Tellabs 8660 Edge Switch

The Tellabs 8660 Edge Switch is a fully managed IP/MPLS based router with versatile multiprotocol support. It is designed for cost efcient delivery of connectivity and services with Quality of Service (QoS) awareness in mobile and xed environments.
Overview
The Tellabs 8600 Managed Edge System provides a complete network solution composed of the Tellabs 8660 Edge Switch, the Tellabs 8630 Access Switch, the Tellabs 8620 Access Switch, the Tellabs 8606 Ethernet Aggregator, Tellabs 8605 Access Switch and an advanced network management system for managing the entire network and all of its connections and services. The Tellabs 8660 switch is the most scalable element of the Tellabs 8600 system solution designed for the carrier-class environment, having full element- and network-level redundancy functionality. It delivers real-time voice and video, QoS-aware data and Best Effort services offered through a wireless or wireline infrastructure.

Features and benefits

The Tellabs 8660 switch has a hardware-based forwarding architecture that enables high and predictable performance despite complex service requirements. The maximum bidirectional switching capacity of a fully equipped element is 42 Gbps. The architecture is based on a distributed switching design and a fully passive backplane. This provides a costefficient architecture with a low entry cost even for small configurations. The element can be equipped with a maximum of two CDC cards and 12 Interface Module Concentrators (IFCs) that contain two interface modules (IFMs). The wide selection of interface modules can be used with a mixture of protocols e.g., IP, MPLS, Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay and TDM. Integrated Control and DC power Card (CDC) implements management, routing, signalling, timing and powering for the network element. The Tellabs 8660 switch implements the latest QoS aware bandwidth control, queuing, policing and shaping techniques, where wire-speed operation is maintained even with all of the premium QoS features (ACL, classification, policing, marking, shaping) turned on with multiple lookups. The element supports low latency real-time services as well as data services with tunable performance characteristics. Both ATM- and DiffServ-based traffic management models are supported. In addition to scalable and predictable performance, the Tellabs 8660 switch contains the latest MPLS Traffic Engineering (TE) features, including DiffServ aware MPLS TE. This provides control of network resources for services with very strict delay, jitter and packet loss requirements. Service performance for a connection can be tested easily since each line card has an in-built hardware-based test generator. The Tellabs 8660 switch has an extensive set of element- and system-level protection mechanisms. At the hardware level, the element supports a versatile set of carrier-class functions, such as power and control card redundancy, distributed switching architecture and stored configuration backups for all line cards. Both 1+1 MSP/APS and 1+1 LSP mechanisms provide fast connection protection for selected network links or customer connections. In addition, all cards are hot-swappable and configurations are automatically restored from the control card after a line card replacement.

Applications
The main applications of the Tellabs 8660 switch are managed traffic aggregation in 2G and 3G mobile networks and native delivery of Ethernet and IP VPN services. The position of the element is typically close to an RNC/BSC site or wherever the interface and capacity needs justify using it. With the same system, a service provider can also implement complete network evolution in UMTS from R99 to R6 without any forklift upgrades (transition from ATM connectivity to IP routing). Even GSM traffic can be groomed and transported using the same element. In a similar way, the element can be used in CDMA and CDMA2000 environments. Implementation of the whole mix of MPLS pseudowire technologies enables delivery and management of connections based on Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay and TDM on the same platform, and transformation to IP whenever feasible. In converged networks, the Tellabs 8660 switch can natively produce business-critical Ethernet and IP VPN services as well as broadband service aggregation through DSLAMs or to Multi Tenant Units (MTUs). The Tellabs 8660 switch is designed to be economical and scalable for large, countrywide network deployments. The design of the element and related management system allows networks to scale from a few customers to large national bases with hundreds of thousands of customers and connections.

Network management
As part of the Tellabs 8600 system, the Tellabs 8660 switch is fully end-to-end managed with the Tellabs 8000 Network Manager. All interface, service and connection level parameters are configured remotely via the Tellabs 8000 managers GUI based tools. This is the primary and easiest way to configure the unit and the network.
