The Town recently began operating the newly constructed wastewater treatment plant.
The new plant a state of the art facility, with a higher capacity that will accommodate
growth in the town for years to come, and has significantly improved the quality of the
waste water discharged to the Bow River. The Town was obligated to meet a higher
environmental standard, imposed by the Alberta government. As a result of the new
plant, bio solids are extracted from the system and require disposal.
The disposal of the bio solids has become a challenging and a costly effort; currently in
the $6,000.00 per week range. The Town is currently looking at alternatives to reduce the
cost of the disposal. Additionally, the budget for the 2011 sewer program is $4,875,000.00,
which covers the cost of operating the plant.

The Town constructed a waterline from Calgary to supply high quality water to the
community, which was completed in 2010. A substantial portion of this project was funded
through a provincial grant, however, the Town was responsible to fund approximately 13%
of the total cost of the $53,000,000 project. In addition, the cost of the water was in-
creased by the supplier, (the City of Calgary), at the beginning of the 2011 year. The Town
is required to repair and replace obsolete and aging water distribution infrastructure, and
additionally, to provide new infrastructure to accommodate the growth of the town.

Movie under the stars

The Children’s Wish Foundation hosted its first, and hopefully annual, Movie Under the Stars night.
The Ag. Society donated the grounds and the movie, Rio, took place at the Grandstand. Approxi-
mately 850 people attended, far exceeding the original goal of 300 to 400 people. Through the raffle,
50/50, donations and concession they made approximately $5,200.
As with any new event there were a couple hiccups. FreshAirCinema had issues with their projec-
tor. Backstreet Productions of Strathmore provided them with a projector so the show could go on.
FreshAirCinema have offered a free movie night, however details need to be worked out regarding
licensing and other costs that may be incurred. Children’s Wish wants the night to be free and don’t
want people to be expected to give donations for another event, so there are still fine details to be
worked out. Rhonda Sarah Robin Brandi
Once organizers know more about another movie night the information will be updated on their Face-
book event Movie Under the Stars.

gate. Right photo: Mary (left), and Isla Mackay. Isla, 3, had her face painted before finding a seat to
