 when playing unencrypted (in the clear) video. The above steps list the basic requirements to obtain a channel map and to tune a digital service. If you are unable to obtain digital services on your Panasonic host, please take note of the data outlined in the above steps, as this will be useful information in debugging your problem.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. How can the host be set to the correct FDC Frequency? A. The FDC is controlled by the CabIeCARD. A CabIeCARD must be present for the FDC tuning process to begin. The CabIeCARD instructs the host to tune to a given FDC frequency. Any frequency-hunting algorithm comes from the CabIeCARD. In some CabIeCARDs, a CabIeCARD supplied diagnostic menu may allow the setting of an FDC frequency, or initiate the hunting process. To access the CabIeCARD supplied diagnostic menus; press OK while the HOST diagnostic screen is active.

13

Q. Why cant the host acquire any RF signal? A. Confirm that the cable is connected to INPUT A (Cable) on the Panasonic HOST. Also confirm that the input mode is set to Cable. This is done through the SETUP menu of the Panasonic HOST. Q. Why does the power light blink when the host is inserted? A. It may indicate a broken fan. Confirm the fan operation and connection.

Program Out Connection (PROG OUT)

You can connect a VCR to the PROG OUT terminal to record the program you are viewing on-screen. An external monitor can also be connected to the PROG OUT and TO AUDIO AMP terminals. Connect the VCR as shown below.

Figure 17

Procedure Connect the VCR to PROG OUT and TO AUDIO AMP terminals PROG OUT terminal display is the same as on-screen display. See the VCR instruction manual for further instructions for recording the program.

Notes: This TV contains Video and Audio Outputs for the purpose of recording television programming to VCR. Due to license restrictions, if a device (STB, DVD, etc.) is connected to the HDMI input of the TV, no video or audio output is allowed. Program Out signal may not be available when component input is selected for main picture. Program Out signal is available when receiving digital channel. However, all digital formats are down converted to composite NTSC video. When receiving digital or analog channel signals and the analog or digital CC is ON, Program Out connector will output open caption text in the NTSC video picture. If CC is OFF, only analog CC closed caption code is passed out from the Program Out connector. Certain program content output from the Program Out connector may have the Macrovision signal modification applied to its signal, preventing VCRs from recording this video signal.

Circuit Explanation
JG-Board (Photo Viewer Schematic)

Figure 27

The images are obtained from the SD or PCMCIA card inserted in the Photo Viewer card slot. IC6510 reads the contents of the SD card. IC6506-IC6509 read the contents of the PCMCIA card. After buffering, the JPEG information is decoded by IC6513 and converted into luminance and chrominance data. IC6512 contains the algorithmic (firmware) information for the operation of the viewer. IC6514 is a 64Mb SDRAM used as a temporary storage location for processing the picture information. The digital video output of IC6513 is then converted to analog by IC6516 and output to the DG-Board via the connector JG3/DG7. On the DG-Board the photo viewer information is selected and processed as any other video input.

DT-Board (Digital Tuner) Block Diagram

The built in Set Top Box is designed to receive NTSC and ATSC television broadcast. The ATSC signal reception includes High Definition TV (HDTV) and Standard Definition TV (SDTV). Each consists of many formats. The well-known NTSC system is not included among the DTV formats. DTV is based on a new set of standards developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC). This new digital tuner also provides the NTSC video output for the main picture. It is a hybrid tuner that processes NTSC and ATSC terrestrial broadcast for reproduction on the TV screen. The DT-Board also incorporates the OpenCable interface for use with a Cable Card. This system allows the reception of Digital Cable television without the use of a set-top-box.

