ACM & IET prEsEnT Workshop on C/C++

Programming is much more than just learning the syntax of a language, in much the same way as composing a piece of music requires much more than just mastering the chords one can play on a musical instrument. Notwithstanding the fact that software engineering now provides us with various approaches for creating good code, fundamentally it is still the case that as you create each new entity (variables, data structures, classes, etc.) in a program, at the back of your head you constantly think about how it will interact with the entities you created previously and the entities yet to come. That is, as you lay down each construct in a program, you cant help but worry about how it will harmonize with the rest of the constructs, those already in place, and those yet to be thought of. - Prof. Avinash Kak, Purdue University, pioneering researcher in computer vision and computer languages. Programming has become a ubiquitous tool in the repertoire of any engineer today. C and C++ are by large the most popular programming languages ever created. Whether it is for placements, for projects or academic work, being comfortable with coding is a valuable asset. The objective will be twofold: 1. To introduce students with basic knowledge of the languages to more advanced concepts. 2. To help students with absolutely zero or limited knowledge of programming languages get comfortable with coding in C/C++. Participants who successfully complete the workshop shall learn to appreciate the beauty of code and how to use C/C++ as a language to express solutions to problems that test your analytical and logic abilities. Two parallel workshops shall be conducted - students will be put into the advanced or beginner group based on their performance in a short written test. Students from all semesters and departments are encouraged to participate in the workshop. The workshop will be conducted by some of the best coders on campus. Many of them have successfully completed internships and are placed at companies like Microsoft and Goldman Sachs. Some have represented the university at international level coding competitions like the ICPC. Since, all of them have a pragmatic approach to programming; rest assured that the workshop will be a real learning experience, a far cry from the abstract and mundane approach taken inside normal classrooms.
