From the Executive Director... From the President...
This summer I
thought it would be
nice to offer 5 tips
that will help make a
seniors life easier.
We are a society of
go go go.... We are
often so busy that
we dont think of
how much time and
energy it takes to do simple tasks. We just do them.
For our senior population, it can become very daunting
doing the everyday chores. Here are five tips that may
make a difference in a seniors day to day activities.
1. With arthritis affecting so many, buy larger items
that do not require removing twist on caps. Flip tops
make it so much easier for opening and closing.
2. For Bathing buy liquid soap and install a shower
bench. This makes it much easier for them to
maneuver and they dont have to worry about dropping
the soap.
3. These new TV remotes have enough buttons to
operate a small city. Buy a remote that has large
buttons that are easy to read.
4. If your senior is using a walker, invest in a tray. This
helps them to feel a little more independent to do
things without someones help. Another concern with
walkers are area rugs.
5. Finally if your senior will be traveling this summer,
always bring extra medication. For example if you are
going away for a week take an extra week with you.
Also keep a list of all medications when traveling, just
in case something would happen.
I hope that you found these tips to be helpful. At
Berkeley Senior Services we are always looking for
ways to improve the lives of our seniors. If you are
looking for ways to give back to your community, we
always have openings at Berkeley Senior Services.
Whether it is delivering a meal, dancing at a birthday
bash or offering to teach a class, we always have room
for more volunteers. Remember my challenge, Get
involved with a senior and make a difference to
someone who has made a difference for you!

Senior Spotlight
Take a walk with Nydia Morris
Nydia was born in Asheville, North Carolina in
1931, the youngest of six children. Her father
died when she was three years old, and the
family moved to Shelby, NC, to live in the house
next door to her grandmother. Her mom went to
work in a factory to support her children. We
were poor, but we had love and the simple
pleasures of life.
My grandmother was a happy Christian
woman. She had cows, chickens, pigs, a dog and
a bird. She had a beautiful flower garden and a
large vegetable garden. Since my mother
worked, I spent time following my grandmother
around. I learned about the animals, flowers
and vegetables. She also taught me how to live
life and be content with what I had, and to thank
God for His blessings!
My grandmother had twelve children, so I had
many cousins, aunts and uncles. I grew up
during World War II. We made candy and
knitted socks to send to my brothers, cousins and
uncles who were in the service. I wrote V letters
to them and we prayed for their safe return. All
of them came home with minor wounds.
After the war years, things improved. We spent
our vacations at Carolina and Myrtle Beach. We
packed picnics and went to the beautiful
mountains of North Carolina.
When I was twenty years old, I invited a friend
to go with me to Baltimore to visit my sister.
While we were there, we went to Bainbridge,
Maryland to visit her cousin, who was in the Navy.
Two years later, I married that sailor! We were
married for fifty-five years. He passed away in
August, 2008.
We raised three daughters, and I was a stay at
home mom. When I went to school, my mother
worked from 2:00 until 10:00 pm. She was there
to send us off to school and when we came home
for lunch, but when we came home after school,
she was working. My grandmother kept an eye on
us, but I missed my mother.
When our daughters were growing up, I said,
Lord willing, I want to be at home and spend as
much time with them as possible. They were a joy
to us, and I am happy to have so many memories
of the times we spent together. Our children
grew up, married and had our grandchildren. All
have been precious.
My hobbies and interests have changed over the
years. We have camped, fished, sewed, cooked,
planted flowers, but my passion is walking.
Every day for years, I have walked as much as five
miles a day. Walking alone gives me time to give
God the Glory for all His beautiful creation.
Walking with a friend gives me time to share my
joys and my sorrows and everyday events.
Another one of my interests is the birds I see on
my walks. I have seen scarlet tanagers, blue
birds, pileated woodpeckers, finches, hawks and
others. This spring, I saw my first flock of cedar
waxwings in a tree in my neighborhood!
When you make walking a habit, the health
benefits are many. It improves the body as well as
the mental attitude. Diet along with walking helps
me control my blood sugar. I am careful about
what I eat and the size of the portions of food. If I
eat more than I should, I take a walk to lower my
blood sugar.
Im 80 now and just started taking one pill a
day for my blood sugar. I know I will need to
continue to eat properly and walk daily to keep my
mind and body healthy. I want to continue to
enjoy my walk with my friends, the bird, flowers,
trees and my walk with the Lord.
I attend the Bible Study at the Senior Center and it
helps me with my walk with my Lord. Brother Bill
Marion was my first teacher now Pastor Brad
Tenney is teaching the class. We sing hymns,
pray for people and study the Bible. I have many
new friends in the study and look forward to
seeing them every Tuesday morning.