Figure 28

The tuner of the DT-Board has the ability to tune in the 8VSB ATSC terrestrial TV broadcast and the 16VSB DVB cable television. The RF input of the DT-Board is antenna A and the type of reception desired is selected during the customer setup operation of the PTV. If a cable line is used without a CableCard, the unit proceeds to scan all available analog and digital channels. If a CableCard is used, the scanning process is bypassed since all cable related information is already programmed in the CableCard. If a terrestrial antenna is used, the unit may be instructed to scan only analog or digital terrestrial broadcast. The unit may also be instructed to scan all analog and digital broadcast channels. 56

The tuner of the DT-Board outputs a 44MHz IF (Intermediate Frequency) signal which is in digital form. The IF signal is then applied to a transport decoder circuit consisting of IC8008 to recover the Transport Stream. The MPEGII transport stream then enters the input selection IC, IC8009. The 8VSB or 16 VSB transport stream passes through the switch and enters IC8024. If a CableCard is used, the 16VSB TS signal enters the CableCard for decoding and channel mapping. Once the unit senses the presence of the CableCard, it automatically instructs IC8009 to switch its output to the CableCard. The transport Stream enters the video decoder IC8024. When receiving the data packets from the transport decoder, the video decoder de-packetizes the data, and extracts motion vectors. Video fields or frames are assembled and stored in memory circuits, IC8020 and IC8021, and output as digital component-signals. The Dolby Digital audio decoder circuit de-packetizes the data. Dolby Digital provides five discrete full-bandwidth channels for front left, front right, center, surround left and surround right, plus a LFE (Low Frequency Effect) subwoofer channel. For a full Home Theater sound experience, an external Dolby Digital decoder and a multi-channel amplifier must be connected to the Digital Audio Out jack on the PTV. Note: When an ATSC channel is selected, the output from the Digital Audio Out jack will be Dolby Digital. But, if NTSC channel is selected, the output will be LPCM. All TV related OSD information is generated by IC8024. Channel numbers, program channels, etc are generated within this IC. IC8024 is used as temporary storage location for the process of de-packetizing the AC3 audio. IC8018 contains the algorithmic (firmware) information for the operation of the digital tuner. Due to possible changes that may come up as the OpenCable service matures, the firmware information located in IC8018 may be upgraded by using an SD card. IC8015 contains the host identification number and stores the POD identification number of the cable service provider. IC8032 (See Figure 29) is used for analog audio inputs. All analog audio inputs are converted to digital and entered into IC8024 for conversion into LPCM. The digital audio is output via the Optical Audio Out jack for use with a Dolby Digital decoder and a multi-channel amplifier. Note: The unit may also be operated without the DT board installed.

57

If the unit fails to power up, a simple way to isolate a defect to the DT-Board is to disconnect it from the unit. Make sure all connections to other boards are removed before powering the unit. If the unit powers up and operation is restored, the DT-Board is possibly defective.

Figure 29

IC8031 converts the digital OSD output of IC8024 to analog and outputs to the DG-Board via pins 25, 27, and 29 of connector JK8007/A41. IC8035 converts the digital SD or HD video output of IC8024 to analog Y, Pb, and Pr video signals. The component video signals are amplified by IC8037 and output to the DG-Board via pins 10, 12, and 14 of connector JK8007/A41.

58

IC8034 converts the digital audio output of IC8024 to analog. The 2 channel stereo signal is then amplified by IC8036 and output to IC8044 for selection between analog TV audio and digital TV audio. The selected output is routed to the DG-Board via pins 24 and 26 of connector JK8007/A41.

HDMI = High-Definition Multimedia Interface

Figure 30

One connection
HDMI is the first all digital consumer electronics A/V interface that supports several uncompressed standard, enhanced and high definition video formats as well as existing multi-channel audio formats. One jack supports both video and audio information.

Clear digital picture quality

A High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) high definition picture source to the HDMI terminal of this PTV is displayed on the screen in its digital form.

Plug and Play

The HDMI/HDCP1 input can be connected to an EIA/CEA 8612 compliant consumer electronic device, such as a set top box or a DVD player equipped with an HDMI or DVI output connection.

Security (HDCP)
HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a specified method from Intel for protecting copyrighted digital entertainment content that uses the Digital Video Interface (DVI) by encrypting its transmission between the video source and the digital display (receiver). The video source might be a computer, set-top box, or digital versatile disc (DVD) player, and the digital display might be a liquid crystal display (LCD), television, plasma panel, or projector.

