2008 SCIENCE

CONFERENCE

A Conference for
Science teachers
across the ESF to
share good
practice, discuss
developments in
science education
and to have a
drink together
2008 Science Conference
Welcome to Island School.
Some Useful Information.
Introduction and Key note speech: This will take place in the lower drama
studio, near the swimming pool and sports hall. See map.

Location of the Science Department: The Science department is located

in Block 1. See map.

Food: Tea, coffee, snacks and lunch will all be provided in the staff room. This
is located in Block 5 on level 2. This can be found up the stairs near the school
entrance and is directly above the school office and reception.

Laptops: If you bring your own laptop in will need to be configured for use on
our networks and wireless. This is not a long process but it depends on the
number of laptops. We have an ICT team who would be willing to do this. If
you could bring your laptop to room 141 when you arrive or between 8am-
8.30am, then we will have them available again after the
introduction/lecture.

We have 2 visiting lecturers from Hong Kong University coming to offer us a

chance to update our understanding and knowledge of scientific research
which is taking place in Hong Kong currently for use in our classrooms. I am
very thankful to them both for offering some of their time to us.

Here’s How I do it
• Here’s how we do it presentations/examples
• Sharing good practice, resources and ideas from colleagues at different
schools.
• Developing new resources for sharing in the future.

The sessions are being led by ESF colleagues and they have our thanks for
supporting this day. However the stars of each session will be all the participants.
Please bring to each session something to share of your experiences and be
prepared to produce new resources. Bring a USB to share the resources produces.

You need to select 2 options for the day in conjunction with your colleagues so that
each school has representatives at each session.

Session Choices

• OPTION 1A: Effective use of ICT in Science

Led by Mark Ferguson [SIS] 121

This continues expanding ideas of 1:1 connectivity and how teachers and
students can effectively use ICT in Science lessons. This will also give some
ideas of how independent learning can be encouraged. Teachers will be given
opportunities to try some of these strategies and time to develop resources.

A Laptop is required for this session.

• OPTION 1B: Using Multimedia Science in the Science

Classroom:
Led by Jonny Horner (IS) Room 142.

During this session I hope to showcase some of the uses of the Multimedia
Science software, a suite of interactive animations for use in Science, mainly
in IB. Then we can spend some time customizing some of the lessons provided
to better provide interactive learning opportunities and differentiation that suit
our curriculum.

• OPTION 1C : AFL new ideas for starters and plenaries.

Led by Greg Turner [SIS] and Mike Williams [IS] 132

Making assessment more student centered. Using self and peer evaluation so
that students understand how they can improve. Schools will present and
share ideas and resources of how AfL has been applied to Science in their
school. Time will be give to generate new resources and implement these
ideas into current and future practice.

OPTION 2A: Effective use of ICT in Science

Led by Rachel Ali (SIS) 121

This continues expanding ideas of 1:1 connectivity and how teachers and
students can effectively use ICT in Science lessons. This will also give some
ideas of how independent learning can be encouraged. Teachers will be given
opportunities to try some of these strategies and time to develop resources.

A Laptop is required for this session.

OPTION 2B: Further applications of using scientific

simulations and interactive software in the classroom.
Led by Jonny Horner (IS) Location room 142

This session provides an additional opportunity to look at some further

possibilities of incorporating simulations and interactive ICT
programmes into teaching Science. Types of programmes will include
crocodile chemistry and physics, Absorb Chemistry and Physics, AQA
chemistry and e chalk. Teachers will be given opportunities to try some of
these strategies and time to develop resources.

OPTION 2C: Problem based learning in the Science

classroom

Led by Jason Benton (SIS) Location 132

As the first cohort of PYP students pass through Year 7 there is an even
greater need to shift to a more enquiry based focus. This session looks
at strategies for developing independent enquiries.

IB/TOK Sessions
These sessions will be held in subject groups.

Led by - Su Cowland - Biology in 121

- Jason Benton - Chemistry in 141
- Tanith James - Physics in 132

The TOK sessions will be of 1 hour duration and lead by:

- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics

Following the TOK presentations the remainder of the session will focus
on an IB Teaching discussion – focus on the options, EE, Share Group 4
findings, Internal assessment
Use of datalogging in IB teaching hopefully we will be working with technicians
at this stage.
