TYPES OF PMSMS 1) Surface-mounted PMSMs (External)

Important Features: Follow the typical representative flux path. Recall: PM material has r absolute value 1, both Ld, Lq values are less, and are comparable. So, almost non-salient. Drawbacks: Cannot operate at very high speeds as magnets are mounted on the surface Effective air-gap is high, so effect of armature reaction AT insignificant. So, Constant torque control possible, flux weakening not popular.

2) Interior Permanent Magnet PMSMs (IPM m/cs)

Important Features: Follow the typical representative flux path. Recall: PM material has r absolute value 1. Note: Ld value less, Lq value more. So, Saliency torque obtained additionally. Can operate at very high speeds as rotor construction robust. Effective air-gap is low, so effect of armature reaction AT dominant. So, Constant torque control possible, flux weakening (constant power control) is also popular by suitably controlling the demagnetizing armature AT. Higher torque per ampere possible.