59

All authorized devices are given a set of unique secret device keys from the Digital Content Protection LLC, which is the organization that licenses technologies for digital content protection. During the authentication process, the receiver must demonstrate its knowledge of the secret device keys before content is sent. After the receiver acknowledges the keys, both devices generate a shared secret value that is designed to prevent eavesdroppers from stealing the content. After authentication, the content is encrypted and sent to the receiver that decrypts it. If the Digital Content Protection LLC determines that a set of secret device keys has been compromised, it places the keys on a revocation list and provides the authorized devices with a new set of keys, which is called renewability. During authentication, the transmitter checks the revocation list before sending any content. Backward compatible with DVI

DV-Board Block Diagram

Figure 32

The HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) input is a port designed to receive digital video and audio from a set-top box, a DVD player, or other digital devices. IC5003 converts the digital video to parallel analog Y, Pb, and Pr video and outputs to the A-Board via pins 12, 14, and 16 of the connector DV1/A51. IC5003 decodes the LPCM digital audio and outputs to IC5006. IC5006 converts the digital audio input to left and right stereo analog signal and outputs to the audio amplifier IC8036. The stereo signal then enters the audio switch IC5008 for selection between HDMI and DVI input. The Analog Audio IN jack is used for DVI audio input. The selected audio is output to the A-Board via pins 2 and 4 of the connector DV1/A51. Note: If the external device has DVI output only, use a DVI to HDMI adaptor cable to connect to the HDMI jack on the PTV. Also, connect the Audio Out signal from the external device (set top box or DVD player) to the Audio In jacks below the HDMI input. An HDMI-DVI conversion cable (TY-SCH03DH) is available at the Panasonic parts department. The HDCP (High-bandwidth digital content protection) circuit monitors the DVI signal for copyright protection. The EDID EEPROM, IC5001, allows for external control of the picture from the DVI source.

Video Signal Flow

Video Signal Input Selection

Figure 33

The PT-47WXD63 incorporates a digital tuner, capable of receiving NTSC, ATSC and DVB transmissions, and a NTSC tuner to allow the simultaneous viewing of two signals. It is also equipped with four NTSC Video inputs and three S-Video inputs. The digital tuner produces audio and video signals. The NTSC tuner produces video only, as it is the video source intended for use in the Picture in Picture mode. Composite video output of the digital tuner is applied to the A-board via pin 34 and subsequently to the DG-Board via pin 14 of the connector A32/DG2. Video signal produced by the sub-tuner (NTSC) is applied directly to the DG-Board via pin 2 of the connector A32/DG2. The luminance and chrominance output of the PhotoViewer is applied directly to the DG-Board via pins 5 and 7 of the connector JG3/DG7. The signal applied to the AV4 video input, located at the bottom of the front panel, enters the G-Board and passes through to the DG-Board without

63

alteration via pins 1, 2, and 4 of the connector DG4/G1. Video inputs 1, 2, and 3 of the H-Board are also input to the DG-Board via connector DG3/H1. IC3001 on the DG-Board selects the main video source and sub video source from the NTSC inputs. The main and sub video signals are output and applied to another video switching IC, IC3002. The Y, Pb, Pr output of the digital tuner is applied to the A-board via pins 10, 12, and 14 of the connector JK8007/A41 and subsequently to the DG-Board via pins 26, 28, and 30 of the connector A32/DG2. The component video signals from the H-Board are also input to IC3002 via the connector DG3/H1. The HDMI component signals of the DV-Board are also applied to IC3002 via the connector A32/DG2. IC3002 selects between NTSC, Component, and DVI video input signals. The selected main and sub video signals are then input to the image process circuit.

