Miss Kelly

"A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank...but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child." ~ Forest Witcraft

The Childrens Institute, Pittsburgh, PA Special Education Teacher Students with Multiple Disabilities Students with Autism Ages 7-13 2008-Present Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA B.S. Degree- Fall 2003- Fall 2007 Certification: Elementary Education & Special Education

Classroom Procedures
The program for students with Autism at The Childrens Institute is based on the theories of Applied Behavior Analysis. My classroom is a Verbal Behavior classroom, which is an approach that is language based, targeting the language skills of students and utilizes specific teaching techniques and protocols. My goal is to provide each of my students with the tools they need to communicate their wants and needs, increase their functional independence, and teach socially appropriate behaviors. I use two different assessments in my classroom, the Verbal Behavior -Milestones Assessment and Placement Program and The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills. Both of the assessments are very comprehensive and are done twice each school year.

Mini-Philosophy of Education
I believe that each classroom contains a unique community of learners that varies not only in abilities, but also in learning styles. My role as an educator is to give my students the tools that they need to become successful members of society. I teach to the specific needs of each student so that they can continue to make meaningful progress. I also use a variety of teaching methods that encourage active student participation and engagement. Like students, I believe that teachers are continually growing and learning. There are always new teaching styles and new research about education for teachers to study. I believe that developing strong relationships with parents and families is a very important part of the educational process. I maintain daily communication between school and home.

Technology Experience
I use PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Publisher, Google Documents, and IEP Writer regularly in the classroom for lesson planning. Recently, I have learned to use Animoto to create slideshows, Glogster to create virtual posters, Storybird to create online books, and Rubistar to create rubrics. These are all tools that I will use in the classroom to enhance my instruction. My students use programs such as Earobics, PBSkids.org, google, and augmentative communication devices.
