Ceramics
Ceramics classes are held workshop style, so if you have any ideas you have been thinking over, now would be the time to express them in clay. We will utilize our facility to the max, from the pottery wheel to hand-building to extruding, and even slab rolling to create reliefs. Fees cover the cost of your first bag of clay. It is important to attend the first class, where safety procedures and a material list will be discussed.

Learn how to make a large variety of ceramic tiles while exploring different colors, patterns, and shapes. The size can range from 4 Sq. to no more than 6 in any dimension. There is a durability of clay tiles that allow for mounting indoors or outdoors, with the proper sealant. Students are encouraged to bring their own old towel, ruler, pencil, and sketchbook. Please bring any commercial tiles (glazed or unglazed) for references to the first class.
Tile Workshop
This class happens in two parts: on Saturday September 24, we will meet at Studio One Art Center and make simple clay pots or masks. Students will then learn how to create a burnished effect on their vessels. On Saturday October 15th, students will meet at Studio One and then caravan to Dillon beach. We will fire ceramic pieces in a sand pit using a variety of dry seaweed for special effects. Every participant is expected to bring firewood. Family and friends are welcome on the day of firing. Please, bring food to share. Dogs are allowed on Dillon Beach.

This is a traditional fine arts class that incorporates drawing and sculpture. As a student, you may choose a trajectory of drawing, sculpture, or both! Cartoneria from paper is known as cartoneria (cardboard sculpture). Cartoneria is The ability to create sculptures
a popular art form from Mexico that combines a mixture of indigenous knowledge with Spaniard art techniques and is deeply rooted in ancient Mexicos legends, aditions and artisanship. In this course, we will create fantastic mythological creatures from paper. We will incorporate diverse elements from creatures such as demons, angels or dragons to create new and unique forms.

This class is Inspired by the centuries old tradition of Oaxaca animal carvings. You will learn use hand woodcarving tools such as chisels and knifes to create fantastic animals, wonderful, intricate and expressive by nature. This class is for the enthusiastic beginner or the seasoned experienced woodcarver. We will cover the history and cultural background of Oaxaca wood carvings, alebrijes and other Mexican traditional arts, safety rules in the woodshop, how to read the wood, basic shapes in sculpture, sealing of the art piece, decorating and finishing, from the mere conception of the idea to the exhibition of the artwork.

of Montana, his Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Sculpture from Brandeis University, and his MFA in Ceramic Sculpture from The Rochester Institute of Technology. He currently instructs Clay Sculpture for Walnut Creek Civic Arts Education, Art Appreciation for Nicolet College, and is an instructor of Clay Hand-building for the City College of San Francisco.
Learn the art of working with warm glass. Using compatible glass you will create expressive work using stringers, confetti, decals, powders and copper inclusions. Beginning and advanced students welcome. More advanced projects will be offered to continuing students. Students need to buy fusible glass, a glass cutter and eye protection to class. All tools are provided.

This class is an introduction to the wonderful world of kiln-formed glass. Layers of compatible glass are fused together to create artistic objects including jewelry, tiles, and picture frames. Glass can also be slumped into or over molds to create barrettes, small plates, and votive candleholders. Glass cutting, compatibility testing, use of frits (crushed glass) and metal inclusions are among the techniques presented and Information on the use of kilns and firing processes is also offered. More advanced projects will be available to continuing students. A supply list will be given out at the first class meeting.

Learn how to fuse glass into bowls and jewelry from recycled glass. Work with tempered glass (bus stop glass) and make bowls or small cast pieces. Experiment with compatible powders, frits, confetti and metal inclusions and decals to express yourself artistically. Exercise the right side of your brain and learn how to design, cut and fuse glass-the warm glass experience. Working with recycled window glass and tempered glass, powders, frits, and metal inclusions you will learn various techniques to fuse glass. Make small clay molds for casting. Beginners welcome. Capture the beauty of light passing through colored glass by creating a stained glass panel. A brief review of the history of stained glass is presented to show the vast possibilities of the use of glass art. This class will include both the traditional leaded technique as well as the Tiffany method of copper foil. Instruction is offered in glass cutting, leading, foiling, soldering, puttying and use of patina; students will be able to complete a panel of approximately one square foot in size. A supply list will be given out at the first class meeting.