64

NTSC and 480i Signal Process

Figure 34

All main NTSC and 480i video signals are converted to digital data by an analog to digital (A/D) converter circuit located inside the Global Core IC, IC4001. The comb filter in IC4001 converts the composite video signal of the main picture to Y and C separated video data. S-Video, which is already Y/C separated, simply bypasses the comb filter. The chroma information is then applied to the chroma demodulator circuit that separates the color signal into Pb and Pr data. The component signal, which is already Y, Pb, Pr separated, simply bypasses the comb filter and chroma demodulator circuits. IC4001 outputs the data to the global core IC, IC4002. IC4002 contains a line doubler circuit that halves the horizontal line period, doubling the horizontal frequency to 31.468KHz. Using IC4015 as a temporary storage area, IC4002 then converts the digital signal scan format from interlaced to progressive and sends the 10 bit signals to IC4501. The noise reduction circuit of IC4501 reduces noise and improves the picture quality. Using IC4502 as a temporary storage area, IC4501 converts the digital signal scan format from 480p to 540p. The horizontal frequency of the 540p signal is 33.75KHz, same as 1080i, therefore eliminating the need for a complex

65

horizontal processing circuit. The 10bit signal is then output to IC4001 for picture enhancement and digital to analog conversion. The RGB output of IC4001 and the OSD (On Screen Display) RGB output of the television MPU, IC1002, enter the RGB amplifier IC4011. A switching circuit combines the two RGB signals for display on the screen. The output of IC4011 is applied to the CRT neck boards and subsequently to the CRTs.

480p and 1080i Signal Process

Figure 35

If the incoming video is in the 480p and 1080i format, the main Y signal is converted to digital by IC4351 and output to IC4002. The A/D converter inside IC4001 converts the color signals to digital. The data of the color signals bypasses the comb filter and chroma demodulator circuits and enters IC4002. The 480p and 1080i signal formats go through IC4002 without alterations and are output to IC4501. The 480p signal is converted to 540p while the 1080i signal simply passes through the IC. The remaining process is the same as NTSC and 480i.

66

Sub Picture Signal Process

(See Figure 35) On the DG- Board, an analog to digital (A/D) converter circuit, located inside the Sub Global Core IC4002, converts the sub picture video signals to digital. The data is then applied to a comb filter where luminance and chrominance are separated. IC4502 processes the Sub video data for use in the PIP mode. In this mode, the main and sub video components are combined into one set of Y, Pb, and Pr component signals. The line doubler, located inside the IC, halves the horizontal line period, doubling the horizontal frequency to 31.468KHz. Using IC4015 as a temporary storage area, IC4002 then converts the digital signal scan format from interlaced to progressive and sends the 10 bit signal to IC4501. The remaining process is the same as NTSC and 480i.

Horizontal Output Circuit

Figure 36

Unlike HD television receivers of the past, Panasonic is no longer using different horizontal drive signals to display the ATSC formats. On the DG Board, the horizontal frequency of the NTSC, 480i, and 480p signals are all converted to 540p prior to their introduction to the D-Board. The horizontal frequency of the 540p signal is the same as the horizontal frequency of the 1080i signal. Therefore the complexity of the horizontal output circuit is greatly diminished as only one frequency is processed at all times. The 33.75KHz horizontal drive pulse from the DG-Board passes through the A-Board without alteration and enters the base of Q513 via pin 3 of the connector A2/D2. Transistors Q513 and Q512 amplify the Horizontal drive signal to the level required to drive transistor Q501. The horizontal drive signal is then applied to the horizontal driver transformer T501, which in turn drives the transistor Q551. The horizontal output transistor, Q551, drives the horizontal output transformer T551 and the horizontal deflection yoke (not shown here).

Power Supply Explanation

Figure 37

Standby Power Supply

The incoming AC voltage passes through the surge protector R2803 and enters the rectifier D2802 for conversion to DC. The output is then applied to the switching regulator IC2801 via pins 3 and 5 of the transformer T2801 as drain voltage. The startup circuit, located inside the IC, immediately starts the oscillation. A PWM signal is output at pin 5 of the IC to build and release energy from the transformer T2801. After the power supply starts running, the power for IC2801 is supplied to pin 4 via diode D2811. The AC output at pin 2 of the transformer is rectified and applied to pin 4 of the IC. IC2803 and IC2804 provide the feedback for voltage regulation. The output voltage at the collector of IC2804 is monitored at pin 2 of IC2801 to control the oscillation and maintain a steady output of the power supply. Current and transformer sensing are achieved through pin 1 of the IC. Note: This power supply goes into operation upon connecting the power cord to the AC outlet. It provides constant power to the DT-Board, which houses the CableCard. The cable service provider routinely upgrades the CableCard. To maintain constant communication with the cable company and receive this upgrade information, the standby circuit (not the main power supply) powers the DT-Board. 71

