ONE-DAY RETREAT TO PROMOTE POSITIVE BODY IMAGE IN BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND PATIENTS SAN DIEGOYoung Survival Coalition San Diego is hosting a one-day retreat entitled Making Peace With Your Body to equip breast cancer survivors and newly diagnosed patients of all ages with the positive coping skills needed to accept their post-treatment bodies on Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is taking place at La Jolla Cove Bridge Club and will be facilitated by three-time breast cancer survivor Pasha Hogan, psychotherapist and founder of Creative Recovery TM, a wellness program that empowers participants to transform lifes challenges into profound learning and healing experiences. People in attendance will be led on a holistic, spiritual quest to reconnect with body, mind and soul through guided mediation, storytelling, yoga and art. Accepting the changes that your body goes through during breast cancer treatment is critical to recovering, said Allison Briggs, retreat co-coordinator. We are excited to have Pasha lead attendees on a transformative journey and anticipate that everyone will leave feeling refreshed with a new, positive outlook on their body and life in general. Family and friends impacted by a loved ones breast cancer diagnosis are also invited to participate. Attendees are encouraged to R.S.V.P for the event. The cost is $40 in advance and $45 at the door; however, a limited number of partial scholarships covering 50 percent of the price are available. The service lets users create or join spontaneous sports games and provides incentives for usage, including titles such as King of the Court, and inclusion in a monthly Sportaneous Hall of Fame, and rewards (e.g. athletic apparel). A joint effort of three San Diego natives, Sportaneous provides users with a convenient way to stay physically active, and creates a network of players who prefer to participate in team sports rather than exercise alone. SAN DIEGOIs Mission Bay Gross? On Thursday, May 12 from 6 p.m. 8 p.m., San Diego Coastkeepers free quarterly Signs of the Tide public forum will clear the fog surrounding the urban jewel and popular getaway spots water quality and safety. The regions leading environmental nonprofit protecting inland and coastal waters will educate the public with the help of four expert panelists at Urban Corps San Diego, located at 3127 Jefferson Street. Panelists will examine different aspects of the bay and address attendees about Mission Bays ecosystem; land use and development history; infrastructure upgrades to improve urban impacts; and water quality data. Speakers and topics are as follows: Rob Hutsel, executive director of San Diego River Parks Foundation, will share Mission Bays history and how it transformed to one of the biggest recreational assets in San Diego. Hutsel will explore the change of the course of water flowing to the bay from the San Diego River, concluding on water circulation happening throughout the year in Mission Bay. Ken Schiff, deputy director of Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, will compare Mission Bays water quality status with similar water bodies in the region. A water quality expert, Schiff will explain various water quality testing methods and draw a connection between government water quality standards and human health. Ruth Kolb, program manager at City of San Diego Transportation and Stormwater Department, will discuss how Mission Bay got its bad reputation and how the City of San Diego has taken drastic steps to improve the Bays water quality. Jen Kovecses, staff scientist at San Diego Coastkeeper, will share her expertise about current problems Coastkeeper sees affecting Mission Bays water quality and explain Coastkeepers goals for improving the water quality. Kovecses will outline next steps and different ways community members can get involved in the process.

Attendees with appetite for knowledge will be offered light appetizers and beverages. Coastkeepers next Signs of the Tide on Thursday, Aug. 9, will examine San Diego Bays Dirty Little Secret. All of the Signs of the Tide events are free and open to the public. In addition to Signs of the Tide forums, Coastkeeper provides San Diego residents with a variety of opportunities to act as partners in preservation, including Water Quality Monitoring and beach cleanups.