Are you struggling to keep your
exercise routine going in this hot
summer weather? Its wonderful to get
out of the gym and exercise outside.
Dont let high temperatures and humidity
drive you back into the air conditioning!
How can you continue to enjoy exercise
outside? Try doing it when the
temperatures are cooler-early morning or
late evening. Or you can head for the
water!
Water exercise offers many benefits:
* Burns calories
* Improves fitness
* Is low impact which lowers risk for
injury
* Provides resistance to help improve
strength
Water helps to support your joints and
ease the stress on muscles and bones,
making it a great choice for people with
arthritis. Its the perfect way to workout
under the summer sun and stay cool and
collected.
You dont have to be an Olympic
swimmer, or even a swimmer at all, to
exercise in water. For people who do
swim, swimming laps is a great aerobic
work-out. You can incorporate rest
intervals after each pool length while
you increase your stamina. You can use
any swimming stroke you like, crawl,
back stroke, breast stroke, side stroke, or
you can alternate strokes. Try to work up
to a workout of 30 minutes duration with
time out for rest if you need it.
If you are not a swimmer, walking or
jogging in water is another way to
exercise. This can be done in water waist
to chest deep. You can even do it using a
floatation device like a noodle or a life
jacket. The water keeps weight off your
joints, yet you get the benefit of a good
aerobic workout. Again, try to keep
moving for at least 30 minutes.
You can exercise on the side of the pool
too. Hold on to the side, extend your legs
behind you and kick. Then try sitting of
the side of the pool and kicking. You can
do this for 30 minutes or you can combine
the minutes from all of the above
exercises in total 30 minutes and you will
have an excellent and cool workout.
Water aerobics classes are available at
many health clubs and recreation centers.
Check with your local club for class
schedules. Water aerobics classes include
a cardiovascular workout plus strength
and flexibility exercises. The important
thing when it comes to exercise is, to
borrow the phrase from Niki: Just Do It!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
JOE FAIRBANKS
Joe Fairbanks has been working as a
kitchen volunteer at Berkeley Senior
Center for several months now. He
helps serve lunches to the seniors.
His brother-in-law, Will Gruel and
10-year old Uncle, Gideon Gruel,
came to pick up Joe after a days work
last week, and were glad to share
stories about Joe, and some of his
amazing accomplishments in his 28
years!
Will said Joe was his most famous
relative, because of his recognitions
over the years. For the past month, we
have displayed his art work on our
dining room wall at the senior center.
Come in and admire them!
Joe started drawing interesting
figures at a young age, around 5 years
old. He was inspired by cartoon
characters and other iconography, and
each is unique and creative. He drew
them with pencil to start, and then his
sister, Rebekah told him about a
coloring web site. Using his own
drawings, Joe plugs in colors on his
drawings by clicking!
Thanks to Joes mom, Julia Koerner,
sharing his artistic gifts, soon Joes
work will be on display in the
Governors mansion in Charleston for
many more patrons to view and
admire.
Joe is a member of Boy Scout Troup
#164, and he and his family are very
proud that he was able to earn his
Eagle Scout badge, in spite of his
disability. He was given extra time,
and worked hard for the last 15 years
to complete it. Joes project was
exploring state and public agencies
and their contributions and service for
disabled people in the work place. He
held a Disabilities Fair at his church,
the Spring Mills Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints, where
about 150 people attended. Fifteen
agencies participated in the fair with
displays representing their programs,
including Berkeley Senior Services.
Joe has a heart of gold, and is always
willing to give to others. An example
of this is when he lived in the
Philippines, serving a two-year
mission for his church, and the
earthquake disaster happened there.
Without hesitation, Joe donated his
entire suitcase of brand new clothes
for the needy victims. He was later
recognized on TV for his loving act of
generosity.
We are happy to have Joe Fairbanks

One of our Seniors has found a great way to save on gas, to

bringing over $3,000 in profit to the BSS nutrition program.
We especially thank the ladies that worked hard in the preparation and
production of this fun-filled event: Dana Knowles, Chair; C.J. May; Pat

We also extend a huge thanks to the sponsors: Brown Funeral Home,

The Annual Senior Prom
Beautiful decorations, a great meal and DJ Rick Rohn to get everyone up and dancing,
all came together for a great Prom. The Berkeley Senior Services 16th Annual Senior
Prom was a wonderful success. The Leadership Class from Hedgesville High School
transformed the Center into an Alice In Wonderland themed atmosphere. With the
White Rabbit and all his friends watching, the Seniors and students danced and had a
great time. There were dance contests for both couples and singles and door prizes
too. No Prom would be complete without the crowning of the King and Queen. The
Senior Queen was Marsha Maestry and the King was Larry Clark. The King and
Queen from among the Hedgesville High Students were Ben Guell and Kelsie
Vanderwijst.
This Prom is just one of the many events that go on at Berkeley Senior Services.
Thanks to the generous donations of time and talent of the Hedgesville High School
Leadership Class and the personal and business donations of the community, this
Prom was another great event at Berkeley Senior Services.