Participants who dont need instructions are welcome to work on their individual projects. A lab monitor is present for set-up/break-down and to ensure lab safety. You must have taken Stained Glass class for 3 sessions. New participants who have extensive knowledge of the safety and prep procedure can meet with the glass coordinator to waive the requirements. Once in the lab, it is important to follow any directions stated, posted, and respect other students artwork. There is no storage space. You must provide your own glass. There are Studio One stock tools.

This class emphasizes building basic/intermediate knowledge of jewelry design and construction. Beginning students will design their own jewelry and construct their design pieces using the fundamental techniques of soldering, sawing, filing, finishing, and basic bezel setting. Lectures, demonstrations, and handouts will provide the basis of any technique needed. Intermediate students will progress through more advanced techniques (forging, cold connections, etching, etc). Jewelry will be made from metal sheet and wire. Brass, copper, and tools are provided. New students need to attend the first class for a safety discussion and a materials list.

This workshop offers an opportunity for you to bring your personal memorabilia, found objects, bits and pieces of anything and everything from the past and present. Choose to work in 2 dimensional collage and /or 3 dimensional assemblage / box constructions. Your personal stash of things that you have or will begin to collect for this workshop, will be the source from from which you will create your imagery...so START COLLECTING! (Note) 2 sizes of readymade boxes are available to choose from for a minimal cost. 2 dimensional Collages will have no size limitations, however you should bring all materials such as boards and glue for mounting. 3 dimensional assemblage / box constructions will entail transforming a natural wooden box into a unique work of art, so all paint cardboard, glue, glass and frame will be supplied by you and it will all be explained by the instructor in a detailed pre-workshop email. has been knitting and crocheting all her life, and simply loves to do crafts. Her expertise includes embroidery, crochet, knitting, paper folding, basket weaving, henna art, and culinary arts. She was born in India and has been in the United States for 20 years. She loves to teach arts and crafts to all ages and has been teaching art for 8 years. Her teaching experience also includes teaching Hindi at UC Berkley and art and crafts and St. Pauls Episcopal school and Civicorps Charter School.
Knitting
Knitting is an excellent therapeutic way to meditate and release stress in a productive manner. Knitting needs not be thought of as an intimidating tangle of needles of yarn, but instead as an easy and productive way to develop motor function and brain activity. It is an excellent pastime for people of all ages. Come learn beginning and advanced knitting techniques where we will learn how to knit cute beanies, fashionable scarves, and even pillows for more advanced students. This crochet class will cover basic crochet techniques such as single and double crochet stitches, making foundation chains, and we will work on scarves together as a class. Crochet is an excellent way to unwind and relax after a long day and at the same time make something productive. At any age, it helps keep the brain active and plastic. Darkroom Printing Techniques
When your traditional black & white photographs dont give you the impact you would like, consider taking a darkroom printing intensive. This is a one to one darkroom printing intensive with an instructor who has many years of darkroom printing experience. Learn various techniques in the photo printing process: dodging and burning; masking, darkroom chemistry, toning, using correct printing filters, lens & filter choices and selecting the correct photo paper for your print. This is a 3 hour intensive. Select a time and day that will work for you and the instructor to meet. Student provides their own photo paper. Prior darkroom printing experience required .
Volunteers assist as monitors to set-up the chemistry, observe and break down the Darkroom. Our facilities are available to the community for black and white film developing and printing no larger than 11 x 14. Prior to registration, and lab use, new participants must have a brief over the phone or e-mail interview with the photo coordinator. At the time of your initial arrival, the monitor will give you an orientation that will include Studio Ones safety procedures and participant protocol. Bring your own photo paper and film. No production or commercial work is allowed. Lab time is purchased in 20-hour blocks of time. Patrons use time within 6 months. $90 for 20 hours for Oakland residents.