Main Power Supply

D-Board

Figure 38

The main power supply for the PT- 47WXD53 is contained on the "D" board. When the power switch is activated, transistor Q802 turns on to activate the relay RL801. AC is applied to the circuit via the relays RL801 and RL802. In its operation, the main power supply is similar to the main power supply introduced earlier in some Panasonic chassis such as the "P2 Chassis". It is a switch-mode converter with current and voltage feedback loops. AC is routed through RL801 and surge resistor R800 to the rectifier circuit D801. When the unit is turned on, an inrush of current occurs as capacitors are charged and other components reach the desired voltage level. The resistor R800 is used to absorb the initial excess current, transforming it into heat energy. After the initial current surge subsides, a DC voltage developed at the secondary of the transformer (not shown in the figure) turns on RL802 to shunt the resistor R800. This minimizes heat and increases efficiency. D801 rectifies the AC voltage into approximately 180Vdc, which is then applied to the drain of Q801 via the transformer T801. Startup Power is initially supplied to pin 7 of IC801 via the resistor R862. The voltage on pin 7 of the IC causes it to 72

oscillate and output a PWM pulse to drive the switching transistor Q801. After the power supply starts running, the power for IC801 is supplied by pin 1 of T802 (see figure 39). As the transistor Q801 switches on and off, energy is built and released from the transformer. Note: The operation of the power supply is the same as that of power supplies introduced by Panasonic in earlier chassis such as the P2 Chassis. For more information on its operation visit the Panasonic Technical Resource web site.

The 20V and 20V sources

The 20V and 20V sources are used to power the convergence and vertical he output circuits of the unit. The diode D828 and D829 convert the AC supplied by the secondary windings of the transformer T801 to DC voltages.

The 140V source

The 140V source supplies power to the horizontal output and velocity modulation circuits of the TV. It is also used to provide voltage feedback for the power supply regulator. The diode D825 converts the AC supplied by the secondary windings of the transformer T801 to 140Vdc.

The Audio 20V and 20V sources

The 20V and 20V sources are used to power the audio output circuit of the unit. The diode D830 and D831 convert the AC supplied by the secondary windings of the transformer T801 to DC voltages.

The 20V source

The 20V source is used extensively in the A-Board. It is applied to several regulator circuits to create other voltages. The DG-Board, tuner, A/V select ICs, and the audio BBE IC use these voltages. The diode D827 converts the AC supplied by the secondary windings of the transformer T801 to 20Vdc.

T-Board 10V source

The 10V source of the T-Board is primarily used by the DT-Board. It is also regulated to 7.7V standby voltage for use by the DG and DT boards. The diode D2813 converts the AC supplied by the secondary windings of the transformer T2801 to 10Vdc.

T-Board 30V source

The DT and DG boards use the 30V source of the T-Board. The diode D2814 converts the AC supplied by the secondary windings of the transformer T2801 to 30Vdc.

The transistor Q854 monitors current of the 140V source. Excessive current causes the voltage drop across R857 and R858 to increase. As a result, the voltage at the base of Q854 becomes more negative as compared to its emitter. The transistor turns on and its output goes high. This DC level enters the DGBoard via pin 15 of the connector D2/A2 and pin 53 of the connector A31 causing the MPU to activate shutdown and turn off the AC Relay RL801.

LED Blinks Once (Vertical Protection)

Figure 43

A concentration of the electron beam on one spot of the CRT's phosphor, or a deflection of the electron beam onto the CRT's neck due to a loss of vertical could damage the CRT. The vertical Pump-Up pulse is rectified by the diode D407. The resulting DC voltage charges the capacitor C413. As long as the charge is sufficient, the transistor Q406 remains on. A loss of or a drop in the charge level causes Q406 to turn-off. This sends the voltage at its collector to the DG-Board via the diode D409, pin 15 of the connector D2/A2, and pin 53 of the connector A31 causing the MPU to activate shutdown and turn off the AC Relay RL801.