ADULT DAY SERVICES

Celebrating 16 Years of
Supporting Families in Adult Caregiving
bssads1@berkeleyseniorservices.org
Kathy McIntyre
Program Manager: Kathy McIntyre, BSW, LSW (5+)
Activities Coordinator: Katherine Donovan (5+)
Activities Assistants: Dale Bradfield(5+) , Ashley
Boarman, Carrie Carper, Carina Fawcett, Deana
Keplinger, Sarah Lung, Misty Mills, Lily Pryle,
Amanda Rickman, and Bethann Warren .
80% of caregiving is done by
unpaid, informal family or
friends.
Caregivers are burning out at
an alarming rate.
63% (about 2/3) of senior
family caregivers die first.
Statistics as these support why
Adult Day Services is available to
caregiving families. We provide
valuable services which include:
- Information about available
resources
- Care counseling & support
groups
- Training on caregiving issures
and skills
- Respite service so the
caregiver can receive that inportant
break in their constancy of care.
While the family caregiver is
running errands, enjoying queality
time with other family members or
friends or taking a much needed
nap, their assisted loved one can
enjoy interating with others in the
congregate program at the senior
center or with a respite worker in
the home. Family caregivers can
have peace of mind knowing their
loved ones are safely engaging in
activities they enjoy and that they
can do with the appropriate amount
of assistance.
So who is a family caregiver?
If a person spends time each
week shopping for a family
member or friend, taking them to
medical appointments, making sure
bills are paind and the house is
tended to, making sure one is eating
right, taking medicatios properly,
etc., that person is a caregiver.
While some people would argue
that these tasks are part of ones
marriage vows or part of being a
loving devoted child, these tasks
can become above and beyond
what is normal, negatively affecting
the health of the caregiver and
warrants the assistance of other
families, friends or community
professionals.
Adult Day Services in
particular is provided not to replace
the love and care one provides at
home; but enables caregives to be
able to do it longer. Yet, t does not
take long to realize the trained and
experiences ADS staff nd
volunteers (some who have been
here 5+ years) are caring and
competent. They are who make the
program work and make the day
meaningful, enjoyable and safe for
participants. If there are any
observed changes, concerns or
suggestions, a staff member is on
the phone to the family or takes
time to talk when seeing the family
at the end of the day. A new hire
who passes the reference and
background checks is well-trained
on-site before ever being sent to
provid in-home respite. Our
ultimate est question on needs to
pass is Would I trust this person to
take care of my own assisted
family member at home?
We also appreciate the
assistance our volunteers provide
to our day activity program,
memory classes & support group,
and/or with clerical and
promotional tasks including:

New Brain Fitness Course This Fall!
Go back to school this fall with Memory Minders and have fun
practicing various brain fitness games and exercises while
learning the importance of stimulating
different areas of your brain.
The past decade has provided a wealth
of information, encouraging all that
exercising the brain as we exercise our
bodies will help us live more enjoyable,
productive lifestyles. Some people
mistakenly believe that as long as they
keep up with the crossword puzzles or
keep going to their favorite social clubs that their brains are
adequately stimulated. But just like the body, unless the brain
receives stimulation to each of its different parts, function is
impaired. It is most evident with memory problems. As we age,
this can become even more pronounced. However, research has
established measurable improvements to brain function in
individuals who include a variety of brain exercises in their lives
just as they would exercise each body part at a gym.
Come learn what you can do to add zest to your day and put a
sparkle back in your eyes! A healthier brain can improve
alertness, attention to detail, and memory retention. Brain health
also improves natural interest and inquisitiveness about the world
around you. This class can benefit anyone who would like to stay
sharp but may also be of some help to those who have already
experienced mild impairment or may be recovering from illness
that has affected thinking. Research indicates that those with
irreversible dementias may actually slow the progress of the
disease with brain exercises and are welcome to attend along with
a loved one. Participants will enjoy the supportive atmosphere.
This new session will begin Monday, September 12th, from 10am
to 11:30am. We will meet each Monday for six weeks. To enroll,
just attend the first Monday. A donation will be taken for the use of
the Berkeley Senior Center. To learn more about Memory Minders
or our monthly Brain Fitness Club*, contact Shari Scolaro at 304-
754-4230.
* The monthly Brain Fitness Club is on holiday for July and August 2011 and will resume
in November following this Brain Fitness Course which will involve the meeting days in
September and October.

Most people tend to view their home as their private place where love and
comfort and safety abound. Caregiving for an assisted family member or
friend in that home can be very rewarding for those involved. But that is not
the case for many people who give or receive assistance.
Family relational issues are typically not discussed outside the home which can lead to stress and
abuse because available resources are not known or accessed.
This seminar will explore some of the factors which can lead to abuse, neglect and caregiver
burnout. Participants will be able to recognize signs of caregiver stress and care receiver abuse.
Attendees will also learn what resources are available to help caregiving families and how to
access help for themselves or others.

Nancy Cipoletti, WV Bureau of Senior Services - The Dementia Factor
