The POWERLOGIC EGX is an Ethernet-based device that provides a transparent interface between Ethernet-based networks and field devices. Field devices include meters, monitors, protective relays, PLCs, trip units, and other devices that communicate using MODBUS, JBUS or POWERLOGIC protocol. The EGX uses MODBUS/TCP protocol to access power monitoring information across a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN). This capability allows the use of power monitoring software to access information from devices for data collection, trending, alarm/event management, harmonic analysis, and other functions. The two models are:
EGX200. This unit is an Ethernet (MODBUS/TCP) to serial gateway. Serial protocols include MODBUS RTU, POWERLOGIC, and Jbus. It has one twisted pair Ethernet port and two serial ports. One serial port is RS-485. The second serial port is configurable for RS-232 or RS-485. EGX400. In addition to the functionality of the EGX200, the EGX400 has a 100 MB fiber optic Ethernet port and nonvolatile memory. Users can store custom web pages to view real time status, energy, and power quality from the connected devices. See the EGX400 reference guide 63230-314-202 for details.
Both EGX models have web server functionality that let you remotely configure and troubleshoot both Ethernet and serial communication parameters.

You can upgrade firmware on both EGX200 and EGX400 models using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). We recommend periodically checking with your local sales representative or the POWERLOGIC website to see if a firmware upgrade is available. With the EGX400, you can also use FTP for storing and deleting web pages in the units internal memory. Refer to the reference guide 63230-314-202 for details on creating web pages for storing on the EGX400. This procedure can be used to upgrade the firmware or send new web pages. When upgrading firmware, you send the firmware file egx_xxxx.bin (where xxxx represents the version of the firmware upgrade). To determine the firmware version currently in the EGX, check the Login or Diagnostics pages. To use File Transfer Protocol (FTP): 1. Access DOS on your computer. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. NOTE: The path shown is typical for the standard Windows Office XP interface. 2. Change to the directory where the files to be sent are stored. For this example type: cd egx and press Enter.
3. Type: ftp and the IP address assigned to the EGX and press Enter. You should receive the message Connected to [IP address] indicating you are now in an FTP session.
63230-314-208A1 9/2003
4. At the User <IP address:<none>>: prompt, press Enter. 5. At the Password prompt, enter the administrator password (admin is the default password until the administrator changes it). 6. At the ftp prompt, type send [filename] and press Enter to initiate the ftp transfer. (In this example, we entered send 1_Energy.htm to send a custom page to an EGX400).
NOTE: Limit filenames to eight characters plus a three-character extension. When the send is complete, the ftp prompt displays again. If you are updating the EGX with new firmware, it will reboot at this time to start executing the new firmware.
This example uses the send command. Both the EGX200 and the EGX400 support this command. If you have an EGX400, you can also retrieve (get) a file from the EGX400, modify it, and send it back to the EGX400. The EGX400 supports all the following FTP commands:
Command
dir get send del
Description
Lists all existing files in the EGX. Gets a file and transfers it to your PC. Sends a file from your PC to the EGX. Deletes a file out of the EGX
7. If you have another custom web page to transfer to the EGX, type send [filename] and press Enter. If you are finished transferring files, type quit and press Enter to exit the FTP session.
Many devices in a power monitoring system do not have the ability to record data in nonvolatile memory within the device. Instead, they rely on software on a networked computer to request data from devices on a scheduled

basis. While network reliability is constantly improving, it will never be as reliable as a local connection.
The EGX400 can log data at predefined intervals from up to 32 serially connected devices. The unit stores the recorded data in non-volatile FIFO (First In First Out) files. Each file will record up to 38 days of data at 15-minute recording intervals. Recording intervals of 30 and 60 minutes are also supported. Setting the interval to 30 or 60 minutes increases the number of days of data that are stored. You can view the logged data with a standard web browser and retrieve the data using FTP or Microsoft Web Query (HTTP). The EGX400 ships from the factory with device profiles for standard Schneider Electric monitoring and protective devices. The following devices are supported:

2. Enter the address of the device. 3. Select the corresponding device type. 4. Select Interval for the logging method. NOTE: To log data from a MICROLOGIC trip unit, select "interval" for either the protection module (offset = 100) or the metering module (offset = 200). Refer to the MICROLOGIC device integration bulletin (63220-080-200) for more information. 5. Click the appropriate Update COM1/2 button to update. 6. Click Home and click Advanced Setup. 7. On the Advanced Setup page, select 15, 30, or 60 minutes for the logging interval. 8. To verify that logging is working, wait at least one log interval, launch Internet Explorer, and enter the device URL /dev###i.htm, where ### is the numerical address of a serial slave device being logged (for example, 10.10.10.10/dev001i.htm). NOTE: We recommend that you disable logging during EGX400 configuration, but this is not required. Logging is Enabled displays at the bottom of the Device List page when logging is enabled. Select None for the logging interval defined on the Advanced Setup page to disable all logging.
Viewing
The data logged from each device is displayed in a web page in a time-trend chart format. The time-trend chart is preconfigured to display data from the Last Full Day, Last Full Week, or All Data. Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher is required for this feature.
