Introduction

About ICICI Bank:

ICICI was established by the Government of India in the 1960s as a Financial Institution (FI, other such institutions were IDBI and SIDBI) with the objective to finance large industrial projects. ICICI was not a bank - it could not take retail deposits; and nor was it required to comply with Indian banking requirements for liquid reserves. ICICI borrowed funds from many multilateral agencies (such as the World Bank), often at concessional rates. These funds were deployed in large corporate loans.
All this changed in 1990s. ICICI founded a separate legal entity -

ICICI Bank which undertook normal banking operations - taking deposits, credit cards, car loans etc. The experiment was so successful that ICICI merged into ICICI Bank ("reverse merger") in 2008.
ICICI Bank now has the largest market share among all banks in retail

or consumer financing. ICICI Bank is the largest issuer of credit cards in India. It was the first bank to offer a wide network of ATM's and had the largest network of ATM's till 2009, before SBI caught up with it. ICICI bank now has the largest market value of all banks in India, and is widely seen as a sophisticated bank able to take on many global banks in the Indian market. The bank is expanding in overseas markets. It has operations in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada. It acquired a small bank in Russia recently. It has tie-ups with major banks in the US and China. The bank is aggressively targeting the NRI (Non Resident Indian) population for expanding its business.

ICICI Bank set up its international banking group in fiscal 2002 to cater to the cross border needs of clients and leverage on its domestic banking strengths to offer products internationally. While liberalization and reforms have thrown up a few challenges, it has also created opportunities for banks to increase revenues by diversifying into investment banking, Insurance, Credit cards, Mutual funds, General Insurance, depository services and Cross-sell the main mantra for success of ICICI Bank and target number one (1) in India and five (5) in the world by 2010. with the emergence of e-commerce, the way in which banking is presently conducted would undergo a radical change. Future competition among Banks will be essentially based on the twin platforms of the technology saviness and ability to attract talent Telephone ad Internet banking will gain importance and the future will see the emergence of Internet driven operations without a broad-based branch network. To take advantage of the opportunities thrown open by the liberalization and reforms and at the same time to meet the challenges posed by the same the bank has introduced the following features. This would help the bank to penetrate the market further and reach non banked rural people. Apart from the Indian operations, the bank is eyeing the international markets. Giving emphasis mainly on rural Market, Small and medium enterprise group and there is huge investment requirement for the people of Orissa as it is a industrial sector , people want to invest more in financial products. So ICICI Bank should give more focus on rural as well as small and medium group people as they are the prospective investor of ICICI Bank.