This class will provide the student the opportunity to refresh their skills in the darkroom. This will be a one to one instruction in the various printing techniques necessary to produce a high quality black and white photographic print. Whether youve been out of the darkroom for 20 years or less, youll still know some of the basics. Learn about the various darkroom chemicals that are used; the various papers and films that are available and how to control the enlarger during the developing/ printing process. This class will refresh your memory and get you to a proficient level of printing where you can rent darkroom space at Studio One and print on your own. Having trouble getting your digital camera to give you the results you want? Learn all the features and controls of your digital camera. Well discuss making better creative decisions, how to control lighting, movement and flash. Basic image editing software will be discussed. Bring your camera manual and questions to class for individual help. Youll learn to create a web presence including printing online, a blog, and a web gallery using free tools available on the Internet. The blog and gallery you create are yours to keep and use. Youll also learn to add images to both and how to maintain your site. If you have a laptop or if you prefer to learn on your own laptop please bring to class. Our new lab is a Macintosh Lab.

Francisco Bay Area, working as a visual artist and teacher at California College of the Arts and Studio One Art Center. In addition to visual arts, Mokhtar holds an MA in English Creative Writing and has studied architecture, graphic design and litography internationally in Tehran, Oxford and Oslo. His novel, Shamayel-e-Mana, has been published in Sweden and Iran and several of his short stories and articles have appeared in Iranian anthologies. Mokhtars work has been exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad, most recently at SOMArts and Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco.
This class is good for you if you want to explore your abilities in line drawings or if you want to expand your skills. You need few tools, and a few hours instruction which would encourage you to keep working and enjoying this fundamental element of visual art. It is an excellent way to introduce basic shapes to young children and developing fine motor skills. It is easy to learn yet fun to do, and there are infinite possibilities to be made with folded paper. Laura Nagle is a native Oakland artist. She attended UC Santa Cruz where she earned degrees in both community
studies with a focus on youth, and the visual arts with an emphasis on painting and drawing. She has completed over 10 public murals around the Bay Area, several of which involved working with youth in an arts based non-profit. She has taught middle school and high school drawing and painting classes in after school programs. She is currently in the process of getting her teaching credential at Cal State East Bay. Her passion is teaching youth to grow as artist, and to use their art as a medium for self expression and building community.
In this class, students will develop their painting skills and work together to create mural(s) on large wood panels. Students will gain technical drawing and painting skills and learn about the history of mural art in the first few sessions. In the last few sessions, students will work together to develop the mural theme(s), create a design, and paint their mural collaboratively.

Primarily an airbrush portrait artist he has several years experience in airbrushing, including shoes & clothing, automotive & motorcycles, canvas art, murals and body painting. Drake has been featured in many art shows and venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. His work has been on numerous television shows, music videos, and local and nationwide publications.

Jiajun Lu was born in Shanghai, China, he graduated from Musashino Art University in Japan; in 1998, Jiajun received a special offer as an artist of Alien of Extraordinary Ability from INS the United States and became an American artist. Jiajuns artworks have been selected in several national and international exhibitions, and some of his works were in the art collections in several museums and public location in China, Japan, as well as the United States. During the Off the Rim exhibition at The Grounds for Sculptures in NJ. the New York Times (July 4, 2004) stated that: Jiajun Lus Individual and Entire, the shapes are various and subtle, creating enticing forms...although each piece is as satisfying as last. Gerald has taught for the Oaklands Fine Art Summer School for 10years or more including three years as Assistant to the Director of the Ofass program. He has had a passion for Drama and Theatre since the age of eleven. Though retired he has not learned to quit.

Children who enjoy putting their hands in the garden soil will enjoy the feel of clay. Your childs hand eye coordination will be enhanced by this class. The wheel is a meditative experience that calms and soothes anxious participants. You will gain knowledge about the entire process from structuring goopy clay to glazing finished pieces. The Attic Childrens Theatre announces their Winter Production THREE TALES FROM AFRICA, a trio of stories from the oral tradition of West Africa: Kigbo and the Bush Spitits, Mouse and Lion (an Ananse story), and Why Mosquito Buzzes In Peoples Ears. Three days, weekly, after school. All participants will not be needed at every rehearsal, but MUST attend the final rehearsals and performances at the Ebell Room of the Lakeside Park Garden Center.
Haunted House
Dont Be Scared! But if you are up to it, you can make others scream with joy and terror. Join the Studio One Haunted House Workshop and Learn How: Make-up, Costumes, Special effects, Booby Traps, (and an actual HAUNTED HOUSE TOUR on Halloween weekend) Two days, weekly, after school. All participants MUST be available on Saturday, October 29 from 4pm to 8pm to set-up, assist, or perform during the Haunted House Party.
