Introduction
Nakhon Ratchasima province (also called Khorat) is located about 259 km NorthEast of Bangkok and well known as the gate to northeastern Thailand. It is the largest province in the country and has a long history and interesting cultures. Geographically, the province is situated on the western edge of the Khorat Plateau which makes the distinct area of mainly a Mesozoic red bed-high terrane. Besides, there are Permian limestones exposed in the western rim of the Khorat Plateau which underlay the red beds, and there are also Cenozoic semi-consolidated and unconsolidated sediments overlying on the red beds. Therefore, it is clear that Nakhon Ratchasima province contains rocks of three Eras, from Paleozoic to Cenozoic. That also explains the frequent discoveries of faunal and floral fossils in this area; invertebrates from the limestones, dinosaurs and reptiles from the red beds, mammals from sandpits, and semi-precious petrified woods from gravel beds. Perhaps, Nakhon Ratchasima is the city of paleontology and paleoworld.
The NRIP, located in Nakhon Rachasima, is a research institute which mainly focuses on research in paleontology and geology. In addition to providing service to teachers and students, visitors can also visit our museum which displays various items ranging from petrified woods, dinosaurs, and ancient elephants remains. With our strategic location and well-qualified personels on site, our institute is moving forward to becoming the center of national paleontology research which is getting well-known internationally.
According to past research findings, Nakhon Ratchasima stands out as a site with eight out of 41 genus of ancient elephants in Cenozoic Era were found. This is one of the richest sites of ancient elephant fossils in the world. Nowadays, elephant, especially white elephant, is regarded as a sacred animal in Thailand, as it symbolizes royal power of the King. Therefore, to celebrate his Majesty the Kings 84th birthday anniversary in 2011, which falls on 5 December 2011. NRIP is holding this international conference in honor of His Royal Lordship. As part of this international conference, NRIP will showcase Fossil Exhibition so that regular visitors to the museum will gain knowledge on paleontology from various activities and presentations which does not only focus on academic. Visitors are guaranteed of lots of fun while learning about the exhibition with other participants, nearly 10,000.
