ST.

COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH August 14, 2011 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
Faith and Love Make a Real Christian It is easy to use the name Christian simply because one is baptized or has professed faith in Jesus Christ. But it takes more than a name and profession of faith on the lips to become a real Christian in practice. The true believers everyday life should make Gods presence and work visible and felt in the world. There are others who are not identified as Christians in name, but their lives are proof of their belief in the goodness of God. The Canaanite woman in todays gospel is a good example of this truth. The Poor Woman Evangelizes Us In the Gospel today, the Canaanite woman, who is not among Gods chosen people, emerged as a true believer who convinced Christ of her faith in God and love for her daughter. She endured all the insults and harsh words from Christ himself and with humility and persistence begged for help. Jesus was amazed at her great faith that led to the healing of her daughter. Instead of Christ preaching to the woman, this poor peasant woman taught us all to persevere in faith, endure challenges and believe that the love of God is for all people of goodwill. God reads the heart and sees deeper into our being rather than just looking into our social and external qualities and affiliations. MY APOLOGY Last weekends bulletin had an error in the Pastors corner. The statement FAITH controls and paralyzes us should have read as FEAR controls and paralyzes us and prevents us from being creative.

Got Little Ones?

St. Columba offers free childcare during Sunday morning Masses. We accept infants and toddlers through age five. We have plenty of toys and games to keep them busy and entertained while parents attend Mass.
