UPLB TO DISSOLVE VARSITY PROGRAM

Varsity teams in UPLB face an uncertain fate as a letter sent by Chancellor Velasco to Professor Merites Buot, Head of Department of Human Kinetics (DHK), containing the memo to abolish the varsity program as these teams do not participate in inter-collegiate competitions outside the university. The students have not taken this passively and responded by holding a protest action last August 12. Together, the varsity teams, University Student Council (USC), and SAKBAYAN who trooped to the Administration Building have been successful in demanding a dialogue with the chancellor. Unclear Proposition The clamor on the issue heightened on August 10, when the Office of the Chancellor issued a clarification. It stands on the premise that the varsity teams limit the student participation in sports because the sports facilities are reserved for their use that student sponsored sports competition are forced to execute their venue outside the university. There is also an athletic fee, more than 50% of which goes to the varsity program. Velasco argues that this fee should be utilized for the whole studentry and not only for the varsities. The athletes, during the August 11 CSL meeting countered, the claims of the administration that the varsity prevents students from using the sports facilities and in fact lends it to other students provided they have asked for its use. Organizers of student sponsored sports competitions supported the claim and even explained that they hold their activities outside because the rates inside the university are high. The students also asks whether the athletic fee is going in the right places because in experience, the varsity teams even shell out money when competing because the budget released is less than the expenses they incurr. The coaches also receive only 1,500 pesos coaching fee. New Scheme The administration says that student varsities can be converted into sports group screened by a committee for those who wants to represent the university if their competency is at competitive level. This new scheme is to tap fund of the Arts and Culture Program if it is to be approved by the UP President. Yet, the screening process automatically quip the possibility that not all groups might be afforded

a chance to be picked as a group that will represent UPLB. Fateful Day The same day the protest action was done is the last day for nominations for the next UPLB Chancellor. Allen Lemence, USC Councilor and student representative to the search committee have called on the students to be observant and vigilant on the nominee who would champion the student's rights and would promise to accept and uphold the UPLB Student Agenda and List of General Demands. The students themselves are also expectant of a hope that the next chancellor would be prostudent and pro-people so that issues like the varsity issue and other commercialization and privatization schemes that existed in the last 6 years would never happen again. And that he/she would join the UP community in asserting for sufficient state subsidy for education and other social services. [D]
