SECTION A; 1. 0 INTRODUCTION In Bukombe about people are depending on agriculture economy which account for about of Gross Domestic Production (GDP)and provides employment of at least % of the population. Other economic activity carries out in this district include livestock, agro processing, Lumbering and bee keeping. At Bukombe honey is produced at Iponya Ushirombo and Runzewe and Msonga village. Beekeeping plays a major role in socioeconomic development and environmental conservation. It is a source of food, raw materials for various industries, medicine and source of income for beekeepers. It is estimated that the sector generates about Tshs each year from sales of honey and beeswax and employ about .rural people. It is an important income generating activity with high potential for improving incomes, especially for communities living close to forests and woodlands. Beekeeping also plays a major role in improving biodiversity and increasing crop production through pollination. In most cases traditional methods are used in beekeeping and this account for of the total production of honey and beeswax in the Bukombe. all hives are traditional including log and bark hives, others are reeds, gourds, pots etc The Government of Tanzania accorded high priority to beekeeping, honey production and byproducts as one of the sectors that can contribute to the national income and poverty reduction efforts. The establishment of National Beekeeping Policy of 1998 with overall goal of enhancing the contribution of the beekeeping sector to the sustainable development and conservation and management of its natural resources for the benefit of

present and future generations. The policy encourages active participation of all stakeholders in establishment and sustainable management of bee reserves and apiaries, promoting beekeeping-based industries and products and promoting sustainable management of beekeeping in cross sect oral areas for ecosystem conservation and management. Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO) in partnership with International Labour Organization (ILO) responds to the call of the policy by introducing women and youth employment beekeepers organization and modern beekeeping technique project in 10 Districts of Tanzania mainland including Bukombe. 1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Problem to be researched in this study is why there is unreliable market of honey product for beekeepers at Bukombe

1.2 HYPOTHESIS 1. Unreliable production capacity resulting unreliable market 2. Low quality of the product cause unreliable market 3. Lack of marketing strategies implementation

2.0 R ESEARCH OBJECTIVES The objectives of this survey are:

To determine annual production capacity for honey in the district What frequency of production activity done at what capacity To assess honey production processing and how it is done To assess the packaging, labeling and pricing the product in the market and how to incorporate retain existing and potential market.

To examine storage place and equipments before and after processing .To determine how people knowing their products To determine the promotional platform that used to advertise the product

2.2 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Identify reasons for unreliable production capacity Determine production process used by beekeepers at Bukombe Identify equipments used in processing honey at Bukombe Determine marketing strategy adopted by honey processors at Bukombe Identify existing and potential market for honey product

2.3 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

-Lack of enough money and time to collect data -Lack of enough secondary data -Illiteracy of respondents

2.4 LITERATURE REVIEW Bukombe is among district in Shinyanga involving in bekeeping and hence have high production of two bees products that is honey and bees wax this is due to forestry and plants around the district which are favorable for bees population. Is about .. hectres occupied by Kigosi forest and forest which are sorounding Bukombe. The presence of miombo trees (Brachystegia, Julbernardia,

Isoberlina, Combretum, Terminalia spp) also contributes significantly to the high production potential of bee products at Bukombe Honey produced at Bukombe is organic honey so it received high demand in all TANZANIA and other countries a especially neighbouring countries like Burundi,Rwanda,DRC Congo,Kenya and Uganda . Due to an increasing concern from consumers for no or little chemicals in food products, it is expected that the demand for organically produced honey will be even more in the future. Based on statistics of .., the annual capacity of Bukombe for honey and beeswax production are for honey and for beewax In Bukombe beekeeping is mainly rural based practiced by local beekeepers in living in the villages. Poor market for honey and beeswax external and internal market might be as a result of low production that is available for local bee farmers. Lack of existing and potential reliable market for honey and beeswax has been the main obstacle for farmers to rely on beekeeping in order to increase household income and food security, efforts that can contribute positively toward poverty reduction. From the fact that unreliable market is the main cause of reduced production of bee products and their profitability, and that little is known on market of bee products in Bukombe; this study was initiated to asses production situation of honey product which is the mostly bee product at Bukombe. Results from this study will contribute towards designing rational and sustainable measures to create reliable market of bee products at Bukombe. Such measures will enable the beekeeping industry to contribute significantly towards poverty alleviation through increased household income, district and national development in general.

3.0: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.0 METHODOLOGY Methodology used to conduct this research is qualitative methods were interviews and questionnaires will be implemented. A total of two focus group discussion will be conducted, four in depth interview and two questionnaire will used in collecting data. 3.1 AREA OF STUDY Study will be conducted at Bukombe district mainly in three villages thats Iponya, Ushirombo and Msonga 3.2 SAMPLE SIZE Sample size of one group of 8-10 people will be included in focus group. Participants in group consist female and male. Apart from that two in depth interview will be conducted in each village.

3.3 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Sampling techniques used is random sampling selected from beekeepers at Bukombe 3.4 TYPE AND SOURCE OF DATA Source of Data Primary data mainly relying from Beekeepers, Local Government (Afisa Nyuki and other stakeholders like TASSAF personnel as well as secondary data which are mainly relied from Statistical data to supplement the primary data collected. 3.5 DATA COLLECTION METHODS Different qualitative data collection will be used that is primary and secondary data collection methods specifically in depth interview, focus group discussion, life histories, questionnaires, and review of secondary information to develop primary data collection

-Focus group discussion interviews will be conducted with beekeepers and honey processors aim to acquire information about production capacity, availability of machinery, equipments, and Marketing strategies used to promote their product. -One session of group discussion will be conducted in two villages Iponya and Msonga and participants will be selected from beekeepers and honey processors randomly. Each group will compose female and male with working age so that discussion will have high participation. Selection of 8-10 participants in each focus group discussion will be done by village leaders and honey processor group leader and then random sampling done to both leaders and SIDO employee in order to avoid biases. Discussion will be conducted in Kiswahili where by facilitators will moderate discussion by raise topic and let participants contribute what they know concerning the topic raised. Apart from focus group discussion a total of four in depth interview s will be conducted base on stratified sampling where by one group leader will be interviewed means that at least two group in each village so as to have their opinion on production capacity, processing techniques and marketing of honey product. Similarly questionnaire will be used as a tool for collection data where by information was collected from other honey stakeholders such as TASSAF personnel and Afisa Nyuki at Bukmbe Local Goverment. 4 SCHEDUAL OF ACTIVITIES
