The History Of Social Media

The story of social media began on 1971 when the first Email was sent. The computers where right each other. Then in 1978 something called Bulletin Board Systems was created and it was a program that exchanged data with other users. The first copies of this system where distributed by USENET an early online bulletin board. (Kindenal, 2011)

In 1994 theglobe.com gave users the liberty of publishing their own content about their online experiences and gave the opportunity to inter act with people with similar interests, but theglobe.com doesnt saw that another social network was coming and that it was better than it, and by 1997 it replaces theglobe.com. This new social network is called AOL Instant Messenger and it gives users the opportunity to talk with people all over the world by messages that were sending immediately.(kindenal, 2011)

Also in 1997 a page that allows profile creation and listing friends appear and it was called sixdegrees.com. This page become very popular but its fame only lasts 5 years because in 2002 Friendster replaces it. It gave users the opportunity to connect with real -world friends. In the first three months the user base grows to 3 million users. About 1 of every 126 internet users at a time.(ODell, 2011)

In 2003 Myspace is launched and is conceived as a Friendster clone. It was created by an internet marketing firm and the first version was hastily coded in 10 days. In the following years many other social networks were launched but it doesnt get as much fame as myspace do. But in 2004 an intercollegiate social network was created. It was launched at the Harvard college and more than the half of the students sign up in the first month. It becomes so pop ular that now it has more than 600 million active users.(ODell, 2011)

In 2006 Twitter is launched but facebook steels being the leader of all social media networks getting over myspace, twitter, and even Friendster. Is the page with the greater number of visitors all around the world.(Boris, 2011).
