HELPO is organization that established on 1992 and since on that implementing many effective programs with community basis and institutional level. New path to organic cultivation

HELPOstartednewprogramwithinthegrassrootlevelthatishomegardeningwith base of Biogas unit. At the beginning level started this in Totagamuwa under the USAIDSARIEnergyprogramweconstructedbiogasunitinTotagamuwaarea.Asthe second stage of that we are carrying organic cultivation. The program is totally communitybased.

The other fact is most of people do animal husbandry. There is a huge possibility to carryonthisprogram.Currentlypeoplestartedthecultivationbutweneedtopromote theorganiccultivation.HELPOgetsthesupportofPeoplemovementtocarryonand monitor this program. Under this program village people movement branch start the selling bio fertilizer. On the other hand this is one of income generating activity in ground level and has multi benefits. The program monitor by two stages one is CBO levelandsecondisvillagelevelbranch.Wehaveprovidedtheseedsforthepeoplewho wishtocultivateinlands.

Guidelines to organic cultivation

The organization is scheduled many programs and activities for environment conservation. HELPO conducted awareness program to community of the TotagamuwaaboutOrganiccultivationandtechniques.Thisprogramisthefoundation stonetostartpromoteorganiccultivationprograminthisarea.

Before launch this program, people should aware about proper process to organic cultivation. With the base of that we organized one awareness program. The message we needed to give people is start home gardening in their houses by using the bio fertilizerofthebiogas.Morethan150peopleparticipatedtothisprogramandweaware them about how to apply this bio fertilizer to plants and also basic things of organic cultivation.Wecouldawarecommunityabouthowtostartcultivationwithinasmall area and techniques for that. Within few weeks after HELPO expects to launch this organic cultivation program within Totagamuwa Areas. Even this was practical program for the grass root level people. Community got many things from the program. The program much help to carry on our home garden concept within communityleveltheywellawareaboutorganiccultivation. HELPO decided to launch new program with relationship of grass root level community. The program is making Activate Carbon by Coconut Shell. In Galle there are many institutionsthatcollectcoconutshellsinlargescaledaily.Thoseinstitutionsdonthave apropersolutiontodisposelargenumberofcoconutshells.

NowHELPOcollectsthoselargenumberofcoconutshellsandwestorethoseshellsin Paraliya area and that land we have specially developed for this purpose. Also organization collects the coconut shells in village level. Through this program people able to get money. That is another support for their lives. HELPO expects to collect 2000coconutshellsdailyandwearecrushingittosmallpieces.Organizationcouldfind sustainable solutions for many wastes of the city and we are trying to reach to Zero wasteconceptwitheconomicvaluesforwaste.

Waste Revolution of Galle Navy

Galle Navy camp cause to generate huge waste amount for the city daily. The camp located within very limited spaceanddonthaveaplacetodispose the waste. With financial support of UNDP / SGP / GEF Program and Pilisaru National Program of Central EnvironmentAuthority(CEA)HELPO implementedwasterevolutionprogram in Navy camp. Biogas unit was much success solution for them. Now they dont want to dispose waste and waste isaresourceforthem.

Total consumption of biogas is more than12hoursdaily.DailyNavyofficers record about biogas consumption and they able save much LP Gas cylinders byusingbiogas.Navycampappointed crew for maintain biogas unit and for feeding. Municipal Council able to reduce the wastemanagementcostforGalleNavy. Galle Navy Camp able to reduce the total waste in considerable amount. With base of this experience HELPO introducedthisprocesstomanycamps.
