PAPER 1 READING
Part 1
For questions 1-6, read the text and choose the correct answer A, B, or C. Mark the
answers on your answer sheet.
Charles and Alice Carpenter had ten daughters, two sons and numerous
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This makes the Carpenters the perfect subjects for
A Family Century. The four-part series of programmes shows the family’s story from
Charles’ and Alice’s wedding in 1900 to a big family party in 1999.
At first, producer and director Kate O’Driscoll wanted to film a famous family, but
she couldn’t find a suitable one. Then she met the Carpenters that amazed her. The four
remaining Carpenter sisters seemed to be excellent storytellers with astonishing memories.
The series starts with Madge, Joyce, Sheila and Aline remembering their schooldays in the
1900s. Madge was the only one to go to a good school, which made her look down on her
sisters. She calls Joyce ‘a pudding’, while, in return, Joyce says Madge is ‘bossy’.
This series is so valuable because the women’s experiences are shown side by side
with the social and economic conditions of the day. A Family Century is an enjoyable slice
of social history which should not be missed.
Part 2

11 In California, children up to the age of six must use child seats in cars.

13 A family group has said Ms. Spears’ actions were understandable.
14 The LA Police Department said the matter is now finished.
BRITNEY SPEARS ADMITS BABY DRIVING MISTAKE
Pop singer Britney Spears has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons again, this
time for driving her SUV with her four-month-old son seated on her lap.
Ms. Spears has admitted that her actions were dangerous. However, she has blamed
the paparazzi for being aggressive toward her. She said the photographers follow her every
move. She added that she feels she is always trying to escape from them. Ms. Spears
claimed she instinctively put her son between her and the steering wheel in an attempt to
avoid a waiting “pack” of “aggressive” cameramen. The agency that took the pictures
said: “These pictures were taken in a very peaceful context, in which photographers
exhibited no aggressive behavior.”
Spears may have to go to court for breaking traffic safety laws. California law
requires children to sit in a child-safety seat until they are at least 6 years old or weigh 27
kg. A police spokesperson said Ms. Spears knew this and may have to pay a penalty. He
said a deputy sheriff had already visited Spears’ Malibu home. The Los Angeles
Department of Children and Family Services asked the police to question Ms. Spears. The
group is angry at the dangerous example set by the singer. The matter is now in the hands
of the LA Police Department.
