Postgraduate Diploma in Management

The PDM is only available to part time students. It mirrors the first 9 subjects of the MBA program and thus provides a solid grounding in the key disciplines, concepts and activities of management. It is a good solution for students who seek a management qualification in a shorter study period. The course can be completed in 16 months part time. The PDM also provides an entry point to other programs for people without either an undergraduate degree or a GMAT score. For many students, the PDM is one of several steps taken during an on-going process of upgrading professional skills. For example, PDM graduates often progress to study an MBA. To be eligible for this transfer, students must maintain a consistently high level of academic achievement.

In the classroom

There is No Typical Student

There is no typical student at MBS and no standard career path for our graduates. Selection into the program supports academic, industry, and cultural diversity. Students come from different countries around the globe. They bring diverse backgrounds, work histories, industry knowledge and life experiences with them into the classroom. This creates an exceptional student experience and a dynamic learning environment. MBS encourages productive collaboration and shared ideas. Students learn immensely from peer interaction. However, students do have some common attributesthe motivation to succeed, the ability to provide meaningful contributions in the classroom and the desire to become global business leaders.

The diversity of the student body studying at MBS ensures an amazing multicultural learning experience. My full time intake was 60 people and we came from 31 different countries. Sophie Barlow

Integrated Learning

Our teaching approach incorporates syndicate learning, case studies, regular assessments and immersion in real-life industry projects, designed to help deepen student knowledge in a particular area of interest and to expose them to the real business world. Syndicate learning provides cross-fertilisation of ideas. By working in groups on projects and assignments, students can draw on the varied skills and experiences of each individual in the group. Case studies provide real-life exposure. The case study method of management learning is central to the MBS experience. Case studies refine analytical skills and strengthen the ability to make difficult decisions the hallmarks of skilful leadership.

MBS has access to case studies from private, public and not-forprofit sector organisations locally and internationally which have been developed at MBS and sourced from other business schools around the world. MBS is the exclusive Australian distributor of Harvard Business School case studies. Industry integration enables students to benefit in the classroom from MBSs strong ties to the corporate world. Specialists and senior executives talk about their experiences; they work with students on projects, and provide feedback on the work that students do. Students can also gain exposure to the real corporate world through industry projects and internship placements that require them to work directly with organisations on real issues affecting the company. Assessment for each subject varies but generally includes a combination of individual and group assignments, in-class tests, class participation and formal examinations.

Your Teachers

The quality of teaching at MBS is outstanding. MBS academics are chosen for their reputation as scholars and researchers, their international expertise in education and business, and for their skills as teachers. They are driven by a passion to share their insights and create dynamic learning environments. MBS academics are highly sought after opinion leaders and engage daily with the wider national and international business community. They conduct research, consult with high-profile commercial organisations, non-profit companies and government agencies, sit on boards and advisory committees, and comment in the media. This ensures that MBS academics bring best-practice, relevant business knowledge into their classrooms.

Australia: A study in diversity

Living and studying in Australia

Australias melting pot of cultures, high standard of living, and strong economy attracts immigrants and visitors from every continent. Australia is very safe with a low crime rate, political stability and a peaceful and friendly society. Australia has a strong, growing economy with a per capita GDP that exceeds most other developed countries, and its geographic proximity and professional ties with the Asia Pacific make it an ideal location for managers in any industry. Australias economy is dominated by its services sector, with agricultural and mining accounting for about half of the nations exports.

Australias cost of living varies according to style of accommodation and lifestyle choices. It is estimated that students will need about $16-$26,000AUD (in addition to tuition fees) per year to cover living expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, textbooks and entertainment. Australias visa system is one of the most progressive and enabling of any world-wide. Application and processing times vary from a few days to a few months and are dependent on a number of factors including country of origin. The system is considered very supportive of international student study. International students must study full time but can work part time up to 20 hours per week (unlimited during breaks). On completion, graduates can either apply for permanent residency or a skilled work visa, which is valid for 18 months. Spouses can accompany students and are permitted to work during their partners study. Dependant children of school age have access to the government school system. An investment in yourself is a true investment in your future.

Investing in your future

Tuition fees

MBS programs represent a major investment in your future. Tuition fees are paid per subject, per term, in advance, and students are notified of payment deadlines at the beginning of each calendar year. The per subject cost for MBS subjects is $2,950AUD for full time study and $3,300AUD for part time study.* Refer to the At a glance table on pages 10-11 for indicative total program costs. These fees are applicable to 2010. They are subject to annual review and may be adjusted to take into account cost increases. The school guarantees that the fee will not increase by more than 10% from year-to-year. Students also need to budget for textbooks, case packs and other study-related expenses, such as printing. An allowance of $150 per subject is reasonable. International students are required to pay a non-refundable Acceptance Fee of $2,000. All fees are quoted in Australian dollars.
