QUALITATIVERESEARCHDESIGN Choosingamongresearchmethodsdependsonwhichtypesofriskthescholarismost comfortabletaking,amongotherthings.Quantitativeandqualitativemethodshave differentstrengths,andeveryresearchmethodeverinventedispoorasameanstoat leastonelegitimateobjective.Operatingunderthisassumption,thisseminaroffersto helpadvancedsocialsciencestudentsgetthegreatestpossiblevaluefromqualitative empiricalresearchdesigns,whetherornotthesearecombinedwithmathematicalor statisticaltechniques.Illustrativepublicationstendtocomeprimarilyfrompolitical scienceandpoliticaleconomyespeciallyattheinternationallevel,andtolesserdegrees fromeducation,history,andsociology. Theterm"qualitative"isusedbydiversescholarswhodisagreeonepistemological basics.Assumingsomepriorexposuretothesedebates,thisseminarworkswithinwhat couldbecalledbroadorpragmaticpositivism,themainstreamintheUSA.Thisinclusive positionwillbediscussedbrieflyattheoutset.Thisyearthisseminardoesnotattemptto teachhowtousemethodsthatregardthemselvesasalternativestothistradition.IR513 hasintroducedhistoricalandhumanisticmethodsanddiscussedprospectsfor synthesizingmethods.Appendix3listsadditionalreferencesfrominterpretivist traditions. Prerequisite:IR513oranotherbasiccourseinepistemologyandresearchdesign, includingsomeexposuretostatisticalmethods.Thiscourseismostappropriateafter completingothergraduatecourseswhereyouwillhavereadscholarshiponyour particularsubjectandbeguntoidentifyyourresearchtopics.
