STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

THESIS: TRANSIT HUB

Mobility and movement are the lifelines of any city. This transit becomes more critical and important in a metro city. The efficient and adequate functioning of the transits and transit oriented facilities are very important for the smooth functioning of the city s urban scape. Transportation is the most important, most affected and least bothered sector in the vicious cycle of increasing population and growing development of various industries. Today, all industrial growth is taking place peripheral to the core cities. Due to this, commuting long distances becomes a major obstruction, for the working class of the society. Long distance commuters cannot afford private transportation, but due to the lack of a good public transit system, people are bound to use private transportation system. This is neither economical nor environmental friendly. It increases the air as well as noise pollution and traffic, which again consumes a lot of energy, fuel and time.

My inclination towards this project is to develop a transit facility which is highly user-friendly, economical and environmental friendly. The area of interest is in proposing a transit junction is to learn the critical functioning of the junction where different transportation modes come together. The nature of this critical junction is: y y y Highly dynamic Highly functional zone Highly dense

The focus is in learning the functional combination of the three and developing it in such a way that it becomes a central transit point. Intermodal public transportation hubs are a rapidly evolving and developing concept, designed to provide a hub for interacting and intercommuting a variety of intercity, regional and local public transport systems, all within a single facility.

The thesis seeks to introduce a new mass transit system that will help in formalization of the existing transportation system in the city.

A transportation hub, which can be developed as a unique junction, a landmark, a node, where all kinds of transportation modes are layered up. The transportation complex can act as an intermediate junction as well as can become a destination itself.

The objective of the study is to develop a functional integrated transit facility which can be used by the common man in reducing his day to day commuting hassles. Another significant aspect is the benefit of the service providers. These public transportation providers can benefit from the efficiencies of the shared costs and operational and functional infrastructure. Public transportation services will also be benefitted by the smoother intermodal interfaces and travel route network opportunities that tend to promote higher ridership. Transit hubs can revitalize the district and contribute in the growth of community and surrounding regions, aesthetically and economically. WHAT CAN READER EXPECT FROM THE STUDY? This transportation complex would bring together and integrates people, jobs and services and would be designed in a way that will make it efficient, safe and convenient to travel on foot or by any other transit mode. This intermodal transit facility will act as a hub for more than just transportation.
