1. INTRODUCTION
India is one of the fastest growing countries in the world. By 2008, India had established itself as the world's second-fastest growing major economy. Today in 2011, it is time for infrastructure in India to grow on par with that in the developed world. More high-rise buildings are expected to be built in urban India to accommodate its growing urban population. India Tower, a 720 m (2,360 feet) tall skyscraper under construction in Mumbai, when completed is expected to be second tallest skyscraper in the world. A competition is already underway among major cities of India to build the best skylines in their cities. As a part of this, Bangalore, the IT hub of India wants to develop its skyline to be the best in the country. It identified the skyline site close to the central business district of Bangalore for high-rise building development which is targeted to become a world class skyline. You are a structural engineer in SIT Corporation and your boss announced a competition that each structural engineer can propose an out-of the-world design for its first building on its new skyline site. The winner of the competition will automatically become the Chief Structural Engineer of the project. So, it is the time for you to gear up and climb your career ladder. Design the best high-rise building for the prestigious Bangalore skyline site project.

2. BUILDING LOCATION AND SITE DESCRIPTION

2.1. Location of Site 2.2. Plot size 2.3. Maximum storey height : : : Bangalore, India 3600 sq. meter 3.5 meters

2.4. The site is flat with no major undulations. 2.5. The adjacent plots are vacant. 2.6. The building should have at least 20 stories. The building should have a mixed use with office space, residential, commercial and others. You are free to choose the material and structural system. All the necessary facilities in the building like staircases, elevators etc. should be integrated with your design, and should conform to the National building code of India. According to the revised Master Plan 2015 released by the Bangalore Development Authority, some of development control rules for multi-storied buildings are summarised in Table1.

2.7. The soil at the site was investigated with the help of 8 bore holes dug at the site. Following distinct soil strata were found at the site: Str1: Top soil, Dark brown silty clay sand with brick bats Str2: Dark brown sandy silty clay Str3: Black silty clay Str4: Dark brown silty sand Str5: Brownish grey silty fine sand Str6: Greyish brown silty medium sand Str7: Brown silty fine sand Str8: Brown silty medium sand Str9: Brownish grey cemented sand (clayey silty sand) Str10: Dark brownish grey comprising of silt, sand with rock pieces Str11: Brownish grey weathered rock Str12: Brownish grey/ grey partly weathered rock with irregular small rock core pieces. 2.8. Standard Penetration Test is conducted at different depths in the 8 bore holes dug at the site. The Standard Penetration Test Values obtained at various depths in the bore holes are tabulated in Table 2. 2.9. Depth below the ground level in metres at which different strata end in different bore holes is tabulated in Table 3. 2.10. Use National Building Code and relevant IS codes for design.

3. RULES AND EVENT FORMAT

3.1. A team may consist of maximum of four members. 3.2. Members in a team can be from different colleges. 3.3. You may use any software for any part of the problem statement, which should be mentioned in the report or presentation.

3.4. In case of any discrepancy, the jurys decision will be final. 3.5. Round 1 In this round the deliverable is the Design Basis Report (DBR). This should include at least the following issues The structural system chosen Type of foundation chosen and its justification Material used (steel/concrete/composite/glass) and their specification Assumptions made for designing and justifications Load calculation and the method of analysis. No detailed calculations required for this round 3.5.6. Salient features of your design. Let sky be the limit for your creativity. You might be lucky to get some bonus points. 3.5.1. 3.5.2. 3.5.3. 3.5.4. 3.5.5.

3.6. Round 2 The reports to be submitted are: 3.6.1. Structural analysis of the building 3.6.2. Detailed architectural design of the building: elevation, sectional view, 3D image (using any software, e.g. Revit Architecture, will have bonus point) 3.6.3. Plans of minimum three floors, each of them serving different purposes like residential, commercial and office space. 3.6.4. Design for parking space. Construction methodology report 3.6.5. Step by step construction procedure of the building 3.6.6. Construction time table 3.6.7. Estimation of material, labour and bill of quantities 3.6.8. Technologies used All files should be submitted in pdf format.

3.7. Round 3 Participants are required to give presentation to the judges; 15 minutes time for each or the team to explain the key points and salient features of their design and 5 minutes for questions from the judges.