The voltage at its output enters pin 58 (SOS2) of the MPU IC1002 causing it to activate shutdown and turn off the AC Relay RL801.

The transistor Q7060 monitors current of the 20Vdc source. Excessive current causes the voltage drop across R7060 to increase. When the voltage drop becomes sufficient, the transistor turns on and applies DC to the voltage divider consisting of R7063 and R7064. The transistor Q7061 monitors current of the -20Vdc source. Excessive current causes the voltage drop across R7066 to increase. When the voltage drop becomes sufficient, the transistor Q7061 turns on. This causes Q7060 to turn on. When Q7060 is triggered on either by Q7061 or by the voltage drop across R7060, it applies a DC voltage to the voltage divider network of R7063 and R7064. The DC level at the node of R7063 and R7064 causes D7060 to conduct. This voltage enters the DG-Board via pin 11 of the connector D2/A2, and pin 51 of the connector A31 causing the MPU to activate shutdown and turn off the AC Relay RL801.

Figure 46

This protection circuit is incorporated to ensure viewer safety and to safeguard against CRT damage and catastrophic failures. The Heater Pulse from pin 2 of the flyback transformer T551 is used to sample the high voltage level. The pulse is rectified, filtered, and applied to a voltage divider network that consists of R521 and R522. The DC sample is applied to a sensing circuit inside IC701 on the DBoard via the resistor R1509. IC701 monitors the DC sample at its pin 3 and compares it to the reference voltage at pin 2. An undesired voltage increase at pin 3 causes the circuit's output at pin 1 to go high. D1503 clamps the output of IC701 to keep excessive voltage from reaching the MPU, IC1002, of the DGBoard. This output voltage is input to the DG-Board via pin 5 of the connector D4/A4, and pin 7 of the connector A31. This causes the MPU to activate shutdown and turn off the AC Relay RL801.

The introduction of the digital tuner and the Cable module application has made it necessary for Panasonic to install a fan in this CRT based projection TV. The fan is installed to circulate the air and cool the unit. Note: The fan only works when there is a CableCard present in the unit. 1. First check that the receiver is not operating in the service mode. 2. Insert the CableCARD (POD). 3. Please check that the fan on the back of the set is turned ON. IMPORTANT: If the fan is disconnected accidentally, damaged and does not turn ON when the module is inserted, the PTV will automatically be set in protection mode and it will shut down. Connect the fan correctly or replace it with a new one. 4. A sign on the screen with instructions should appear indicating that the CableCARD has been inserted. 5. Check the current software version of the receiver by pressing the following sequence rapidly on the front panel: VOLUME UP and MENU buttons at the same time, then CHANNEL UP and MENU buttons at the same time. The fan runs at a constant speed. The Micro-controller (IC1002) monitors the operation of the fan. When the fan is operating pin 3 of the connector H2 is low. If the fan is disconnected or defective, pin 3 of the connector H2 goes High to alert the Main micro-controller IC1002. This DC voltage is input to the DG-Board via pin A14 of the connector DG3. This causes the MPU to activate shutdown and turn off the AC Relay RL801.

Spot Killer
220V Heater

Figure 48

The spot killer circuit is used to eliminate the bright spot that remains on the CRT after a television receiver is turned off. During the operation of the unit, the 20V line and the rectified AC voltage of pin G1 of the CRT socket integrate to turn on transistor Q303. When this transistor is on, Q301 turns off allowing the capacitor C301 to charge to the full potential of the 220Vdc source. When the unit is turned off, the 20 Volts line goes away and the transistor Q303 turns off causing its collector to go high. This high causes transistor Q301 to turn on and shunt the 220 volts source to ground. This effectively provides a path for the discharge of capacitor C301 and the grid voltage (G1) of the CRT socket.
